Hmm how about cutting the pastry before it's cooked then cook seperately with tin tray on top.. I'll try that

When I went to school in the sixties they were square and half as thick with pink icing and we called them custard slices. Yum!

This is just custard and pastry. Dont call it Vanilla Slice. If you're going to make it, do it traditionally. It needs custard applied in a slab form not fancy splotches and its needs icing on the top. I WAS going to make this but now I'm not so keen. Disappointing

Maybe in your country that is the advice. This "custard" recipe is a joke on so many levels. The ingredients are all completely wrong for a proper crème pat. To anyone wanting to sample a proper vanilla slice, ignore this video completely and look for one where the chef knows what they are doing. The Da Malat video shows how it's done.
