Tara Franklin lmaoo did you not watch the movie. I agree it wasn’t really an EVIL queen but it was a wizard queen ending a decade old war after getting asked nicly
@@TheHotpotato-bp7mm Did you? Suliman was the court sorceress, she wasn't a queen and she wasn't asked. She saw Justin returned to his human form and said to herself that it was time to "put an end to this idiotic war".
Fun fact: WW2 veterans were expecting Saving Private Rian to be a silly war movie, but left movie theaters crushed by how reallistically it portrayed the horrors of war. Grave of the Fireflies is Saving Private Rian's animated counterpart.
my favorite is Howl's Moving Castle, it's like a perfect fairy tale. it does feel a bit rushed at the end, but it actually ends with "They lived happily ever after" which seems to be lacking in films these days
So what is the point of "When Marnie was There" as a story? A child believes themselves to be worthless, but over the summer is put with relatives away from the city where she can explore with new relationships. She meets a girl moving into a house which catches her interest due to it being familiar to her. She imagines a friend with stories of being locked up in her house or other buildings and finally realizes this imaginary friend is her grandmother and the stories told to her as a preschooler that the house refreshed for her. The point was she realized she was loved when her Grandmother was a part of her life, so the summer gives her strength to return to her life realizing she is special to someone. So what is the point of "Only Yesterday" as a story? A woman believes she is successful in life at her job, but upon taking a work stint away from the city she remembers her youth and what her desires were for herself from elementary school. Through this reassessment she comes to realize her life is passing her by, in terms of what matters, and gives up on her job to remain with the work she took away from the city. The point was she realized pursuing her dreams are more important than stability and responsibility that adults force upon themselves to fit into the society around them.
I personally thought that Marnie (Annas grandmother) was trying to reconnect with her as a spirit. When Marnie lived in the house by the lake she was happy even though her nanny and maids abused her. She had a tough life and as a ghost she chosed to stay at her house by the lake. There she would repeate her happiest days in there for the rest of her eternity. But then Anna came. Marnie wanted to show Marnie how much she loved her, she wanted to show Anna that she wasn't alone. By the end of the movie when Anna had a fever and when she met up with Marnie again Marnie asked for forgiveness, for leavong Anna behind, although it wasn't her fault that she died. She was finally at peace when Anna forgave her.
I'm sad that Howl's moving castle isn't talked about more. It's one of my favorites, but that's only because I read the book it's based on... Book and movie are almost nothing alike by the way.
Jared Poth there are things I absolutely love about the movie, like billy crystal as calcifer, the humor, the color/cinematography, but it was so confusing, the plot meanders and there are too many superfluous characters. Turnip head didn’t have to be in the film (or at least the human he transformed into) as did the mother and the subplot of finding a new husband and ratting her out to witch what’s her name.
The underlying theme of the film is anti-war, and the Turnip Head thing is to show the pointlessness of war. The war was supposedly started because the prince went missing. So when it was revealed he was the scarecrow, it was like “All that fighting and turmoil we went through had absolutely no point”
Also, I thought the plot was actually quite straight forward... but then again, it is my favourite movie ever and I’ve seen it a million times. Not even looking at it for an essay could destroy my love for it!
It's been ages since I saw it, but I remember being pretty unimpressed. My big takeaway was that it felt like a mashup of themes and ideas which Miyazaki had already explored thoroughly in much better previous films.
I really enjoyed Only Yesterday. It reminded me of my school days and my summer vacations, it has Romanian folk music (that made me really proud of my country) and as a woman that is around 30 and not married it really spoke to me in that matter. It was slow paced indeed but just make a cup of tea and enjoy the stunning animation.
The painfully slow pace definitely leaves room to think about your own childhood, I think that’s what the film was attempting. A lot of wether or not you enjoy it will come down to if you relate to it.
@@samaustin8690 as her childhood was reminiscing of mine the slow pace did give me time to relieve mine along the way. felt nice to be remembered of good memories
Kiki's is my favorite. I am a huge fan of the down to earth emotional slice of life types over the magical fantasy types. I think kiki does a great job of not overusing her being a witch and relies more heavily on the characters.
