Downtown Miami has been a pit for decades. When I was a child in the late 50s and early 60s, our mothers would take us downtown for a speaicl treat to eat in the restaurant at Burdines. Women dressed up and wore short white daytime gloves to go downtown. It was lovely. The Freedom Tower was the tallest building there. I love the way the skyline has developed (I am a city girl at heart), but the businesses in most of the blocks around Flagler have been trash for decades. Full of counterfeit and cheap junk. Miami's downtown has so much potential to be a walkable, wonderful place. We have the Metrorail, Metromover and Brightline to get people to downtown and around it, and parking garages (which the city needs to set lower rates for). Yes, there aren't any parking garages on N. Miami Avenue where you are pointing, but there isn't any publicly available parking in much of lower and central Manhattan either and it is thriving there because there is a subway and bus system that goes everywhere. The Miami WorldCenter under construction across from the arena is a great step, and Brickell City Centre was a great addition. Then you have Bayside right on the water. And the amazing park that's coming for the currently fenced-off areas under 395 when they finish raising the roadways and putting in that fountain/spider (take your pick) sculpture over the roadway. The Seybold Building with its jewelers is a world-reknowned treasure that needs to be highlighted. This is a hub of reputable, GOOD jewelers, not the cheap/fake/counterfeit junk that was in those street level shops around downtown. If we could connect places like that with a mix of high end and affordable shops and restaurants on the ground floor of the buildings, it would attract good tenants for offices and apartments on the floors above. We need to crack down on all of the crap that's on the street level, enforce laws and get rid of the criminals and vagrants. A lot of the business that are closed are the crap ones they finally got the tenants out of, which makes them available to better businesses that cleaning up the place will attract. There are lots of apartments that have been built and more coming in, but we need to add ones that are more affordable. Thriving business on the street level and people living in great spaces above. The large closed building you're saying should be converted to a homeless shelter because people are sleeping in front of it should NOT be converted to a homeless shelter. To do that would void all of the good that could be done with downtown. Camillus House built a very BIG new facility a few years ago on the other side of 95, and that's where the homeless should be given free rides to. The world would fall in love with this city if it's done right.
This is happening all over the US. Some of it is caused by smash & take incidents, another is the new trend in shopping. People rather shop online for the convenience they don't want to hassle with the driving, street parking, standing in line, paying to park, fear of having an accident, robbed, etc.
Also 2 much crime in the big cities. Look at all the homeless people, look at how filthy! No one wants to see that, smell that, or be around those types. Biden let in all the undesirables!!!!!! Open borders cause this
We can't blame the flash mobs for this, the ones who ramsack the stores with a whole team cuz this has been going for years these types of thefts and it never shut down stores so let's not go their, cuz it's within Who teally hurt the store cuz they the ones tht steal the cash and they not doing inventory rite so lets think before we blame anybody at all.
What? This has been the case since the 80s. Since textiles went to Eastern Europe. And developers just kept hold of properties and did not fix them up or extend leases. They are seeing the big bucks to come. Like they did with Wynwood that got gentrified.
It’s like this everywhere, whether Republican or Democrat. It never bounced back after Covid. Nevermind the fact that Republicans are averse to investing in America.

Downtown was never alive lol ... at least not since the 70's. Miami's downtown is a place few ever went to except for the Courthouse or the Sears and Burdines that only people who lived near it went to. There was never anything after 5pm in Downtown and people didn't live there, it was all government buildings and jewelry shops. You're remembering a reality that never existed.

My dad used to work in Downtown Miami from 1988-2000 in the AT&T central office building. They called it the Grande office back then. It used to be a bustling center of commerce in the 80s. The politicians and developers have ruined this city now and it appears the crooked leaders in that town have no vision other than to increase rent and force everyone into homelessness. So many beautiful historic buildings have graffiti on them. Unbelievable. Thanks for showing.

Not long ago, Ron DeSantis was in San Francisco basically making fun of the sad street conditions of their Tenderloin neighborhood and how many businesses have left downtown San Fran. Meanwhile, he has the same exact problems in one of his major cities.

