The Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins flat out said that they were going to cast the show to look like "America will look in a hundred years". Which is why you can't have 8 people on screen without at least half a dozen different ethnicities represented. Everyone looks like they are from everywhere. So no one looks like they are from anywhere.

If they were serious about that, projecting population statistics out should have had four or five white to three or four Latino and one black and one Asian for every ten people onscreen.

It's box ticking, employing the 'merits' of talentless, arrogant, 'diverse' individuals over creativity, intelligence, passion and knowledge. It's no longer 'who you know' to get a foot in the door, it's what 'causes' do you care about. Spout enough buzzwords without being asked to what exactly do they mean and how you're such an advocate of (fill the gap), and you're in. Ezra Miller still gets his flash movie despite all the shit he's done, 'cos pronouns and identity. Henry Cavill gets treated like a puppet, says "fuck it, why should I be expending energy on this shit". What was it, barely a day later and a piss poor attempt at character assassination is on the interwebs. Fucking cretinous, skill-free ideologues . The biggest obstacles they ever encountered was common sense, logic, and the availability of soy mocha lattes ethically sourced cos it says so on the packet.

@sianais

Diversity to them means erasing everyone's culture. Look at Avatar the last Airbender, you could tell who was from where by features and dress. Look at actual history, you can tell Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Filipino, Vietnamese, etc cultures apart despite the overlaps they had with one another, you can even identify particular tribes and subsets of each. The same is true for every place on earth except these diversified worlds. Everybody gets broad stroked as white, black, asian and latino, and to not leave out anyone in those sweeping categories, nobody gets a specific culture. Actual diversity can't exist in their version of diversity.
@gimmeyourrights8292

The thing is the witcher is not any generic fantasy world. The netflix shows are😭. The books and games especially witcher 3 are such a mature fantasy world. The world and characters are so grey, complex and the theme that there is no right choice but only a less evil is so well done especially in the witcher 3. Its about choices and consequences. But the netflix franchise fails miserably at capturing the themes and essence of the incredible source material. And I've given up waiting for the last book (or two) ..), but I really liked the way the distinct cultures were depicted in the series. In the universe of The Witcher, there is actually a great way where they can be able to be diverse as much they want... That is, by dumping every race in the Empire of Nilfgaard since it is really accessible to the other race and since no matter how bad Nilfgaard is portrayed, they welcome change so it would also give the story a much more gray area than what it shows in the series.

They did exactly the same thing to the Wheel of Time, where one of the major plot points was that our heroes came from a tiny village that had no contact with the outside world - yet somehow was full of racially mixed cosmopolitan teenagers. And the wider world, which did have almost every race imaginable represented in the books living in their own nations, somehow had every possible type of person in every scene in every location - so the viewer had no idea where they were and why the characters had bothered going there, unless you were willing to try to study the half-baked stylistic and architectural differences between those locations. Which was useless because the showrunners hadn't cared enough to make any. So while in LotR the viewer instantly knew where they were due to the buildings/decor/clothes/climate, every scene in WoT, RoP, WitcherBO and Willow, could be anywhere and nobody cares.

It's akin to the "harfoots" in the RoP series. They were described as xenophobic and insular, having stayed away from outsiders "for a thousand years". Yet their small tribe was, of course, incredibly multiracial, "to represent the world we live in". The people who write this stuff don't believe in escapism. They don't believe in crafting an actual fictional world. They want to just take a picture of downtown LA and slap some pointed ears on everyone there and say "Good enough". In my country, Hungary, there was a very discriminating law in the 1930s that restricted the proportion of Jewish people in many crafts like lawyer, doctor, school teacher etc. The problem was that Jewish people on average were much more educated than other people in the country, but because of the law, many of them were forced not to work as a doctor for example and had to take a more simple job. Now Hollywood is doing the same thing. They exclude people from being story writers for TV shows just because they have the wrong color of skin/sex/sexuality (=they are white heterosexual males) and give the job to other people who are not required to have any talent, just having the proper "diversity" attributes. The result are TV shows like this new Willow or Rings of Power or The Witcher Blood Origins.

