It's really hard to get a comment from me but you deserve me to say this: I am not a photographer neither a videographer but an influencer (on instagram), and i have to say that this is the most complete video that can educate a pro and a debutant about lighting at the same time. That's pretty clear, simple and she use easy and simple words for those who don't have english as a mother language. I will be follow your work for more education. Thank you
I appreciate you taking the time to comment and share, thank you very much! I aim to make things as simple as possible, so I've very happy it's doing just that. :D Welcome to the channel
Very helpful video. Succinct and contains just the right amount of details without being too verbose. Quick and polished presentation style. Thank you! 👏
what a helpful video! thank you very much, especially for the b roll examples in the end! it was inspiring seeing and listening to how you shaped the story and it somehow reminds me of a L.A. Noire / Mafia detective setting.
Literally your video is a god sent!! I was confused of what modifier is what n what to use for my upcoming project... thank you for the detailed video.
Great video! You could also use a spotlight mount as a fancy fresnel. Which, I could see doing as the built-in fresnel on an Arri seems to work much better than the add-on fresnels above or on my units. Next video is about steel scrims, silks, flags, cookies and 4x4s, right?😉🙋
Dang! i hit gold today with your vids coming into my YT suggestions feed 🙌🏼🙌🏼👍🏼 💃🏻woot! i left a msg on your older vid that was done about a yr ago and now this one i am looking into purchasing one of these optical snoot & or projector so viewing these back to back is a score, both your vids are done are fantastic!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼💪🏼💪🏼🌟🌟🌟 i see you use constant LED lights w/these gear pieces and my question on other vid was asking if regular strobes work fine w/these ?? or best to use constant? also LED Power 60, 90, 150 for smaller home studio size space thank you!!! SUB’d !!👊🏼💥
So glad you found the channel! :D Happy to have you. I've seen folks use these modifiers on strobes, so that shouldn't be a problem at all. And for a small home studio a 60w light does just fine if you have the sunlight blocked out of the room. For medium or larger OR if you have sunlight to combat, you'll need a minimum of 100w, 200w would be better.
Hi fellow filmmakers, I saw you put Fresnel in front of the Amaran 60x that was the answer I was trying to find out on the internet for last 2weeks. No one confirms it will work with Amaran or not, only LS60 series. Do you think it just functions normal when using with amaran 60x? Is Aputure fresnel new version best choice for amaran 60x light? There are nanlite and Godox Fresnel too
I just tested it for you with the Aputure fresnel 2x and the Godox FLS10. The Godox performed better and looked more like a fresnel should. While the aputure had barely any affect on it at all and did not behave like a fresnel should. So, for that, I'd say the godox fresnel is better based on my quick testing: amzn.to/3dKSAQA
I am interested in the spotlight but they do not sell it with the iris, it is sold separately but I cannot find it in any store, could you help me where I can get it? Thank you very much and congratulations for your videos.
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! :D I'm using a parabolic softbox for my keylight, and just a reflector for my backlight. I also have a tube light for a hair light. You can see my setup in my studio tour video on the channel if you want to understand it all better :D If you're curious which lights I'm working with as well those are in the studio tour video as well
@@FellowFilmmaker Thank you so much! I recently purchased your Product Video PRO course. Really great. The first video on "What is Product Video" is worth the price of the course.
Thank you a lot for this video!!! Really helped me to understand the different light modifiers. Currently I am filming many stand-up comedy shows in different locations and what I have found out is that most of the venues have terrible lighting (Some random RGB party lights pointing to the stage) and my footage is not consistent because of this. I was thinking of buying SmallRig RC120D COB light and Fresnel to simulate spotlight in any place. Do you think that this is good idea? What I need is portable COB (easy to travel with) and some modifier to concentrate the beam to the stage but wide enough to not require an operator. Another option i guess is 2 led panels right on the stage lighting the performer from both sides Again, thank you a lot for what you are doing. Really big fan here : ) P.S. Searching for a budget options because I am working on a self-invested documentary
Both of those are good ideas. It's hard to say which will work best because distance to the subject will always matter and what kind of look it is you're wanting. The fresnel option might make alot of sense as it could be placed a bit further of a distance to get the look you're after.
which light do you recommend for any of these? i currently have a projection unit with an SL-60. not suer if i should get a stronger light or get a spotlight unit. thank you.
I'd say you might need to upgrade your light to a brighter one if you feel you don't have alot of power. 60w can be great for some things, but if you need really bright stuff you'll want a brighter light. But as explained in the video, the projection will detract intensity, so if you don't want to buy a new light AND a spotlight mount, I'd go with spotlight mount as you'll get more out of it all around.
You should be able to, unless there is a big jut out on your flashes. Each item has different measurements before a bulb might touch, so it's hard to say for sure.
