I really like the mask from 1978, 2018, 2021 and 2022, they all have a very acceptable continuity and make sense with the story. An extra for the 1978 mask in the flashback in the 2021 movie.
So the way I made my peace with all the masks in H20 is, to imagine that it's all about dispelling the myth of Michael being the Boogey man. He looks super scary in the opening as Marian is still very much afraid of him. Laurie on the other hand is trying hard to not be afraid of Michael anymore so she sees him as less scary as the film goes on and also more & more as just a man, so you see more of his eyes, humanising him. It works for me from this pov.
I prefer the Halloween Kills mask overall. It’s just horrifying, the 78 gives me chills, but something about the Kills mask reminds you how Michael has become inhuman. Literally a scarred monster, he’s not just some dude with a halloween mask, this guy has murderous intent all over.
Which is exactly why Kills and the new movies are such a turn off. These movies were supposed to be direct sequels to the OG where Michael IS just a crazy dude with a mask lurking in the dark and methodically taking teens lives. Then all of a sudden at 60 years old after being shot, stabbed, burned, etc, we have to believe this dude can take out a whole fire battalion in 60 seconds? If I wanted inhuman Myers, I woulda watched RZ Halloween.
@@elijahcason1yeah because most people survive getting stabed in the neck then eye and getting shot 6 times in the body while falling off a balcony which would cripple most people then gets up and disappears, that was in the first movie, so these new films follow it quite well really don't they
Resurrection is probably the most underrated mask. Yes it looks too detailed but when you look it at during the fight scene against Busta Rhymes. It looks really bad ass and I compare it to the original as in how menacing it looks
I’m actually really fond of the Halloween 4 mask. Yeah it looks weird in some shots, but considering the continuity at the time with Michael being burned at the end of the second one; it makes since he needs a new mask. And the 4th films mask can be creepy in its own way, especially knowing Michael’s scarred and burnt face is under the all white mask.
My biggest problem with H4 is the actor who played Michael Myers. He just didn't have the stature or build to play him, IMO. He looked awkward and short
I honestly think one of my favorite masks is the Kills mask. Halloween Kills was the first horror movie I saw in theaters, so I have a sentimental attachment to it. Plus, it looks super cool.
Great list! For me...lowish points are - H4 "Lt. Commander Data" - H5 "Nic Cage" High points - 78 "Boogyman" (perfection) -81 H2 "Dead Has Arisen" (still super scary to me) - Kills flashback (love it) - H20 "Demented Brother" Winston (Can't help it.This one works for me). - H18+ (Pretty cool masks. Look good. Dropped a bit for me in 'Ends" after my boy got curb stomped like a retired athlete in a failed comeback. Harder to see this look as scary now. Not the masks' faults though. ) Fire someone masks: - H4 "Pink Nightmare" or "Tramer's Revenge" - Resurrection "Get Off My Lawn" - H20 "Area 51" and CGI masks. Seriously. Insta-fired to anyone who approved those.
The best thing about having a bad memory is I can always come back to these mask ranking videos of yours and watch them for the “first” time every year! Seriously love your channel, I agree with a lot of your view points, I love your respect for the originals while also being receptive of future changes, you are just so much fun to watch and have a lot of knowledge, it’s clear you’re a big horror fan
I always love the fact that these movies with budgets in the millions, some of them $10 million+, could never properly recreate the original mask from the first film which had a budget of $325,000. And I give props to Halloween 2018, they did their work and made sure that that mask looked just like the original but aged 40 years.
For the longest time I thought Halloween 2 had a different mask before finding out Dick Warlock just has a bigger head than Nick Castle. It looks so different!
A solid list. Makes you angry that so many of these movies fumbled the ball with the mask. The most important part of what makes Michael so eerie and iconic.
I don't care what anyone says, the 2007 zombie mask is the best one. And yes, above the original. The beat up grungy dirty look while looking a lot like the original I really appreciate. Plus Tyler was really intimidating so he helped sell it imo
Yeah, the CGI mask was used cause they couldn't get back to the location, which sucks. But I've always liked the H20 Stan Winston mask for some reason 🤷🏼 Also I really enjoy the way the mask looked during the opening dream sequence in Rob Zombie's Halloween II, bloody and shredded where Laurie shot him 👍
Am I the only one who likes the Rob Zombie 2 mask? That film portrays him more of a monster than a Shape if that makes sense and it fits the film really well. I personally think although it's the furthest mask from the original it is deffo the most horrifying mask and portrays Rob Zombies Michael Myers and his own character compared to John Carpenter's. Deffo not a top 3 mask but it doesn't suck
I do like the Dick Warlock stretch mask from Halloween 2 the most. I really like the original Halloween 2 a lot. I also like the Halloween 5 mask because it is so different from all the other Myers masks. The reason the neck of the Part 5 mask is worn outside the collar is because Don Shanks neck was really big, so they had to make the neck of the mask extra-large to fit him properly.
