ToTK is getting closer to a perfect blend between open ended dungeon design and traditional Zelda. I thought the best example of this mix was The Lightning Temple, and I wish the other dungeons were more indoors so that the atmosphere could be heightened and the puzzles couldn’t be cheesed.

@@frewtlewps1152that’s what i was hoping and expecting to see from totk. I assumed they would’ve learned from botw and given us a good 30-40 actual mini dungeons with unique settings lore and music instead of 120+ cookie cutter shrines, but instead we just got shrines again, and for what they’re worth, caves. as awesome as the new mechanics are, I really wish they focused more on making the world feel unique and fresh again. this has gotta be the last game set in this hyrule for a while imo.

The Water Temple really feels like four shrines stuck together. Colgera is a really good early-game boss cuz it's mostly spectacle, and the most Divine Beast-esque design makes it feel more familiar to Breath of the Wild players. Queen Gibdo is my favorite boss in the game, easily, but I kept finding myself wishing the Lightning Temple was the Arbiter's Grounds; I felt like the lore the Lightning Temple just didn't measure up to the other dungeons.

I personally had the feeling that all the dungeons are a little bit to short, although if you add the previous quests to reach the dungeons, the time adds up. That being said, I agree with your ranking. I hope that they work on the dungeons for a next Zelda, to have them even longer an with more variety between the in-dungeon quest. It was essentially the same for all main dungeons - "use the power of the sage on objectives"

i always treat the leadup to the temple as part of it, it's all one big quest as far as using the sage's powers, that's basically how it's been since link to the past -- the sages are just the dungeon item you get

It's cool having multiple ways to beat a boss, but the arrow method doesn't seem nearly as satisfying. Plus if you hit him as he flies up at you, it's so easy to miss the best part of one of the best boss themes in the series.

I absolutely loved the Wind Temple. It was epic, the battle with Colgera was fun, and it actually really gave me some trouble. It wasn’t my favorite in the game, but it really set the feel of how the devs learned from BotW. But the Lightning Temple was actually my favorite. It was difficult for me and the Queen Gibdo fight was very hard. It had to repeat it the most out of all of them.

My rankings are: 1 - Lightning Temple 2 - Fire Temple 3 - Wind Temple 4 - Water Temple I don't count Hyrule Castle or Spirit Temple as actually temples. If I did they'd be near the bottom, maybe above Water Temple. Lightning Temple was great and came the closest to feeling like a traditional Zelda dungeon. It still doesn't get close to the heights of Skyward Sword and TP though. Fire Temple is good if you don't cheese it. Wind Temple is a solid intro temple. Water Temple barely counts as a temple and is very poor. Hyrule Castle isn't a temple in my book. The above-ground Zelda-chasing is very tedious and not fun, and there are no puzzles. It feels like a worse version of the BoTW Hyrule Castle. The underground area is much better designed but still doesn't count as a temple to me. Spirit Temple is literally just a boss fight and doesn't deserve to be called a temple. The lead-up to it is mostly quite good but what the game considers a temple is just a somewhat annoying boss fight.

Yep. As a lifelong Zelda fan, I’m just as disappointed as I was six years ago in the last game came out. Awesome dungeons is what makes Zelda really stand out. It’s what makes the game play unique and original. All four of these main dungeons were just as easy as the divine beast. It also doesn’t help that the game has a super lackluster storyline, and you have to hear the same cheesy crappy dialogue at the end of each temple, instead of learning something new like we did an ocarina of time or twilight, princess. Years ago, when Nintendo said they were taking inspiration from red dead redemption two I was hoping they were talking about the storyline.

personally, since I include the leadups to the dungeons, I loved the Construct Factory segment of the game because exploring the thunderhead isles was so interesting to me and I always was so excited and intrigued about what was in there the whole game I loved how the construct factory made use of creative Ultrahand mechanisms but obviously there wasn’t much of a challenge and it was tedious to control Mineru. My ranking would probably be (worst to best) Water Temple, Wind Temple, Hyrule Castle, Construct Factory, Fire Temple, Lightning Temple i loved all of them except for the water temple Fire Temple and Lightning Temple I consider to be some of the best the series has seen

