The High Elf ship from Dreadfleet is on there but guessing that's just because they had the art lying around

The four High Elf colonies on the coast of Bretonnia have been marked on the map since - and pointed out as such in a WarCom article - many moons ago.

High Elves were fighting in the Old World at that time, so it is reasonable to assume they are one of those armies. Lizardmen, Dark Elves, Chaos Dwarves, Cathay, and maybe Ogre Kingdoms (not counting Nippon, Ind or Albion - presuming Albion isn't counted as being in 'The Old World') are about the only ones which weren't. But clearly Brets are going to be stars of this show, the classic medieval feel is totally missing from AoS so it is an untapped flavour for GW. Anything which fits with the story of Bretonnia is going to be what they focus on and frankly the High Elves do fit with that story (though less so than the Wood Elves). I remember a time when Wood Elves would fight alongside Bretonnians quite regularly, that's how I got into this hobby.

Mordheim was set in 1999 iirc and WFB 3rd edition was 2512. The Age of Three Emperors was roughly 1500 to 2300. So Mordheim could have happened?

@@michaelstockin1636 For sure. 3 Emps Kicks off 1547, 1550 Crusades crescendo (taking lots of Knights from both Empire an Brettonia), Comet ~ 2000, and the Great War 2302. Lots to work with.

The whole Age of Wars era of no/two/three/four/five emperors lasted from c. 1150 IC to c. 2300 IC (which I just point out to highlight that the Empire was divided until reunification for pretty exactly as long as it had been united the first time), but TOW will be set toward the end of it, close to the Great War against Chaos, which presumably means a couple of decades, so they actually get something out of the civil war setting before diving into Magnus the Pious vs. Asavar Kul etc., but it might just be a few years, and almost certainly not a full century, let alone more. This is nothing new; they've confirmed this in an article many months ago, in which they wrote that they were excited to be able to explore the shifting fortunes in the leadup like they've done in THH. The comet hit Mordheim in 1999 IC, with the standard setting of the game between a few weeks and a few months after that. (Although it just as easily supports really any time later until Magnus the Pious burns down the ruins in 2302 IC, and there is also a special campaign that starts on literally the day after the impact. Also in 2302 IC, during the Great War against Chaos, the last baron of Marienburg/Westerland is slain. The province eventually secedes in 2429 IC.) Long story short, by the time period of TOW, Mordheim is already in ruins, so a revival of the eponymous game would be the perfect low-cost skirmish onramp for it.

If GW have any sense then Mordheim will be possible (they could make a lot of money with a new edition of Mordheim because it is the best game they have ever made). Albeit a fresher Mordheim (a bit more green fire).

The good news on that front is that Athel Loren is in the old world! I really hope so too!

I would not concider the old world, with living corpses, dragons, magic, real gods, elves(etc) as a low fantasy. It is not as High fantasy as AoS (luckily) but definetely not low fantasy.

I think we may move in that direction. I can forsee a rewrite of the end times... Eventually

Also, High Elves do have four colonies on the Bretonnian coast marked on the TOW map (and pointed out as such by at least one by now quite old WarCom article). And Dark Elves may not be on the map, but not having them raid the shores would feel silly, but I guess they could be delaying giving attention to them (and Norscan factions) until Asavar Kul's invasion actually kicks off.

I have about 10 6./7./8. Edition armies ( each about 4.500 pts 8. Equivalent) . I use some of them also for KoW and other rulesets. So I won't rebase anything at all, but will use regiment bases with appropriate dimension. On top I am building two new armies for TOW on the new basesizes. Especially my new Tomb-Kings and a Middenheim Army with a Wolf/Ulric Theme...

The rumours are 30x30 or 30x60. Shame it won't accommodate the 32mm round bases/adaptors

They are playing it safe. WHFB was killed off because it was not very successful in the end. I imagine they don't want to overinvest in what they consider a high risk project. Just like HH it started as a low investment side project and then when it became popular they upgraded it to a flagship level property. I expect TOW to be the same.

@@ryancooper3629 Fantasy died because GW never addressed its core issues - inconsistent updates and a barrier to entry that was too high. Fantasy was never going to be as big as 40k, but that doesn't mean it had to die. It needed a focus on smaller games and game modes that required few models. GW never really provided small scale options to help and encouraged new players enter or existing players expand. Edit: I should also mention that HH was a low risk play on GWs part, and a low risk investment on the part of players - so it could, and can, afford a slow start and update structure. Marines are the most popular faction in 40k, they're easy to paint, and you can use them as is for both 40k and HH. Unlike HH, TOW needs to the ground running and be firing on all cylinders. A wait and seek approach will only hurt it in the long run because it increases the likelihood that the core issues of Fantasy will go unaddressed.

Yes, it would have been a bold move and the way to attract Total War players.

I know nothing of the rules or lore for AoS. What turns me off is the the piss poor line. If you look at 40k, pretty much every army has a few dozen products listed on their website. If you look at AoS, most of the races only have about 2 dozen (I'm looking at races because the army structures for AoS are dumb and break up many traditional armies across multiple different armies. eg. There are apparently 3 Dwarf armies). Stylistically not fitting aside, I can't turn to the AoS range to get core units because they apparently don't exist. That means nothing I have is playable in AoS and very little from AoS is playable in Fantasy. There's simply no reason for me to pay attention to AoS, and again, that's before the significant rules and lore differences.