Hi folks, don’t usually comment but will on this one. So Miami has seen EXPLOSIVE growth the last decade or so. Brickell (touching downtown) has full occupancy at its new mega mall. Downtown (in this video) is going through a full transformation now that we have the Brightline train and a new massive commercial center going in. There are large swaths of downtown that are being rebuilt or demolished and rebuilt which is why it looks so dead. Miami’s core, as a whole, is more vibrant than ever. Everyone’s mother, brother, and uncle has moved here or is planning to in the next 5 years. :)
Downtown has been like this my whole life… check out my videos on Brownsville and Liberty city…. Nothing is booming over there… projects completed abandoned and boarded for years
@@ragomonkey true. I think there’s a decent case that those are way different neighborhoods. If you go to bayshore there are a ton of new developments. Edgewater. Near Brightline. Worldcenter. Still plenty of nightlife and thriving buisness in Miami but not like it was 5 or 6 years ago with trump in office the mayor is doing a pretty awesome job trying to rebuild these run down areas and keeping the original Miami feel to the new construction they are doing out there
My understanding is that billionaire Moishe Mana took control of much of downtown Miami and is not renewing leases. These buildings will be torn down and replaced with highrise buildings.
Yes it is Moishe Mana who owns a lot of these storefronts & buildings in downtown Miami and he is not Leasing them out because he knows Developers want his properties to build new high rises on them. He is "Land Banking" and he can't sell them if he has stores with long term Leases on them. This has nothing to do with the state of the Economy in Miami which is quite healthy at the moment.

I used to intern at the Lawson E. Thomas Courthouse back in 2010-2011. It is sad seeing all of the family-owned businesses and cafes shut down and demolished. There was so much and see and do back then in that particular block around the 2 courthouses but now it is all gone.

I'm not positive but I think a lot of cities go through transitions like this. One part of the city thrives then becomes old news and eventually abandoned as new developments in other areas go up. Vegas has places like this as well. It doesn't necessarily mean the entire city is going to crap.
I live in Miami and its like that in a lot of major American cities all over the country basically big fish is eating the little fish. Large entities buying up entire neighborhoods it is what it is.
i think you hit the nail on the head. Brutal gentrification using both legal and non legal tactics and over development based on speculation. Over inflation of the commercial and residential real estate. Conflicts of interest in politics. Federal tax breaks on the loses for not having tenants in a over priced commercial space. I live in San Francisco and we are seeing the result of that here as well. Condos coming up everywhere and not many buyers or renters. So many unit sit empty yet politicians say we don’t have enough housing so we should build more condos. What a scam!
I used to work in downtown Miami way back in the 70's and 80's when it was a thriving business center. There was plenty of free or affordable parking and good public transportation. We had plenty of major dept stores (Burdine's, Richards, Jordan Marsh) that drew customers in and plenty of little "niche" (sewing, jewelry, clothing) businesses that thrived on their uniqueness. Now, with the lack of free and safe parking nobody wants to bother with the hassle of going downtown to shop when they can just drive to a mall or shop online. IMHO the only way to restore downtown Miami is to make living and shopping in the area affordable to the middle class by providing more "pedestrian only" boulevards, affordable first time buyers apts/condos, institute and enforce "no broken windows" laws to eliminate graffiti and homeless tents on public sidewalks. Case in point, Lincoln Road Mall in Miami Beach used to be a hovel till developers started to buy and restore art deco hotels that in turn drew in the young and the beautiful people that in turn revitalized the shops on Lincoln Road. This is going to require a massive commitment by politicians and developers but I believe that it can be done because what this video does not show is that just up the road Brickell Avenue is thriving with businesses and luxury apts and buildings.
This has a lot to do with local government like the mayor! Honestly tho it’s happening in many cities. Big chain stores like target and CVS in New York are fleeing they can’t keep shoplifters out. Now they have a migrant crisis and they have had stabbing a in the shelters. 5 just stole 5k out of a sunglass store. It’s sad 😞
If its anything like California, most of the homeless dont want your help and the reasons why are they get a FREE Smart-phone with a netflix/hulu account, $600 a month cash, and they get the freedom of no accountability or responsibility. They get specific safe places in hospitals to do drugs where they get free needles, free crack pipes and everything needed as far as a clean environment to get there minds melted. The second issue is. California in 2018 spent 618M+ within a year the overall homeless population statewide increased 7%, LA alone was 14% of that increase. The people responsible for orchestration of the entire program make 300K+, who knows what they pay the underlings. If they solve the Homeless issue, guess who doesnt have a 300k+ cush job anymore? You get 3 guesses and the first 2 dont count.. THEY make more money than they waste on the solutions. Same with your insurance, transportation, freighting and logistics.. EVERYTHING is being collapsed so they can usher in a FULL CASHLESS society and digital system where every transaction will be micromanaged and controlled. As a small business owner they are coming after all of the smaller than me little etsie and venmo side hustles. This happened in some parts of NYC. It has to do with development. That area has no businesses because they’re going to tear all that property down & build luxury housing. But the redevelopment has slowed because of the interest rates (making construction loans unaffordable).