I really didn't mind the Water Temple, I think they had a nice set of puzzles going for it, but maybe if they made it a little more bigger with bigger islands with enclosures would of made all the difference to look and feel. I would say I was most disappointed with the Spirit Temple, it didn't have much good leading up to it. Feels like they cut that one short because they didn't really know what to do with it. For it to be the second Temple dungeon within The Depths they really could of done more with it. Only being able to get to it after getting Mineru's Construct mask piece didn't have much of a big lead up to it, and it's like _"Hey go here"_ and then it's basically.... _"Oh... this is suppose to be a Temple? But I didn't get to do anything besides walk here and fight a random boss here."_ The fact they didn't have any big challenge leading up to it besides putting together Mineru's Construct body that to me felt like the biggest disappointment leading to a Temple, and it just so happens to be tucked away in a small area of The Depths, there was no multi-layer floors to go through with a set of challenges or anything to lead you into it, it was just climb these massive broken stairs and you're there. Seeing that the Spirit Temple was connected to the Faron Woods, and Dragonhead Isles I was kind of expecting a bit of a forest theme leading into the Spirit Temple To me the best temples that stood out to me most was the Wind Temple, Fire Temple and Water Temple, and Lightning Temple. I liked the setup the Lightning Temple had setup with the mirrors and stuff, I thought that was the most fun stuff, having to position mirrors to open doors and gates and stuff, and figuring out how to get one light source from one area to another. I think what really stood out the most for me was the music of the temples that gradually increased intensity as you open each lock or puzzle sections. Fire Temple had pretty good callbacks to Daruk with his theme in there. Colgera is probably my most favorite Boss music.
@frewtlewps1152
@frewtlewps1152 11 месяцев назад
I also thought The Spirit Temple was the most disappointing. I wish they used Mineru’s Construct within The Spirit Temple instead of The Depths. Maybe Mineru could’ve pointed to another elevator that takes Link back to the surface, and The Spirit Temple is a forest themed dungeon hidden in a cave in the Faron region.

Interesting. My list looks wildly different. I usually regard the paths to the Wind Temple, Water Temple and Construct Factory as part of the dungeon. I think that it becomes obvious Nintendo was experimenting with more open dungeons which really makes it difficult to pin point when a dungeon actually starts. Therefore I use change of music, setting as a marking point (same goes for Hyrule Castle which only has a dungeon map once you're on the upper half. Construct Factory doesn't have one.). 1. Dragonhead Island/Construct Factory/Spirit Temple 2. Lightning Temple 3. Fire Temple 4. Hyrule Castle 5. Rising Island Chain/Wind Temple 6. Wellspring Island/Water Temple

I wish that The Construct Factory was just part of the quest line, and the real dungeon was accessible through the same elevator that takes you to The Depths. This elevator could take Link back to the surface underneath the Zonai Ruins where The Spirit Temple resides. The dungeon could have a confusing labyrinthine layout and would involve puzzles with building Zonai vehicles, combat trials with Mineru, and clever uses of fusions.

🔥 Hot Take Alert 🚨 Wow, thats so different from my list! If I had to 1. Wind 2. Water 3. Spirit 4. Castle 5. Lightning 6. Fire Personally I think the fire temple was really a let down, the yunobo fight was funny and moragia was amazing! But then you just ring gongs, and a lackluster and boring temple boss. I loved the water temple though, everything from the score using the water orbs the low gravity and interacting with zonai devices in the was so so fun to try, and the unique mechanics make you really think about what to do! Sadly though, it easily got the worst boss in the game and kinda lost it number 1 to THE WIND TEMPLE! Seeing tulin grow up was amazing an using his power too! The puzzles were intriguing and really let you use everything you had, plus the best boss in the game 😎 COLGERA SWEEP 😎 (Btw when it launches it icilcles DIVE through its weakpoints dont use arrows TRUST ME changes the whole fight)

