It's so surreal seeing Sega games on a Nintendo console before SA2, considering how hard they went at each other in the 90's.

Yeah, it was weird back then, too.

Thanks for the great video. Afterburner for the NES is really impressing. My all time favorite Puyopuyo game is "Puyopuyo Sun". Love the happy Carribean music and the happy theme. 🌞

I love most of the Puyo games. I think Puyo Pop Fever is probably my favorite just going by the time I've spent on it over the years.

I tried out Sayuki world and got pretty far since I was so familiar with wonder boy, it seemed a lot easier with how much money you get. I also didn't mind altered beast for nes over all.

I loved the NES version of Shinobi as a kid. I played it constantly when I was like five I didn’t know any other version existed it was the 90’s before the internet was commonplace

For me, as I said in the video, the biggest problem is just how much its cut down from the SMS version that it was based on. Most of the levels are way smaller, its missing stuff, has a bunch of glitches and more. If you like it, that's cool, I'm not trying to change your mind. But I do think most Shinobi fans who played it first in the arcade or on the SMS would really feel let down by this version.

Shinobi was my favorite arcade game when I was a kid, I wanted to cry about 5 seconds into the NES version when I rented it one fateful day.

I just think I enjoyed it as a child is because it was the only version I had access to but thankfully in 94 or 95 I got a Sega Genesis with 6-Pack which included Revenge of Shinobi and needless to say that old cartage was never touched again

@@InglebardGaming I didnt know it was sega exclusive back then and as a pre teen I loved afterburner, top gun, etc. Even played a similar game on atari for countless hours back in the day.

Afterburner is worse on SMS!?!? Will have to go back to play that one! I used to like it back in 89. Always thought that Sega should have made the characters on SMS Altered Beast as small as the rest of the enemies for better frame rate… also just match! Maybe they could have squeezed level 3 there with the savings!
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 года назад
Yeah, Afterburner is definitely worse on SMS. I thought it was kinda bad when I got it in I think 1988, the controls, collision, and unfair enemy targeting make it nigh unplayable after about 6 or 7 levels in, IMO. As for Altered Beast... I dunno who had the better approach. Definitely a tough game to do on 8-bit hardware.

Fantastic video as usual...very impressive the AFTER BURNER port...yes the japanese one, of course
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 года назад
Thanks, glad you liked it! Yeah, Afterburner is shockingly decent on the system, I was pretty surprised the first time I saw it. Back in the day, I didn't realize the Japanese version was different, so it was a nice surprise when I discovered that (many, many years ago now).

I love this series. Honestly, questionable ports - with a few surprises that have no right being this good - could describe Sega's legacy on any platform. Especially a 2d focused one. I'd agree with nearly all your calls, except for Altered Beast. Those Famicom graphics are so bad they pick up a bit of charm, in the same way as Ghouls N' Ghosts on C64. I much prefer the novelty of miniatures over completely sacrificing the gameplay. Besides, the graphics really improve once you escape that first level. Especially in the new stages. Meanwhile, the Master System....let's just say that if we were only ranking Sega games with a broken frame rate and poor controls, it would still be near the bottom of my list. This one should have been an easy win for them; even characters the size of Black Belt/Fist of the Northstar would have justified an 8-bit port. I expect this kind of work from Tiertex, not a top tier Japanese developer.

Thanks, glad you like it! For Altered Beast, it's a tough call for me. I really don't like the teeny little NES version even though its smoother. I bet they could coax out something similar on a colecovision. I don't hate it, I don't think its bad, but like I said, just very flawed, but appreciate the extra stuff even if I didn't really find those new levels and beast forms all that compelling myself. On the SMS, sure the framerate is garbage, no argument there! It's not a good game, either, but for completely different reasons, like missing a level, only needing two orbs to power up, and being super choppy. But the detail is way, way better than the NES version and at least in still shots it LOOKS like altered beast, it has decent FM sound and the gameplay is mostly OK if you adjust to the speed/choppiness. So for me, 8-bit Altered Beast is kind of a push, they both have issues. At least it's kinda cool seeing the VERY different approaches the devs took.

This is like how Minecraft despite being own by Microsoft is playable on other game consoles.

Mojang/Microsoft made the versions for other consoles though. These games by Sega were made by other companies (Sunsoft, Takara etc) who licensed those games. That means those companies went to Sega and said 'We'll pay you to let us make a version of your game for Nintendo's console and then we will keep all the money that the game makes after that'.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 месяца назад
@breakfasthole3851 Yes, you're right, but the general concept of just playing one company's first party game on a competing system is the same, so I think at minimum the spirit of the original comment is still right.
@breakfasthole3851
@breakfasthole3851 2 месяца назад
@@InglebardGaming Sure (btw, I'm not here to argue lol). Games can appear on different formats for different business reasons. There's the third scenario too, where they approach an outsider to make their game for a different format (often how Sega does business now). Sega pay a developer to make this version but then Sega keeps the money from the game sales. It also means that Sega will make decisions in the development process, unlike these NES games. This is because they are now more concerned about a bad version of their game getting released, which makes Sega look bad.

Also the japanese version of the nes version is missing the battle mode that the european version (It never released in north amercia) had and also it is a sequel to block blast which was a commodore 64 game and the famicom/japanaese version is based on the amiga version.

While I played and love the SMS when I was a kid, I can honestly say that if the developers knew what and how to do it, and also had the time to achieve it, they could've made so much more with the NES ports, to the point that sometimes these releases seem like a hidden joke, much like those pissed off Disney employees inserting improper content into their movies. There are exclusive NES games similar to Space Harrier that are really smooth and more interesting, at the same time, some games such as Outrun, a first party Sega game is so choppy on the SMS, comparing it to the Road Rash on the same system is almost like the latter is in a different hardware, RR isn't fast, but technically it's doing so much more. To be honest, even the Genesis version of Outrun doesn't feel they gave their all, even the colors are off. Fans have been restoring and improving arcade ports across lots of systems, Mortal Kombat on the Genesis with much more content, more graphical details, voices, the list is huge, it just goes to say that we rarely received what should have been, but the prices were always up there.

Well I never! Must confess to be entirely ignorant to the existence of these ports (apart from Alien Syndrome which I only discovered on your channel earlier). My biased brain tells me the Master System blows away these conversions, but I am impressed with the detail in the Afterburner port. Shinobi does look awful though as does the Wonderboy 2 port, both games look superior on the good ol SMS.
@InglebardGaming
@InglebardGaming 2 года назад
Ha, well, a few of these are, in my opinion, WAY better on NES than SMS, which pains me to say! I don't know WHAT Sega was thinking with the weird, buggy SMS version of Alien Syndrome. And SMS Afterburner, well, it's just not good. It's still better than some of the computer versions, but overall its not a good game and the NES/FC versions are much better. Most of the other stuff I'd say is either pretty close or an SMS win. You can tell how I felt about NES Shinobi, lol.

@@InglebardGaming Rose tinted memories one Christmas when my older brother was lucky enough to get the SMS along with Afterburner, Blackbelt and Choplifter. By the end of the holiday I think I preferred the snail game over Afterburner! It still looks nicer to me than the NES, but I've never played it to be fair so I'll bow to your superior knowledge and admit defeat😅