I love how both it and totoro both slowed down, used real life. I mean if you took the magic out they could both be someone's real life. And very well might be similar. That and I love them,I honestly can't explain my love for those movies. +ponyo
Slevin Channel Isao takahata unfortunately passed away, but Hayao Miyazaki is working on a new film called “How do you live?” that will hopefully come out in a few years or so. Also Miyazaki’s son Goro is planning on carrying on his father’s legacy !! :-)
It doesn't suck, its just his opinion. He literally discussed the difference between subjective and objective opinion in this same video. I'm glad you enjoyed it, be happy you did!
@@alextoschi2242 But he said he really didn't like Ponyo and it got a 7. He said if he was being subjective than Ponyo would have gotten a 3. How does Marnie have enough problems to be considered a "bad" movie - wasting time and being fairly dull? It certainly wasn't the first time I watched it. Or the third.
I kinda feel like he missed the whole point of Only Yesterday. The whole idea is to evoke a sense of nostalgia in that typical ghibli fashion, and all those simple scenes that may seem drawn-out or pointless are precisely what make it so, so good and enjoyable. One of the things that makes ghibli movies so great is their attention to detail and the way they manage to make even the most trivial matter interesting to watch. Never in my life did I think I would feel so much by watching a scene of a little family eating pineapple for 5 minutes, but the animation, the way they spoke and tried to pretend to like it before admitting it sucked, how they thought of explanations like maybe it's because of this or that. How Taeko just forces herself to eat it even though she visibly dislikes it only because it was her who was the most excited. It all felt so, so real and relatable, I could literally see myself and my family right there, even though that exact scene has never happened to us. And this is just one scene that I talk about because it was mentioned in the video, but there are soooo many that I could go on about forever. So yeah, movies don't need to be so heavily plot-driven in order to be good, sometimes it's enough to create that feeling of something tangible and real. Edit: just because I see many replies mentioning this, I never said that "getting" the movie = automatically liking it. There are many movies I understand yet dislike as well. I just said that I felt the video didn't really "get" the point, at least in my opinion, and that it was a little subjective in presenting and rating it. Oh, and I'm also not simply defending the movie because it's my favourite-I love it, but it's not even close to that. Just thought I should clarify this, thank y'all for being civil, have a nice day :)
Well said. Only Yesterday felt like a breath of fresh air to me.. very relaxing and slow-paced compared to your typical crazy action-packed movie that never takes a minute to let its audience pause, reflect, react, or feel anything. It's not an exciting movie, for sure, but I enjoyed it because it was relatable and touching.
Only few will actually appreciate it i think. It depends on how we lived and how the film connects to us. At first, i thought it would be boring and long but it's fine. I especially love the ending. It gave us a beautifully done conclusion.
Even if it’s not plot driven, there’s many movies and shows that have scenes that make us want to watch and feel good, but idk, only yesterday just got me so bored. I loved the scenes when she was a child, but any scene as her as an adult felt somewhat pointless for some reason. I think it’s just hard for most of us to grasp the meaning, and that’s why it’s hard for us to like it even if others do. I wouldn’t call it a terrible movie though by all means, it’s just not for me and when people dislike it, I see exactly why.
Anne Smith the movie isn’t for everyone, only yesterday Is my favorite ghibli movie by far, it describes incredibly well 70s Japanese family and the director transmite pretty well his values and feelings. I can understand why people doesn’t like this o movie and others ghibli works like grave of the fireflies, tales of the princess kaguya they lack of action and are slow paced.
Getting the point doesn't make it not suck. Commit 100% to illustrating a theme and a mood if you gotta, but it's a high risk film-making strategy since if you DON'T successfully hack the emotions of the audience and make them think you're a genius through the power of nostalgia pineapples... all you're left with is unforgivably boring nothingness.
Grave of the Fireflies literally changed my life. It made me appreciate my life and to stay happy with what you have and also made me understand the value of food. IDK what everyone thinks but it's soooooooo good.
@@shivipivi Believe it or not, I found it on RU-vid for free. I just couldn’t bring myself to finish it because it left me feeling too distressed. I’ll revisit it when I’m feeling better.
The Cat Returns is the Japanese Close Encounters of the Third Kind - a long slow rambling build up to a very pretty last 20 minutes that makes it all worth while.
When Marnie Was There is fantastic, animation and soundtrack wise, and the original story is so charming. Don’t let one bad review get you upset about it ❤️
strawzii I really enjoyed the movie too, it also introduced me to the book it’s based off of, which really gives more depth to both characters, also they’re a lot younger in the book so their reactions and feelings are more in line with how a kid would feel in such circumstances, I really recommend reading it.
