I agree, as an Asian person, lack of representation affected me. It made me wish I was white. But when I saw Knives when I was 13 I thought she was so cool! I even wore a checkered scarf like hers because I wanted to be kickass like her.

scott is one of the only protagonists in a movie that I’ve seen where you’re not supposed to like him. idk it’s kinda refreshing that he’s not the true hero stereotype. also, the casting, editing, and effects could not have matched the comic book better imho

Scott Pilgrim is the story of a selfish idiot that ends up realizing all the pain he caused and, while he recognizes he can't undo what he did to his friends/lovers, he decides to change and become a better person. I love every character in this movie and honestly Scott and Ramona are both selfish but I think that’s the point. He’s selfish for cheating on Knives and treating her as some kind of trophy while Romona is selfish because of the situation with her ex’s and how she just ran away from her problems

Fun fact about the package throwing away scene: It wasn't CGI! The director actually had him throw it into the trash can. If you track down the outtakes, it shows you how many times it took him to get it in there.

the whole point of the graphic novel is ramona and scott realizing how they’re both shitty people. ramona cheated on her exes and gets angry about scott, she makes out with roxy because she thinks scott is cheating on her with lisa (scott just ended up crying about how much he loved ramona and passing out on her couch). scott realizes he’s a douche that makes himself feel better about himself by forgetting everything and coming to terms with his fake memories/amnesia. the part where ramona straight up vanishes for months and scott goes back into a depression makes this more powerful especially when ramona talks about how she just vanished and went to her dad’s house to watch tv and do nothing instead of facing her own issues. ramona runs from all her problems while scott represses them and it’s not going to always be smooth sailing but they’re going to try their hardest to make things better. that’s what scott pilgrim should be about.

This movie predicted e-girl fashion and you can't convince me otherwise

Having his ex-girlfriend's band be AWESOME is such a uniquely Edgar Wright choice. Most directors would have her as a bubble gum pop star just there to loathe. Her band is easily the best band in the movie and seem to have earned their success. The fact that she's a terrible person has nothing to do with her being incredible as an artist.

In the comics Scott is supposed to be a shitty person. Also Ramona Flowers was a pretty shitty person too. They were meant for each other. You really aren't supposed to think they are good people. It kind of gets lost in the movie.

People forget you can like a movie and be critical about it.

most people who watch this movie seem to relate to either scott or ramona, but honestly i see myself in knives. especially when i was younger and dating an older boy. i'm a lesbian but i was experiencing compulsive heterosexuality at the time and i found myself obsessed with my boyfriend, not because i loved him but because i loved the world surrounding him similar to how knives was in awe of the band and all the "cool" things scott was associated with. when we broke up i felt obsessive over what i lost because i felt i couldn't be the "cool" girl i wanted to be without him. i see all that in knives because she acts more like a wide-eyed child who is visiting disneyland for the first time than an actual love interest. in conclusion knives is a lesbian thank you for coming to my ted talk.

The Scott Pilgrim comics give the female characters actual arcs. Knives moves on from Scott and rejects him when he tries to get back together with her. Ramona has a personality and realizes her past mistakes. Kim also rejects Scott and calls him out on using the women in his life. My heros 🤩

I mean, this whole movie, video game, and manga was created by Bryan Lee O’Malley. He is Korean and white and he went on to apologize for making the franchise “so white”. Also, most people know that Scott is a douchebag. There was a ending that they were going to go with and it was going to show Scott in his apartment watching the news where it talks about a Canadian man murdering 7 people. Then you would hear sirens in the back and it would cut there. I wish they did that cause that makes it more interesting and dark at the same time. This movie was the one of the defining movies from my childhood. I still have the soundtrack on my Spotify (specifically the opening credit song, metric singing black sheep from clash of the demonhead, and threshold from the amp v amp scene). I love this movie so much.

what you said abt poc women questioning their attractiveness really resonated with me. I'm south asian, pakistani to be exact, and it scares me how much time i spent growing up thinking i was ugly because i wasn't white, and it didn't help that there was no girl on TV that looked like me. and even if there were south asian characters, they were negatively racially-stereotyped as the "nerd" or "ugly" character. there still is a serious lack of representation and it's so frustrating.

Adding on to what trin said about knives being seen as "inferior" to Ramona (bc ramona is white, and knives is asian), I really do see how that could fuck up the mindset of a young asian american teen and I honestly never really thought about it when watching this movie. Being asian its inevitable that i do sometimes think about how some people view me based on what race I am. But at the same time the movie doesnt shy away from telling the audience that scott was a shitty person and that knives deserved better than him. Which is why at the end I loved when knives straight up told him, "I'm too cool for you" LIKE YES YOU GO GIRL 👏👏

Starting to feel like being the “main character” is not the goal bc the protagonists are always the WORST

You can relate to a character without being _like_ the character, even without liking them. Like I can relate to Scott in his socially awkward moments while still being like "dude, wtf?" when he does something shitty. I'd imagine something similar can apply to Ramona for people who can relate to her.

It’s really weird because the comic Scott is worst yet his character develops more then the movie character and is way more likeable in the end.

It’s kind of funny to me that Mae Whitman played Katara in Avatar: The Last Airbender and she currently plays our favorite little miss perfect lesbian Amity Blight on The Owl House.

This is litteraly the best comic adaptation even if you dont think its the best comic book movie it has to be the one that was addapted to screen the best (also fun fact Michael Cera was actually hired because they wanted someone who could act like an arshole and still come off as likeable to the audience)

Rewatching this movie as an adult, it really does drag on.I think it’s partly cause I don’t want to root for Scott. He’s an asshole. The exes are fun and all of the supporting cast is fun.

Not even 5 minutes into the movie and already this reactor is insufferable. It's almost impressive how someone can completely ignore the point, as well as every aspect of a movie while acting like they got it figured out, and blame the movie for choices they didn't even bother to consider as to WHY it was included. Seems to be a running trend with these guys.

Knives is anything but sidelined or "less than". She has a full character arc, a fight scene, the audience's sympathy even when she makes mistakes, the only non-Scott scene in the film, and she's crucial to the ending. She even gets the last word about her relationship, with the delightful line "I'm too cool for you anyway". It would have been easy to treat Knives like a standard romantic rival who disappears after 30 minutes and gets crushed at the end, but they made her a 3-dimensional main character instead.

I’m a massive Scott Pilgrim fan, read the comics, played the game and watched the movie a countless amount of times, Ramona and Scott are both just as bad, it doesn’t show a lot in the movie but Ramona does do some things in the comics too that are hurtful too. Towards the end though Scott and Ramona redeem themselves and want to live a better life and just be better. Loved the video ❤️

this is a story about shallow hipsters in canada youre not supposed to like scott, even ramona the story is about him realizing hes an asshole and if you read the comics the last book is basically a montage of him realizing all the bad shit he had done and owning up to it
