Understand that this is a TV show where Bird is basically the antagonist and seen from Magic's POV. Bird was an old-school competitor who would let everyone know that he was the big dog. If you google "Greatest NBA Trash Talker" you'll find him at #1 on most lists, yet he was reserved off the court. Not many people actually knew him. If this show makes it to 1986 and that Converse commercial shot in French Lick where Bird invited Magic to lunch at his mother's house, you'll get the other side of him.
I mean... Larry was cold-blooded, but he was also a little more jovial than they portrayed him. He talked shit, but he had fun with it, and he LOVED when someone took the bait and started busting their ass to beat him. I still love the character, though.
Personally, I would have rather watched a Winning Time series dedicated to Larry Bird and the Celtics. To me, Larry Bird’s back story is infinitely more compelling and Shakespearean than Magic’s story.
And his injury and slow decline over the second half of his career... and the way he still dragged himself up and down the court to get the Celtics into the playoffs year after year... would have fit right into that Shakespearean epic.
He’s a lifelong Lakers fan I fucking love Larry Bird. He brought the best out of us and anybody to talk shit about Larry Bird. Don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about.
No, it sucked Larry Bird was much taller. Kareem was played by a 6ft 9 or 10 guy lol. Larry looks like a short psycho version of himself and they portray people in a bad light in an over-the-top way. I was disappointed that they did it that way. I was around in these times and this is the worst bio-type series I have ever seen. They make excuses for Magic left and right and never admit that he lost to the Celtics because they had a better team at that time and Larry was the better all-around player period.
Bird was never underrated. From 1984-to-1986 Larry Legend was considered the best basketball player in the game. Michael Jordan's 63-points game 2 performance against the Boston Celtics in the 1st. round of the 1986 Playoffs represented the future superstar of the NBA.
This synopsis glosses over Bird going to Indiana University and playing under Bobby Knight. Bird quit the team in frustration with Knight, and then took the next year off working odd jobs. It is true Indiana State came to him and gave him another shot. Rest is history and the amazing story of Larry Legend. I saw all of this going on in my late teens and twenties. Always loved it when Boston beat LA, my favorite games to watch.
I think they nailed Bird. Acting and demeanor. Bird was an introverted awkward guy since childhood especially after his father's suicide. Sure we know bird was relaxed but to his opponents... he was ruthless. He even admitted he was pretty antagonistic towards Magic. So pissed this show got canceled.
It got cancelled? Wtf! Looks like this is gonna join that long list of great shows that got cancelled way too early. Dammit i hate how great shows get canned but then other shows that are mediocre will somehow run for like 10 seasons
They didn't nail Bird's demeanor at all. He wasn't an angry, uptight miserable prick. Although he was laser-focused, he was also jovial. He enjoyed the rivalries and the give-and-take on the court. BUT.... this show is from Magic's perspective, so that may well be how he saw Bird at that time.
Bird was insane. He's such a humble old man now that you would have never known it but he was absolutely a monster and I'm telling you this as a lifetime diehard Laker fan...i admire and respect the hell out of Larry Bird. I'll even say this...ill take Larry Legend for ten years over lebron for 20.
I get its made for TV but come on. They made Magic look almost schizophrenic. They both state during that time that they respected each other even though they weren't friends. In this it sounds like Larry Bird is an asshole for assholes sake which he isnt. Most NBA players who played against him describe his trash talk as low, quiet and matter of factly. "I'm gonna go over to this corner for a jumper and it better not touch the rim, if it does I'm gonna come right back here and do it again." This imagining of Bird seems like hes always angry.
Beta white male fantasy. Magic didn't give TWO shits about Bird. My favorite Magic moment was after the Lakers put their foot on the Celtics ass in Game 6 of the 1985 title and were celebrating in Boston, Brent Musberger came to interview Magic. Magic gave him the smile and he went away, but the camera stayed on Magic and he started making a circular motion with his finger on his head "that clown is crazy".
Thing I like about Larry Bird's life specially getting into College is it's so relatable to my life. Lot's of tragedy and struggle, refusing the call to greatness at first but then finding it within himself to try again. Very inspirational.
When it's your show and somehow Larry Legend sneaks in and steal the limelight. This is how legendary Larry is breaking the 4th wall by getting inside Magic's fans as well. Imagine watching this as big Magic fan and then Larry Legend creeps in like a freaking nightmare. Damn!
Yes I always saw Bird measured at 6'10..Magic 6'9....People forget how big Larry actually was.I was watching an interview with ex NBA player Jamal Mashburn.Played PF with the Mavericks/Heat during his career. He was part of a college All Star team that got to scrimmage against the Dream Team in '92.He said the first thing that shocked him was how big Bird actually was in person.I believe Mashburn was 6'8.Bird was really about the same height as Nikola Jokic.Just quicker & more fluid.
