Julia's question is clearly designed to "gotcha" the politician by getting him to respond only from a biological definition. If I were a politician I would refuse to answer Julia as well.
@MGame That's not what I meant, but okay. So politicians have to be wary of saying certain things in interviews, on camera. They are PR people. They cannot come across as uncaring or out-of-touch, though many fail at this. But still, they have to be careful not to come across like they are margilising others. The biological question can easily be spun into a gotcha and the politicians can be made to look uncaring, and so politicians think it's much easier just to say nothing or act like they don't know.

No way! Physically, they will never be the same. It's not fair. If trans people have the same rights, then they have the right to compete with born women in sports and games, and they will always have an advantage. So no! You may feel like a woman, but you never will be.
Can someone explain what “feel like a woman” is like and how is it different from “feel like a man”? How do someone knows that feeling they feel is of a woman and not of a confused man?

As a societal question - People can identify how they want, and they can ask to be identified as they want, but that doesn't mean society at large will identify them as that. Even some Men who identify as Men won't be identified as Men by society at large. As a biological question - the answer is very straight forward.
Because people are advocating a biological essentialist position and either do not understand the distinction between gender identity and biological sex or they are just bigoted.

Julia is really loving this. We are in this "mess" because we are at last trying to recognise the transgender and transition people. There are only a few of them, very, very few, but some people (Julia) are loving blowing it up into a big battle - it's paying her wages. God bless her cotton socks.

Women's rights are under attack. Julia is one of few speaking about it. Trans people are trans people they are not the opposite sex. They have the right to dress, have surgery, behave however they wish but they have not changed their sex. In society we should all be polite but in reality as in law it must be based on facts not subjective feelings as it impacts a whole demographic: women. This is where the mess has come from.

It may be that word does not become meaningless but has to expand its meaning a bit every now and then. Words meanings change - inevitable.
