CORRECTION: I'm correcting a thing I said, because it makes the whole thing more reasonable. When Marty goes back to 1985 at the end of BTTF, I think it's easier to believe that the other Marty he sees in the Delorean is actually himself, and that in that precise moment there are still his previous parents at home. The parents change into the "cooler" ones during the night. Otherwise it would become difficult to explain what will happen to the second Marty once he goes back to 1955.
Doc will know he wasn't killed by Mad Dog because the grave stone would have vanished as soon as Marty went to 1885. After leaving the drive-in, he could have driven over to Boot Hill Cemetery next to the Delgado Mine and seen for himself. Or maybe he wouldn't because it's not good to know too much about your future. Or maybe he would because there's nothing wrong with knowing about the past. Especially your future past. Wait, what?
If Doc never invented the time machine, there's a likelihood that Marty would have been a rock star. He never would have had a truck to crash and break his hand. Doc is really evil.
This is all good, but that Marty that grew up with the cool parents goes back into a past in which his parents got together because of a guy they called Calvin Klein. How does that play out? There would be two different Martys with different pasts, one past caused by the other Marty. Always drove me crazy.
That's the stuff I'm most confused about too. We could think that when Marty goes back to 1985, the present is still changing. We see the Lone Pine Mall sign, but maybe everything else is still the same as the original 1985, so the "other" Marty is actually him, and during that evening the parents have not changed yet. On the other hand, the Lone Pine Mall sign should indicate that 1985 has actually already changed, so...
what about the time line where marty is killed at the end of the tunnel in the car chase scene. marty gets run over by biff how else would doc know to show up at the end of the tunnels with the flag filled rope line that he drops down to save marty before he is run over by biff??