They said that new units from AoS that have never existed in whfb won't be written into The Old World (varrenguard, the specific example) but you can use the updated Saurus Warriors as Saurus Warriors.

Yeah, they talked about cross compatibility the other way around. "No one is stopping you using old world models as an equivalent in Age of Sigmar" so I'm sure it's the same the other way around.

I think it looks like a cool miniature but I agree that he looks much more rpg than battlefield ready plus the orc head will be a bit odd against most armies. Fingers crossed they will supply a different sword that doesn’t include the head but that seems unlikely

I mean if you don't like it cut off the sword and super-glue a new blade on! I think he's fun as a paladin who goes around and fights stuff.

@@catcadev Cause finding an exact match for that particular blade is gonna be so easy and patch up so clean. How about a plain sword and glue you own head around it if you want such . Everyone goes to battle with a lantern on your shoulder🙄

In general I would agree vehemently, but in this case it doesn't bother me much. A Bretonnian knight slaying one of many orcs roaming all over the place and parading its head into battle on his sword? I can totally see that. The clutter on his back he'd surely leave with his retinue, though, but it isn't that much, so I'm okay with it as well.

@@NineInchCharge hmm, maybe it’s just an option they haven’t revealed yet? GW is sometimes very specific for no reason in showing what you can actually build their minis. Even the Helbrecht mini I mentioned has no promo pics, without the ork, from GW themselves. Literally saw that option for the first time in the instruction Manuel 😂

Yeah.. I felt exactly the same and then they said it's armies "fighting in the old world" so if anyone invades they're included. Seems like they were just looking for a way to get Tomb Kings involved, I'm not complaining though!

The old world is the entire eastern landmass. The "new" world basically refers to Lustria (and I suppose Ulthuan etc) The Southlands and Badlands are Old World. Like how IRL the Americas were the New World.

I'd expect they focused on TK and Brettonia because they are the old discontinued armies with the loudest fanbasing crying for their return. (aka highest sales potential)

I think there is specific lore about the Tomb Kings invading Bretonnia because they pillaged Nehekhara during the crusades against Araby and took treasures back with them. A good thing about WFB is that every army book always had a full timeline and a long history of each faction with characters, so every era has pre-built lore they can delve into and some good characters. Of course a lot of total war players/game fans won't know this so it seems like it'll be very empty which is not the case.

Thanks Chris, being in an auditorium with 800 cheering Warhammer fans when they previewed those models was infections and really gets you buzzing for the hobby! I cannot wait now!

There's negativity because GW is fucking it up, total war warhammer released only a few years after they killed warhammer fantasy, that'd be like if Nintendo stopped selling Mario games and them put the mario movie into production, then you have the next level of fuckery, it took them until many years later to make a commitment to bringing it back, and now we are at the process of it's been years, and we've seen like 5 models total, 40k 10th edition is dropping (it was 8th edition when it was announced) and age of sigmar, the series that was dropped at the time of its death is in it's 3rd edition, to long a wait, to little shown off, most the news received has been bad, like not onboarding new total war players, and that they'll be releasing a mix of old and new models, at this point in time even if it got as much attention as 30k, which it won't, it'll be a decade before everyone got new sculpts for there army

Nah, Skaven have been around for a long time. In fact the last emperor was Mandred Skavenslayer - his assassination is what causes the imperial civil war that is the backdrop for tOW.

They are out and about during the time Period. I’m not sure there’s any documented big battles. But there are Dwarf holds here there and everywhere. So I think they could find room for some dwarf love.

They are. Gorbad is last seen fighting Dwarfs. The fight with Greenskins is so bad they have to seal some holds but there are also major Dwarf victories.

​@@NineInchCharge thank you. I only got into the hobby during AoS. There's still a lot I don't know about Old World lore. What are the factions that participated in the main events during the "Three Emperor" era? Probably the GW going to focus on these armies.

@@balazsfeher1016 Besides Bretonnia and Tomb Kings, they named the Empire, Orcs and Chaos. In the map they also appear Silvan Elves and High Elves. Dwarves are always present in the Old World. If they want to release Kislev, they also could.

The Dwarfs shared their knowledge of gunpowder with the Imperium during the (actual) age of Sigmar. Handgunners, cannons, and mortars I know were allready around during the great war against chaos. In fact I think the new time frame might actually involve the creation of the Steam Tank. One could argue that Volley Guns and Rocket Launchers might be too exotic for the age... but Im not sure theres any hard lore on when they were actually created.

Finubar is still the phoenix king and has re-established ties with the old world. Teclis is still around as are many others. Episode 13 of our old world podcast (which can be found on the channel) specifically goes into the lore of the high elves during the time the game is set. Given resources, I suspect they'll be making new models. While some of the AoS models can work (the Chaos Warriors look pretty spot on), others simply don't (the entire Dwarf range). Since people say AoS is supposed to be gonzo high fantasy, those aesthetics just don't fit with gothic old world Warhammer.

On Saturday it was a nightmare, queues everywhere and I left early because I just couldn't move. Sunday was much better, you could do everything you wanted I managed to play 2 games of AoS, got into all the seminars without having to queue too long, played some boltgun, had a couple rounds at the squigapult and I got to meet some very cool people in the hobby. If I were basing my experience purely on the Saturday it would have been much more negative.

Yes, she is effectively queen of the dark elves. Mother of Malekith, who you may know as malerion in AOS, shes the scheming manipulating leader of the dark elves war against the high elves, perhaps even higher than Malekith, general of the dark elves and her son.