I think it is funny how the puritanical culture of the west has affected people so deeply they literally cannot comprehend men having close intimate friendships without being sexual. This is evident with how often people claim that a male friendship is actually a sexual relationship.
@@jacobodom8401 i'll admit i misused the word "homoerotic", i didnt mean to imply their relationship to be sexual, but romantic. the story's ending would have been more satisfying if the two ended up together
*number 3 has sounds from Kiki taking off for the first time in Kiki's delivery service* me: oh, so number 3 is Kiki's delivery service *number 3 isn't Kiki's delivery service* me: SCREEEEeEEeEeeEeEeEee
Holy fuck someone's actually acknowledging The Cat Returns for once, somebody pinch me I must be dreaming. I love all the Ghibli movies, but The Cat Returns has a special place in my heart. It got my younger sister into Ghibli. She fell in love with it when we watched it on TV together, and hasn't stopped talking about it since. I remember her freaking out when I got it for her birthday years later. It's nice to see someone else recognising how cute and whimsical it is. Nice video as always Jello!
Man. The main character was boring though. He just liked planes, and smoked around his wife who was having breathing troubles. When she dies he has no reaction at all. Hard pass.
Pom Poko is one of my favorites. Probably second favorite, right after Spirited Away and right above EarthSea. The Cat Returns was very fun too and I like it.
I like Pom Poko mostly, but you have to remember that for Western audiences, it has a certain... unusual controversial aspect that the creators swing around the whole movie and is kind of hard to ignore as it just hangs there
It's kinda sad how unpopular "From Up On The Poppy Hill" seems to be. I thought it was simply beautiful, how it portrayed camaraderie, maturity and teamwork between teens.
it was very realistic as well, the kids had feelings for each other and even when they found out they weren't siblings they didn't get together and i feel like in most movies they would but it's nice bc irl most people would not want to be in relationship with someone who might have been yer brother yk
Yess, I love From up on poppy hill, I love the colors and the magic of the clubhouse. I mean, it's so positive considering that it is a "real life" based film, I loved the plot, how everyone got together and worked so hard to save the clubhouse and the details with the flags and everything
I personally LOVED Only Yesterday,it tackled childhood incense with such fluidity. As an asian, seeing how Teako's family was so distant, it really made me think, "Yeah, Japanese nuclear families" It's natural, Jello, natural.
*innocence but yeah Only Yesterday is pretty underrated imo, Way better than Jello described it being I’d give it a 6/10 or 7/10 idk which one, Good but not essential, But you’re probably gonna like it if you watch it It’s definitely better than Pom Pokko lol
I think it has to do with that movie, Only yesterday had a really long scene about the girl's family buying and eating a pineapple since it was pretty rare. SPOILERS: They didn't like the pineapple, I think it was because it was still green and they didn't even knew how to eat it.
Ponyo! Ponyo! Ponyo fishy in the Sea! tiny little fishy, who could you really be? This movie was my whole childhood! I watched it like 900,000,000 times!
I loved this movie so much when I was really young, recently my entire family watched a movie that made me start to remember something. My memories of the movie were faint but I finally remembered the name. We bought the movie and watched it. I was so happy when I was watching it cause it was a major part of my childhood,I almost cried.
Whisper of the Heart...I literally have written two essays in school about how much I love that film and how well it balances its themes with its story. The pacing in my opinion is one of the best in any film I’ve ever seen. However the resonation I get from it stems from her trying to follow what she’s passionate about in life and doubting her own skills. Probably because I’m an artist and I watched it when I was first getting into art...but I think the pacing at least is objectively perfect, and the director (who died shortly after its release) actually did a better job I feel than if Hayao Miyazaki directed it. The slower pace really adds to it and every scene fits each other in tone.
I still think about the “raw emerald has to become cut and polished, and even then, there might be even more gems in the ore that aren’t seen yet” almost daily.
Tale of Princess Kaguya is a glorified screensaver in all of the best ways. The story, emotions, and everything else about it is literally told through the artstyle. I won't say any more. Go watch. Now.
Tales from earth sea and mononoke are both good, but earth sea just doesn't make sense no matter how many times you watch it. Mononokes characters are irritatingly dumb. They always make the obvious wrong move. They both good tho.