I’m with you on the fire temple being the worst. I hated that temple the entire way through. I found it really hard to wrap my head around the cart tracks and get where I wanted to go. I ended up brute forcing my way through most of it. The wind temple was the most fun and cinematic experience, though not particularly difficult. I would say it was the one I got the most enjoyment out of, if only because it was the first I did, but the lightning temple is the one I think was the most successful execution of a dungeon for this style of Zelda game. The spirit temple was interesting for me because 1. I had almost completely explored the depths before being prompted for the 5th sage quest, so I had already come across and been confused by that temple. And if we count the lead up to it, I also explored the thunderhead islands before that quest started as well so I had literally found mineru’s mask and started building the her construct before I did any of the quest stuff for it. Less cinematic experience, but it was really difficult to explore those islands while the storm was raging. My experience with the water temple was odd because I made it to the water temple before I went to any of the settlements so I was completely caught off guard by it. I was impressed by how difficult it was to get through, and I couldn’t figure out any of the puzzles. I was stumped. But then I actually followed the quest directions, did the wind temple, and then came back to the water temple and realized how straight forward it actually was. But I still have that emotional resonance of how challenged I felt when I stumbled upon it. It’s hard for me to rank the temples because I goofed the order of events so much. But I hate the fire temple

All the dungeons are good but not great for me. They are just a little too short, and all of them have the same... Sage tells you to activate this many terminals... setup. So, I have a pretty hot take (I guess) but, I really don’t like the botw/totk dungeon design. The atmosphere in totk’s temples are pretty phenomenal and I do really enjoy that aspect. However, the waypoints that are given to you at the beginning of each dungeon bothers me. I know that in previous Zelda games you would get a map and a compass to tell you where chests and rooms you haven’t explored are, which I guess are similar to waypoints, but you have to explore and find them. I love botw and totk, however their dungeons are lacking. I played through the construct factory and the spirit temple the other day and it felt like a breath of (the wild) fresh air. Because it was open ended, now waypoints just “here’s a construct, go find its limbs” and then you were free to explore. I would love to see a lightning or fire temple that tell you what the problem is, but don’t just hand you the answer immediately. Or a classic Zelda dungeon design, with the freedom to explore any way you can. Sorry for my long winded rant, and thanks for reading, but tldr: I hate the waypoints in the new Zelda dungeons, I want the freedom to explore and figure the dungeon out myself rather than being told exactly where to use the sages power. That being said, 6.water temple 5.hyrule castle 4.wind temple 3.fire temple 2.lightning temple 1.construct factory Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

I don’t think it’s fair to separate the lead up to the temple from the temple itself, because even if the lead up is not enclosed in the same building it is sort of structured linearly, so I think the dungeon should be considered from the moment you have the sage working with you. In that sense, the water temple is quite good, it has the underwater cave area, the sky islands leading to the temple, and finally the temple itself which is the final puzzle.
@angelmendez-rivera351

Right. I think too many people ignore the fact that in previous games, dungeons don't really have lead ups in this sense. But more than that, I think the English-speaking Zelda fandom just has an aversion to seeing Nintendo experiment with new things.

I think I might be in the minority with this take, but I hate the way the Mineru Mech feels. It was genuinely the only section of the game I did not have fun in at all. Building the mech was fine, but it's so unbearably slow and, at least for me, unintuitive to control. Slowly crawling through the depths was the antithesis of what I consider fun, and by the time I got to the Hinox, I just couldn't be bothered with the mech and just fought it by myself. So the bossfight against the seized construct was horrible. The concept is admittedly awesome, a mech battle in an electric boxing ring, but because of the controls, I could not enjoy it in the slightest. I was glad that it was over, which is a feeling the game never gave me at any other point. I think one part of why I don't like the mech is the fact that it uses battery power while walking. It's already pretty slow, and it drains a resource as well, really? Also my monkey brain could not adapt to the fact that attacking with the mech is mapped to the bumpers. That's more on me, but it didn't help with my perception of this whole section.

