You'd expect the Carwow team would prepare on the cars, and at least someone would let this know and tell to Mat. As much as I love this channel, cant help but say these minor mistakes makes this channel less of a professional "brand" to my eyes
@@iceman10129 well, there’s a whole reason alone why car manufactures are able to get low numbers donut media did a whole video on it. About how they position the tires and when do they start the actual timer
Riiiiight! Most of the launches could've been done with a little slippage at the start and then just hold 1st gear until the end. Times would've been way better
I'm 100% sure @carwow Mat Watson already knows this but... Willow Spring and the surrounding areas where he's testing these cars is Officially called the "High Desert". The elevation of this area is around 3000-4000ft. You can't compare these tests to those done at Sea Level... NA cars lose power at altitude.
@@FilipKik iirc every 1000ft of air density is 10% power loss in a naturally aspirated, with a few exceptions. When you get high enough, the parasitic losses for running all the vehicle accessories becomes the majority of the power the engine produces, its pretty funny.
@@morganangel340 Nah. You're obviously not a car enthusiast. Real car people are not affected by "midlife crises" impulse buys. Unless mine started at 16 years old and has lasted over 40 years.
I love how matt is trying his hardest to talk smack on the viper because he can't successfully launch them. It makes him look worse for it, but at least he's in character trying his best and idk, something about that is kinda adorable to watch.
@@sjukbasketball8498 Of course he should have but let's be honest, would if made a huge Difference like so many Comments here claim?People seem outraged and even claim he wants American Cars to look bad. I just doubt compared to the Gen 4 and 5 going to 60 in 1st Gear it would have made a noticable Difference. Even the 4th and 5th Gen surprisingly didn't shave off much doing so. So i wonder why the Gen 1, 2 and 3 would have made a Big Difference
@@chartreux1532 we ain’t talking a big difference brother, maybe 0.1-0.2 but I think it’s more to do with the fact the gearbox is manufactured for that and he wasn’t doing it
@@sjukbasketball8498 I definitely agree with that. I was just surprised how angry some People in the Comments (see Top Comment with the most Upvotes) and all the Responses to it claiming not only it would have made a big Difference but also that Matt is trying to make American Cars look bad/doing this on Purpose which is ridiculous. Happens in every Comment Section of Matt reviewing American Cars
It looked like they ALL mighta done 60 in first? To be honest they are all VERY similar, all have terrible power considering the huge capacity. Plus they all seem very truck like.
Gen 2 has just the right amount of retro style & class to it. Very clean and unique looking car. Thanks to the melted cheese era (1990’s) where most sport car looked ever so unique.
I think the 90´s are called melted cheese era because car designs got more round, for example the BMW E30 from the 80´s was way more boxy than it´s successor the E36, mainly due to new possibilities in manufactoring. And i agree, the Gen 2 is my favorite by far as well! 👍
the gen 2 and the gen 5 are just by far the best cars in the viper line, favourite car line and im genuinely gutted that it got discontinued, it would have been great to see where they wouldve taken it, rip the viper, you rollercoster of a production line
I fell in love with Vipers because of Grand Turismo on PS1. Became a bit obsessed to be honest. Realized my dream of owning one a few years ago, got myself a red 2000 ACR. Such a fun car.
@@Visionary- bah. Looks too alien with those vertical headlights and its blacked out grill. Like an R35 GTR. I mean to each his own. It just looks nothing like the car I fell in love with back in 02. The fascia is totally different and the taillights look like something made for current year cars, in a bad way, that is.
I've always been a Corvette guy, but what I've ALWAYS loved about the Viper is that Dodge NEVER had a p***y automatic transmission offered. Big V10, rear-drive, 3 pedals, and no bullshit!
Some Viper models actually launch better in 2nd gear on unprepped surfaces due to wheel spin and as others mentioned, 1st gear is usually pretty tall on Vipers with some being able to hit 60 in first, most of the gear changes seemed to happen just before 60MPH.
