Only retains power for a few seconds. I’ve even done them with the battery still connected. If you ever wanna know what it feels like to defuse a bomb, go for it😬😂
Love that look, so glad to finally watch this video, i too have a 04 Tahoe and none of my switches on the wheel light up any more. Looks like im going to swap in exactly everything you just did! Great videos man!
Heads up to anyone doing this, even if you disconnect your battery there is still some juice in the electrical system due to the compacitors storage in alot of the control boards. Keep your key switched on for a minute or two. Wont hurt anything will just make sure any residual energy is disapated so no chance in the airbag go off. Ive seen it happen even with the battery completely removed from the vehicle due to the residual energy in the electrical system. Airbags are really sensitive when it comes to electric shock. Even a strong enough static electricity shock could potentially set it off
The hole in the TA console between the window switches is for a power mirrors switch. Glad you finally put a video up for the steering wheel, looks killer just wish Grant or any other company made one for 99-02
Some 85-86 had them on the driver door but all 87-92 where in the console between the window switches, Trust me, I've owned 7 Trans Am's (2 GTA Trans Am) and they all had that switch in that spot, I think my 82 had it on the door though
You are starting to cost me a lot of money. I happened across your channel when I typed in "Tahoe" in the search bar. So far I have received my Tru-Cool heavy duty trans cooler and I am now waiting on the complete bracket kit from Tim. The tranny cooler is a must, the steering wheel is a "nice to have" that may be done after the leveling and 285's are on. I could "trade" my wife's TrailBlazer airbag for my Tahoe's and she probably wouldn't notice. Keep up the good work and quality videos. Nice to have informative videos without the cheesy and over the top music that detracts from what is being presented or explained. I don't know where you are in NY, but I'll be cruising up that way from NC in August to Lake George. Later. PS: It might be a good thing we sold the wife's 91' RS several years ago. I would be putting money into that again. Not a bad thing, but an addiction is an addiction.
you kept us waiting for this but worth the wait! cherish the streering wheel controls since the paint will wear off the more you use them, but good job man can't wait to see those new wheels next
All you have to do it bang it from the back side to side and it will break loose without using that tool hitting it with you palms from back of the steering wheel towards you
Question I want to also update my steering wheel I’ve already done the Blue Led Swap for all my switches I have a 05 GMC Yukon Denali so could I use the GMC Envoy Airbag to update the look plus my Airbag needs to be replaced I think anyway the light came on weeks ago I’d like to get the wood grain wheel of a Escalade and use the Envoy AB but it’s different style
The wheel looks great but the trailblazer airbag doesn't fit good it's not flush with the wheel and that would drive me crazy. Id buy that wheel but my 242k Mile 04 Suburban wheel is in insanely good shape I just need new buttons as they are worn
Hi Matt had a question. I have 2003 Yukon I am interested in adding steering wheel controls. My truck didnt come with them. Can I add the Envoy wheel with a Yukon clockspring.
Love all your videoes mate, especially Tahoe ones, I was wondering, what's the chance that my 2000 suburban with no media keys on the steer wheel could swap out with one that has, or wire the job manually? Is it alot of hassle?
I think you can swap over steering wheel controls from the same year. Check out this thread: www.gmfullsize.com/threads/95-98-99-02-steering-wheel-audio-control-install.147628/
Is it possible to replace the steering wheel on a 07-11 LTZ Tahoe with the heated steering wheel that was standard on 12-14 LTZ models. Its my must have feature, but its not available on older models in the same generation. Is there is some special circuit or wire needed. I can't seem to find anyone who has done this mod. My mechanic friend said its not worth replacing it for heated steering wheel and i should just get the truck with one already stock. Has anyone done this? Matt, love these Tahoe videos!
Wow a wobbly wheel no problem but a worn button or a steering wheel that is as with as the truck oh no. Lol thatvwobble is in the tilt mechanism. If it gets bad enough that wheel will jyst spin free nothing will happen . Had it happen fixing the wobbly wheel should've been priority
Airbags are really dangerous why does the government force us to have them in our cars? Why doesn't the regulators or the government pay for injuries caused by airbags? Also the government shouldn't take my money to pay for airbag injuries so they should stop forcing us to have them in our cars.
@@Dubst3pT3ch Well it is hard to test your theory. All cars basically from the mid 90's on have airbags. Also airbags and other safety features on cars may actually be causing more reckless driving. It could be they are causing high speed accidents.
@@Dubst3pT3ch I kinda agree with your statement. Cause I had a head on collision with a motorist going waayyy to fast on a curved wet road (was a two way road). Keep in mind I was pregnant at the time.could not advoid him at all. Soon as I saw him coming I placed my arms in front of me out of panic than BOOM!! MY arms, stomach, and waist was all f'ed up. The force of hitting that steering wheel was so freaking painful. I couldn't describe it. On top of that my air bag deployed late.when it did deploy. It was like getting smacked hard with a pillow with a ball behide it. I really wished the air deployed. The force of hitting the wheel cause so much trumatic and so much bleeding for my unborn. Lord knows I & my unborn should have been dead. Sorry for the long comment.
Im 18 and i got a 05 tahoe and i forgot what i searched but ur vid popped up and ive been watching ur mod vids and tbh its so motivating to waste my money on my tahoe😂
I've never used a steering wheel puller in my life. by growing up poor I became quite creative so I learned to yank them off easily lol. good video man
I’m loving the Tahiti series. I’ve been wanting to spruce up an early 2000s Tahoe or Suburban myself for awhile. I got a study guide now for if i ever get around to it! 👍
The loose column is from the tilt mechanism. My 06 Yukon had that problem when it was brand new, dealer replaced under warranty. Most of the time I get those steering wheels off by leaving the nut on a few turns and banging on the back of the wheel a few times then rocking it back and forth. Also hitting the shaft with a little PB blaster helps. I slso put an 07 Envoy air bag on mine for the roung GMC emblem.
