Every Single Wand Wood Type (ALL 38) - Harry Potter Wandlore Explained

Welcome to Harry Potter Theory. Today, we’re discussing Ollivander and the wands of the wizarding world. Now, if you’re a fan of the wizarding world then you’ll know that witches/wizards hold one particular instrument very true to their hearts: the wand.
“A wand is the object through which a witch or wizard channels his or her magic. It is made from wood and has a magical substance at its core. Wands made by Ollivander are of varying woods, lengths and flexibilities.”
As shown above- wands come in a variety of shapes, colours, sizes, flexibilities and materials. The main parameters that differentiate each wand are as follows: length, core type, and lastly- wood type, which is the focus of this video.
Length generally pertains to the size and/or character of the witch/wizard, and similar to the length of the wand, the type of wood and core are also generally considered to be extensions of the witch or wizards personality. One thing worth mentioning, however, is that the wand component with the highest variability is the wand ‘wood’- of which there are 38 different types. Ollivander discusses WHICH trees can produce wood for wands here:
"Only a minority of trees can produce wand quality wood (just as a minority of humans can produce magic). It takes years of experience to tell which ones have the gift, although the job is made easier if Bowtruckles are found nesting in the leaves, as they never inhabit mundane trees."
We know that Harry is ultimately given an 11” wand made of Holly, and we know that Tom Riddle had a 13 ½” wand made of yew- we even know the wand wood materials of many other characters. But in today’s video, I want to discuss EVERY wand wood in existence- that is, every wood material that could potentially be used to make a wand. A lot of information pertaining to wands is best described by Ollivander himself, so I’m going to be using his own explanations.
There are a LOT to get through, so let’s get started.

"You will never fool the cedar carrier" Slughorn: *is fooled by Tom Riddle into discussing horcruxes*
@jamesrx4514

No no no. Tom riddle didn’t fool slughorn. That’s why he instantly felt guilt and he changed his own memory of it. Slughorn fooled himself into believing Tom was merely curious.
@GCJACK83
@GCJACK83 2 года назад
Slughorn wasn't fooled. He was flattered. Buttered up by classic brown-nosing. He saw in Riddle a young, intelligent, inquisitive man and felt there was no harm in sharing what he knew. However, when he realized why Riddle had asked after Riddle started his mass murder spree, he wound up fooling himself because he couldn't live with the crushing guilt he felt otherwise. I'd also bet he felt this way because a lot of his other students got killed by Riddle also. On top of other good witches and wizards he knew.

Interesting that there's no magnolia wands. Magnolias are known in the south to be strong and very long lived trees. Not uncommon to see them live for a century or more if well cared for. Maybe Ollivander can't get his hands on magnolia wood since they don't really grow in Europe.

@@mavendorf121 I have been curious about my own wand and have recently been looking up information on wand lore. The average wand is about 10 to 13 inches. Exceptionally short wands (8 inches or less) tend to go to people who have something lacking in their personality, have low self-esteem, or are denying some aspect of their true self. If you ever want to build upon this, could you make a video on the wand woods of the Druidic calendar, sold by the Hogsmeade branch of the Ollivander store? There is lore around each of those as well, and several wizards in the books carry wands of those woods such as Dolores and a former headmistress who both carried Birch wands.

Even if there are no known canon owners of red oak wands, one would have to imagine that plenty of Ilvermorny students over the years had that type of wand. This is yet another reason why J.K. Rowling needs to develop more time towards introducing characters who are either students of or graduates from Ilvermorny.

Way back in time, potternore gave me an elmwood wand, which I'm ok with, but never quite connected to as it was only digital. Then a few years later I was at a medieval/fantasy fair and there was a wandmaker tent, so obviously I had to get one. The wand that chose me there was walnut, given by a tree that is alive and feeds a lot of people. The description is quite flattering, although I'm not sure how to feel about sharing wand materials with Bella.
