Most people would say Windows XP has the best starting sound but for me personally the Windows 95 startup sound is way more nostalgic and will always have a place in my heart

Sonically, the Windows 95 and OG Playstation startups really were indicative of the start of a new era in tech. Those sound designers really knocked it out of the park. 👌🏼

It's been over 20 years, and Windows 98's startup sound still makes me panic and reach out for the volume down switch.

I was born in 1989. XP and Vista will be forever remind me if my child hood and teen age years. It shaped my thinking and feelings on a blank slate. Today… I’ve realized how destructive and wonderful tech can be.

Amazing. Hearing the Windows 2000 (ME), XP and Vista sounds, I vividly recall the excitement I felt when I upgraded to each of them. Back then, installing a new OS felt much like getting your hands on shiny new tech. Those were some fun times.

Brian Eno actually composed the Windows 95 startup sound; (from Wikipedia) In an interview with Joel Selvin in the San Francisco Chronicle he said- The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on my own music for a while and was quite lost, actually. And I really appreciated someone coming along and saying, "Here's a specific problem - solve it." The thing from the agency said, "We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah-blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional," this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said "and it must be 3+1⁄4 seconds long." I thought this was so funny and an amazing thought to actually try to make a little piece of music. It's like making a tiny little jewel." In fact, I made eighty-four pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work. Then when I'd finished that and I went back to working with pieces that were like three minutes long, it seemed like oceans of time." Eno shed further light on the composition of the sound on the BBC Radio 4 show The Museum of Curiosity, admitting that he created it using a Macintosh computer, stating "I wrote it on a Mac. I've never used a PC in my life; I don't like them."

I knew several of these, and a few are nostalgic for me, but the best for its time was definitely Windows XP. I remember the first time I heard all those grand, sweeping symphonic melodies, and just feeling wowed by the whole experience (it may have helped that this was my first computer of my own, and it had amazing speakers).

As a Windows user myself, I want to make a few corrections: 1. There were no startup or shutdown sounds before Windows 3.1 2. Windows 2000 used the same startup and shutdown sound as Windows ME. The startup sound for Windows 2000 shown here is the one used in the Beta. 3. All builds of Longhorn used XP sounds until Vista RTM. 4. Windows 8 and Windows 10 do not have their own startup sounds. You can enable a startup sound through the control panel. The sound that can be enabled is the Windows Vista/7 startup sound.

Windows XP and 7 are by far the best windows OS to ever exist, not to mention the most nostalgic. I remember I was able to get the Windows XP startup sound on my windows 10 laptop, it was hilarious too.

7 And vista will always hold a special place in my heart. My mom has one that used to run 7 and I loved that sound.

The sounds used in this part of the video are actually from a royalty-free custom sound scheme made back in the early 2000s by NEOsounds called the Deep Fantasy Sound Scheme, which was used in several unofficial Longhorn- and Vista-style themes for Windows XP.

Windows Vista and 7 sounds are my childhood, because we had those in school. When I was leaving highschool, they had mostly upgraded the desktops with Windows 7 to Windows 10, then quickly jumped to Windows 11.

I think everything boils down to childhood memories and ms windows covering a great portion of our nostalgic sentiment since it spans more than 35 years of home computing. There are fans of every single build, be it 3.1, 95 (especially me), XP... Of course the accesibility of an average user increased drastically over decades, so it is normal to have a higher number of XP fans compared to other editions. In my case, back in the days of Windows 3.1, that operating system were majorly available in computer labs, whereas Win95 made the first major entrance to average households. In my opinion, Windows 95 holds all my teenage memories (yes I am 42 at the moment), and no sound beats the sounds of 95.

I remember my family had these old computers and remembering the windows Vista when I was 6 years old or so playing bejeweled 2, purble place, cake mania and more on those and I'm 19 now and this brings back a lot of early memories and recently we had gotten rid of them when we were cleaning our house and we've not used those computers in years

Those Windows 2000 sounds were actually used in the beta builds 1946-1969. The RTM version used the same sounds as ME.

Aww Windows Me! I had almost forgotten that startup sound, but it brings back a flood of memories! For me, that's the most nostalgic. Also definitely a place in my heart for the Windows 95 shutdown, imo the best of the shutdowns.

The Windows 98 sound gives me this feeling of joy every time I hear it, not because I grew up with it (and believe me, I didn't lol) but because I built a Windows 98 PC to experience the time period. Other kids my age play Forknife in their pastime or talk about the latest RTX graphics card, I like building old 90's PCs. It's just something that interests me lol

I grew up with the Windows 95 sound (because that's what my elementary school's computers had) so that's my favorite, but man Windows XP is an EXTREMELY close 2nd. I see why that's a lot of people's favorite, but for me, the Win95 startup sound just screams childhood to me. Just reminds me of being a child and having a sense of wonder about the world.

A few mistakes: Windows versions from 1.01 to 3.0 didn't have a startup or shutdown sound. The WAV file format wasn't around until the early 1990s. The first version of Windows to include a startup sound was Windows 3.0 with Multimedia Extensions, released in 1991. Windows 2000 sounds are incorrect. The sounds you included for it were actually used in beta builds of 2000 from 1946 to 1969. No build of Windows Longhorn ever used or even included those sounds. It used XP sounds up to build 5840, when they were replaced with Vista RTM sounds. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 did have a startup and shutdown sound, but both were hidden by default. When enabled, they were identical to the Windows Vista/7 sounds. In versions of Windows 10 from 1607 onwards, you could no longer change them without hacking the registry.

I'll never forget Windows 7 or its startup sound. That was the first OS I ever used when my mom got our first computer back in 2009 or 2010. I was 3-4 years old at the time when this happened.