I thought I was the only one who valued little details that most people would never notice much less spend any time or money making them happen! Amazing that you have 215k on the Tahoe , looks awesome
Those steering wheels come off super easy if you just hit with both hands upward from the back... so your puller literally did nothing haha. Just be sure you leave the nut on a couple threads so it doesn't come off into your face... experience talking here lol. I did the autowood grey burlwood with soft black leather wrap in my 04 build truck as the original although in a low mile truck looked like the one here and was peeling all over. I would love the Envoy airbag in my truck but being a 3/4 ton I only have a single connection on the back and not dual like the light dutys... haven't tried taking one apart to see if I can swap the bags between the outer covers.
Had the proper steering wheel tool only pull the aluminum threads right out of my mustang's wheel. I instead did just like you, pulled on it all I could and it popped off. If you leave the nut threaded on a bit you won't hit yourself in the face with the wheel.
i just found you channel but i’m glad i did. I picked up an 06 Escalade steering wheel from a junk yard and ordered an 06 Envoy Denali airbag (with the nicer denali logo) to swap into my 03 Denali XL
Hey matt, i know its an old video...but i just snagged a steering wheel from an 05 Escalade yesterday. Black with the woodgrain top and bottom. Still OEM but damn is it so much nicer. I wasnt super crazy about the feel of the grant wheel. Definitely anyone with an 03-06 GMT800, get you an Escalade wheel.
that looks sweet. Yea, you are spending some decent cash tp upgrade/update the look... but, it sure beats spending 60 plus grand on a newer model with a $700 plus per month payment. My wife may not be liking your videos come Summer......lol
The only steering wheel "upgrade" I'd want for my 06 Tahoe would be a nice, thin one like 60's and 70's cars. I buy one up in a heartbeat if they made it for this Tahoe. Not a fan of the big, fat steering wheels people seem to gravitate to.
Here’s a trick for removing a steering wheel. Take the nut off, shake the shit out of it for 30 seconds to a minute. (Really go at it). Then hit it from the back with a rubber mallet. Works every time.
Air bag safety, should wait min 5 minutes after disconnecting battery, or disconnect negative terminal then touch to positive terminal (warning) this will reset computer and all electronic systems hardwired to vehicle, well most vehicles it will.
Will this work if they don’t have the buttons in the steering wheel? Bc some tables don’t have that I was just wonder bc my Tahoe doesn’t have them and I want them and was gonna buy this new steering wheel but only if the buttons work?
Next time put the nut on and tug of it like you mean it, save yourself a bunch of fucking around. basically every one of these trucks ive ever touched the steering wheel pops off by hand.
Looks good man. Thanks for taking time to document this stuff so the jobs aren't that surprising when we, the viewers, try these things. Keep it up. Love the content.
Been watching your Tahoe videos for a while. Oddly enough, my wife has a 2004 suburban and we have recently decided that I should get a better daily driver than my 84 C10. I am thinking if getting a 2002-05 Tahoe to match her Sub. You have given lots of ideas to clean and fix one up.
I like that new Grant replacement steering wheel. How does it feel driving with that compared to the original? I'm thinking about doing that (and also a steering wheel control conversion since mine doesn't come with any) to my 06 Silverado and I wanted to get some owner's opinions before I buy it.
I had a 2006 GMC Sierra and I put a Envoy airbag similar to that one in it except it said GMC on it. I did the Trailblazer airbag swap in my 06 Suburban, I also swapped in a Yukon Denali dash bezel and gauge cluster.
the steering was already loose when you took that 21mm nut out. as you can see if they are not loose they won't move like that. you wasted a lot of time plus money on that puller...steering wheel can come out by tapping right and left on the steering wheel a few times.
I wont give you crap, as every application is different, but an application of a little M.A.N. had my wheel easily released from its home too. Great vid man. Keep it up. My '05 Suburban Z71 looks better thanks to you.
In your experience, if a vehicle didn't have the wheel switches, is there a harness connection already in the column ready for that option choice or would it be a different harness altogether?
Mr LsxMatt nice video. I recently found your pages two days ago. Excellent content. I have a 2004 tahoe and you have fixed problems that mine has. I THINK because im not a good with the car like you. My mechanics sometime do not want to bother because they cant find the exact source and although I have break down insurance they also do not want to deal with the company. I really like the truck but I live in the city and everyday is an adventure. Im thinking about letting it go for something else. I just dont want another project. Any suggestions?
When you torqued the not you over torqued it. All you are supposed to do is put pressure on the torque wrench and when is pops or as we say brakes at the torque setting it is set. If you do it again you over torqued the nut. I was an aircraft engine mechanic in the Air Force and torque settings are very important when working in them.
I always just leave the nut on a few threads and pull and shake the steering wheel till it comes off. Using the nut so you don’t smack yourself in the face when the wheel finally comes off.
My son in law works for a Chevrolet Dealership and he said 90% of the steering wheels they pull are done by removing the center nut then plant both feet on the floor and grab the sides of the steering wheel and pull hard with a rocking motion.
I like watching ur videos considering I have a suburban & get idea 💡 for mines but for this on video I'm sure u got it now but u don't need a tool just a good yank with the nut in but lose I've got mine from carid. Com yrs ago & it's a wood steering wheel they have a lot to choose from
when i pull these wheels, i thread the nut back on part way, use a hammer drill with a 1/2" socket adapter then just put the socket on the partially tightened down nut and give it a few ugga duggas with the hammer drill