Yeah, plus Zonai devices expire really fast, it doesn't deal that much damage, it deals damage to you when you take hits so it is effectively a giant hitbox, it attacks SO slow, it is hard to get out of, just the whole design is really weird and counterintuitive.

honestly, i hated the fire temple. i don't know why, just the whole cart thing wasn't fun, and the atmosphere felt off. my ranking from worst to best would be spirit temple, fire temple, water temple, wind temple, and lightning temple. idk where I would place hyrule castle, because I haven't really explored it properly yet.

Maybe im biased because it was my first dungeon, but I really loved the water temple. The climb was brutal for me, and the puzzles were hard to figure out since I was still getting used to the mechanics and ways to cheat with the zonai devices. Even the mucktorok is my favorite boss. He is super easy to cheese if you know what you are doing, but can be extremely overwhelming if you are not fast, careful or daring enough (as I was on my first playthrough). I just really loved it all, starting from the Zora's Domain prelude.

1. Lightning 2. Wind 3. Fire 4. Spirit 5. Water The Lightning is the only real dungeon in the game. I don't count the lead up to dungeons, because Zelda dungeons have always had lead ups to the dungeon. It's not unique to open air, but 5 terminal locks in barley connected rooms is. I don't count Hyrule Castle as a dungeon. It's amazing, but it is just enemy encounters. Dungeons mean puzzles and locks and labyrinths. Which after the last 2 games is the most depressing thing for me when I think about Zelda games to come.

Exactly. For me Spirit Temple was not a dungeon but rather an absolutely beautiful experience that started from Kakariko Village, continued with the quest to collect armor pieces in Faron, going to Dragonhead islands, transferring the head to the surface, then to Depths. I find it totally narrow-scoped to describe only the e last part of the quest.

My ranking includes the gloom lair as a dungeon so here’s the list: 7. Water Temple, I think the Ocarina of Time water temple was better 6. Gloom Lair, not a good dungeon to end the game 5. Hyrule Castle, chasing fake Zelda around was annoying 4. Wind Temple, pretty fun but short 3. Construct Factory, I love having to come up with solutions to the ultrahand puzzles 2. Fire Temple, great atmosphere and great dungeon but those minecarts were aggravating 1. Lightning Temple, finally light puzzles again

@@Z-Dawg321 I don’t think the Water Temple is as bad as people say it is. It’s a difficult dungeon with the only thing holding it back for me is the constant switching of the iron boots, which was fixed in 3ds remake. It’s nowhere near the worst dungeon in the series and it probably doesn’t even make my top 10 worst Zelda dungeons.
@BoyProdigyX

Among me and my friends, this list literally looks almost backward. The Fire Temple was annoying, far too maze-like and the boss was easy and forgettable. The only good part about the Castle WAS the boss fight. The repetitive "Monster Forces" fights were just more of what you get all over the surface and is otherwise just "Meh.". The Lightning Temple was okay, especially the trek to raise the Temple itself, but the "puzzles" were convoluted and I thought it was one of the easiest bosses personally (though a cool one admittedly). I really liked most of the Construct Factory/Spirit Temple, except that "boss", who just stood there and waited for you to push it into the wires. You're just plain wrong about the Wind Temple though. It was fun, had atmosphere, and that boss fight was INSPIRED! I guess I should be mostly disappointed overall, but the rest of the game, and ESPECIALLY the story were just 💋

Hard disagree that the Fire Temple is the best fire temple in the series. It's visual design is super boring compared to something like the Goron Mines or the OoT Fire Temple. Every area of the TOTK fire temple looks the same, has the same assets and textures. The "rooms" are too wide and empty. It almost consists entirely of mine cart puzzles, making it repetitive, especially compared to the older dungeons that had multiple mechanics. And of course the enable 5 terminals thing from the Divine Beasts gets old fast. I'm sorry, but for the life of me I cannot understand why you think this is the best fire temple in the series...

