The production of this video is INSANE. Just think of the capturing, cataloging and editing in sync'd footage + music for ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY EIGHT GAMES! And 1:56 shout-out to the high quality 3D custom transition! A winner is you 💚
@@montefisto omg if that would be the case for leaving... how epic. A middle-aged man abandoning his youtube career for his never taking off rap thing...
hate to say it but i think the channel has become more refined and production value has increased since Dave. Joe might have a more streamlined workflow now. Though I will always miss they're extremely awkward inability to interact naturally in front of a camera
I'm so stoked you're still giving the Turbo love as you have from the start, and still bringing attention to it after all these years. Can't imagine the gargantuan task of doing every game for this video, mad props on making that happen. You've seriously made me consider doing something like it, only for all PC Engine Shooters reviewed. Not too far off from the total amount of Turbo games 😂 If I do I'll definitely give your video here a shout out as inspiration for the idea.
Great video, Joe. The hard work put into it is obvious. Game Sack and Sega Lord X have to be my two favorite gaming channels. Thanks for being awesome, man.
A fun bit of trivia is that the TurboGrafix-16's prototype name was the C62 (which is the name of the development kit and the reason for the Hu-62 chip.) The C62 is a Japanese steam locomotive class. In fact, the C62's wheel arrangement (4-6-4 "Hudson type") is the namesake of Hudson Soft. The founders of Hudson liked trains.
I literally just watched the 1st episode where you originally reviewed the turbo which also happened to be the 1st time you reviewed a console literally like 3 minutes ago and now this wow. Joe you're amazing you deserve 100 million subs for all your hard work.
Hell yeah, been looking forward to more TGFX/PCE coverage here. I recently first played it a couple years back when I got my MiSTer setup initially. Was the first core I loaded, into a library almost completely alien to me.. and damn I was blown away. Perhaps the most underrated console in the west.
I'm in the UK so don't really know a whole lot about the Turbo but your vids have really gotten me interested. I decided to go back 10 years and watch your first vid on the subject to give me some ideas, then back 6 years to your second... Now I see just a matter of months ago you've gone and rolled out the entire catalogue. Wow! You've given me a lot of inspiration for games and gotten me really interested in this system. Hats off to you Joe, GameSack has been an amazing watch for over a decade. Been watching you from the start and you've never failed to bring an entertaining, interesting and fun video our way.
Game Sack is really on fire in 2021! The Master System episode was one of the best ever and now this! You should do the Saturn and the Genesis too, Joe.
According to a Nintendo Life article published this year, the reason Street Fighter was named Fighting Street on the TG16 is that Namco owns the trademark for the phrase "Street Fighter". They provide evidence for this, and say that Capcom had to pay Namco for the right to use the name.
Yeah, I’m kinda shocked by how many terrible ones there are. I guess I’m more familiar with the library when taking into consideration the PCE titles. Still love the TG16 though!
he prolly hate it cause its not his precious super castlevania 4 bleh game is so fuckin dumb and over rated now rondo of blood and bloodlines and symphony of the night theres some real castlevania games
That's around 660 games. I've played at least a bit of all of them, and it would be way more work than its worth. There are about 200 JP-only PCE games worth playing for non-Japanese speakers. Many more if you read JP, including many of the close to 100 jrpgs that never got an official translation.
OH, YEAH, I ALMOST FORGOT, MY GANJA SMOKING IS THE MOST IMPORTANT AND INTERESTING ORIGINAL PART OF MY PERSONALITY. ALSO I HAVE A BEARD SO I AM A BEAR. ROAR! WHO WANTS TO WRESTLE ?!
I honestly find that console to be great for it's time. I rarely saw any sprite flicker in the review, and something about the colors make it stand out. I need to grab one now. Keep up the great work Joe!
Really solid series of reviews! Though I will disagree on Parasol stars only being fun for a few minutes, I only got my copy a few months ago and I've plugged more time into it than anything else on turbo. Finding hidden items for extra continues and the puzzle solving elements in later worlds make it super addictive, and there's the whole miracle system to figure out in order to unlock the hidden worlds. It's also one of the only games Working Designs didn't do anything to localizing it, so it's just as fun on a US copy as a Japanese one!
I feel thats on of the beauties of this media and art form we all appreciate. One person's boredom is another person's treasure and that is perfectly ok! 👌
@@rickylovesyou Perhaps. I think the simpler explanation is "didn't bother playing for more than two or three minutes". Parasol Stars exudes quality from the moment you turn it on.
