One of the great treats of RU-vid land is watching you go over Kino’s monthly releases, Heath. The excitement of seeing so many great titles each and every month by KL brings me great joy! Can’t wait to get my hands on Monster Squad 4K and the Columbo set!
The Emerald Forest is a gem of a movie, I have not seen it since the VHS days and is hard to find a copy that isn't priced pretty steep, until now-thank you Kino Lorber. The Aviators Wife & Boyfriends & Girldfriends are great films, again it's been a while now. Had a decent collection of Buster Keaton films at the video store that I worked at in the late 80s, amazing 17 sources were used for Our Hospitality. Thank you again for the great video!
Great new Kino update, Heath! Thanks for always doing these for us! I'm waiting for Monster Squad and Emerald Forest to ship out for some reason. I preordered on day 1 so hopefully I will hear more soon. Columbo is a must get for me, might make that my Xmas gift from the family 😂
I already preordered by copy of Columbo ! I love the box art too - it does have the 70’s tv guide / pulpy detective story feel . I love the art …. It is also ever so slightly avante garde . I appreciate all the feelings on the missing new audio commentaries but like yourself , have the dvds …… I can not wait for the 4K cleanup on the video !!!! Having a single package that has all the classic episodes in one place with a booklet and 4K remastering , is a big deal. Kino has just been hitting it out of the park . I had bought some film packages from Kino about 15-20 years ago when they were known more as a film preservation company , putting out high end dvd releases for foreign and silent film genres and eras . I had gotten the US and German horror box sets , which had so much historical / bonus features . Where the company has gone totally blows my mind . They are up there with all the top specialty labels . Just how they’ve jumped on 4K is surprising and I appreciate, as they are helping with classic film / tv preservation. I’m more of a cult person - I love horror , sci fi , suspense , fantasy , animation and martial arts . However their work on classic films has made me jump on expanding my interests a bit - with films like Manchurian Candidate , The Longest Yard , To Live and Die in LA , 3 Days of the Condor , and others - they’ve gotten me hooked on their reissues . The extras , packaging and remastering and choices / variety of films being chosen for rerelease and / or 4K is excellent. Companies like Arrow , Scream Factory , Second Sight and others , rightly get kudos - Kino (and the UK company Indicator) are my votes for most underrated and quality companies…. Consistently blowing me away . Thanks for the monthly Kino update !!! Loved the interview with Frank Tarzi !!!
What I really like about your Kino monthly update is that eventhough you get these review copies for free, you never overhype them or promote them. You just update us on what they are and say if you want it then get it.
Cheers for that. That's exactly what I try to do: give the viewer the info they need to make an informed purchase decision. I don't make any money (aside from a little ad revenue from views) either way, so I'm neutral.
As always, great video Heath! I wish I could buy everything Kino Lorber releases. I definitely plan on picking up Monster Squad at some point. Monk is a great show and I plan on picking every season at some point.
When I think of Keith I think of Columbo! Another awesome video where I was able to learn a bit more about the films and added additional releases to my KL wish list for the next sale
Monster Squad - big difference between the covers is that Phoebe the Feb finally gets her rightful place in the Squad photo on the cover. Can’t wait to dig into the docs and features on it as well. Love Kino and love these monthly vids. Thank you Heath!
Nice update Heath. You made me laugh when you said your Mom liked Monk. My Mom is the same way. I had bought her the complete series on DVD a few years back. I would buy her the bluray but she wouldn't care about the quality difference! 😂
Good to hear about your enthusiasm for Kino’s Columbo release! I have Universal’s 2018 DVD release - which includes all seven seasons, 24 TV movies, and a few bonus features, including three episodes of the (nearly unwatchable, IMO) Mrs Columbo spin-off. Just started watching Season 5 and am loving it!
From the description of the type of movies you want to see, Eric Rohmer's films should be right up your alley. They are grown up stories about life, love and human feats and foibles.
Thanks so much once again Heath. I bought the Imprint Carpetbaggers but I love that movie so double dipped straight away with the KL version upon you saying it's from a new 4K scan.
Columbo is one of my favorite shows. This new release looks fantastic and will definitely be on my list to buy. I've seen a few episodes of MONK, but it was not my type of show. Thanks again Heath for another great video!
Haven't watched your video yet, but i can't wait to get that Columbo set. I know they dropped some extras (from your last interview with the guy), but i don't know what exactly. I don't really mind the extras, i just want a good restoration
Heath, I’m curious if you’ve heard anything about the French release of the Complete Series Blu-ray boxset set to be released on Dec. 5th on Amazon France. I’d like to know if the French release is the same restoration as the Kino Lorber one or if it’s a completely different restoration altogether. It also looks like the French release will include some bonus features exclusive to their boxset.
15:50 LOL…you say you live (or grew up) in the deep south…but can’t remember Spanish moss? Just joking, I just “discovered” KL, as I just made a big haul at the Criterion sale (and saw KL mentioned, along with Arrow, in the research videos I watched. I have the Colombo DVD set, and I love the show. Looks like upgrade time. Just a note about what I found on the KL website (I picked up 14 discs). If Criterion is Broadway, part of the KL collection could be off-Broadway…but then, there are a lot of surprising gems. I upgraded to the 4K of Marathon Man, for instance. Since I’m sure you have knowledgeable viewers, I’d like to know if the old movie Sleuth (Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine) is available in a good reissue? Thanks!
Gilligan's Island, The Brady Bunch, The Man From Uncle, Adam-12, The Munsters, The Addams Family, Dragnet, Mannix, Hawaii Five-0, Route 66, The Fugitive, I Spy, Get Smart, The Saint, Dennis The Menace, That Girl, F Troop, The Dukes of Hazzard, to name just a few.
I'm going to need to check out Salvation (1987) because it sounds interesting. First, I'm going to give Homicide Hills a try. I had never heard of either previously.
Bought Kino Lorber Freddie Francis 1966 movie the Psychopath on blu ray. I also have the dvd and reckon it looks better than the blu ray. Love Amicus movies.
Ha! I love being able to answer questions. It's the gatekeeping, attacks, and the things I've repeated 100 times that I feel are falling on deaf ears that tend to irritate me. Legit questions are always welcome.
Frank Tarzi has addressed this in the last two interviews. If the Blu-ray sells well, we will see it Blu-ray, but it will probably be at least 2 years. Blu-ray is ALWAYS a test market for a potential 4K. It's the canary in the coal mine.
@@CerealAtMidnight Right! Frank T and Kino won’t release it on 4k anytime soon, if ever. Your interview with him was great. I learned a ton about those decisions made between blu ray and 4k. It’s not as simple as so many people think.
Thanks Heath! I hope you enjoyed your holiday weekend! Columbo is awesome! I’m still waiting on my order. Two days in the Valley and Emerald Forest, are both on my list to purchase. Emerald Forest has been so hard to find for a long time, now, how about Excalibur?! I’ve been watching my DVD version for 20 years:)
I have a very important question. As a fellow physical media collector, I need your opinion on something. I just received the season one of Monk on Blu-ray in the mail and the cover artwork is in a really bad condition. The spine is slashed. the back is dented. The front is smashed in several places and it has some gunk on it that I can’t identify. My mom thinks I’m over reacting but I am thinking about returning it to get a new copy. What do you think?
@@CerealAtMidnight yeah after sending this and talking to a couple friends I ended up deciding to go ahead and do the return. My replacement should be here next week. Sadly both of my Mandalorian seasons on 4K also showed up damaged but not bad enough for me to want to go through the hassle of returning those as well
