@RetroComparisons Years? Holy crap. I picture you hiding away in a man cave working on this with no outside contact for years growing a massive beard. Welcome back to society, lol.
NINE HOURS of comparisons! You absolute madman! :D I know it's an aggregate project, but still, compiling in a single video what for all practical purposes is a definitive encyclopedia of gaming's greatest "console war" rivalry is still a pretty wild achievement. All the kudos! (On a different note, interesting to finally hear your voice! Thanks for stepping out from behind the curtain for the intro.)
Thanks so much my friend!! I know you say madman in a joking way but putting this together nearly drove me mad lol! Thanks for your continued support through the years and for your smart, insightful comments on the videos. I always love hearing what you have to say:) Oh and I just saw your part about the intro, I somehow missed that. Thanks buddy, I'm a little self-conscious about my voice so hopefully it's ok enough for the video.
Holy Cow!! This is truly amazing (and bonkers) in it's scale. Hopefully this video will help newcomers appreciate all the hard work and dedication you've put into these comparison projects!! Big thanks as always.
Whew, such a big undertaking, Bill! Glad to hear your voice once again too. I'll have to save this for reference. I think at the end of the day, like we've seen time and again: the true winners were the gamers. Whether you had a Nintendo console or handheld or Sega console or Game Gear or Nomad, there was always good games for either.
Thanks so much my friend! This is definitely more of a reference video rather than a sit and watch type of thing for sure. I totally agree, with such amazing consoles and handhelds you were a winner if you owned anything by these companies. Well maybe not the Virtual Boy or the Sega Pico lol by I digress.
Wario and Jack Bros alone justify the Virtual Boy. Plus, it plays great in real VR. Anyways, congratulations! You went the extra mile...then several hundred thousand more... and it put you on the map. I can't think of anyone more deserving... Or anyone more deserving of that break you owe yourself.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 Thanks so much buddy, you are too kind! Haha to be fair I've never owned a Pico or VB though I always wanted to get the latter especially now that there's flash carts available. The Pico not so much.
Thanks so much! I think everything from Part 1 has its own video but the rest could probably be done separately down the road if I add a little more to each of those sections.
The only time I ever really noticed it was stuff like War Zone where it was midi themes whereas my friend had the PS1 version and had all of the actual wrestler themes which made me jealous.
12:07 Aladdin NES vs Master System. At first I thought they put the wrong game thinking it was the SNES version. But I double check and it is the master system!!!
Goddam! I never thought this was posible to be even longer...😬 Heck, even if the catalog includes underated games. Otherwhise, i liked how includes newer hardware for completion's sake...
It was a bit surprising to see the Game Gear perform better than the GBC, considering it was technically the older portable console. But the games ran much smoother on it.
Oh wow you talk?! 😅Sorry I just never heard you speak. You have a nice speaking voice. Good asmr. You never upload games this late or early haha 😅 Also This must be one of your longest vids. Cool comparisons. Some are closer where others are alot different depending on the game. GREAT JOB!
Thanks so much buddy! I'm a little self-conscious about my voice so I really appreciate you saying that. Haha yeah this is probably going to be the longest video I ever do, this one nearly destroyed my brain. Thanks as always for the continued support and being as awesome as you are:)
@@RetroComparisons Thanks dude! You're welcome, awe that's ok man. Yeah I hear ya some folks are like that getting on camera too or speaking etc. I hear ya I used to be like that at first when I first started my channel and even now I still sometimes get comments on my voice(it's very deep) so I tend to get trolls from time to time asking if I'm using a voice mask or modifying it etc lol. Of course dude yeah I can only imagine a vid for 9+ hours of editing being a grueling experience. I've uploaded I think a vid roughly an hour plus that I had to edit which took me a while I don't even want to picture 9 hours lol. Great job again! Maybe next time your an do 10 hours! I'm kidding haha 😂
@@MKF30 Some people are needlessly cruel. I've heard your voice and think it's freaking awesome to the point that you could be a professional voice actor. Haha yeah anything over an hour for a video gets brutal for the editing. Maybe some day I'll shoot for that 10 hour mark lol!
