George Harrison was not only a superb guitar player, song-writer, and innovator in The Beatles, but also forged a brilliant solo career that is often overlooked compared to that of Lennon and McCartney's.
In his thirty years as a solo artist, George Harrison created some of the finest compositions of the 20th century.
He may have been the toughest ex-Beatle to figure out, but he showed us who he was through his music which was honest, intriguing and deeply spiritual.
In this video I have ranked his post-Beatles studio albums from worst to best and have also explored his other projects such as Traveling Wilburys, film soundtracks, and his thrilling live albums.

TWO CORRECTIONS: • The guy I said was “Legs” Larry Smith is actually Vivian Stanshall. Legs is the drummer of the band. • John and Paul didn't veto 'All Things Must Pass', George decided to hold out on it til later.

I always thought you were too hard on Flowers In The Dirt so I lit up when you revised your opinion on that one. I agree about the bad 80s production, but I think the actual songs are really good on that album. I've come to really love the demos of many of those songs performed with Elvis Costello. They don't have that awful 80s over production and they are raw and passionately sung kind of like the Get Back sessions. And Thank you for your fine comprehensive videos that are enjoyable and informative.

George, an amazing spiritual man as all of the Beatles are. While my love of, for and about the Beatles never wavered but continually changes. They have music for all phases of life and all types of love and lives. All creation becomes love. There is and are parts of this group we may never discover in this or other lifetimes but allow ourselves to enjoy. Thank you to the four wonderful souls and all who form a musical backdrops to many lives and lifetimes that create the unity of souls that we are. We are love and if we listen music acknowledges and reflects love in all. Nothing finite,, nothing that may be defined. Love, just and only love, amazing , wonderful love. Undefinable love. As a lifelong Harrison fan (I'm now 70 years old), it is rare for me to see and hear a much younger fan who "gets it". Thank you for a lovingly produced and in-depth look at his music. George changed my life, and I believe that he is having a profound effect on yours as well. Although I think Brainwashed should be #1, I find no fault at all with your ratings. It's all subjective in the end. Thank you!😊

It's not the first time I've heard someone say that George changed their lives but mostly by younger people, which is intriguing, especially when some of these people weren't even born when he died. Just curious what do you think it is about George and his music that affects people in this way. ?
@getoffthestage263
@getoffthestage263 6 месяцев назад
Another 70 year old here and I agree! I very much enjoy these videos and it's nice to see a youngster giving George his due. This video prompted me to revisit ATMP, which I've never been terribly fond of. The demo recordings opened my ears a little - allowing me to hear the melodies that were hidden by Spector bombast. The album - including the demos release - moved up in my top George albums to number 4, right behind 1. George Harrison, 2. Dark Horse and 3. Material World.

@@gore1089 I'm no longer really young (although there was a time I was considered a 'young' Beatles fan - born after John's death but I was in college when George died) - and I think it's perhaps the sense of authenticity and seeking something genuine/larger, but combined with humility/self-deprecation. I think that's what mostly saves George from feeling like he's 'preaching' or 'lecturing' since he is on the journey as well. Plus I just do think a lot of his melodies are just timeless and sound great, in a way that stands the test of time.

Dude, just finished watching this entire epic on George Harrison. I liked the McCartney one you did, but this one blows that one away. The thing is, George never was able to do all things must pass again. It's a near perfect album, but it's his only near perfect album. I'd say John had 3 albums in that level, and Paul has had, in my opinion about 5, maybe 6. Now keep in mind, most artists would be thrilled with 1 album of that quality, but you get the feeling that if he didn't have 3 or 4 years to work on that album it wouldn't have been that quality

can't wait for you to do Ringo, he's got some great tunes that are overlooked. When I first got into doing music at an older age his RINGO album, with its lack of pretension, was one of my biggest influences. Every track sounds like a lost Beatles song sung by Ringo, and most of his other albums have great stuff on them as well

Thank you. As the self described greatest fan of George Harrison (just my humble opinion) this was superbly and lovingly completed. I differed just a bit from your rankings (but you had them ranked fairly similar to what I would have). One of my favorite tracks that you didn't discuss was The Day The World Gets Round from Living In The Material World. It was a quirky and lyrically somewhat awkward piece but I loved it and I was really thrilled when Cat Stevens of all people decided to cover it and did a nice job I thought with it. But thanks, just really enjoyed your deep dive into George's catalog.

Great video, BUT! As a Jeff Lynne superfan, I need to point out that he never said he wanted ELO to “pick up where the Beatles left off with Strawberry Fields.” It was actually Roy Wood who said it, and Jeff has been living it down for years. Of course, it doesn’t change the fact that Lynne is a huge Beatles fan.

