The way Matt is describing it sounds kinda like depression... he wants to but he can't... the concentration issue which kinda sounds a little like a lack of motivation... That honestly sounds like depression to me.. I hope he's okay...

lyrics for life this was EXACTLY what I was thinking. I hope he gets help. Because this is his passion if he's feeling this way, like he just " can't " it's probably a mental illness. It's such a typical way to describe depression because it's so hard to put into words. It's not lack of motivation it's just like a big ass brick and your mind body and soul just "can't " poor baby :(

I said the exact same thing, as soon as those words came out of his mouth. He needs to see a therapist and psych so he can get back on track before it's too late. I let my mental illnesses go untreated for too long as a teenager and I'm paying for it dearly now - my dreams are gone.

It also may be "over training" compounding the problem; when you're pushing your body too hard. Over training (ie training far beyond what you're physically capable of for long periods) results in a massive release of cortisol, a stress hormone. In the short term, cortisol helps you power through pain, but long term effects are terrible. It often disrupts sleep, changes your appetite, injuries don't heal the way they should, it causes depressive symptoms, lowers motivation, etc. I wasn't a serious ballet dancer, but I was a Division I endurance athlete for 4 years in college and competed at an elite level for several years afterwards. Being tired and sore about 99% of the time was typical, but chronic over-training was hell on earth. When I was over-training, I had no appetite even though I was working out 6+ hours per day, I couldn't sleep even though I was exhausted, everything ached, I didn't want to see anyone, and felt sad and close to tears all the time. My body and mind were trashed. It took years of hard training to learn to recognize the difference between training hard enough to get better and easy enough to allow my body to recover between sessions. I felt EXACTLY the way he described, but didn't understand the cause until much later. I always just thought I was "weak" and needed to train harder. Figuring out how to get more sleep, get enough to eat, making sure I wasn't isolating myself etc made a huge difference. I was lucky that I got help. I hope he was able to get help, too!

Morgan Graf you and I had the same teenage hood. I had a nervous break down twenty years ago. I’m not the same, never recovered. Now I am 47. I went to NYC to do drama. Left after the break down. That passionate artist is GONE. I can barely get out of bed. Life was hard, but more meaningful when I had goals I was striving for.

Lifts are pretty technical and partnering takes time and work, the lifter needs to lift..the top person needs to know how to control their centre of gravity for the lift to work...

I feel so frustrated that Matt has missed so many rehearsals, especially after being warned. He seemed like he was struggling to get the choreo fast enough but missing is going to make it worse. I wonder if there's something more going on. :-(

I think the problem with this is that they auditioned and picked *ballet* dancers, and now they’re making them do contemporary, which is a completely different skill. That’s why they aren’t performing to standard.

Drives me nuts when some good dancers were cut for a person that doesn't even have the respect to give the same as their team-mates. He should have been let go and a guy from the try outs that was cut should have been brought in. Know this that were cut would bust their butts to get the chance he was blessed to get.
