The spoke wheels on your new CVO should be inspected on a regular basis. In this episode I show how easy it is to inspect your rims and spokes. The only thing you need is a motorcycle lift and a screwdriver.

It’s always amazes me that most people don’t know they have to check spoked wheels. Great for getting the info out there Cue. My Pan Am had spoked wheels, not my first bike with them.

I had NO IDEA! In fact, I was told that these rims do not require maintenance. As with many other features about this bike....alot of "experts" have no idea what they are talking about. i could do a video about all of the mis-information that I received.

I rode for about 3,000 miles on that rim! I feel fortunate that nothing bad happened.

They are probably ok....but this is definitely something to check when you are inspecting your tires.

This is my first set of spoke wheel rims. I had no idea that they require maintenance, in fact I was told that they do not require maintenance. The owners manual says otherwise! Unfortunately, the owners manual does not tell you how to inspect the rims. Turns out, it is pretty easy to do. I am concerned that my local dealer may not have someone who is experienced in tightening the spokes (as required in the service manual). I suspect that it is easier than traditional spoke rims, but it is a skill that I do not currently have.

There’s a reason we went away from spoke rims since the 90’s Because they are weaker, too much maintenance and cause lots of balancing problems

After reviewing the damage up close, I feel fortunate that I didn't have any issues. Next up for me is to learn more about spoke wheels!

Great Video Chris. Spoke rims are garbage and there’s a reason that riders started going away from them since the 90’s because they are not durable and a hassle for maintenance My 24 CVO SG had a bad front end vibration, my dealer couldn’t figure it out. They put the steering ballast in and it didn’t fix it After 5000 miles I realized there were no wheel weights on my rims from factory Took it to the dealer and pointed this out. It ended up that 1.5 oz had to put on for balance

I remember many years ago rebuilding wheels with spokes. That rim needs work or replacement. With the old system you not only tension but also check wheel roundness it was an art a friend of mine could do it with eyes closed and frequently did.

Q I didn’t know they even sold bikes with spoke wheels any more. Fore that specific reason, because if you don’t know how to tighten them you could really worpe your rim

I would take a board and hammer and hammer out that bend. Then adjust the spokes once wheel is fixed

I had that thought, but the rim is bent in a few places. I think you could attempt to straighten it, but it would take a little work

@@Jim_Berry funny thing is that I don't remember hitting a pothole that would have caused that much damage. The wheel is in much worse shape than I had initially thought. Makes me wonder if these wheels aren't easily susceptible to damage.

@@RidingandWrenching I would be wondering the same thing. This is why I don't ever want spoked wheels on my touring HD. This could have been a real safety issue. Maybe it's time to think about a set of cast aluminum wheels?

That's a bummer about your wheel, but sounds like your warranty is going to cover it 👍 Yeah, spoked wheels are a lot more work. I have one front spoked wheel on my softail. Don't think I would ever get spoked wheels again. Surprise your manual talks about tapping the spokes to check torque. The actual proper way is to check them all with a spoke torque wrench. If you have to make lots of adjustments then you really should true the wheel also. That is a lot easier to do with the wheel off the bike. Peace...BCR

That wheel is 10-7; stick a fork in it. If you have road hazard coverage, turn in a claim. FWIW, these laced wheels require a substantially different approach when truing than conventional steel laced wheels. For anyone out in the ether thinking a out grabbing a wrench and going for it, you may regret that decision if you don’t have experience that is specific to wheels like these…just a heads up, be careful.

That rim is done! I feel very fortunate that I was able to complete my ride. I didn't realize (until I got home and inspected the wheel closely) how bad it was damaged. It did not lose air pressure.....I was lucky!

@@timnevitt2993 I have 16,000 miles on mine. I actually rode for 2,000 miles on this bent rim (I didn't realize how bad it was at the time). My plan is to inspect the spokes everytime I inspect my tires.

I like spoke wheels on some of the other bikes like soft tails, etc. but don't think they look good on the baggers. I also don't care to have to check spokes....