You are correct the 0 to 60 mph should have been done in first gear only because tops being in first gear at redline is 62 mph. That’s why all these times were slow.
my 22 CT5-V Blackwing is a 10 speed and i've gotten a 3.29s 0-60 by going in 2nd in manual mode then switching back to auto mode super quickly. this was at Bradenton drag strip with prep free drag days. just a good clean asphalt surface
Gotta agree that the 2nd gen has the most iconic look. I used to hate the 2nd gen but the looks grew on me. I also like the looks of the 5th gen because it feels like a spiritual successor to the 2nd gen. For performance I think the 4th and 5th gen are my favorites. Both of them are basically track cars disguised as road cars. My looks tier list would be: Gen 2 > Gen 5 > Gen 4 > Gen 3 > Gen 1
Seat lowering kits are available and popular - though it is pretty crazy that an American car made for Americans in America can't really comfortably fit anyone over 5'5 or 70kg lol.
Yeah. My normal shifts in daily driving are probably 600-900ms. Because I ain’t racing and it’s nicer to the clutch. Same for taking off, i tend to use the minimum amount of slip possible, specially when I’m by my lonesome and don’t have anyone else to bother with the lazy shifts. I’ve only used launch control and sidestepped the clutch like 10 times of the 60,000 miles I have in the car. I expect to get near 100k miles out of the clutch. Even when I’m at Road America or Autobahn, I completely release the clutch between shifts since it’s only HDPE and not truly racing. It’s really only at the drag strip that I’ll sidestep and flat foot shift the car. I’ve done a 13.1 @ 106 stock. So close to 12s.
The only role Lamborghini had on the V10 motor was to show the engineers how to "cast" the engine. The block itself is engineered much like an old school small block Chrysler/Dodge v8 engine. All the engineering of the engine is ALL Chrysler/Dodge, only the casting related water jackets were Lamborghini's doing. These V10s are the most robust V10s ever produced. A 2v per cylinder over-head-valve design is simplistic, easy to maintain, and will produce gobs more torque than any flat-plane crank motor design. I think it is also good to note that these engines are one of the most reliable stroked out motors available. I love how this video allows us to witness the Viper slowly refining throughout the years.
He did redline it in the 4th Gen and even the Racecar Driver Owner did it and the Time is still not any better, so i doubt that it would lose a whole Second
@@maverickphantom005 Not entirely true. The actual reason was the safety concerns held by the Federal Regulations that these iconic cars couldn't adhere to.
The jump between gen 1 and gen 2 is amazing! I love the look of the 2nd gen!! The 5th gen is of course best when it comes to performance, truly an American supercar!
Every Viper was a supercar. The first gen broke production car top speed records when it came out. The second gen dominated lemans so badly it was outlawed. The 4th gen ACR held the Nürburgring production car lap record in 2011. But sure, only the 5th gen was a supercar LOL.
I agree, 2nd generation viper looks very nice and most iconic of the 5. And also a Grand Turismo gamer, the 2nd gen viper is my favorite pick. Though, the most menacing out of the 5 gens, the 5th gen acr in black! 😎👍
This was the best clip I've seen in years on this channel. Do it with other brands and models. The list is endless. If Matt had the idea of 1st gear with the 2nd and 3rd gen on launches which he thought of on 4th gen he might have been surprised at the outcome.
Would love to see Matt drive every gen corvette like this. Might be difficult to get ahold of some of them, but 5 of the gens are pretty plentiful in decent condition.
That would be wild.... So many different generations to go through. My least favorite somehow is the C8 Corvette, maybe its the mid engine or the new look in general, all i know is its not a Corvette anymore.
Had a gen1 Viper more than 20 years ago when I was in my mid 20s. Drove it 20k miles in 3 years and totally loved it. It was an absolute blast to drive, took it on racetracks several times, drove it in rain etc. without any crashes. Sold it due to family plans, new owner's brother crashed it a few days later (I adviced him to NEVER let anyone else behind the steering wheel). If you are not respectful to that monster it will kick you of the road within a blink of an eye.
That is truly tragic. Unfortunately, many "car guys" were driving imports with small engines back then. Unless someone grew up with big block V8s there was a high likely hood that they'd mash the pedal to the floor and crash. Not the car's fault in the slightest. Last time I checked, people don't blame dirt bikes when the rider wrecks. They blame the rider lol.
So many commentors are saying the same thing haha. Glad to know there's actually quite a few people that know this about the Gen 3. Speaking of, the Gen 3 also had ABS actually (from the factory). Maybe the owner disabled it, but Gen 3s do actually have ABS.