Local government..well dah! It is a major city and he is the governor.Perhaps doing his job at home instead of galavanting up in N.H would benefit the saving of a major city.
Major cities fester with Democrats. Can't reason with them and lack common sense capitalism. 12 million illegal aliens must be housed somewhere. Abandoned Miami? Yep.
@@CN45475He sure got involved in local government with Disney in Orlando. He's selectively involved. Fact if the matter is Miami is the largest city in his state. He should be getting more involved with how that city is developing.
That section of downtown has been like that for years. Nobody goes by the court house to shop. The shops are closer to Biscayne Blvd. For those people not from Miami that's a main Blvd in Miami. You will find plenty of shops and restaurants in that part of downtown town.
Those small retail stores and cafes that occupied downtown Miami were supported by locals and tourists. As the city's population moves further away into modern, fashionable areas like Brickell (10 minutes south) so moved the businesses. Meanwhile tourists who visit South Florida do not stay in downtown area since there are few attractions there. Finally, the rent for downtown commercial space kept going up driving out those remaining struggling businesses. What we see now is the results.
Many of the empty storefronts are owned by one landlord who emptied them out to depress values in order to purchase more depressed real estate . When he controls enough to his liking he will be able to dictate future development. Miami is a super vibrant place . It’s unfortunate that hit has been abused by some developers.
@@kill_monger2126 Of course he is. Their text is a manual on how to conquer and rule over anyone who isn't them. They see us as bovine and the older generations here here lap it up and sell out this country to the highest bidder. You think any of that money goes to help the actual people over there? It's the same story. Most of the people live in what are basically projects and guys like him lord over them in their multi-million dollar penthouses.
Its not about that....this is the precursor to the 15 minute cities, no one will drive any where in the area. They will lock everyone down within it. the stores will reopen when people have to have food and other necessities in this limited city. google it also see "smart cities". It does not work in rural areas, but they have full intent on doing it in metropolitan downtown areas for sure.
Thank you kindly for posting. I was looking up Miami. But first I missed your video. My mother told me about it. I found it today. I was thinking of vacationing in Miami because 20 years ago I went through there and it looked so beautiful. Thank you for the warning. ❤
Born in South Carolina raised in New York let me say, this is not only happening because of the internet and chain stores but, so many people from California and New York moved there and brought the prices higher.
@@louiegonzales1407😂😂 right yet california with the largest population gdp growth and 5th largest economy in the world. Yeah some area look like shit just like every other city. California has 5 of the most expensive city's in the US of course their going to have homeless people can't afford to live their. Fun fact a lot of the homeless are bus in from sorounding states. The weather makes it great for every homeless.
This is so depressing to see, it goes to show people are going through tough times, but this is happening globally. Prayers and blessings for all of us that our days may shine again, in peace, love and happiness ❤🙏
@freddykruger3090 She's the type of idiot that believes store looters during riots are stealing bread to feed their children because AOC said so. This country needs to rid itself of liberals.
Don't forget, that many of those on the streets used to own or rent those buildings to run their businesses. The rich become richer, the poor become poorer. Exactly what God said would happen in these times is happening. Stand by,...... much more to come.
The state of downtown is genuinely sad, it's being overshadowed by new condo developments in Brickell and Park West while Overtown and other neighborhoods suffer.
I couldn’t get over the amount of bicycle traffic on those downtown streets. Totally needed instead of those useless parking spots that would bring in shoppers. The Mayor must be well up on her ESG scores by now.
We just got bike lanes put in 2 years ago and I haven't seen a single biker in them. Maybe they want to start giving free Starbuck Frappuccino's at bike lane checkpoints to encourage the people who demanded them to use them?