@@RetroComparisons I agree man. Oh wow you checked out my channel? Lol 😆 thanks dude appreciate that! I'm about to reach 4k subs yay lol I know it's not much but I'm happy with that much and just use it for fun, reviews, voice vids, asmr, gameplay and reactions so ita mixed. Lol 😆 yeah I've had some people over time also say they are afraid of my voice they think I sound like Jigsaw or something😅😏 Thanks dude ita funny you should say that I've actually done some VA work on here for a friend who's got a big channel. He and I used to game together during the Xbox original and 360 days. We made some sillier stuff at first but then he got bigger and we did some more original stuff. I think he has over 7 mill subs currently but we keep in touch. We may have something cooking but not sure yet. Thats pretty much my dream job haha Hey also before I forget so I've been seeking a good software program either free or affordable that's good for making compilation videos where I can just smack like fifteen 30 second vids into one vid for combo videos. Do you by any chance know anything good that you can recommend? I'm a total noob with it. I tried something called canva but it shrunk the video window cheating a trim which I didn't like or know it would do lol.
@@MKF30 Oh yeah I've checked your channel out a bunch of times but I feel bad because I'm so backed up on youtube videos that I haven't watched in a while along with a bunch of other creators that I have like 50 videos to watch. With this video finally done it should thankfully free up some time to catch up. Hey nothing wrong with 4k subs, that's freaking awesome! Lmao, I mean Jigsaw's voice is creepy but yours is deep and smooth, not scary like his haha. That's so cool that you did stuff previously with voice work. That would be great if you got to do that full time, I think you'd be fantastic at it. So for editing software I use a super cheap one and I should probably upgrade at this point but it still gets the job done. It's NCH Videopad Editor and it's very inexpensive, plus if you look around you can find some "free" codes if ya know what I mean;)
Retro Comparisons, can you do a video called "All Games: PlayStation 2 vs Nintendo GameCube"? This said video above can have differences on PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube games such as BMX XXX, Revenge of the Flying Dutchman, and Muppets Party Cruise.
That's something I'll probably tackle years from now but that one will be a very time consuming video to make. I'd love to do that one of these days though. I'd also like to do that with the Xbox.
I'll have to check out the footage on both of those. I avoided doing duplicate games unless they were part of the same generation during several generations so if I'm not mistaken Battleship was only featured in the Game Boy vs Game Gear section.
Compared to NES vs SMS, I think SMS is much more hi def and cleaner than the nes as far as the graphics. However, the Nes does beat the SMS with games with the NES Iconic Characters debut. As for sound wise, SMS does make the sound more better than the NES even though SMS sound quality is really low (refer to some of the songs in the Sonic games). Either way I think they are both great consoles. I like how this video shows more which style you preferred? Which I know there are tons of other channels that does this type of thing (Console Wars). Shame games now days when they appeared on multi consoles the only difference is either how smooth the graphics is or which easter egg featured added? Back then they show more class. If you gotten both it's like playing a game in a different universe with the same goal. Like I said, We are now up to the point where games on different consoles won't be able to tell the difference. This video proofs it. GG on the effort you put into it.
I agree, the SMS really destroyed the NES visually thanks to the extra 2 years it got in development. Plus the native RGB output really makes the output look really clean when upscaled on modern TVs. I do really love how back in the day you'd get multiple experiences out of the same game. I used to be the Genesis kid while some of my friends had the SNES and even if we owned the same game it was something unique when going over each other's houses. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to share your thoughts on this:)
@@RetroComparisons Right. I was raised by the NES and Snes until I experience the Genesis at my Uncle's house with Sonic 1 and 2. Back then Sonic was mind blowing even when Arcades back then was spot on way more better. If I had to pick which console to choose out of that 16 era? I would 100 percent recommend Neo Geo as not only the graphics looked way better, but also the music had more detailed then the SNES. Sadly the Geo didn't get the same treatment of getting games like the Sega and NES did. From what I heard NES had contracts to make sure SEGA or any other companies don't be better than them. Reminds me how Microsoft doing it now and from what I heard alot of companies are shutting down. Heck even Atari took over Intellivision recently. Shame we didn't get a combined of both sega and nes into one console. like combining the SMS Double Dragon with NES music or NES Ninja Gaiden with SMS Music. However NES had to be the bully and made sure the SMS had to quickly die off.
