I can think of a few reasons why Rosemary would hide the picture of her mother behind a cheesecake. -Rosemary thinks guardians have to be tough, so she hides missing her mother. But Rosemary never shuts up about her mother. -Rosemary wants to earn her own fame instead of coasting on her mother's fame. But Rosemary never shuts up about her mother. -Rosemary is just weird. But it is really hard to tell when Rosemary is serious and when she is joking. That is what is actually frustrating about High Guardian Spice; the missed opportunities. Another example, Thyme can use Old Magic. Not on the same level as Sage, but you would think that would at least give them something to talk about.

I thought of my own High Guardian Spice with some differences such as: 1. Rosemary`s Mother being dead instead of being with the bad guys 2. Astor being removed from the series since he was a nothing Character 3. Old Magic is Infinite but requires time to use and New Magic is easier to use but is limited 4. A New Villain that isn't with Olive and Mandrake

One counter about Mandrake, maybe when he showed up. He will play around the fact that he personally knows about Rosemary, why? Cause he's secretly Rosemary half brother, both Mandrake and Rosemary actually brother have similar light pink hair. It would have been interesting that Mandrake was another child of Lavender, that way it can add a new layer about Lavender being the side of evil.
It just bothers me that it's obvious they didn't put nearly enough thought into the other girls as much as Rosemary and Sage. Parsley liking blacksmithing can be fixed easily. She has been raised in a forge. She loves smithing. Make her passionate, but there is familial conflict because she looks ahead on the business end while her family is more traditional. With new magic on the rise, people are buying fewer normal appliances and weapons. Parsley sees that her family's forge is starting to struggle because of this. She goes to the guardian school so she can make ENCHANTED weapons. DONE!
This show doesn't JUST queer-bait. It generally romance-baits. There is NO romance in this show. There are three married couples that I remember the lesbian witches and parsley and thyme's parents. I don't count Rosemary's parents because they are essentially separated. None of these really show any romance on screen. The closest thing we do have to romance is, I'd say, Snapdragon and Amyrilis. Rosemary fawns over Aster for an episode but that is specifically anti-romance. Sage never likes anyone except Rosemary but rejects any idea of romance between the two. S and A at least have fun chemistry and a pseudo-date.
To be fair, I imagine if this would have continued there would have been more explicit romance in later seasons. You know how some people enjoy slowburn...sometimes a bit too much if you ask me...
26:35 I think having a demonic character as ethics teacher could be really interesting. My current project has a devil salesman because you know... He makes deals, it's not far off from selling goods. A demonic teacher could have a black and white view on ethics, and a strong principled stance. What could be interesting is the character essentially turning her back on her heritage and leaning hard in the other direction, to a fault. A hardline "Stay on the straight and narrow or you're going to hell" type.
What if she escaped from hell and the only way to keep from being dragged back is to be ... perfectly good, to actually deserve to not be in hell (following the Christian idea that everyone is a sinner and thus deserves to be in hell). So she has this unwavering black and white view to a practical fault, like for example, if you try to help someone half-heartedly and they end up coming to harm because you didn't put your full effort into helping then you are responsible for that harm.
The thing about the Transition Magic(™) that gets me-okay, you have perfect body transmogrification potions, it has no side effects, isn't any more permanent than dyeing your hair, and is apparently both easily obtainable and completely non-controversial. Fine! Cool. Awesome. Except that you now just turned this into a science fiction setting. And I mean that as a _compliment._ It's now a speculative setting that, logically, would demonstrate the changes, either very personal or possibly very radical and fundamental, that could in society and the experienceable world through the introduction of a hitherto unknown form of technology, scientific knowledge, or natural phenomenon. This is like the cybernetic augmentation available in a cyberpunk work, where people can "different bodies according to their needs just as men wear suits of clothes and take a bicycle in a hurry or an umbrella in the wet." Or, more succinctly, and speaking to the common inner infuriation of the internet critic, it's like those episode of Star Trek when they introduce some new technology that, by all rights, would radically reduce or change the problems the cast encounters in later episodes. It's when creators have stolen high-octane atomic fire from the gods-and they're using it once, to light a tea candle.
The "high-octane atomic fire from the gods" metaphor gets better when you take notes from the series. Apparently, that transition magic requires routine reinforcements, as if it's some higher form of magic that'd require it. Meanwhile, if memory serves, *immortality* is just something in a grade-schooler's book, implying it's something any dullard could pin down. These things are just, THERE, as if they wouldn't be giant deals.
Let's be real too, if this sort of magic or technology happened EVERYBODY would make themselves look beautiful. Men and women, everyone. Young and beautiful, they would all make themselves look like 25 year old super models. And hey... That would be a great excuse to have a show where everyone is just super good looking so now there's a real sex appeal for the audience. But... What will the consequences be to this world? What would the psychological effects be on these people? The ideal has been reached so there's nothing to strife for anymore, some women will probably still compete and find flaws in each other, that the person in question will then fix. Will she then loose her own identity because she doesn't know what her real self is anymore? A sixty year old woman may actually think she's 25, then suddenly keel over and die because she's old and no one gets why.... maybe I should write this story. Hmmm.
The only reason Transition Magic (that name does *not* sound like it belongs in a Fantasy setting, it's too on-the-nose to its modern medical counterpart) takes a montly potion is because it's a 1-to-1 with undergoing a medical transistion in our world. There's using Allegory in a Fantasy setting (something Tolkein infamously hated), then there's just putting something from our world in your Fantasy setting and making it possible through a magic potion.
That actually reminds me of a rather weird manga where a boarding school on some island gets transported to hell by the principal randomly deciding to draw a massive magic circle in the courtyard, after which demons form contracts with every single student where almost every single male student wishes for a handsome face and every single girl wishes for bigger breasts, the only exceptions being a handful of already good looking boys or busty girls. One of the guys ends up with super long legs like a stiltwalker. I can'trememberthe title but it was a real trip@@MoonPhantom