Love the video, not only does making every fantasy world a huge mixture of races makes it slowly watered down to boring and uninteresting. It also actually puts difficult in following the story at times. As when there’s actually conflict between a specific tribe, country, kingdom-etc. you can get visually confused on which tribe is which especially if they’re outfits and architecture are bland and don’t have any thought into it. You can just see them all blend together and therefore have even more difficulty following into the story than usual as your only thinking “wait what location is this again??” I really wish writers would stop being so stuck up about “making sure it reflects the world we live in today” as what they’re doing untrue and the opposite of the statement they’re saying. Not every country is like Los Angeles or New York where it’s a melting pot of cultures in fact a majority of people like to stick to groups similar to themselves which goes back centuries in world history. I’d like a fantasy world where there’s is a distinct difference in ethnicity between tribes and yet there’s maybe one village known for its melting pot of all of them. This makes the melting pot of cultures feel much more likable and intriguing to how such a thing is made because it’s so rare and not just because “meh diversity box checked”

One touchy issue is that the source material for The Witcher, Lord of The Rings and The Wheel of Time are pretty much entirely white and especially for the main character. Perhaps diversity to some degree is necessary today, but indeed it needs to be done with context and purpose. You can't just throw an African and a European in a script and claim that they're sister and brother. It breaks the suspension of disbelief. Another biological and sociological fact is that if you had a bunch of black, white and asian people in one city and society, only 400 years later you would have a huge distribution of skin tones and most of them would be an average combination of black-white-asian. People would not remain black or white in a mixed society that continues for hundreds of years.

@katechandlerillustrations6858
I think there are two ways to do it. If you want your fantasy world to feel believable it needs to follow laws of nature. Genetically unique populations exist for a reason and are accompanied by cultures that give you a lot of room for awesome lore. Showing where populations moved, and merged and how long they have been in contact adds so much to the story. I think the world of Game of Thrones is amazing at this and learning about those cultures and their interactions is so cool. Wouldn't it make more sense to have a story where people from several different racial and cultural backgrounds had to come together to deal with a threat? Something like the myth of the Prince that was Promised in SOIAF could be translated into a story about a group of heroes with a different mythology about a threat, and we view the reality through each cultural lens. That feels like a way to work that in with more respect and dignity than a world where you see distinct racial profiles but no rationale to where they came from. Now, there is a place for that sort of colorblind casting. Shows like The Great, Galavant and Bridgerton manage to pull it off because the story is told in a way where it's not meant to be realistic. It's almost like a play, where it's all about the story and the performance, and it's not trying to get you to really believe in it. There is an expectation for the audience to be cued into this and dismiss it. A show like Rings of Power wants you to take it seriously but fails to bring the integrity that comes with a well-fleshed-out fantasy word that reflects elements of truth. By contrast something like Galavant and Bridgerton say from the start "This is a story set in a made up world where it is more important to be amusing than plausible".

The thing with diversity in urban environments or even cities. Many of those different groups still hold onto their culture, language and beliefs. In my neighborhood in Brooklyn, some blocks have predominantly Hispanic and Latino people and in others predominantly European particularly polish and further on Hasidic Jewish people. Even in my schools had a mix of black, Asian, Indian etc and many of kept their traditions from their respective cultures. It’s but the diversity in the cast, it’s the microscopic view in which these “writers” see these diverse neighborhoods. They probably also don’t want to be accused of “cultural appropriation” which is why many of these fantasy shows are all the same generic looking landscapes. But also they all hold European settings to a much higher standard than their own and even other cultures. Because now they demand diversity but they also demand that the creators “look like” or “is” of that demographic without ever asking if they’re exploring all aspects of that culture or just the bare minimum.

The main cast is diverse, but they all come from different tribes. But we all know they're not going to do that in this show. You might argue that they're setting it in modern times precisely so they can have diverse people in every town, but as this video proves, this is not really a concern for showrunners. And it's not that a black person can't be living in a village bumfuck nowhere in the North, but does it pain the writers to throw a line like "Me/my family/ancestors aren't from here. We/They moved here in search of a better life." It's so simple but at least it's something. Also, the L.A diversity only apples to Fantasy Europe - Fantasy Africa and Fantasy Asia are mega homogenic. No white people in neither, as usually also no black people in Fantasy Asia and no asians in Fantasy Africa. I think it has to do with the politics of that entire area. The very political fabric of the west coast is defined by wokism. It's not diverstity that's the issue, it's wokism. By wokism I mean something that should be classified as a disorder with the likes of shizophrenia or the Dark Triad. These aspects are: 1. Worship of the "current thing," in this case being diversity and jamming in minorities and bullcrap where it doesn't make sense 2. Arrogance such that it means sufferers are unable or unwilling to do step outside of their social and cultural bubble, nevermind do research on what people wore (you can see this in how they think all medieval people look like stupid filthy peasants in sackcloth). 3. Narcissism such that instead of making their own shows they latch themselves onto pre-existing shows then suck the show dry to hang up their crap. I have to agree that diversity could work, hell there's ways one can show that without having 20,000 skin colors. Food, clothing styles, and hell social mores. What goes in a city like Dallas doesn't go in a small farm town in Hunt County. And if they have to have skin color diverstiy it can work. If it makes sense. If the series takes place on a fantasy version of Sicily where it's between a sea and so numerous ethnic groups and is a vital trade area it'd be cool, really cool. Hell, if they want women and minorities in power the focus could be on the city while the king, most of the nobility and the genuinely strong men are away fighting a war, leaving just a few to try and maintain stability. But they never do that. Instead what they do is they buy the rights to something popular then they ruin everything. And once all interest in the franchise is gone, the vandals move to the next one, like locusts