-Spirited Away -Laputa Castle In The Sky -The Secret World Of Arrietty -Whisper Of The Heart -Kiki's Delivery Service -From Up On Poppy Hill -Princess Mononoke -My Neighbor Totoro -Ponyo
I saw it recently, and although it has good themes, nice animation, and good use of certain visual techniques, I also thought it was...well, boring. 😂 There really isn't a plot or entertainment value.
Could you explain why you like it so much? I'm very interested to hear because this film got amazing reviews, and when I watched it I could tell that it was metaphorical and very deep, but I just didn't GET it.
I loved that movie too. It isnt my fav butit actually touched some themes that are close to me. The end was weird for me but I will never forget about this story.
Idk, but I felt like “When Marnie Was There” was more gayish than Ocean Waves. I mean, yeah, Marnie turned out to be Anna’s Grandma, with Anna taking the role of her Grandfather, but still. That rowing scene was absolutely gay.
@@rattatouilletherat the interesting thing about this is you can potentially read the "gay" vibes between Marnie and Anna as parental, such as how Marnie teaches and holds Anna while rowing. For someone unfamiliar it could look like childhood crush, but on rewatch it could look like parental guidance. Them two dancing is another example of how it could look more parental than love depending on how you choose to read it. These scenes are shot in such a way that both interpretations feel valid, or at least I think so. I will say, however, that Ocean Waves feels like an unapologetically gay movie. It's fantastic, especially considering it was likely accidental lol. I definitely feel like this was the more gay movie of the two, but that's just me. I understand why people wouldn't like Ocean Waves, since it's arguably a pretty boring movie, but the subtext is what makes the movie, at least for me. Analysing the gay themes is really interesting.
@@AshuriAikawa Your interpretation is more serious and makes more sense than this initial one I had. I suppose the line between “crush” and maternal figure was blurred in this movie, and to good effect.
Welp im a bit sad about “When Marnie was there” since i feel like its not a very known ghibli movie and i think its really good :/ but other than that, i can somewhat agree on the majority of the rest ;)
Idk, but I felt like the hate the movie got was very misplaced. In the almost two hours that it lasts, it really only shows a sliver of what her life has been like. When the girls from school came to drop off her things, when they were talking to Auntie about her demeanor at school, I could kind of pick up on their ill will towards her, because of her antisocial behavior. Her attitude towards her parents, feeling like they abandoned her might stem from them being young and work oriented. The abandonment issues also seem to have stemmed from the death of her grandmother, and the subsequent placement of her in foster care (again.) Her grandma protected her for 2 years, gave her stability, and gave her value, and it was all swept up from under her, not long after her parents death. For gods sake, people at her Grandmother’s funeral were talking about her like she was a nuisance and a problem. She was like some sick puppy that got in the way of things. Her experience in foster care must’ve been very cold and impersonal, as she was a ward of the state, and not actually valued much by others. By then, she must’ve known what happened to her parents. Coupled with her surroundings, it made her feel worthless. While being put into her “Auntie’s” care might have been refreshing for a while, the stigma she’d have gotten from her peers for being a foster child would’ve weighed heavily on her, and made her feel out of place. For a lot of the people in the comment section, the fact that she feels so hurt by the fact that her auntie gets checks from the state in order to care for her seems very ill placed, but from a certain point of view, and with some context, it makes sense. For most of her life, the people around her viewed her as a problem and a responsibility, not as a person to love and care for. The times she did recieve that love were cut short by tragedy, which for an impressionable young child would make them feel undeserving. She feels like the one person that is supposed to care for her is only doing so for monetary gain, and benefit, not because she loves and cares about her. (Also, on a side note, she might’ve recieved ill treatment for being of mixed ancestry. From my knowledge, Marnie’s Dad was British, though the mom is kind of a mystery. Anna had features that most Japanese people really don’t have, like blue eyes. Japan is a very homogeneous country, with very little immigration, and very little mixing between other ethnicities. The outburst she had at the fat girl during the Moon festival kind of hints at this.) I’m sorry for this long rant. I really enjoyed the film, and I feel like I picked up on some stuff that others didn’t really notice. I probably made some mistake along the way though.
Ponyo was my first Ghibli movie, so it holds a rly special place in my heart as my favorite Ghibli movie. *BUT*.... Spirited away is a great choice for the number one slot. I love that movie a whole lot.