Of course they used magic to make themselves look beautiful. Yennefers big backstory even is she used to be ugly but then when she became proficient enough in magic she turned herself into the most beautiful woman in the world, even among witches. And then the Netflix show... They... Were more politically correct. Look the women they got for Netflix's witcher weren't ugly persay but... Playing women with magic who intentionally use their magic to make themselves look like 21 year old supermodels... Yeah... They aren't quite there... And these show writers pretending women wouldn't do that if we had magic I am just... look I'm a woman, of course I would do that if I had magic. Let's just be honest about this okay?
You know, the first time that I saw a clip of this show, I was under the impression that it was done by college amateurs or something. Like, it gave me the vibe of someone’s first animation project, so I was like, “oh cool, the kids who made this are super talented and ambitious, I can’t wait to see more of their stuff in the future!” Only for me to crash back down to earth and realize that this is supposed to be a professional show done by professionals of the industry… I liked it better when I was delusional and thinking young adults made it.
15:25 these kinds of problems can actually be made into huge boons for your story. Have someone complain about the size of the doorways, and have Parsley's family get up in arms about it. Have it be dwarven custom. Have the father stubbornly want his business to be fit for a dwarf, annoying his wife. Have it be that the father was exiled, and the house being this way reminds him of better times. Do something. You can do something with this. It's the small things that bring life to your characters and world.

Honestly you could even make a point to show that people are willing to put up with a smaller door because "superior dwarven craftsmanship" or whatever. Like yeah, we _could_ go to that other place with the human-sized door, but I'll huddle down for a second if it means getting my weapons maintained by true artisans of metalwork
1:10:01 I've listened to the '4/5 episode' video at least half a dozen times (I developed a habit of watching each episode again prior to watching the latest one. 1, then 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2-3-4/5, etc.). Only NOW did I catch this. "Her parents want *Sage* (the dwarf) to stop learning to be a blacksmith so she can come home, and work at home, as a blacksmith." Is it because the character is overwhelmingly bland, or because his brain melted up to that point? HGS is very likely a legitimate "orb" of defusion, lol.
If only they gave her any character they could’ve done something Why does she want to be a guardian? Why is she in the warrior track specifically? What even are all the available tracks to be a guardian? If they wrote something original they could’ve had blacksmiths certified to work with guardians and her parents wouldn’t want her to because it could cause her to be targeted Or they could write it as her choosing the warrior track just to get into blacksmithing class to learn from someone other than her parents It’s like all the episodes are a first draft because they don’t consider writing anything about their main characters other than what the relationship with their parents are like

I ain't an author nor writer by any means, but I'd drop a shiny shekel (if I HAD one) to write my own version of HGS, shitting all over the original the whole way through and see which turns out worse. Call it MGH, for Mid Guardian Herb. Not even low, just mid. Then again, never actually watched HGS, so I might not be the most inclined to thrash it on a line-by-line basis, y'know?

