I did not include the drivers who were still technically eligible to run in a later year because they did not run the minimum amount of races. Officially a driver remains eligible in a later year if they run 7 or less races, but the rules are gray now for drivers who were not running for cup points and ran many cup races like Trevor Bayne, Justin Haley, Ross Chastain
96, 10, 11, 12 also for default rookie of the year also though 10-12 might have been influenced somewhat by so many cup drivers running full time busch/xfinity that it kidn of killed the "development series" that busch was intended to be.
It’s crazy to think they’re was 9 rookies in one cup season. Now you only see 2 to 5 rookies in one season, also I think Josh Berry wins rookie of the year in 2024.
I think it’s gonna be really close between Smith, Hocevar, and Berry. I say that because I think Spire is going to be better this year, especially with Hocevar who can get a lot out of meh equipment, and the team is now affiliated with Trackhouse, and have a bunch of Gainbridge cash.

Alot of people root for JB for 2024 ROTY, But also remeber that his equipment is SHR, Lajoie who is a slightly above average driver is going to be teammates with Hocevar and Smith. Spire nearly outran SHR for most of the season last year. Feeling it's going to be Smith
severalc comments, in 92 and 90 what happens if those guys don't run. i mean moroso won pretty much by default the other guy didn't run more than a few races, and in 92 hensley wasn't even supposed to be a rookie, he replaced a guy 6 races in. and the guy that "finished second" i think barely ran above the minimum 5. also in 93 why isn't todd bodine liste4d i know he dindn't declare at beginning of year but he did i think finish ahead of jones cause jones only ended up running 6 races. also find it hilarious how many times the rookie of the year in the 70's nobody heard of past then. and in other years it's like the rookie of the year did nothing in cup (maybe other series) and the guy who finished second did better.
In 1993, Todd Bodine is not listed because he did not declare for ROTY that season. Although he finished ahead of PJ Jones in the driver’s championship standings, the rookie of the year award was based on a different, separate points system. It was not until 2018 that the rookie standings and the driver standings were changed to be the same.
In 1990 and 1992 had the winning rookie’s not run, NASCAR probably would have given to the award to whoever was 2nd in the rookie standings no matter how many races they ran. There were also different ways drivers could score rookie points back then.
@@CantingWall3286 true that's why johnson lost to newman with more wins i think at time it was best 15 finishes that counted but had bonus points for wins top 10's 5's etc. that's why also to some degree lepage lsot to irwin. irwin made all the races while lepage missed 4-8 as i recall. i get the arguement that if you're running full time if you finish better in points you deserve to be rookie of the year. i get it. but int he lower tier series where the contenders maybe running part time as a development driver, n(nemecheck, mcmurray, to name 2) the old points work best. what techincally was john hunter's rookie year i think he didn't declare because he wasn't full time, and nascar said he didn't have to. the next year he ran full time and still lost though he had better numbers year before. i think he runs for rookie of the year even on that partial schedule i think he would have won. he at one point in the season was just outside top 12 (cut off for chase) despite number of raes he missed (or may have actually been in 12th). what i don't understand is why joe didn't run him and let him compete full time instead of running to partial schedules between trucks and xfinity. i mean he just starts and parks the xfinity car in races he didn't end up running he's in the chase and then anything can happen. and he might have been champ. wonder if jh and joe look back at that and regret not doing that. also wonder if ganassi forbid it.
Technically he didn’t have one because he never declared for ROTY. In 2008, 2009, and 2010 he ran more than the maximum races to retain eligibility in a later year. When he finally went full time in 2012, he was no longer eligible.