I ride my bike all the time. Everything is so close. It’s ridiculous to have a car in this area. The traffic is impossible. Sorry you rich people can’t park your over expensive cars that you show off and drive way to fast just to get to the next red light and then beep at the guy in front of you if he does not respond the the green light fast enough. You all got it wrong. You need to slow down get on a bike.
Politicians and big businesses don't are about homelessness, poor, mental illness, healthcare, people in general or anything else. They only care about greed, corruption, chaos, violence and intimidation.
The poor w/all attendant problems have always been ignored. Mental illness is still regarded as a moral issue; now prisons repurpose units specifically to house the mentally ill. I lived as an untreated bipolar, homeless, wandering for a few years. I understand this life. However, the infrastructure of the city wasn’t crumbling, there were some available services, and nobody was starving. Drugs weren’t as suicidal as today. (Always excepting heroin) Small businesses thrived, there was reliable city transportation, medical clinics. When I see these areas now, in all cities, l can see how many more people are on the curb. It’s unconscionable. There is no governmental assistance. Starting to look like 1929, beginning of the Great Depression! Self interest rules, all over the globe. Everywhere. ❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Thank you honey, I absolutely LOVE hearing you preaching aloud about bathrooms and closed buildings! I get lectured when I even bring that up! Those with 'money' find just something else to avoid the subject and sound like a youth hitting puberty. I would love to have the funds to create a place for many, however if Respect isn't carried out- you gotta Go. Man needs to learn to Love and Respect one another, we're ALL 'Family'.
Man watching this video, makes me sad,I grew up in Miami in the eighties and nineties.I remember the hustle and bustle of downtown Miami every store front was open .
Most cities began a rapid econimic decline and shut down their downtown businesses in the early 80s under Clinton who outsourced businesses and manufacturing to China, Mexico etal. I was born in Broward and grew up in Miami. Went to Jr College by bus in downtown Miami. It was thriving in the 60-70s and the Cuban refugees helped make it a beautiful busy metropolis. It now looks like a third world country, as does the rest of our country's urban downtown cities. Thank you for your video, altho sad. ❤
I live in Miami. True, parts of downtown are not great. Some of the stores are empty because the building is going to be demolished. Other parts of Miami are very nice, with new construction.
I started traveling overseas with the military at 19, loved visiting 10+ countries and even experiencing Iraq was something to see. Almost 20 years ago after my military retirement I moved to the Philippines where I have visited previously. I'm from Texas, visited all over the US and it breaks my heart to see how far my homeland has fallen. Really makes me happy to have moved overseas where there's no politics, no race, no woke BS, low crime, and plenty of old fashioned Asian women. My wife who was a virgin will be with me 16 years in March, and married 13 in June. Or 3 daughters are a real blessing too!
I am also considering moving out of the country. I looked out of my window and saw a young mom and dad pushing a baby carriage and walking 2 little dogs. I said to myself that is a rare site.
@zyrabell69 Well done Sir, i too am a Veteran Infantry soldier and my wife is Filipina, we have been married 27 years. We have a home on Cebu, tho we are currently in New Zealand, my home country. Don't give too much info on here. God bless you and your wife and family Sir. Maybe one day we'll meet up? Bob. Veteran.
All I can say is I hope they start electing people who will clean up their cities and protect their citizen's from the onslaught of people trying to destroy a once vibrant area. Keep your laws enforced and remove and or arrest those who won't abide by the laws in the book.
JUST EXACTLY is this saying when a country lets this many citizens be left out on the street and does NOTHING to promote healthy climate for businesses to thrive in a major city .. but welcomes people from far away in other countries come here and the peoples tax money is used for ALL types of programs to uplift them ? Debit cards with $9,000 dollar limits , using OUR money to put them up in fancy hotels, them get ahold of e-bikes and automobiles while the throw school children out of there own schools and make them do there studies ON LINE at home ( If they have a home ) also giving them FREE HEALTHCARE