Jello: I cannot recommend Only Yesterday to anyone. (Checks Rotten Tomatoes) 100% fresh. The irony. Edit: (Just for clarification, I’m not agreeing or disagreeing with Jello or saying that I think the movie is good just because of the Rotten Tomatoes score or anything. I haven’t seen the movie personally. I’m just commenting that it’s ironic that the one Ghibli film that he thought was terrible managed to earn the rare status of being approved by every critic that has had their review of it added to Rotten Tomatoes.)
@@happyllama1160 Good way to describe it. It's very relaxing... Not something that I'd want to rewatch a million times, but I've seen it once and really enjoyed it. I found the main character and her story relatable.
I watched Only Yesterday the first time when I was in high school, I thought it was extremely boring and pointless. Then Netflix starting having Ghibli movies recently so I decided to watch Only Yesterday again and oh my god it was so heart-warming!!! I felt totally different the second time round, maybe I'm older, things have changed in my life and I appreciate the simple things more. It's now one of my favourites I'm so surprised! (Btw the pineapple scene is pretty funny)
honestly it is a boring story which i do not like taiko i think her life was the most normal life i have ever seen and she does nothing cool her mother says she isn’t normal but her life is literally so normal. sometimes life has highs sometimes it doesn’t
Did he just gave Grave of the fireflies a 7?? one of the greatest ( and the absolute saddest ) war movies ever made That movie is compared to schindler's list,
Howl's Moving Castle is my fav movie off all time because it has everything I ask for in the movie- Romance, humor, fantasy, adventure, enjoyable and intriguing characters, epic visuals. I watch this movie once a year at least (which is a lot for me since I am not a movie person). I kind of wish you had mention the animated Rankin/Bass movies since the animation studio they used would go on to be a huge part of Studio Ghibli. Taking about The Last Unicorn, Flight of Dragons, The Hobbit, and Return of the King (I think that's all). It's okay though.
You know; my favourite movie was song of the sea, then howl's moving castle, and now I'm at a point in my life where I'm just like, "what even is a favourite list?"
Completely with you on ‘Princess Mononoke’ - I absolutely loved how that film treated both the side of the forest and the metalworkers in a such a nuanced and multifaceted way. No bad guys; just different folks with different people and things to protect. Just like real life. I must say, I was surprised to see ‘The Red Turtle’ so far down the list. That film shook me in ways I can’t really put into words. I’m not the most stoic, manly man in the world but even so it’s rare for a film to leave me crying for hours on end after watching it, and even rarer for a film to leave me lying awake at night thinking it over. I thought the stroke of genius here was in the simplicity and ambiguity of how the story was told, so you can paint yourself onto the story. It was a film that that I knew from the first time watching it would never, ever leave me; beautiful, and heart-wrenching, and well within my all-time top 10 favorite films.
Fun fact! Reiko Yoshida (the writer of The Cat Returns) also wrote the manga Tokyo Mew Mew, and got one of the movies she did the screenplay for the stamp of approval from the Dalai Lama.
When I watched When Marnie Was There, I was promised lesbian ghosts. I did not receive lesbian ghosts. There was not a single lesbian ghost in sight and that makes me angry.
Whisper Of The Heart is a movie I truly feel is too underrated. It is absolutely without question a slice of life movie, and it is rather slow. But I don't mind that, as the visuals are positively stunning of 90's Japan. The story is very relatable to me, as someone who didn't really get amazing grades, didn't like school, and wanted to do something. The idea of trying your hardest to do what you want to do in life, that it is not easy but hard work, and that you'll suffer on the road to success is a really important one for people with little direction like myself. If anything, I need to rewatch the movie to remember the importance of focus in life, to find direction and create meaning. It's a great story for those who have hobbies or ambitions in things that can get caught in ruts, or for those who know what they want to do but hear all the people saying not to pursue it. To take the leap of faith, but commit to it wholeheartedly in the rough patches. Love the movie. Also loved From Up On Poppy Hill. Howl's Moving Castle is a blast, but read the book after you watch the movie then come back. It both makes the book better for Ghibli's visuals in your mind but also the movie better as you'll understand where the movie wanted to go but didn't. The movie is still a fever dream, and I prefer the book in general. Now excuse me, I'm gonna get ready to Merry Go Round Of Life.
I was always a bit iffy when the fan-favorite ship is Haru x Baron. Don't get me wrong, Baron is awesome, and they have great chemistry, but there is also the fact that Haru is like 14 and Baron is ageless and the fact that Haru has to leave her loved ones behind in order to make that work.
