The action of the movie takes place in the distant future. People have long ago left Earth and live on the planet XT-59. A group of prisoners is sentenced to life exile. To survive in harsh conditions, they have to overcome a difficult and dangerous path through the Sargasso Swamp.

Well I dont know about the movie, havent seen it and wont, but your conclusion at the end is slightly faulty. dont take it as offence but several examples in history proof different. take germany between 1933 to 1945 for example. Complete 180° change driven from outside forces.