for me it goes: 1. Wind Temple - it's definitely the one with the most spectacle and build up, and the boss fight is incredible, puzzles were just ok but a lot of fun also the music is sooo good, tulin's ability is in my opinion better than revalis gale in the context of this game and using it to solve puzzles was a blast 2. Water Temple - i loved the large gaps between the different sections leading up to it and the use of the waterfalls and orbs were fun to figure out, the boss was also really cool looking 3. Lightning Temple - the mirror puzzles (while annoying at times) were very well designed and a lot of fun, felt the most like a past Zelda dungeon of all of them, not the biggest fan of how they handled gibdos in the boss fight, riju's ability is really cool but as with most sages except tulin the activation needs improvment 4. Hyrule Castle - this one just kept on going and going and going, the moment i thought i was at the bottom there was another staircase or room full of enemies that's a positive and a negative, overall this one is just ok 5. Spirit Temple - i am including the build up of the thunderhead isles and tobios chasm here as the quests around them were full of lore and very interesting - boss fight was really mid tho and mineru is unfortunately not that useful in the end game, lots of fun to mess around with 6. Fire Temple - incredible setting, especially since it was in the depths, but had the most cheesable puzzles and most thematically boring boss and design of the game, every single puzzle could be solved by just climbing around things, reminded me most of the divine beasts, yunobo is easily the most annoying sage in terms of voice acting as well as getting his stupid ability to actually do something given it's insanely long cooldown Overall all of the dungeons in this game offer something for everyone, so I can definitely understand pretty much anyone's list, although I don't think anyone is putting the spirit temple at the top. There's stuff for classic fans, there's the fire temple for the 4 people that enjoyed the divine beasts and there's the wind temple for those of us who love spectacle in our games. 10/10 GOTY

Hot Take: The Divine Beasts were better than the dungeons from Tears of the Kingdom especially from a story and lore perspective. They had better puzzles, better mechanics, unique structures, interesting concepts, and amazing atmospheres. The only decent dungeon from Tears of the Kingdom was the Lightning Temple. The Wind, Fire, Water, and Spirit Temple were all bad. The bosses were better but the dungeons themselves were a step down from the Divine Beasts.

Nice to see some love for the Fire Temple. I've been seeing a lot of hate or discourse over how easily "broken" it is. But that's the point, isn't it? I'm also a fan of the Minecart stuff, so I'm slightly biased putting the Fire Temple and Wind Temple as my Top 2 TotK Dungeons. Then I'd say Hyrule Castle as it's just stunning to behold and everything. Then the Water Temple if only because having low gravity was actually kinda fun. The Lightning Temple was fine, but I wasn't enjoying it as much as others were. I dunno, it just felt kinda bland to me...but still better than the Spirit Temple. I'd call the Factory where you build the Construct for Mineru is the true dungeon here but even that felt lacking and boring compared to the rest. So my ranking is: 6. Spirit Temple 5. Lightning Temple 4. Water Temple 3. Hyrule Castle 2. Fire Temple 1. Wind Temple The boss music is what gives the Wind Temple the edge for me. The music throughout all dungeons as it builds up and against the bosses were amazing, but the Colgera theme is *chefs kiss*

I said it at release and I will say it again... THOSE ARE NOT DUNGEONS.... still better than BotW's divine dissapointments, but they are basically the same with a skin for their respective tribe. None of the "dungeons" have enemies in it... the "puzzles" were "okay-ish" at best and the bosses, albeit cool in design, lacking in personality, lore, reason, challenge.... everything... and not getting master mode in base game is a bit of an insult tho... (also, master mode "just" make the enemies spongier, so is still up to debate if it's really better tho...)