I was thinking the first gear of nearly all Vipers will go up to more than 60 mph?! So why shifting up when you measure 0-60 mph? Matt just recognizes it from Mark IV on ;)
Gen-1; my grandma gave me a poster of the prototype they were touring the plants with in Detroit. She said workers came out to watch it do 0-60 or 0-100. I love that my GRANDMOTHER thought this car was cool and got me an official picture. The headlights had square-like shapes on the inside of the assembly before the went with those 2 round ones.
I was surprised to see each owner's reaction, when asked to let the keys go for some hard launches. There seemed to be, not only no inhibition, but encouragement. If you did such a comparison with any other make, I would be curious if you would get the same reaction.
I own a 09 P71 n absolutely hate letting anyone drive it that isn't on the insurance policy n even then still refuse unless absolutely necessary..lol i guess these guys have money vs me who only has one car n in huge debt modifying it to go "fast"..lol
When you look up the racing history of the Viper in racing you just simply go speechless. The amount of records and times it did during it’s time that still hold up today is mind blowing. It shouldn’t have keep up with the European powerhouses but not only it did but won several times. Nothing about this car makes any sense, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It feels like Dodge could have gone even further but ended it too soon
I think Dodge was trolling other manufacturers with nurburgring times too. They set a record with the ACR, then some other manufacturer would beat it and Dodge would dust off the ACR again and one up it. They did this several times - beating "better" supercars. Was hilarious.
Gotta agree - the 2nd gen was the best looking Viper they ever made. In this video I think it sounded the best too, but it's hard to know what sort of aftermarket exhausts each of these might have so not really a fair comparison.
Gen 2 and Gen 5 are the best of them. When gen 2 and the bubble roof came out and the tail it was just so damn sexy with a side of evil. Gen 5 kept it all that and cranked it up to 12 plus the ACR wrecking track records!
I drove one of these built as a S-GT class trans am car for one lap on Laguna Seca on a track day. I had my old mk2 VW GTI cup car in the paddock and the viper driver mentioned he'd had a base model mk1 rabbit as a kid... and asked if he Could take my car around a couple times. I jokingly said sure, if you'll let me have a go in yours (i was TOTALLY joking... i mean two of his TIRES cost more than my car when i bought it, lol.) And then tossed him my key. He went out and put in 4 laps, and came back grinning like a kid. "Its like a gocart! I gotta get one of these! You just stay in it and just railsthat around. I bearly had to lift, let alone brake" And then he says. Mine don't have a key. Go get buckled in and i'll run you through the start sequence. So, I hopped in he started it up and i took her round. It was the most raw, brutal exerience I've ever experienced in a car. That thing SCARED me. and I barely got into it. I mean this was a prepped GT car - it was worth more than my frigging house - so i wasn't gonna hot dog it.. but i couldnt have even if i had the balls and the bankroll to do so. I can drive. I mean im nothing special but i can drive. And that thing was way beyond my skill level to drive at anything close to its full potential. The thing WANTS to kill you. I've never driven a street legal viper, but if its even half of what that GT car was... WTF?!
So cool, I have never driven Viper, 1st Gen no driver aids. Last year of production 2017 race car driver had RU-vid video took 2017 viper GTR around Laguna Seca race track. Professional race car driver was SO IMPRESSED WITH VIPER FROM GEN 1 TO 2017 VIPER, HANDING, CAR TEND TO SNAP AROUND ON ACCELERATION ON TURNS, THAT WAS BIG DEAL AND WET PAVEMENT DRIVING.
It’s trajectory and momentum is in a state of acceleration. Shifting or not shifting at 0.3mph short of 60 isn’t going to change your time significantly.
@@ibsn87 yeah that's a good point. I also thought there could've been some sort of latency for the GPS meter, but who knows. But I still think he could've pushed it a bit more.
@@ibsn87this is completely wrong. If you have the revs to hit 60 it’s way better to leave it in gear for this test. Watch the speed when he shifts. The car slows down. Doesn’t help that Matt is shifting these really slow😂
The 1st gen was awesome when it first came out because there was nothing else like it and it looked great! However, after the introduction of the 2nd gen GTS coupe in 1996, I no longer liked the look of the 1st gen too much. At the end of the day, the 5th gen is definitely my favorite. It looks the best, it's way more refined, and there's more room in the interior.
