My fuel of choice is often charcoal specifically, as trees can always be replanted. Not only that, but using 1 piece of charcoal to turn 8 logs into 8 charcoal is just a plain profit as far as I'm concerned, essentially allowing me to multiply my charcoal by eight each time.

I had no idea some of those items could be used as fuel; only tried lava once & realized it wasn't for me in my world at this time; lately have gone to kelp - easier than mining/caving for coal. I convert bamboo to sticks to trade with a villager. After fishing I disenchant the bows and fishing rods then throw them into a chest/hopper-fed furnace for those items I smelt only a few at time - makes me feel like I'm recycling and helping the (Minecraft) environment, lol.

It's great, but if you're gonna smelt a pretty big amount of items in a super smelter with an array of more than 5 furnaces, it's bound to stop working at some point. Believe me, I tried. Maybe if you improve the design to allocate more fuel in less time?
@tomdalton4016
@tomdalton4016 3 года назад
@@BluJayMC smelting large amounts in a few furnaces lava works great . But in super smelters that spread the smelting out over 8 furnaces you would need to be smelting 13 stacks 26, 39 etc to be fuel efficient . What may be effective is matching your fuel to the furnace array size . In a single furnace with no automatic feeds into it anything over 64 is not efficient. I have a kelp farm that feeds a single smoker I just load up the lava and it’s 100% efficient furnace wise.

When you cook with lava... you get the empty bucket back which you can refill with lava. So really you just need a few buckets and a source of lava nearby or a lava drip rig. So, I don't see the issue with iron being a problem with lava fuel use.

I’d use coal blocks personally. It’s easy to find and you can also use trees and it’s also stackable. So if you mine tons of coal and stack up coal blocks or something you can definitely cook tons of items. However if I were to find bamboo and make a farm then I’d might consider bamboo. But if your to get bamboo you’ve got to find the jungle which isn’t always easy.

Quick note that carpet is a really underrated fuel source, especially mid-late game. You can easily make a really efficient, really cheap, and really compact carpet duper, which you can hook directly to your super smelter and never have to worry about fuel ever again. The difference between this and other renewable sources is that it is extremely easy with access to slime (which you would need for a bamboo farm anyways) and it is small enough that it would be in the way and you can just have it feed directly into your super smelter.
@opax

In my opinion, Scaffolding is the best as it takes 6bamboo(u can smelt 1.5 items by that much) and 1string, most people have a source for string- spider spawners, iron farms or cat farms and bartering farms(its the most common because still some people can't find spider spawners) And with that scaffolding you can smelt 6items each, so as most people have a source for string, its the best and you can always easily get an easy source(spawner being the hardest as it takes the most time). A cat farm is easier than a villager breeder and if u have an iron farm, u still get string, if u find a spawner, its obvious that u are going to make a farm out of it and bartering farm is also a must have.

Anyone unfamiliar with farms, factor in Bones for Bamboo. You need to provide the Bamboo farm Bonemeal, so be ready to hunt plenty of Skellies or secure a Skellie Spawner you can convert to a bone/other items/XP(optional) farm to keep you flush with Bones (and Arrows). BlueJay's super-number-one-very-good-best-friend Prowl has a really good Skeleton Spawner farm video that includes a switch to change the farm from drop kill to one-hit kill so you can sit there and punch them for XP by leaving the button pressed and use a Looting Sword for more items, if you like. I like.

Here's the real math - one quarter stack of bamboo + a super simple bit of redstone directly over your smelting system = infinite fuel you never have to think about ever again. It's really only worth it to use lava, coal blocks or kelp blocks if you're smelting multiple shulkers of ores in a continuous feed.

Really enjoyed the video! I was surprised to see there wasn’t any difference in burning planks and slabs. Since planks are half the size, I thought they burned less. I don’t use lava as fuel because most time I don’t have a lot to smelt at one time so I feel it is wasteful. I hadn’t thought about the cost in iron, it not stacking or how annoying it is to get, all good points. Looking forward to the next video! Take care.

