This is my dream school, I hope to go to the academy in 3 years to study aeronautics and become a tanker pilot. Love the various uniforms the cadets get to wear
Follow the money and department budgets. However much uniform providers can sell to USAFA or how much internal budget (=responsibility=career growth/salary boost) someone get for their department, they will reach for that.
I think it would be really cool if all of the big military academies and maritime academies were able to come together and compare different uniforms, how they work, and when they wear them
@@kellychuba I’m at Texas maritime. Freshman year we didn’t get khakis until the spring semester because of a shortage, and we don’t wear whites at all we wear S&P for formal events
In the Army we used those ankle pockets for tourniquets and other medical items, the left arm of the OCP's is designed for pens. I suppose each branch has their own SOP.
With the flight programs that most officers are involved in they are used to having notepads and pens in leg/thigh pockets, most active pilots even end up with knee boards(essentially wearable clipboards) in the aircraft. Medical usually ends up in vests. Security forces can be an exception however, and guys like pararescue are just scary
Army and Air Force OCP uniforms are identical. There are no pen pockets on the OCP pants, just the blouse.. Notice how he didn't even show them... because there are none. He probably got a little mixed up and he was referencing the old ABU uniform, which did used to have pen pockets near the ankles. As you could probably imagine there isn't too urgent of a need for cadets walking around campus to carry medical items and tourniquets. Most people never touch those pockets except to make sure they're buttoned for inspections.
Theyre all "issued" but then cost $13k and they deduct that out of your pay for 4 years, so the $1200 you make a month is actually like $400 with the clothing costs taken out
Wait, what?? Are you serious? Because if so, that's totally f-ed up! No way should they have to pay for the various uniforms that's required, esp when there's so many different ones.
Dang your service dress and uniforms are so much nicer than ours (Navy) lol I knew I should have joined the Air Force instead but the recruiter was literally never in the office 😆 so I didn't even get to have that conversation lol
you dont get recruited for the academies, you literally have to apply. and the navy academy uniforms are similar to to the air force academy uniform, especially the mess dress and parade dress.
@@lifesabeach5405 He's an officer, officers attend several social functions a year. Especially at one of the biggest academic institutions in the entire world....🙂🙂🙂🙂
Something to be careful about... You have to use a permanent ink stamp to mark your uniform. At least a couple cadets will mark their clothes in the wrong place, So everytime you are wearing the uniform you see the mistake. You can get gigged everytime.
Great overview. As an 82 grad, the least desirable piece of uniform were the heavily starched parade pants. They were awful and uncomfortable. I’m. Delighted they have been replaced with something wearable while you stand for two hours sweating on the parade ground.
So their service dress has pockets on the chest to help with the name tag. They changed that for active duty while I was in. We looked like flight attendants.
@@nameless9084 Man please!🤔🙄 they were bums and potheads hating on my youth and potential. Thank god I didn't listen. Im on my way to law school and about to buy more land.
It is very interesting. Although quite funny to see a cadet wearing ribbons for wars while he is at school. As if i was wearing a ribbon for fighting in Afghanistan and haven't been.
@FancySeeingYouHere not where im from. I've been in sea cadets and we can't wear ribbons for wars fought by other members of the Canadian Forces. Then again, the US is known for giving medals and ribbons just for attending basic training or just waking up in the morning.
I have my employment authorization document form I 797 im waiting for my greencard to be in the US Airforce , that way i can have a career i only have my junior highschool degrees with good level skills.
@@gabrielvera4672 no you have to do the german "marksmanship test" Schützenschnur, marching, swimmung and other trainigs have to be up to date like CBRN, Medic and so on
From a Marine, -Nothing bad but I’d love to hear his explanation of the “Advancingn Forward” American flag, I know a lot of Civillians don’t understand why it’s “Backwards” who are probably the Targeted Audience. -Why does a “Colonel” Cadet refer to their trousers as “Pants?” The Academy is all about Formalities, and the “Boss” (who I’m sure is certainly acting the part in private) messing this up? -Overall his explanation is as pretty great! PS: if I ever catch a cadet of any branch wearing evening dress with their Academy ranks, I’m hitting them with my car
Pretty sure when you get to Junior year, you officially commit to the obligatory service after graduation. If you signed up for this service during the GWOT, willing to join during a time of conflict, you get the medal.
yeah you never wear your blues in active duty. unless you're in deep shit. Never used the PT gear either unless for the yearly PFA. Bi-annual if you score below 90s.
yes but that's because you have to buy them when they are issued. most of them aren't going to ever be worn again. dress blues in the real air force are completely different from the academy. OCPs and Flight suit stay mainly the same though.
Its a nomination and appointment. Check out her high-school JROTC. They usually have a slot they can nominate. Otherwise it takes high grades, a lot of community service and a high ranking state official like a Gov. Or Senator to nominate you.
Talk to usafa recruiters. Your daughter should also get into contact with her congressman. This should be her job, finishing the long application is half of the process.
Did he really call the trousers of his camo uniform “pants”? My friends who attended West Point used to say “only women and Middies wear pants.” I guess you’d have to add USAFA cadets to that saying.
When is the Star fleet academy coming(I mean space force academy!) you stole the trek insignia so you may as well name the academy after it. It should have its own academy if it’s own Branch.
Besides OCPs the rest is pretty trashy 😂 I’m a Army Vet. Anyone else love getting dressed up sweating your Ballz off standing in formation for hours just because?
Why do american military personnel get medals while still in training? I know of other militarys that just award medals for 10+ years service and overseas service.
Time at the service academies counts as time in service so those service ribbons or medals that are awarded after a certain time in service or completion of certain service activities can be awarded.
Former cadet here. We need to pay out of pocket for our uniforms. Some like the flight suit and overcoat is loaned to us and we wash and then return it at the end of our time at the academy.
The uniform cost is probably the last thing you need to worry about your tax money going to regarding the “defense” budget. Plus pretty sure officers don’t get an uniform allowance.
@@imadeanaccounttocomment7800 Yep, $200-300 per uniform should be the last of the worries for the military penny pinchers. It's about creating culture, discipline and camaraderie. Is our military spending excessive? Maybe. But pointing out uniforms as the cause of that excessiveness is naive and borderline idiotic.