Maybe its me but I’ve always thought the resurrection mask is way better than people make it to be. Yeah its got a lot of detail, but to me that makes Michael look angry. Which makes it scary. Resurrection as a movie is very much awful though
I agree with pretty much all of your mask rankings. I own two of them(2018 and Ends). I really LOVE H20 but the masks are hard to ignore but still my 3rd favorite Halloween movie overall. As always another great video Zach!
I have a suggestion for videos like this. I think it would've been better if you showed more of the masks instead of split second clips. Longer shots of the masks instead of your face is what I mean to be specific 😂❤
I just watched ur old mask tier list last night after watching the movie tier list n was wondering when the updated one would come out n here it is let's go!!!!
I think this is a good list. But like you said having the soft spot for Halloween 5 I feel the same way about Halloween 4. Yes the mask is a little goofy but it still has the essence and the scenes in the house when they are locked in with him make it even spookier. But for me outside of the original mask Halloween 6 has the best mask. There's nothing like the scene when Paul Rudd is about to hand Michael the "baby" and you see how cool and scary as hell he looks with that mask.
I think the kills and ends mask should go above the 2nd movies mask just because the actor in Halloween 2 made it look like Michael gained weight or something. Either way, I’m almost in full agreement of your tier list. Great content!
my rationale for the change of mask from 4-5 was that in 4 Jamie was trying to make him look more goofy in a way so she would be less scared but in 5 she can’t really and her visual perception changes to the Halloween 5 mask
Everybody is gonna get mad at me but I like the 2007 Micheal myers personally. I feel like he’s so much more scary because he grunts and is more aggressive.
16:09 not sure why, but when I first saw this movie when I was little, I thought the hole on his jaw down there was actually the mouth opening and distorting on the mask. Still gives me chills when I see it even tho I know what it is now
Hey Zack You Should Honestly Do The Map Opening Scene Like You did For Scream 2 Years Ago Ik That Theres Only 1 Killer For The Opening Scene For The Other 4 Movies But Maybe You Could. See Where You Think Where The Killer Was At. Btw Love The Vids And Can't Wait For Scream 6.
I pretty much agree with your rankings. There are just a couple I would rank higher. Those are the Kills and Ends masks. For me, they would go behind the Halloween 2 mask. I really do appreciate the continuity and the portrayal of the damage that was sustained in the Blumhouse movies. Plus, it did start out resembling the original. That's just me. Not arguing with you. Just giving my thoughts on it. 🥰 I definitely agree with the "Well, that's sucky" masks. They all were so terrible. Not saying I could do any better, but I didn't get paid to recreate a mask. They did, and it's disappointing. Especially the CGI mask. I'd rather have the awful KNB mask for that second and a half.
personally, i think the weathering and damage to the 2018 mask was the perfect touch, as we are carrying on from Halloween 2 and its not like Michael's mask is going to be in the best shape {did you like my pun?} after all those years, shows us that Michael is the same and is continuing from where he was
My favorite one is the 1978 flashback mask. And I've always thought that Halloween 4 mask fit dr loomis description the best just bc it's the most blank.
I think the Stan Winston mask is pretty underrated. But I actually kinda like it. It looks pretty cool, and even though it doesn’t match “The Blackest Eyes” that Loomis was talking about, I still find it really cool.
If it wasn't so tight and the eye holes weren't too big, it would be good. I think if the whole time we didn't see his eyes and then saw a hint of them in the right lighting from Laurie's POV, it would work.
I gotta be honest to me the Halloween kills mask is the best one, better than the original, like Michael is a menace in that movie and he looks scarier with that mask because you definitely don’t see his eyes at all, he looks terrifying with that mask watching and stalking someone and it just looks cool sustaining burn damage, it also is like a Two-face thing, like one side of his mask looks normal and fine then you look at the other it’s a monster I love it, so yeah I very much love the Halloween kills mask
6's mask wasn't that bad considering some of the others. The 2018 trilogy did the best in my opinion since the first two. The first is a given. Resurrection is what I call Drag Queen mask for real.
