A wood cook stove can prove to be a valuable asset to any location. In a homestead it can provide a way to preserve your bounty from the garden or cook homemade bread. For the off grid person it can provide heat and hot water as well as a way to cook. For the prepper it can save you from freezing in a grid down scenario and all the other things listed above.

About OFF GRID with DOUG and STACY:
We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

OFF GRID with DOUG & STACY I’m putting this stove on my wish list
@curtalfrey1636
@curtalfrey1636 6 лет назад
We have a pioneer princess at Alfreyfarms. Here is some good advice, don’t use more than 4 pieces of wood at a time in the stove. Especially when you already have a bed of coals in the bottom. 3 logs at night time. And always keep 2 inches of ash in the box. The fire box is bigger and it is tempting to fill it to the top with wood, don’t do it. The fire quickly becomes out of control once the wood turns to charcoal and closing the flue and damper won’t even put it out. The back of the stove will easily get 800 degrees and the wall will get to 300 degrees if it’s within 24” of the stove and rise. We have fire extinguishers and a fire hose installed just in case. I have found this out from experience. I used a Fleer thermal gun and the cooktop can reach 1100 degrees which is dangerous to say the least. You can’t take the eyes off and cook on the hole unless you have coals only in the box. Otherwise you will smoke the house out. Another “personal” experience. :)

When we use our wood cook stove for heating our place in Idaho, we always set the stove for the oven to always be heated, then we left the door open so it put out even more heat. The water tank also help in providing more heat. Our stove doesn't have a water reservoir so we have a 20-30 gal stock pot, we keep full of water, which also helps in needing hot water. LOL!

Hello Doug. I used to have a Pioneer Maid cook stove, I believe the one before the Princess. I Loved it however, it also had the metal firebricks but they had to be filled with sand prior to using. Over a period of time they split apart, I think they were just spot welded?? We ended up putting regular firebrick in there after that which worked very well. Don't get me wrong, I loved that old cook stove and sold it in the house I moved out of after my hubby passed away. A few years later the people who bought my house didn't want to heat or cook with wood anymore so I bought the stove back from them...no idea where I was going to use it but last year I purchased an off grid cabin and had intentions of installing it in there, however, my installer said the stove was way too big and that I would have problems with keeping it fired down and creosote build up. Anyway, I sadly, ended up selling it to a guy who had a huge farm house kitchen I hope he enjoys it as much as I used to. I did consider building an outdoor kitchen but at my time of life, 70 years old and living along with many health issues, I decided not to go that route and ended up just buying a small wood stove for the cabin (I am mostly only there on and off for the , spring fall and summer) I am able to heat my small cabin (under 500sq ft. including the sleeping loft) and also have a couple of pots on the stove for quick simple cooking. No oven unfortunately but am thinking maybe an adobe oven outside this summer for the small mount of oven cooking I am likely to do. Thank you for all the great information you guys pass on to us, I enjoy everyone of your videos. Blessings to you both. Sandie.

When I was a kid, we had two stoves we used only for heating in the winter and drying out our gloves on the top of the stove. There was a flat area on top. but we never used it for cooking because we had a gas stove to cook on. We had an electric refrigerator with the motor on the top, which became our cats favorite place to get away from all the petting we kids did to him. When we got our second cat, he spent most of the time outside, only coming in to use the litter box and eat. We had a large garden and some fruit trees and grape vines. We did pretty good living on four and a half acres with a large family.

I was looking at the Liberty Rocket stove. The problem with many rocket stoves is how to get the mass where you need it. It has to be fed constantly to get the mass heated. Once the mass is heated I'm assuming it will only keep a room warm. I've had wood burning stoves since I was a kid. I'm almost 60 now. Our house has an insert which is another issue when the power goes out in winter. Unless we install solar with a back up battery it's basically useless. Gas generators are a big no no because they use way too much gas to keep simple things running. So, I'm trying to convince the bride to get either the Pioneer princess or the Baker's Choice. I want the Pioneer princess because it should be able to heat the downstairs and we can just close the rooms to the upstairs. I know this comment is several years after your video, but I'll be checking on Stacy and how to cook with one of these.

@deborapettigrew1258

I bet I could have one if I built an out door kitchen/grill area kinda like a fire hut in the backyard. There’s no winter here so it would never do in the house I’d only be able to cook on it one day a year. Lol. And it would rust out in about a year so maybe not. One day if I ever move to a colder climate and have a homestead I could have one until then I live vicariously through you guys. Love the stove and love you guys for sharing.

My husband and I heat with a wood stove, have most of our marriage. We have purchased our land to get off the grid. We got space on it cleared for our cabin and large garden last weekend. I keep trying to stress to him that I need a cook stove to bake, not just a wood stove to heat and surface space to cook. We are getting ourselves ready to make this transition. It all takes money to do, so we are doing things a little at a time. I love watching your channel! You have helped us so much already on our journey.

What kind of price are we looking at with that stove installed? Also, have you tried growing, quinoa, seeds, they have all the protein, you need if you don't have meat, and is gluten free and if you grind it and bake it in the oven at 220 degrees for three hrs spread on a baking sheet 1/4 inch deep, you end up with a flour, with the same consistency as regular flour for baking! Its easy to harvest and 10 to 15 plants can give you on average 2lb of seed, and takes less space and is easier to harvest by hand than conventional grains! It is as easy to grow as pigweed, is drought resistant and only needs up to 10 inches of water in one growing season, its great in all soil conditions except solid clay!

The size numbers on your iron ware should match the eye size on the stove to be used without the cover. Dad would stack street bricks on the stove then wrap them in towels and hand them out at beadtime. Rub the sheets down to warm them and put a couple under the bed toasty warm.

My mother-in-law said that she was never sick when they had wood heat. Once they had an electric furnace installed, she would get sick. I wonder what the reason is for that. Is it that the wood heat is more natural? That her body was used to pretty extreme temperature changes with wood, but the furnace "softened" her immune system? Is the problem the electricity itself? A combination? I don't know, but that is something I think of often. We have a wood heat stove, but haven't installed it yet. We didn't plan for it, so it might take a while to get it in. Maybe by next winter. We were blessed to be given the very nice stove by my brother when he and his wife decided to get rid of it.

A wood stove would be too much for this little cabin in FL. LOL. We have a small fireplace and since half the heat goes up the chimney, it is perfect for this location. We some times get down into the teens but it is not for long. We don't split most of our logs so they don't burn thru too fast. Wood stoves don't burn thru wood as quickly as an open fireplace. But your wood cookstove looks very practical for you guys !! Warm the cabin and cook too !! And yes, take some time off for yourselves. :)

Thanks Doug for the tour and information on the stove! So happy to hear you guys will be having videos on how to cook and bake on the stove! Was just telling hubby my biggest fear was knowing how to control the temperature and cook/bake on one. I currently have a gas stove/oven which I love cooking on, but I agree with your thoughts about having one thing for multiple uses and I'm not sure my woodstove heats my house that efficiently.

How do you keep it warm when you leave? How do you keep from always smelling like smoke? Thanks.

+Bil Wilds you choke it down and leave or do the same over night .. sometimes you might get some smoke... buy overall pretty much smoke free