So this is the hard way but surely worth it. :- Make a pumpkin farm. Attach the collecting chest to an auto composter. Attach the bonemeal collected to a dispenser system to a kelp farm. Atach auto smelter to it with fuel being bamboo(if you think why not directly use bamboo then. It's because it might work good for small things but for a big system like a super smelter you need a loads of them. (1 kelp block=80 bamboos). Collect dried kelp blocks And now you have the best possible auto fuel farm which is stackable and damn efficient :). Works good for me. Now I don't have to roam around for smelting things.

i think bamboo is one of the worst fuel sorces because even though it is renewable, so is charcoal, if you have a tree farm, automatic or not, you can get alot more uses for it. To smelt the charcoal u dont need crazy farms that are not worth it.
@KILAH4716

This seams like a heavily opinionated topic. My answer depends on what and how much I'm smelting. If I have a project that requires 5 stacks of stone bricks, then I will use lava if I'm able to, and can get that lava back. But if I'm cooking a stack of steak, then 8 Charcoal will be just fine. But I use materials I can always get back somehow easily, or have plenty of. In my current world, I'm using Coal, Charcoal and Coal Blocks, but I have a lot of iron and one of my next projects is a lava generator. Once that's finished, I can reserve coal and charcoal for other things like torches.

A carefully engineered loading/storing system favours the the lava bucket approach & buckets are reusable. Your style of play & what aspects of the game you favour the most also affect the situation cos lava buckets work perfectly for miners over builders & farmers. As a miner/farmer over everything else, it's dig down for ore's & grab the lava, eventually set up a minecart system (harvesting track from old mines) & that works a lot better, for me. Just always keep your furnace system stacked & smelt anything of value for XP - fill your system & real world time it & then you know when you need to get back to reload it, unless you've got a massive set up & your furnaces burn for 8-10hrs real world times. Lava buckets for the win!!

Lava buckets I love them if you have an iron farm it’s always better to use lava buckets than coal I use my coal as torches early to mid game coal is the best but it always depends on the situation like I went to the forest and thought I am tired of doing back and forts for wood so I destroyed the whole forest and got many sapling I planted 2 stacks of them and burned the rest as fuel so it depends on the situation and I am constructing a huge bamboo farm already and this video puts the last nail in the coffin coal I recommend use for torches just get 4 or 5 lava buckets you will be fine it will be worth walking then losing all your stuff in a maze underground just use lava then build a bamboo farm later save your coal for torches

My personal favorite is the lava bucket but I got lucky and I have lava pretty much in my backyard. There was a little lava pit. It's just enough to where you can get lava out and it replenishes without ever going empty and I've even been thinking about filling up enough lava buckets and putting them in my third floor basement LOL that way I don't even have to go to my backyard, just down into my underground base

I'd say ranking isnt accurate due to the situation uses. For example, lava buckets for a full double chest which took 162 iron (After 2 medium size caves I have 2 double chest full and 2 hoppers plus the furnace slot for a total of 357 iron. I still have 3 full stacks of iron blocks. Yes mining can be difficult but is very rewarding when you dont skip everything) can smelt for about 8 hours, very useful for exp storing and huge smelting projects. For single stacks I like using coal, or even replacing the lava with the coal (this may seem weird, but I am a coal addict. I mine it as much as any other ore and will even use fortune 3 on it because of how much I use it. If it wasnt for lava I'd probably be out by now and I have a row and a half of full coal blocks). Bamboo is good for making auto smelters, and for bedrock I believe there is a way for scaffolding to be used for big smelts as well (late game, needs redstone) Over all, I'd say charcoal specifically is the best full source as it doesnt require a jungle or an ocean or a cave or the nether to get and is pretty much always available as long as you have logs to burn. (With 1.17 charcoal will even be there in the caves due to mineshafts which will make it available there too, and with 1.16 it is also available in the nether due to the two wood biomes)