When you really think about it, the mask SHOULD take some sort of damage over the course of the movies. So I do appreciate the Blumhouse Timeline for showing that.
I respect your ranking, nowdays not everyone does that, and while yeah I disagree with the choices made, it's fine as those are your likes, personally I enjoy more the Blumhouse masks over the rest, but that's just my take.
Tragically, after missing a much-needed close-up of Michael when he attacks Charlie in the laundry room, it was decided that a CGI mask should be placed over the KNB mask. Why this was considered a better option than just leaving in the KNB mask is something of a mystery.
The best Micheal Myers masks are the original mask, Halloween 2 mask, Halloween 6 mask, Halloween H20 mask that’s used in majority of the movie, the Rob Zombie Halloween masks, and the new DGG trilogy of masks. The worst Micheal Myers masks are the Halloween 4 mask, the Halloween 5 mask, the CGI H20 mask, and the terrible reshoot H20 mask.
Easily one of my favorite nerdy debates. I was in elementary school in the 80’s and we had H1-3 and I watched them over and over and I loved the Kirk mask so much and when H4 came out I was floored at how stupid I thought the mask looked. Even at 8 yrs old I was so hardcore that I could have an opinion on how good a Myers mask looked. The older I got and more open-minded I tried to be I was just never impressed by any of the masks in the sequels after H2. In my mind the ultimate goal of the filmmakers was, I assumed, to make the mask look as close to the original Kirk as possible. As other commenters have said, it’s bizarre that they couldn’t find anyone to make a decent replica of the Kirk mask for the post-H2 sequels. It wasn’t until Cemetery Gates released what I consider to be among the best H1/2 replicas out there. A bit pricey for the fair weather Halloween fan but absolutely worth the cost to a die-hard.
I am big on not being able to see Michael's eyes, as well. But it works in the close up shot of his eye when he kills the girl in the begining of Halloween 2 (1981). Also, someone pointed this out and now I can't unsee it. The Halloween 4 mask looks like Michael Jackson.
Everyone forgets that Michael’s mask in Rob zombie Halloween 2 wasn’t like that until the end of the movie. The mask pretty much was the dream sequence mask through the movie until that girl ripped his mask off
I think the Kills mask may be my favorite. I love it so much, then its the original, then maybe the Rob Zombie mask or the 2018 mask. H2 is not far behind either
The way I see it is that Michael’s hair is *supposed* to be slicked back. At least, to an extent. Halloween 4 took it WAY too far and it was too neat. It has to be kind of slicked back at the top, and the sides are just kinda chaos-y. You don’t want it too chaotic or it’ll look like Rob Zombie’s mask. Too slicked back, and we all know what happened in H4
You should do the BEST KILLS/Your favorite kills out of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and Scream... Could even do a "The most ironic" kill from those movies. A concept I would love for you to do.
The H:20 mask (Stan Winston mask)…to me, Michael Myers looked like a disheveled & “crazed” Laurie Strode. I don’t know if it was intentional b/c of Jamie Lee Curtis’ infamous pixie cut, but I remember thinking “was that meant to be a juxtaposition btwn the two?!” There’s something to be said about the serendipity of the original Halloween 1978 mask.
Zack, you still forgot one. What about Ben Tramer’s version of the mask? Maybe Ben survived the crash and was in the school in part 4 to get revenge on Loomis. It worked for Loomis and Michael?
Kills mask is best..inget ehat he says about the original and lack of expression, but kills is also symbolic of him being an unstoppable force, just tearing through any obstacle like a tank.
Loved this video! Would you possibly be able to add this tier list link in the description? I’ve been planning to do my own ranking vid and would love to use this template if possible
the knb mask was used for abt the entirety of halloween h20 besides the opening and then they showed the workprint of h20 to test screening audiences and they hated it and so the weinsteins requested reshoots of any scene where the mask is very visible but the crew forgot abt charlie's death scene and they didn't have the time to go back and reshoot it and the editors said they could "fix it with digital effects" and we all know how that turned out.
At first I hated resurrection mask, but now It does look great on the lightning it's basically a mix of h20 and original mask but more angrier .If it didn't have shading makeup,it's easily top 3 for me .1.haloween 1978 2.haloween 2007 it's basically the original mask but molded on Tyler mane's face. 3.h18 4.curse 5.Resurrection mask ....remaining masks are forgettable...