@@Solidier1 Nintendo's policies back then were pretty awful and they had a monopoly over the market for a while which is a huge shame. Sega still had a ton of great games for their consoles regardless especially considering their great library of arcade games. The Neo Geo AES was a beast of a console and I do wish that it had more than fighters and shmups. I know there were some other games like beat em ups and puzzle games too but it just didn't have the variety or the licensing from 3rd parties that would have helped it compete. Of course the price tag didn't help. Ugh yeah with all of this stuff going on now with acquisitions and companies getting shut down it's really bad for the industry.
@@RetroComparisons exactly. I would love to have a neo geo growing up. I played some AES recently and my gawd there I just wish there was some RPGs to play on it. Heck I was surprised by the thousands of RPGs that were released on NES that the US never gotten. As the way I put it. NES is known for 2d side scroller, SNES is a RPG console, SEGA 100 percent with the sports games. I counted maybe 750 sports games out of the whole library, NEO was best for fighting games, SMS was best for 2d side scroller as well, 3DO is a P*rn console even though it does got great games, there was another console like that which was a japanese computer forgot the name, and there's is a lot i'm leaving out.
Being a fellow 90s Sega fan boy I can't disagree but I will say that from doing this channel and this video specifically I have a newfound respect for Nintendo.
It seem that the genesis games play faster and smoother but the snes has more colors. But without being color corrected, blacks look like greys. Contrast is better on genesis
The shooters and sports games with 10-20 characters can sometimes play fast and furious on SNES but other times be a slog compared to Genesis/MD. Kind of reminds me how 3D games on Saturn can sometimes look as good as the best on PS1/N64 but other times be a mess.
Comparing the fighting game ports is wild for SNES/Genesis. Just when you're ready to claim the SNES ports have better colors and bigger sprites you see a few where the Genesis has better sprites and somehow better color even though it should not. It's crazy how well the Genesis does some mid 90s Neo Geo ports for '88 hardware with limited colors.
The Genesis really was a beast considering the year it came out. In case you're interested, I did a whole video recently where I compared every arcade port that came out on the Genesis and it was pretty eye opening seeing how well it was able to handle the majority of games.
I'm not sure of the technical abilities but I think the SG-1000 is slightly more advanced than the Colecovision & Atari 5200 but not as powerful as the Famicom. The video game crash really sucked for the Colecovision in particular because it had only been out for a year before that happened.
The difference between Nes and SMS on Renegade! Abismal! The SMS looks like a 16bit! Sega just screwed both SMS and the Genesis with the sound. Should have Sega used the FM chip more on SMS in the US, would have clicked more with people. And the Genesis only needed one more channel for sampling and/or clear voices. Also wonders why Sega went with a seldom color pallette on the Genesis. Some SMS games even look more colorful than the Genesis. Even the TG16 has more colors and was before or almost the same time as the Genesis. What could have been.
So many of the SMS ports blew me away but yeah the sound was its weak point. Still miles ahead of fellow 3rd gen console the Atari 7800 but it left a lot to be desired. Sega was so frustrating with all of the could and should haves but I still love them anyways.
As far as the games that looked better on the master system than the nes goes. Most of the ones that were the same that looked better on master system came out a lot later than and had been out on nes for years. They had came out on nes while the sg1000 was out then the master system came out and released games that nes had been had for years. But the same thing goes with nes vs sg1000 also in Sega favor.
The Master System visuals were even better than I expected. It's like the missing link between the NES and the PC Engine, which I guess makes sense when seeing when each of those consoles came out.
Almost none of the Saturn's top 50 games are on N64 and vice versa. Just incredibly different systems. Saturn's library is actually 100s bigger than N64.
@@RetroComparisons The N64 was using low res mode vs the Saturn's high res mode. Hence I said N64 suffers from low resolution, not the Saturn. That was just from that section though.
@@Miguel-Thleomuy Ah gotcha. I thought it was a joke as some people will point out something like Pong as saying it doesn't get any better than that lol!
Wolfenstein 3D didn't get a Genesis release though I would have loved to have seen if it would have been pulled off the same way as Duke Nukem 3D. Chase HQ 2 never got a SNES port though the SNES did get Super Chase HQ.
@@GAZZ707 I don't own it unfortunately and I'm not sure if there's any cabinets around my area. I was researching that to see if anyone had it to no avail.
That could potentially be a project down the road though to be honest the later console generations don't interest me as much in side by side comparisons because the differences are much more subtle.
