My favourite bargain brand (2nd hand) right now is... PXG, sounds weird but Gen 5 0311 driver regularly sells for around £150 on ebay, and I've just picked up a 3 wood for £92 + postage. And the driver is a super forgiving and I love the sound. I used to hate PXG and I'm quickly becoming a fangirl!
Not sure why I watch you Simon. I am fortunate to be able to afford what I want. Last years TSR3 is garbage, what am going to get this year? Its not that I am rich just frugal in every other area of my life. Still driving a 2008 Toyota Tundra. I guess if you save a a truck payment every month for 12 years, Then a new driver does not seem like that much. I do appreciate you trying to look out for people though.
I've owned 2 Honma's and 3 Tour Edge's. Got them all as a year old model for under $150 . Everyone outperformed or performed as well as my fitted Callaways and fitted TaylorMade, so much so that I only have tour edge now
Thanks Simon for being a champion for good alternatives. Just bought my daughter a new 2022 LTDx driver and new 2020 Adams Tight Lies 5 wood that are now bargains…..she loves using them!
I totally agree. I just upgraded my driver to an old, seemingly never used Ping G25 for about 130. My drives went from 220-260 to 250- 330 depending on the mustard. The ball takes off like a rocket ship 🚀. I played a round with my buddies & they all couldn't stop laughing at every drive. They could believe me, the HIGH handicapper just turned into Happy Gilmore over night.
@@yoholmes273 I bought a new Wilson Cortex driver for $150 when they failed to sell for $499. I hit it about 245-255 which is pretty good for someone in their 60s. I don't see the need to replace it.
Good suggestions! I game the TEE E722 and agree with the forgiving aspect that you mention. the centre of the club face is the least part used and most of my drives are in excess of 230 yards and near the edges of the fairway 90% of the time.
I got an absolute bargain on a new 2021 Mizuno ST--Z with a Diamana 60 stiff last year for 200 Euros. I am sure I would get 20 metres more out of a QI10 or similar, but really, on my home course there is but one hole where I could realistacally still play driver with those lengths then. The Mizuno is INCREDIBLY forgiving. Cheap drivers rock.
I have honma irons and cobra hybrids and a Mizuno driver. I bargain shopped everywhere got my irons when i turned 40 I decided I was going to golf more and buy nice clubs. Got everything for 750$ of course they were a couple years old but never used.
I bought a like new Cobra RadSpeed XB driver for $200 shortly after the release of the Cobra LTD drivers. I have no plans on changing that driver anytime soon, but when I do it, it'll be for another 2nd hand or year old model.
Any thoughts on the Honma TW-747? I'm still using an old Wilson 'Smooth' after a long spell away from golf - but have the opportunity to pick up the Honma 747 brand new, at a great price.
Drivers are such a head scratcher, old drivers before 2016 sell for like 80-100 and models after 2018 can sell as low as $100 for something that came out like 3-4 years ago
Played yonex 25 years ago My v mass irons cost me 1300 quid new then 😁 , serious build quality Only know of one club hi actually stocks them in my county now
Where do you find the moment of inertia and center of gravity stats on drivers? I can’t seem to find anything on the OEM’s site. That published from the R&A? 5:21
I bought the Honma T//World GS driver almost two years ago for US$180 from a Japanese store on the basis of your review. Still play it and can't find anything longer. Only negative is that it is loud.
Great Video Simon. I too love Honma and am gaming Honma TW747VX Irons which are just amazingly forgiving forged irons. I am very keen to try one of their drivers BUT their adjustment hosel is different to everyone else and requires a specialist tool. The wrench is the same but you need a small cylinder to adjust the head because it is spine aligned. If anyone has a hack or way around this for their drivers then I am all ears as I'd love to buy one for comparison against others drivers I own or have used.
I bought homna driver when i started playing because your video's. Loved it then my swing changed after lessons so traded it in with the matching 3 wood against the oddesy ai #1. Picked up a stealth 2 plus driver and a m4 3 wood.
Another driver I would add to this list is the PXG 0311 Gen 5 Driver (X or XF variants), can be had second hand for about £180. XF is the more forgiving model but I am finding even the X model the best I have ever had for tight dispersion, hardly losing a ball off the tee now.
This is a great video of how to get a solid club just a couple years old. I recently got a used set of Mizuno jpx ez forged irons from 2016 and love them, have you ever tried them? I'd love to know your thoughts
So as someone coming into the game and playing 1-2 times a week, what driver do you suggest as “game improving”. Anything on the market I just want something with forgiveness and everyone has a different say. But what do you suggest?