Only Yesterday feels like a movie you'd want to watch on a sunny summer's day, alone, because it seems like a slice of life kind of movie, and you want an excuse to eat a lot of snacks and watch something more casual that won't demolish your heart like what those american bomber planes did to Seita's hometown from Grave of the Fireflies. 😭
That movie I loved so much and honestly it’s arguably my top favorite Miyazaki movie, that or Mononoke. As for Van Der Beek, Yeah he sounded a bit too old but I didn’t mind it and still thought he did great and Mark Hamill as Muska was perfect.
It's not my favorite, but it does have my single favorite action scene(s) from Miyazaki. The entire sequence in the first act that starts with the street brawl, spirals out of control, and turns into a madcap train chase. It's amazing. Too bad I just could never buy into the whole "We have to destroy Laputa to save it" thing. I'd say it's by far the most tonally uneven of Miyazaki's movies. It's like he was trying to just do a simple shonen story, but couldn't quite pull it off and so it wavers between his usual environmentalism and more standard pewpew anime action that seems a bit out-of-place in his overall filmography as an independent filmmaker.
I genuinely think it's a brilliant movie, one of my favourites but that is definitely personal, I'd say it's more 'eh' as a piece of filmography - it was more gritty and realistic though in some forms which is why I love it so much!
@@Gh0stty_ you know art is not only ment to be funny and exiting, takahata's film are not ment to please you. there are not made for entertainment but to make you think with the use of different stories. Most of his works are kinda "boring" also because they are ment to so. if you focus on the artistic part and meaning of the film you will be able to enjoy it, but to do so you have to be kinda intelligent which is not for everybody. remember art is not ment to put you in the confort zone, it has to punch you right in the face when you don't see it comming.
naaah...opinion is opinion.........but based on what he said, he probably missed some plotpoints and details in the movie becaise he mentions some incurate things.
I'll be honest, I really really liked when marnie was there for a long part of that movie, until I realised that she was her grandmother. But like, they were literally so obviously flirting and so obviously gay for each other??? Like wtf did I just watch, ghibli just tricked me into watching a grandmother and granddaughter sweet home alabama for an hour Edit: I should've said this back when I originally made this comment, but I don't hate the movie for this. I still like it, it just confuses me that they made it seem so much like they might be a thing only to turn it around and say they were related. But I'm well aware that the movie is a decently nice movie beyond that, and it means a lot to me despite my qualms.
I always just saw it as a very close friendship. I have the same giggly, touchy-feely "I love you" kind of relationship with several of my sisters and my childhood best friend.
Japanese culture. Best friends are way more touchy-feely than Western best friends. That's why they're always clinging to each other. I'm sure the "I love you"s are supposed to come off as familial love.
Me the first 10 min into the cats return: wait hollup...so the cats have parades and princes and bodyguards and are magical and this human girl has to mary a freaking cat? Me towards the end with the biggest grin on my face: I LOVE THIS MOVIE
Me explaining some reactions to Ghibli films badly: Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - Lord of the Rings meets Star Wars TFA meets the Age of Strife from Warhammer 40k. Porco Rosso - You will end this movie with a "wait it just ended?" but then have a craving for anything made out of tomatoes and olive oil and can only listen to Italian music. Princess Mononoke - This is the Zelda game you will never have. Kiki's Delivery Service - You can finally make one of the world's cheapest cosplay second to the "I am Gundam" cosplay from 2007. Grave of the Fireflies - You finally accept that Ghibli is not like the kiddy friendly Disney. The Cat Returns - As a kid, you thought it was cute. As an adult, you may question yourself if you have just initated a fetish for furry transformation. Castle in the Sky - This is literally just Star Wars: A New Hope but...steampunk...I guess? My Neighbour Totoro - In the Japanese audio, you think Mei is adorable. In the English Dub, will you even consider having kids if they would scream alot and have the big brain power of a fruit fly like Disney Mei? Ponyo - Finding Nemo is overrated. Spirited Away - Japanese Acid When Marnie was there - You will never look at your Grandma the same way again. The Tale of Princess Kaguya - a.) You will either think that Kaguya's parents never deserved her and it was completely justified that mah boi Buddha took her or b.) (like me) you completely hate Buddha and his moon posse and will always explain the ending as "Kaguya kidnapped by mufuking Buddha" and you will continue your eternal hate for Buddha until Ghibli decides to do sequels with fanservice. Tales from Earthsea - Gandalf vs ASMR Willem Defoe while Frodo has an existential crisis and facial muscle disability and I guess there are also dragons. Secret World of Arriety - Little Tom Holland has a small people fetish.