TBH it's pretty much the same with both Paul & George. Of course Paul has some weaker ones but that happens when you put out more music and for a much longer period. I'd say both also have three truly not good records with Extra Texture, Somewhere In England & Gone Troppo with George and Press To Play, Off The Ground & Driving Rain for Paul.

I'd put this on the same level with the Scorcese document. I just love how George's sometimes overflooded spirituality is portrayed in a new and refreshing way here, I got over some godly titles on some albums and learned to really like them in the different light you gave. I received not one but TWO copies of All Things Must Pass for my 10th birthday. And yet, I have never taken George as seriously as John and Paul until watching your passion for him and his work in this video. I need to go back and listen to everything again. And where the heck did you find all of that Fab Footage? Your research skills are excellent! Maybe the only weakness is you sorta miss his spiritual depth (yet not really since you are so insightful) but you’re so damn cute - even looking like George - that I can only applaud and celebrate an excellent job honoring one of the greatest musicians EVER uniting the wisdom of the East with the talent and electricity of the West - thank you thank you - your karma has gone up several lifetimes for this great service to all awakened minds and lovers of The Beatles - you rock, but George rocks and slides even better! this means the world to me. Yeah, maybe it's just a youtube video for the general audience, but for me, it's actually the nearest form of content that the platform was supposed to be created for. Talking about art, music, and people that altered and impacted our lives in such profound ways is sacred because it gives a human being the opportunity to see beyond the walls of our eyes, a vision that only extends to a limited horizon at first. I am 18 , I am so young and I have so many things to experience and learn. i actually am romanian , and here the beatles are not so mainstream because our culture is stained with communism that lasted until 1989. and so when the beatles were together in the 60s, we did not have access to foreign media, maybe just really privileged, rich people that imported a very limited quantity of records. My grandparents have no ideea about , well , anything pop culture , music fashion related because they lived in a crystal ball. My parents were the generation that kinda were introduced to this whole new world. i grew up hearing my dad singing john lennon songs and actually saying at 7 years old that my favorite song is "jealous guy". My musical renaissance started about a year and a half , two years ago when i deep dived into music. the beatles changed my live, they changed everything. george harrison was always, from the moment i started listening to their discography, the person that intrigued me the most. i could write an essay about him. i won't. not here. anyways, what i am trying to say and i am ofc rambling and saying nothing really with substance, THANK YOU ELLIOT for actually caring and putting so much effort in a video like this, and dedicating so much of your time and mental capacity to tell your story regarding this complex human being . before i saw the notification that you uploaded i was listening to "be here now" and thinking how much this song means to me(probably the most visceral song that i have ever heard , and i can't even say why). thank you.

You were 100% correct when you said that everyone who listens to “My Sweet Lord” would at some point think it’s the best song of all time. If you were to randomly approach me and ask me my opinion about the song, I would definitely rank it in my top 10, but not necessarily #1 - BUT, when I actually sit down and listen to it (especially when I’m in a particular mood), I get overcome with emotion in a very specific way that I never get when listening to any other song, even gospel. I’m not a super spiritual person, but I truly believe that George was able to tap into some high power when he wrote “My Sweet Lord.”

ELLIOT : I was lucky enough to have spent the 70s working for several Record Labels Unfortunately none of them were involved with Harrison ( With the exception of Hard Days Night and Let it Be). I did know of his generosity through people who worked for His “ Dark House Records” . They were treated with respect and a huge degree of love. You have provided us with a continuity absent from the vast preponderance of Biographical Video Discographies. I was unfamiliar with your work.Again Bravo! There were so many facts included probably unknown to most. Can you imagine the Band of Richard Tee- Tom Scott & Co. backing George. We did work with the L.A. Express on James Guerico Caribu Records. What a band! Few bother to go into the depth and interpretation of the lyrics of an artist's entire Catalog. Thoughts you’ve presented appear enjoyably researched. Thank you for your beautiful description of all George's albums, but especially "All Things Must Pass." Its outburst of majestic creativity was so beautiful that I think it caught his former bandmates off-guard. Publicly, Lennon was dismissive of the album saying in a Rolling Stone interview in 1970: “I don’t know… I think it’s all right, you know. Personally, at home, I wouldn’t play that kind of music, I don’t want to hurt George’s feelings, I don’t know what to say about it.” However, Dhani Harrison pointed to a later interview with Bobby Whitlock (member of Clapton's band Dereck & the Dominoes, and one keyboard player on "All Things Must Pass") saying, “I remember Lennon coming to the studio during the recording sessions quite friendly and being played it, and he was visibly blown away.” Quite so! McCartney, on the other hand, appears to have made no statements, public or private. I do not find that surprising, considering that upon George's death, he confined his memories of his long-time bandmate to a pre-Beatles thumb-trip to Wales, where they killed a couple of spiders named Jerome and Jemima. Cloying, considering George's cornerstone contributions.