@@ratspike8017 Parasol Stars was also released on the Atari ST, which is what I had. And though the scrolling was more like a flip book, it was still completely playable and lovely! I'm also a big fan! 💖
fantastic video!! something so thorough as this is a masterwork. a fantastic starting point for those looking for a complete log of the tg16s titles. thank you so much for all the work youve put in!! (P.S. lovin the tiny jo at 13:14 )
It didn't feel like there were all that many SNES games. I owned well over 100 NES games but didn't even surpass 30 on its successor. A $60 price point in the early 90's was prohibitive so maybe that's why.
@@PickleRick91x It's so odd, because I don't recall seeing that many offerings at stores. It was all about some key titles like Street Fighter 2, Pilot Wings, F-Zero etc.
Interesting thing about Crater Maze, it's effectively an adaptation of the Japanese game "Heiankyo Alien," one of the first Japanese arcade games, and possibly the game to inspire the digging mechanic in games like Lode Runner
For sure one of the smartest things you can do when getting into this system is to just import a PC Engine & buy the Japanese versions of these games. Most of them don't hardly have any Japanese text if any at all, and the game library over there was indeed much better. Or just get yourself a Turbo Everdrive which works on any region system and plays games from any region!
Just about to sleep and this pops up. Guess I'll sleep after this. I hope there's more like the fm towns Marty, PS1 and PS3 lmao 🤣🤣 that's a huge library though
Love seeing the original PC Engine composite palette in action. In a way you were better off holding off on going through a library deep-dive for so long, so you could show off these games with their original look. It's very rare I find a game that looks better with the RAW RGB values. Street Fighter II CE is the only one I like that comes to mind.
Wow! I have followed and watched Spida1a ‘s Turbografix 16 full collection reviews and loved them. It is crazy to see his 14 year project be done in one video. Great video Joe! I do recommend anyone who hasn’t seen Spida1a reviews to check them out as well! They are great little fun videos and he reviews every game in the set along with some PC Engine stuff.
Got a TurboGrafx back in like 2005 from a guy at work for $100. Had a few games. I didn't start to collect and appreciate this console until I started watching Game Sack a few years ago. Thanks Joe! And to a lesser extent, Dave.
I've been watching your show for years and this was among the best ever episodes. I knew I would love it going in - I've always been fascinated by the turbo because we didn't get it in the UK, and the 16 bit gen was the one I really got involved in back in the day. Your production values are A+ and the effort you have put in on this and the previous Master System episode shines through. Thank you for this and putting it out Sunday morning when I'm looking for something just like this to watch.
What an amazing project this was. I can only imagine the countless hours it took to play, record, dub, and edit this monster video. I was thoroughly entertained and now wanna check out a few of the shooters for myself. Hats off to you Joe!
Damn, this is impressive. This might be your craziest video so far and that's really saying something. Just missing a stop motion segment. Loved this so much!
tricky kick is very fun if you play it with a friend who’s into puzzles. you take a turn, they take a turn, etc. and collaborate on ideas to solve the level. it’s such a feeling of accomplishment to be the one to finally solve a level after 40 minutes of trying. it can be very fun played this way!
“w” is often used in Japan as shorthand for “double”, e.g. extra large bags of chips. It’s also used in Final Fantasy VII for W-Item, W-Summon materia, etc. Finally, on an unrelated note, “w” is also used as a shorthand for laughter in messages, similar to “lol”. Thanks for the great videos! Cheers! :)
Dragon Slayer looks great! How come Falcom, circa 1990, already knew how to make fast, tight JRPGs without the bloat, but so many other companies kept struggling to get the same stuff right? I want to play the game, not walk around in slow motion, or watch incredibly slow animations and text, or any other nonsense. Looks like these guys get it!
I did not experience a TG-16 growing up..my first experience is with the mini console they put out which has been a great time! Ys 1&2 and the shooters are my favorites! Dungeon Explorer has been a good time too!
Although these are all mini-reviews, they are so very well done that I don't think anyone could possibly complain. Besides, if they were too much longer the video would be ridiculously long. Quite frankly, I'm impressed by what you accomplished here. Great job, Joe! It's a shame that we only got such a small fraction of the games Japan got, but at least we still managed to get a decent number of great games. It would have been extremely interesting to see the TurboGrafx-16 on equal footing with the SNES and Genesis in a 3-way console war. It was intense enough just between Nintendo & Sega, so just imagine how crazy that would have been with NEC in the mix as well!
I just started playing PC engine CD-ROM games on my phone! Omg!!!! So much fun!!! It's like 16-bit games with CD quality audio and cut scenes!!! It's blowing my mind! I would have loved to own a PC engine cd back 1990! By the original or emulated either way you're going to have a great time
This console failed in USA because NEC did not bring over the top Titles from Japan. There were lots of games released in Japan that never made it to the USA
I highly disagree about MotoRoader. Playing with friends (switch handling to B!!) after you get upgraded is fun as hell. Many great memories with my bros and late non-gamer father.