Franken Waifu this is great! I honestly never thought of mononoke like that, and I want a Zelda game like that now. I also agree on princess kaguya, I was so pissed when it ended with her being taken away.
Actually, Nausicäa was influenced very much by Dune (the book). The book also inspired Star Wars, so it makes sense that you put the movie there. I love all three (Dune, Star Wars, and Nausicäa, by the way.)
When Marnie was There is one of my favourites. It may be because I relate to the character a lot more. I have social anxiety and struggle with mental health, so watching her struggle but then overcome those things was just really amazing.
There's a starman waiting in the sky Man if this video had come out 3 days ago id be with you. But i just saw cagliostro for the first time and fell in love. Still a fantastic movie tho
Surprisingly I loved Only Yesterday. I feel like related to a lot of it. I enjoyed the nostalgic parts as well as the simple easy going parts of her adult life. But I understand how people can be turned off by it. Very interesting to see you view :)
Agreed. I saw it as a story of introspection and self discovery over a specific critique of Japanese modernization like Pom Poko. The story's themes are woven in well between the two time periods and there are certain liberties allowed because of the animation format that you can't do in live action. I personally find it odd that people are put off by "uncanny" moments in film like "talking for eight minutes" when we all do this. I suppose when you're made aware of it, it's a bit jarring to some but we all have mundane moments and there can be growth in that.
Mine was a monstrosity called "Warriors of the Wind," which is *Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind* with about 20 minutes removed, the story completely screwed up, and terrible English dubbing. It was basically the first Ghibli film that made it to the US (back in the mid-1980's), and Miyazaki had absolutely no control over what they did to it. He never made that mistake again.
I guess you didn't get what the pineapple scene or even the whole movie was about and don't consider being able to speak, see, hear, taste aso. a precious gift of wonder, but boring standard. Like most do. Oh well
I think Only Yesterday is average because all of the events have no value in moving a very small plot along but I do think the animation is great and the characters are relatable. I’d give it a 6/10. Although When Marnie Was There is in my top three due to its incredible polished animation, its unique characters, and symbolism used to convey everyday emotions. I’d give it a 9/10.
The movie i have watched: 1- howl moving castle 2-spirited away 3- the cat returns 4- kiki service delivery 5- whisper of the heart 6- my neighbour totoro 7- arrietty 8- laputa : castle in the sky But i really wanted to see princess monokoe...
Porco Rosso is my favourite animarted movie of all time, because there is so much respect and passion and love in it. I live in tuscany, and its unbelivable how a japanese writer got italian people so perfectly, in fact Porco itself speacks and thinks exactly how an olf family friend would. Milano industrial zone looks exactly like Milano, the Adriatic sea is perfectly rendered at the point that vegetation looks photorealistic, even the towns streets lock more real than pictures essentially creating a perfect image of 1910's Italy. The fact that there is no actual antagonist but just an honorable challenge between two pilots makes me remember what it means to be ENTERTAINED, to see every character and think "i would befriend them immediatley". And least but not last the obvious and genuine love for hydrofighter displayed shows me that studio Ghibli was having fun while making it.
Actually i still dont see them as antagonists, fascists are more like a "setting" and pirates are similar to a "comic relief" considering how bad they are at what they do. The only antagonist is Donald Curtis, but he is not evil at all, just a bit too ambitious, but a totally onorable character.
There is so much to this movie, when I first watched it I was ready for some fantasy movie like totoro or the valley of the wind, but i was so mind blown by the realism and the details, all the love that was put on it I deeply love this film And lets not forget the soundtrack (Sorry if my english is bad)
"Earthsea is in crisis, but the people of the land are so catty and bitter about everything you just don't want them to be saved" that's not Earthsea, that's totally France
My 3 favourite is: 1.Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. This film for me is about connection, that people once had with nature, but lost it. It's very close to what I see nowadays. I feel so connected with Nausicaa's pacifism and empathy. 2. Spirited away. Very emotional and extremely beautiful movie. 3. My Neighbor Totoro. It's also about nature and how people communicate with it, often using religion, about dealing with hard times in our lives, especially when you're child.
My top 5: 1. Laputa: Castle In The Sky 2. Kiki's Delivery Service 3. Ponyo 4. Princess Mononoke 5. Kiki's Delivery Service Bonus: The Secret World of Arrietty You're probably wondering where is Spirited Away? Well, although I enjoyed the film.. I enjoyed the movies above the most, simply because of how the story just sticks with me in my opinion...