Rules in fantasy are unwritten & unspoken, but like glass cristal, once broken the fantasy itself fails. Fantasy is the last refuge of Mythos, the strong force of dreams that the Ancient Greeks and many civilizations before them, made to explain and give a moral to a world uncertain and perilous, full of wonder and danger. It's simple: The Neverending Story never cared for inclusivity and all that jazz, the moral of it was universal and easily understood regardless of gender, age and ethnicity. We often underestimate how much our surroundings shape our storytelling, and here it's detrimental to the realism of the story, especially when your audience is millions of people who often live in the countryside themselves. Interestingly enough, the countryside remains highly homogeneous even in today's globalist society. Go to a big metropolis anywhere in Europe and you're bound to see people of all languages and creeds running around. But in the countryside? The people living there have been there for generations. And it takes A LOT to be accepted into a small community in the country, because they've been mostly homogeneous for that long.

One thing that really annoys me about modern fantasies story is that there's no diversity in them. Yes, there are people with different colors of skin, but what about cultural diversity? I live in a country that's almost entirely white, yet people from different parts of it have different and unique cultures of their own, we all speak the same language but in different ways (which makes it easy to identify from which part of a country that person comes from). And my country is small, with population of around 7 million people. Than you look at these "big" fantasy worlds and everyone talks the same way, behaves the same way, believes in exact same things etc. It's like some sort of bizarre dystopian, totalitarian world where everyone is forced to act in just one way and no other.

It's time to start fighting against hundreds of years of conditioning and art and fight directly against the current for no reason really, just make people's lives worse I guess, including for people who aren't beautiful, ruining the entire pot of soup just because you wanted to have the entire thing be ugly for sociopolitical reasons. Imagine the insecurity.

I hate how everyone that makes content criticizing this insane diversity agenda has to pretend that the diversity, in and of itself, is a good thing. It's not. What's good is creating interesting and believable worlds that make people want to pay for entertainment products. If diversity just happens to occur organically from that, then fine. But if it doesn't, then equally fine. There's nothing good about about diversity as a concept. It either occurs or it doesn't in the process of creating something good.

A brilliant video, not overly prentious, or even patronizing. Just a solid commentary on the modern day landscape of the fantasy genre.

Representation is not great. A character needs to be a character, his own individual being, if he is a representative of a race or idea, he will be poorly written on a fundamental level.

the fun part is they are against "opression" and "colonisation" but all they do is force their way of thinking on everyone else completly disregarding other peoples sensibilities. They cry triggerwarnings and isms if some view is opposing theirs but at the same time rub their views into your face as you scream stop. They want to make every show look like a modern us american city for diversity, completly ignoring that most places on earth dont look like this and diversity is in thinking and culture, not skin color. A small medieval town out nowhere with 100 people living there has to consist of 3 ethnicities that all live there for centuries. HOW. the only way that could happen in reality is if they are all severly inbred and are repulsed by the others skin color. Great message?

I tend to look at diversity in fantasy through your basic DnD party. It is made up of different races (human, elf, dwarf and halfling) and classes (fighter, cleric, rogue and wizard). These can be done in any combination. However you can swap any of the races for different ones and even some of the classes but it is still a good idea to have a balance in the party along the lines of class rather than race. So you could have a party of all gnomes for example which covers all 4 classes and this would be better than a party of warlocks who are different races. My point is that what you do is more important that what you are.

Also, if you live in a ethnically diverse society the ethnic makeup is not static, unless you have segregated populations sooner or later, within just a few generations your society won't BE very diverse anymore, it will all start to blend together and considering the amount of mixed coupling they like to show in these shows, this process would be much accelerated. IF one wants to be realistic :)

Even good fantasy shows like House of the Dragon has this problem. Not. As bad as Rings of Power or Witcher. It breaks my heart as love fantasy genre. But maybe it's time to left go of the fantasy as woke pod people Californians has infected it.