@@ToeCutter69 I'd like to see you get into different cars all day long and launch them in front of their owners without smoking the tires/clutch or stalling it. If he couldn't drive then I doubt manufacturers would hand him keys to their million dollar cars.
You are simply constantly pushing limits, amazing! You are full filling my every car dream. Love it, please keep it up till the end of time. Never retire Matt, please!
Gotta love the way he compares the sound of the 1st gen Viper V10 to cars that weren't even thought of at the time. I'm 6 mins in and that's as much as I can tolerate. Oh yeah, it is a breathed on truck engine ya muppet, course it sounds reminiscent of one. 😂😂
Gen 2 is my favourite. Been to the USA once, and i saw one drive down a car lined street; all of the alarms went off due the virbation of the V10. Incredible.
I was 9 years old when I first saw the original Dodge Viper RT/10 in red in a showroom at Rothrock Dodge in Allentown, PA and I was absolutely hooked. Ever since then I have been dying to own one at some point. I want the OG Viper. Granted, they've gotten better with time, but I remember reading Road and Track magazine, Car & Driver, and many others which displayed the concepts of the Viper RT/10. I remember playing the original Need for Speed with interior views of the OG Viper and how much I have always loved it. That 8.0L V-10 is just a beast. I love it almost as much as I love the 1988 Lamborghini Countach LP5000S Quattrovalvole or even the original Diablo. I'm old school and damn proud of it.
God I love the sounds that Vipers make. Also, that Borg-Warner T56 in the Gen 1 and Gen 2 is such a wonderful thing. I have one (though, of course, not "Viper spec") in a '96 Camaro Z28 and it's just so purposeful.
Great video The Gen 1 is my absolute favorite My dream car when I was a kid - was watching the Viper TV show with the red Gen 1 that could transform into the bulletproof silver defender My dreams came true when I got myself a red Gen 1 in 2017 Absolutely love it
These cars are literally known for having a pretty long 1st gear the fact he actually shifted on one run at 58.7 in the gen 3 had me mad af and dying at the same time 😭🤣
The Gen II is probably the best Viper, but I personally love the truck feel, that everyone else hates, from the Gen I, it just feels primal, and raw, a genuine FML machine! Btw, by time you shift into 2nd in *any* Viper, YOU ARE AT 60!
@@wulver810 that’s weird, maybe was there an automatic version of the viper for the quick shifts or was there a pro power shifting or something like that, im genuinely confused
I'm wondering if all of these cars are able to hit 60 mph i first gear? 🤔 In that case the 0-60 could be reduced a bit by running it all the way to the rev limiter.
Yes, they all can do 60Mph in 1st gear. Matt should have done a little research first. At least he finally figured it out. But should have retested all vipers again, doing 60Mph in 1st gear.
16:10 to 17:30 - This is speech is why Matt is a top tier car journalist. The flow and consistent delivery of perfect descriptors here were delightful to hear.
The first one was that, I loved how it looked then. It’s iconic! But I now do love the curves of the second gen. And then again, the fifth is a worthy competition.
Love Vipers! I worked at the Dodge dealer when the first one came out and it was just amazing! Dodge really did a great job over the years updating it but still keep it hardcore! Great video!
Great review - thank you! Always fancied a viper - I was expecting a bit more from them in terms of performance, perhaps a 1/4 mile test would have shown their true bite (lol)
Gen 4 was my fav all round and this was a lot of fun! I'm sure great for open US roads, but wouldn't work so well on my local country roads here in the UK - but never made for that :P
Great video, fun idea. Second gen is my favorite too. Saw them at the drag strip back in the day running low 11s to high 10s. Second Gens sound f'ing fantastic with a Corsa exhaust too.😉
What a great video! I love the Viper and seeing the different generations next to each other. It was so funny see them refer to the Viper from Gran Turismo, that was memorable to me too. It's cool to see my generation buying these cars now
Enjoyed watching this layout of all generation Vipers..! Such an American 🇺🇸 icon for a quarter century! Finally bought a 3rd Gen recently and LOVE every moment of being behind the wheel..! Great video!!