I like the way they did Bird as an asshole, which he was, but he was a lot more playful about it. But the dude playing Larry really knocked it out of the park
As a frustrated NY Knicks fan back in the 1980's, I'm glad on the depiction of Larry Bird in this series. I haven't watched the series yet because I'm aware that it's based on true events and some of the series is a bit fabricated. But Larry 1st, and then Julius Erving were my favorite players growing up. I don't care what today's fans think of today's GOAT conversations. I won't argue about Michael Jordan and LeBron James because those great players have amazing stats. But Larry Legend and Dr. J will always be my guys. And I revere Earvin Magic Johnson, Kareem and the other Lakers, but I was an east coast fan at heart. I always say this from other forums on RU-vid, the 1981 & 1982 Eastern Conference Finals were the best back-to-back 7 game series I've ever watched. The 1981 ECF by itself is considered the best 7 game series in NBA history to this day. I never get bored rewatching those series.

Couldn't agree more. 1981 Larry Bird was a BEAST. People remember Bird as a trash talking jump shooter, but Bird began his career as a no nonsense interior BANGER. Ine the first half of that 1981 series,he was tossing the Sixers big men around like rag dolls.
Absolutely Celtics down 3 to 1. Then the Celtics earned the Blue Collar Badge of Honor and win 3 in a row. The 88 Eastern Conference Finals are a close second. Bird with Bronchial Pneumonia, bad feet and back brings the Celtics back in the fourth to win game seven. Bird just willed it.
bird never trash talked in a nasty manner. He almost always had a smile on his face too. None of this shit happened the way it is portrayed. Just go ask larry and magic
Bird was portrayed in a goofy manner. He was a likeable but competitive confident guy. They portray him here as an asshole like the bad guy in real life he was a good hard-working small-town guy with good values and dedication. It was insulting the way he was portrayed and it was very biased so I stopped watching. I hope they make a Celtics blue-collar time TV series that gives Magic and the Lakers a taste of their own medicine.
The thing i will always love and respect about bird as a black man is he never bought in to the white Jesus stuff, and he never saw race and he didn't try to "fit in with the Brothas". He was just who he was a bad ass basketball player who was a hick from french lick.
This actor's presence is eeiry how much he not only captures how Larry Legend look, how he talk, move around, but his entire essence. It look less like an actor playing him than they did a deep-fake it so spot-on. The rest of the cast look like what it is: actors doing a reenactment of real life events, but the Larry stand-in don't seem like a body double. It look like they digitally inserted actual documentary footage of Larry Bird into the existing shot scenes of the movie with the lookalikes from set.
This is a decent portrayal of a Bird from the perspective of your typical Laker fan. You have to remember there was no social media back then, no podcasts for players to get comfortable and show a little bit of who they are. Bird early on was incredibly shy and awkward and sometimes that made him come off prickly.
Both Magic and Bird did not act like this, although these actors copied their look pretty damn well. Bird was not that angry, Magic didnt cuss like that, they didnt trash talk each other with that kind of anger it was much more respectful from both sides. I dont like how this made both of these guys look.
If you watched the first season when Magic made it to the finals the first time they had bird watching the series from Indiana with his brothers were using racial slurs. From what Magic really said, is that his family loved him in real life.
I just saw a snip of Bird and MJ from mid to late 90s they were both cursing like sailors at each other, it was hilarious it was in a brotherly love place though not hateful but you can tell there's alot respect between those two ,but any way , I kind of believe Bird let the words fly on the court and a little off too
@@derekbeck9124 nope sorry.....The lakers may have averaged more points but the Celtics were more efficient each trip down the floor. When you play up and down constantly for 48 minutes you are going to have more scoring opportunities which is why the Lakers averaged more points than the Celtics during that
Some advice - when you post a video entitled, "Every Time Bird Trash Talked and Got into Magic's Head on 'Winning Time,'" people are going to click on your video to watch those scenes. People do not need to hear your commentary as well. With you talking constantly, it leads people to believe that you manipulated others, who just want to watch the scenes, to listen to your talking. People who watch clips from this show have either (1) already watched this show and would like to watch clips again OR (2) They would like to watch some scenes due to convenience. In other words, your commentary in this video is unnecessary and EXCESSIVE!
Complete bullshit..Larry was playing the black waiters at the hotel when he was 11/ 12 yrs old..he'd get right off the bus and wait till they went on their break
Magic didn't give TWO SHITS about Bird and whipped him in college and whipped him in the NBA. The entire Bird bandwagon just flipped over to Michael Jordan. In this racist FANTASY, Bird is still "badass" while getting his ass handed to him.
You must have not heard Bird's Hall of Fame speech. He was the one who had Magic in his head, and said so, too. Why would Magic CARE about Bird in 1982?He had owned Bird Everytime they had met and had won two titles and had two Final MVPs by his 3rd season while Bird wasn't even the FMBP the one time the Celtics won.
@@TrumpFanNetwork2 I know but it's unnecessary,I'm sure it's exaggerated. People in real life don't curse every other word unless they re lowlifes from Staten Island. I don't think Bird was as nasty as they depict him
@@bornresaabe I agree I just don't think he was as malicious as he was made out to be,also they exaggerated how much he smoked cigarettes. He was much more conscious about his health. They make him out to be a white trash hick,he was actually intelligent and well spoken and certainly not a republican
@@mattveteska8559 no doubt man everyones character is exaggerated a bit, some more so. Regardless, it's a great show very entertaining and the script is fantastic.