My top 5: 1. Princess Mononoke 2. Howl's Moving Castle 3. Porco Rosso 4. The Cat Returns 5. Kiki's Delivery Service Loved all the movies but these stood out the most.
you know when you see a list and you see some of your favs on it including an underdog, its a pretty good way to find out which movies you want to watch next, thanks mate
Laputa is my favorite, people say its "too long" but I say its just right, it uses the time for character development and fights well and uses the free space inbetween as breathing room to not exhaust the viewer
When Marnie Was There is a beautiful film. It's not like most Studio Ghibli films but it went straight to my heart and I practically had tears in my eyes at the end when I saw it in the theatre. My favorite one is Howl's Moving Castle and I read the books and saw that the plot was vastly different, but I don't mind.
I personally loved "When Marnie Was There" because it combined a good mixture of character emotion along with an amazing storyline, and I greatly encourage people to watch it if they want that pure ghibli feeling.
I love The Tale of Princess Kaguya. It's so underrated and was even nominated for best animated film but I feel like not a lot of people have seen it. For those who are curious: the movie is based on a legend called 'the tale of the bamboo cutter' and focuses on home as a theme. It's super good and I highly, highly recommend it.
I have read the tale that the movie is based off of, but I haven't watched this movie yet, I was considering it. I haven't watched any anime in a long time so maybe now's a good time
I totally agree there. I always end up having to pirate Ghibli films, but I couldn't find that one. I bought the DVD at Barnes and Noble, and I ended up watching it with my older stepsister. It's one of our favourite films now. The pacing is pretty off putting to some people though.
I loved The Tale of Princess Kaguya! I love the artstyle and the traditional features. What pisses me off the most is- -SPOILER WARNING Do NOT READ UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE SPOILED- the music at the end. Don't get me wrong, the ending is bound to happen. BUT IT IS SUCH A SAD MOMENT FOR THOSE CHARACTERS AND YOU JUST HEAR THE HAPPIEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD WHILE THOSE PARENTS ARE THEIR EYES OUT.
The Cat Returns is just such an adorable movie I've loved since I first saw it and nobody talks about it and I'm like??? Guys??? It's so cute can I please talk to you about it?
2:28 I found out the other day that Tom Holland voices the boy in the English dub, and he was like 15 when he did it. HE PLAYED A PREPUBESCENT CHILD AND MADE IT SOUND CONVINCING. I HONESTLY THOUGHT IT WAS JUST SOME RANDOM KID BUT NOOOO IT WAS SPOODERMAN. Thank you for coming to my TED talk
Holly Ingram I thought it was David Henrie from Wizards. I could have sworn it was him for the English dub. Edit: I see there was a Disney version and a normal version. David Henrie was the voice for the Disney one and Tom Holland was the voice for the normal one.
most of the video is for the nostalgia's sake obviously. He looks from the it has to be good perspective to the old films, praises them but disses the new films like kanye.
There are a lot of subtle hints scattered throughout the movie that explain Anna’s behavior. Like, some of the mfs in this comment section don’t seem to be able to pick up on any of it
@@rattatouilletherat oh fancy you here, I read your huge paragraph on When Marie Was There in a reply section a couple minutes ago, it was really well said :)
Only Yesterday is actually my favorite Ghibli movie. I've seen it 4-5 times, and I'm never bored of it. It was interesting to see how is your opinion is different, and why. I think it's a calming movie, which I can watch on a lazy Sunday. And it has really relatable yet simple topics, which is really hard to find these days, because every film is trying to be as interesting, as it can be, which is sometimes so ridiculous to me. And Only Yesterday is just so real, that's why I like it :) But still, really cool video, good job! :)
Little Riley I couldn't agree more. I didn't find boring the fact that it is so simple and slow. It made me compare my life with the protagonist's, and think a little more about its topics since they are so close to reality. Even tho I love it, I can see why some people don't like it.
I really wanna make a comment about focusing on a pineapple for ten minutes but I can't bring myself to do it when everyone here is actually having a respectful discussion.
I love this movie!!!!!! But I think sometimes it’s a little boring but I still think it one of the best to me it’s the 3 just because I like neighbour tartou and wolf children 🐺 better it has a strong message and the animation is great!!
