The poor man´s version of the "Smart Tweezers":
www.smarttweeze...
Measurement voltage can be changed from 500mV-RMS to 100mV-RMS so that semiconductors in parallel to your component don´t turn on.
Dual display (Q-factor/Dissipation factor), 100Hz...10kHz selectable test-frequency, auto-mode or manual L/C/ESR/DC-R selection, 6000 counts, 1.5...3% accuracy
The downsides:
1.) The slotted tweezer-tips are totally crap.
You have to replace them with sharp ones.
Not easy or cheap to find!
If you have a link for cheap replacement tips please post them in the comments!
2.) Last settings (especially test-frequency & test-voltage) are not stored after power-off
3.) Auto power-off time cannot be changed.

You could reverse the direction of one or both of the bent tips in order to increase the spacing.

MS8911 looks really useful, but I thought you were going to compare results with your expensive LCR meter since you had it right there on the bench! But I do not think these are really intended for in-circuit measurement but rather for checking component identification and function during assembly. Only thing missing seems to be a higher voltage mode for diodes - 0.1v is good to definitely avoid turning junctions on, but 0.5v is not really high enough to be sure of turning them on when you want to (for example soldering an LED the right way round). Also, if they could put the hold button on the tweezer arm you could operate single-handed mitigating your left-handed difficulty! (But again, that is a little much to ask at the price.)

Well I think the most useful application for the MS8911 is really in-circuit measurement of soldered SMD components. Gripping loose SMD components even with the retrofiitted sharp tips is quite difficult as I experienced just yesterday. A 4V diode mode for LEDs would of course be a perfect addition. But what in this world is perfect? As soon as the EEVBlog 121GW multimeter with it´s high-voltage diode-mode will finally arrive, that problem is also solved (or I still find a MS8910A as a counterpart for the MS8911). Comparing the small MS8911 with it´s bulky bigger brother was not the primary scope of this video. The big one has of course superior accuracy, 100 kHz max. measurement frequency and a few more features. But the outstanding feature of the MS8911 is really the 0.1V measurement voltage which as far as I know no other SMD LCR-meter offers in this price range.

I have both of these (MS8911 and MS8910 without A in the end) as well as I have a DER EE DE-5000 LCR meter which is based on the same chipset as MS5308 but looks quite nice and also is a bang-for-buck (especially, if you''ll order it on ebay from Japan, 'cause taiwanese manufacturer sells them primarily on japanese market and very cheap; you can get it worldwide from Japan-based reseller for less than $100). DE-5000 can also easily measure component values using frequency up to 100kHz, though it seems that 120Hz isn't its native (or, maybe, not so clear sinewave - have to check it out) frequency among the others 'cause its readings of a component at this freq differ a little bit (they kinda stand aside) in comparison with the readings of the same component at 100Hz and 1kHz. Well, MS8910 can, actually, faintly lit up the UV and blue LED crystals (blinking them) ONLY in SCAN mode (and it cannot turn on the white ones because they have lower efficacy due to yellow luminophorous layer upon the semiconductor crystal; and, of course it cannot ignite the double-crystal, triple-crystal in series LED matrices and so on) Now I have to find out how to calibrate my MS8911 (though it is completely in-specs, but I want to know a way to perform, at least, "closed probes" and "open probes" calibration routines). BTW, there are a series of "smart tweezers" from a Russian manufacturer (years ago prices were $100 for earlier models; now they are also $130...250 depending on the model and options including bluetooth, Android app, Windows app and so on). They can do everything the canadian Smart Tweezers can do, and more (for example, they can show the oscillogram of a signal form in real time). Check it out, if you'd like (the site is multilingual): www.rlc-esr.ru/index.php/ru/kupit www.rlc-esr.ru/index.php/ru/?view=article&id=87:sravnenie&catid=8 (pricey, but you can expect the upgrades of firmware)

For me the most important feature of the MS8911 is the low-voltage measurement with which you can measure components in-circuit without turning on any PN-junctions. Does any other (affordable) LCR-meter in the world does have this feature?

My Mastech MS8911 arrived yesterday. I was very disappointed. It was way off when I tested some capacitors. I tried every frequency along with the rms voltage. My capacitance and $19.95 meter gave me more accurate results.

I am enjoying Roger's videos. This one is no exception. Especially, because I immediatley began online shopping for this product: ebay, alitech, etc. Roger may be ahead of the curve as I cannot buy it right now the way I normally purchase components, so I will wait for it to show up. (I could buy it through a North American distributor in California but know full well what happens to the final price when shipped to Canada from the Mighty USA; custom's fees, hidden duty taxes, exorbitant shipping costs. It's very disappointing to see the sticker price double. This is why I will wait and why I buy from the East)

Strange. Perhaps you email Mastech directly if there is a reseller/distributor in Canada: www.mastech-group.com/location.php?n=3 I got mine through elektor-magazine as mentioned in the video: www.elektormagazine.com/news/review-mastech-ms8911-smart-smd-tester Don´t know if they ship to Canada but at least they are present/shipping in all European countries.

what's the benifit of htz/khz when testing components?
@KainkaLabs

The components are tested with an AC sine-signal. The range of measurable component values and especially ESR of capacitors depends on the frequency.

@@KainkaLabs I'm sorry, but I'll ask you one more question. Is there any way to test the short key diode part in the system when you bought it with ms 8911? Normally, a multi-tester is in diode mode and a part test is about 0.5v. I don't think this model has a diode mode function. Can you test the diode value on its own, except how you can do it? Not when I test the smd chip...
@KainkaLabs
@KainkaLabs 5 лет назад
@@김수한-o2z1u This in an RLC-Meter and not a multimeter. Buy a cheap SMD-Multimeter for under $10 and you have your diode-test functionality. It makes no sense to squeeze this out of an RLC meter.

Hallo sir
@andidotro

In capacitance mode is there any way to see other parameters like ESR or it shows only D(disipation)?
@KainkaLabs
@KainkaLabs 6 лет назад
No. The secondary display value is fixed in each mode. But there are formulas to calculate the other parameters from the 2 displayed values. But to what end? The usual parasitic value you are interested in a capacitor is ESR. Of course you CANNOT easily measure the parasitic inductance of a capacitor because that in conjunction with the capacitor build a resonant circuit. That you can only measure with a totally different technique which I demonstrated with an inductor in another video.
@andidotro
@andidotro 6 лет назад
KainkaLabs I was almost ready to buy it but in this case I think I will keep working with my bench lcr. It doesn't seem to be a very flexible tool compared to the original smart tweezers.
@KainkaLabs
@KainkaLabs 6 лет назад
I think you won´t regret buying one concerning the low price as an addition to your T&M equipment. I´m pretty sure your bench LCR-meter isn´t able to measure components in-circuit and that´s a really unique feature of this one with the 0.1V test-voltage (apart from the overprized original "Smart Tweezers"). I am quite happy with the Mastech and am ATM reverse-engineering a fake Hakko 951 solder-station clone. (Will be one of the next videos when I am finished with that)
@andidotro
@andidotro 6 лет назад
Is there any sure way of detecting a failed/failing cap with this one based only on C and D parameters? P.S. I look forward to your next video
@KainkaLabs
@KainkaLabs 6 лет назад
After measuring the basic capacity (which shouldn´t be much lower than the printed value), you switch to ESR measurement mode. That is the main parameter for (electrolytic) caps especially in SMPS. A high ESR surely indicates a failed or soon to fail capacitor.