The Baby Shark cartoon had an openly lesbian couple in the show, but they don't take time to establish that. They just treat them like they would with any straight couple. How the hell does Baby Shark do a better job at being subtle with it's lgbt rep than this "adult show" that felt the need to talk down to it's audience?
Hell, even RWBY managed to have a more subtle trans character in May Marigold. She only confirms that she's trans in one brief line in Volume 8 while primarily explaining her strained relation with her former home of Atlas. (And given the Happy Huntresses are gender-bent versions of Robin Hood characters, it's creatively clever for their Maid Marion member to initially be a man and then be one of the _Huntresses.)_
Or My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic when it's revealed Scootaloo's guardians in Ponyville while her parents are away are her aunts, MARRIED aunts. And the dynamic is healthy and positive and done without the need to derail the story to spell it out.
I'm going to talk about the transition magic scene because it falls into a common pitfall in fantasy writing. Magic exists that can change your entire physiology with no downsides, I get that. Why is it treated as such a big deal? Why isn't everyone some homunculus comprised of everything they consider attractive? The allegory falls apart when applied to the world it inhabits. It's like the fantasy wheelchair debate that keeps popping up; there are much more interesting ways address disabilities, so much so that a mundane real-world item feels out of place and uninspired.
20:15 a way to fix it would be for Sage to say “it’s just a picture of cheesecake you carry for some reason” and have Rosemary say “it’s more than a cheesecake” and run off or “first it’s a picture of the best cheesecake in the land second it’s more than that” and run off
A lesson on sword. Rapiers are not "less lethal than a broadsword." Piercing attacks are in fact generally MORE lethal than slashing due to the higher chance of hitting vital organs. It was fashionable for dueling due to it's reach compared to other one-handed weapons of similar weight making it generally more effective in gentlemanly, unarmored, one-handed, 1v1 combat where both combatants are using a similar tier of weaponry. The thing is MOST swords were not battlefield weapons. They were sidearms. They could be carried on the hip comfortably making them easy to carry along with your other weapon or in day to day life, a feature which axes, maces, and polearms did not have. However, they were strictly inferior to other weapons on battlefield conditions. They had neither the reach of polearms nor the armor penetration of axes, maces, picks, hammers or even clubs. Yes, a big stick is a more effective weapon against armored foes than a sword. You can't cut through their helmet (unless it's a VERY bad helmet) but you can bonk them on the head. There are, of course, a few exceptions. There are several types of swords that are basically axes as well as some that are meant to be cut through specifically gambeson armor, like falchions and big meaty scimitars. These would be used with a shield to make up for the lack of reach but suffer greatly against metal armor. Then there is the greatsword, which is basically a polearm itself. The advantage of a greatsword over most other polearms is the ability to threaten multiple opponents at the expense of ease of use, durability of the blade edge, and armor penetration compared to poleaxes, polehammers, glaives, and halberds.