I had to subscribe just from the quality and lighting of this video and how you light each product to show its details, I’d like to learn how your setup looks like, and the audio is clean 😩👌🏾👌🏾. Specs of each snoot? Perfectly explained
I enjoy the form and function of your videos. Helpful, fun, and informative. I’m currently setting up my first studio and you have been a big help with your videos. So if you ever need a sign to keep going, here it is!!! XD
That's Really good. After looking at the comparison table of the modifiers, looks like the snoot looses a lot of light (no reflection parts inside). Would it be still useful to create hair light from somthing like Amaron 60d (60W led) from a distance of 1-2 meter? I need to avoid light spill as I have only a room with white walls, white ceiling.
Spotlight mount is the way to go, you can turn down the brightness if needed with the added light intensity. Better to have more light than to need more.
This video was simply fantastic. So much useful information. I need to step up my RU-vid game haha Thanks for the video exactly what I was looking for.
Exactly the video I needed. thank you very much!! It's so hard to make a choice tho... I think I will go for the Fresnel plus some kind of cardboard with creative cuts in it to use them as gobos. I think that may be the cheapest option and you can do almost everything. Obviously, a spotlight would take less space but you can't have everything for cheap
If you want creative effects at a decent price you could do an optical snoot, I linked a cheap one Or if you want intensity you can use what they call cookies (cucoloris)
@@FellowFilmmaker Right! Cookies is what I meant. those can be DIY and combined with the fresnel, it can be a good (but bulky) solution. I really like the spotlight tho, but it's a bit expensive with all the accessories.
I will probably never buy one,… but I watched the video anyway because you’re a very likeable person. 😉 I would like a video about lenses for video. Why is T value better than F for video, when should I use an anamorphic lens?
Wow thank you so much. I’ve been searching for days on end to find what modifiers fit the Amaran 60d / 60x and this just cleared everything up. My question is what would you recommend for hard light creative product photography for jewellery items? I am thinking of buying an Amaran 60x but I still don’t know what would be good as a modifier to create window lighting effect on large ish jewellery items that I make. Any help is greatly appreciated
so glad I could help! If you're in a controlled environment you might be able to get away with a 60x. If you want to fake window light you could use a fresnel or spotlight mount, both would be great for that.
Truly one the most helpful and amazing video. I have a question that has never been answer, so is it possible if I use an optical snoot other than godox brand on a godox flash light?
Glad you found it helpful You can use any modifier on most any light or strobe as long as it's a bowens mount. There are many photographers who use all sorts of tools, not just brand tools.
I like a variety of hard light. Fresnel is nice and a spotlight mount is super handy too for all sorts of creative work. I use a snoot here and there too
Love the video, thank you so much. Just one suggestion: if you could have included the readings of the same light without any modifiers, that would have been great. It would help in understanding the comparison and evaluating how much of a difference or improvement there is with and without the modifier.
Thank you for taking the time to measure the LUX reading of every light at 5:45! Just curious, what is the original LUX reading of the light without any modifer, or maybe just with the standard reflector it comes with?
I don't recall what they are, but they are significantly less since the light is not controlled and spills everywhere. For standard reflector you can find those readings usually on B&H under the Specs section of the light. They tend to be fairly accurate
@@FellowFilmmaker i wanted a hard light hitting my subjects and thought I needed a optical snoot or a projector mount. Thanks to you I’ve learnt that all I need is a fresnel. Thanks again for the help, love your channel ❤️
Hey Heather, I'm interested in an optical snoot. Actually, I'm doing product reviews and would like a nice spotlight on the brand name on the product. I figure I'd go with an optical snoot...but it looks like I have to buy a light, and then the attachment? Do you know of something that will just get me a spotlight? Big fan of yours: you were the first person I thought of when I discovered the product name wasn't very visible on my product. If you have a product link which will give you a kickback, I'd really love to be able to do that. You've done a lot to help me!
@@FellowFilmmaker Yes, wondering why I even bought a fresnel. Reminds me of your recent gimbal video. Thankfully, haven't bought a gimbal :). yet.. Cheers.
wow 25k subs, you really been killing it... Well done... Loving it, it's so aspirational watching someone who started around the same time as me grow and kill it. Makes me really think what have I been sitting on. I've found my grove and now just changing my branding to my original name on here and the subs are just coming in. I just need more content, whoever says RU-vid is dead doesn't know what they are talking about.
As I mentioned in the video, the projection detracts light intensity as it passes through. The glass it not a magnifier of light but rather just plain glass. So in doing so it scatters more of the light than concentrating it. For a snoot there is loss by simply only allowing a portion of light through, and that it is not reflecting the light inside. It's totally black therefore it is subtracting light. You can see all the differences with the meter but also visually in person. :D Hope that helps
@@FellowFilmmaker simple snoop yes, i thought optical snoot will concentrate light more like fresnel lens :) thank you. So for optical snoot you need powerful led, or use it in very dark light :(
Earned a subscriber! amazing video! I have one question what modifier would you say is more useful for filming events such as birthday parties, engagement dinners , babyshowers etc ? Im thinking of getting an amaran 60d and using one of these modifiers
It depends on what purpose you would need it for really. But likely if you need a brighter light then something like a fresnel might be useful, it'll create a great backlight or rim light