Rosemary is clearly written as a tomboy what they were trying to do from what I gather is the whole thing about boys liking stuff like bugs and raccoons and badges and stuff. basically liking scary gross or dangerous things and trying to catch it like little boys tend to do because they're kind of stupid. so I believe they were trying to display her tomboyish nature
Yeah, lets face it; if _Velma_ can get a season 2 despite its horrid reputation, then there's a good chance this travesty is going to get one as well... assuming Crunchyroll doesn't end up crashing and burning due to it's own incompetence and greed.
Not exactly, Velma has a "season 2" because of the practice of making one season, cut them into two, and call it a second season. Netflix is notorious for this with Sonic Prime, The Cuphead Show, and Inside Job. (For Sonic Prime specifically, they cut it into three parts as three seasons. Yeah, disgusting as hell!)
Thanks to a certain reviewer of said show you are referring too, I happen to know that it didn't actually get a season two. Season two was just part of season one and the split it and called it one and two. Something to do with making more money off it in an unethical way and paying animators less allegedly.
that title comfortingly reminds me of pieguys old spongebob reviews, feels weird I have been watching Mr. enter and Pieguy (hope hes chillin) for almost a decade used to pop vids like this on all the time before doing my college work.
There was an easy way to explain the multiple transportations. First show the life of pebble, with Rose and Sage getting ready to leave. The night before they leave, they look at a map, and showing how far it would be. First they go to the train, then a ferry to go across a large body of water, and the the mountain climber because the city is on top of a mountain. And the reason they don’t take broom is because they get uncomfortable on long trips. And everything else could’ve done a lot better. Like when they get to the city, all the buildings are different sizes, or built differently based on the inhabitants. And hell, make up a spell that allows characters be just big enough to fit in a room if it’s a smaller building.
An easy way would also just be to say...the broom is kinda slow and harder/less safe to use than just taking the transportation. Why do we have busses and cars in our modern world when everyone could just go on foot or use a bike?
Hmm... Weirdly enough, you bringing up the appeal of magical school stories has gotten me thinking. A big part of why real world schools are boring is largely due to the structure of the modern school system being about control (being influenced highly by the military, prisons, and the educational needs of factory assembly lines), so I can imagine a magic school system grounded in this same mentality being equally boring. What can and would make school interesting is being able to directly connect and interact with your future career path, and see the potential positive impact on the world you could have; as such, perhaps a school setting (magical or not), where even as a child you're being trained as if its a combination of an apprenticeship and a university college: the students get practical job tasks handed to them every so often that's within their current skill range, and get paid for it, and between these assignments are theoretical explorations of concepts that will be useful for a new type of task, which feeds back into the next round of practical job tasks.
I still enjoyed this show a decent amount funnily enough. The designs and dynamics were enough to make for a fun enough watch on its lonesome, and the animation quality didn’t rlly bother me as I’m used to being a big fan of many projects with awful production quality. I really think with some modifications and production changes, this show could’ve been something super fun, I can tell it has a beating heart that’s just constantly held down by the industry freshman creating it. To that end I hope the creator can rebound and get on another big project in the future, I don’t want them to be blackballed from bigger projects bc of this series. High Guardian Spice with a more seasoned Raye Rodriguez and a production crew that actually cared would’ve BANGED, and I do genuinely believe that.
Here's the thing, it's obvious from the show that the production value was there. They just didn't spend the money equally on all episodes. Some were made with the budget it needed, others on the budget of a school bologna sandwich. She (because you can't change your chromosomes or the fact her pelvis is wider than a man's) isn't that bad. Her writing staff on the other hand WAS. I do think if Raye had hired people based on merit, Hell, even if Ray ONLY wanted to hire women, she should have hired those based on their previous writing experience and not DEI filled with as much gay as possible, HGS could have been successful. I do think with shit like Velma getting a second season, there's a small, however small, but still a chance of it getting a season 2 and hopefully Raye gets a better writing crew. The directing seemed to be competent for the most part, the VA director could use a little more seasoning but hopefully they got it.
@@RealGateGuardian this is true to some extent, but you can tell the production value overall wasn’t very high to begin with. Noticeably with the voice work and audio mixing, it was unequal for every VA, and it sounded sometimes like someone was being recorded from a cave at times, and that’s enough to take you out of a show entirely all by itself. iirc the animation team didn’t follow all of the storyboards and sketches correctly, resulting in various scenes straight up lacking Raye’s intent with some of those sequences. As far as writing, I personally don’t really care much about that. I don’t know if the writers were hired through merit, if Raye just got his friends on the project, if Raye just hired based on gender, or otherwise - not that it’s really a problem to me, I’ve enjoyed plenty of media with all female teams. But I could’ve still enjoyed this show even if the writing was utter slop as long as everything else was above board and it was atleast fun and pretty to look at. I think either way you slice it Raye did get screwed on that project, and I would wish to see a season 2 for HGS sometime down the line. The chances of that are virtually nonexistent but it would be cool to see it picked up by a studio that actually cared and like I said before, with a more experienced version of Raye at the helm with more industry knowledge.
I, for the most part, did not enjoy it though it did have some fun parts, like the undead dragon randomly exploding. This is entirely NOT because of the animation quality, though it can be fun to pick at. The visuals has never really affected my enjoyment of something unless it is extremely good, in which it gets a couple plus points.
The weird thing is, I too have a strange fascination with this shit show of a show. But it's not that I watch it, my fascination is people FIXING it to be BETTER IN GENERAL.
U know the crazy part about Aster, he's not even THAT bad fr. The writers tried to make him worse than who he actually was, Aster is definitely an airhead and can be a bit of a dick by forgetting her name but honestly I don't find that as a bad thing, I just think it's a character thing or gag where she could continue to correct him like in another anime Needless or Demon Slayer for example. Plus at the end he was open to changing and admitted he was wrong but they wanted to make him look bad and honestly don't see the problem with Rose liking him either, ngl much better than her being or being around Sage she's just the fcking worst.

In Sorceror Stabber Orphen, they go to a village to meet an old partner of Orphen's, Stephanie. After magic/plot development/romantic rivalry shenanigans, it's revealed atcthe very end that Stephanie was once Stephen. And she gave up every last bit of power to fully transform herself into a woman, and despite no longer being a sorcerer she was happy with her new life and new body. SEE WRITERS? THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT RIGHT AND MAKE AN INTERESTING STORY AND CHARACTER
It's very generous to think that the implication of all men being toxic wasn't intentional. You know, considering the "kill all men" tumblr/twitter posts from some of the creators. And how the only male characters that aren't shitty are trans, trans by the nonexistent next season, or displaying traditionally feminine stereotypes (sensitive, crying corner boys or househusband and houseson baking the day away). Aside from unnamed teacher that allows hammers on students' toes, but that's probably because he's black so he gets the minority pass and he's not important to the plot. Heck, they make it that having a crush at all on a boy is a bad decision and you'll get over it by getting to know him. It seems very intentional to me.

I was skeptical on whether i wanted to watch his review of the series since it's been torn to shreds by SO many other youtubers. but i stayed for the whole thing. it's amazing how much this series makes no sense lol it never gets old. it should be a testament on how NOT to cartoon. the dialogue is what gets me the most. xD
I have such conflicting feelings about High Guardian Spice. There's SO much promise. I like the art STYLE (even if it wasn't executed well in animation), I like the premise, I like some of the bare ideas. But the execution is SO bad that even if they did get a second season with a better budget and more time, and a chance to learn from their mistakes, I don't know if they could redeem themselves. Maybe a whole reboot could fix the problems...but not a second season.
He did it. The mad man really did it. A sacrifice has been made. You didn't need to do any of this but by god you stared madness back in the eye of the abyss and didn't blink. Real talk tho yea this show was absolute trash from conception to execution.
I think i know how to fix the stupid of the locket, have Rose say, "It's special to me, and I need it," make it like a support animal or a stuffed toy kinda thing, then have her best friend Sage kinda go "is from your mom" or foreshadow its Rose mom kinda thing. Then, have Rose get defence with it and go from there, and then when she gets the locket, Have Rose hide what is inside and every so often show her looking at it, then at a use point like bad guys showing up or Rose is losing her mind, or I idk Rose brainwashed or something, show the lock and BOOM! It shows that Rose pressures herself to be like her mom but doesn't want to be weak, so she hides it from people! grow that rose doesn't like to be weak and belive that "Stegeath = power" kinda of thing

Part of me wants to take on the challenge of reimagining this as a proper anime, but at the same time I feel like doing so would be wasting my time on a lost cause.
Passionate hatebase would be a more accurate term. People are like, doing the undertale thing where everyone does their own version. But not because they want more of the content they gave us, people want to actually just replace the official canon in the public contiousness at some point.
Normally if you want to justify magic based worlds having schools you usually just want to individualize classes based on types or roles. For example, a course designed to teach rouges how to use their stealth and stealing skills, with a minor in combat with another character who isn't much of a fighter. With lunch or group training sessions being a time for us to develop the group dynamics

May you find as much pleasure in doing so as the rest of us do.) It is how the DM decides his/her races to be in his/her world. My DM has stoic elves…amongst the short lived races, because to them a human lives within a blink of an eye. But they love deeply, and are filled with the joy of life.
This show was something.... From romances that went nowhere to bad trans representation,this series was not what I expected and seeing the madness unfold was a crazy experience! Hopefully we don't get more series like this! Lastly I'm not into fantasy but if I was I would have hated this show!
