I love how in the previous votes, everyone fought over which mob was best, and this year all three sides agree the problem is Mojang

The thing I don’t like about is that it’s not a mob vote, it’s a feature vote. No one’s voting for the crab, armadillo, or penguin. They are voting for the extended reach, wolf armor, or faster boat.

The 2023 vote is especially brutal right now because, ironically, the opposite of what people think: the mobs are TOO important. it’s either longer reach or armor for pets, something longed asked for by the community and the fact you only get 1 is going to cause so much fighting

This seems all too familiar -a growing populace inequality -demand to remove bias votes -a rise of civil unrest -a revolution in october

The real issue with the mob vote is that Mojang finds a way to make the added mob absolutely terrible.

I think a good solution might be to make the poll twice a year instead of just once, and have the additional polls consist of a random selection of mobs that lost previous votes.

They had the perfect formula with the biome vote. Everything gets added, we just get to choose which comes first. It's engagement without sacrificing content. Mob votes are the antithesis of that. Mobs who are not voted will be lost forever. That's why it's so hated. It became less about community engagement and more about Mojang making us fight each other so they can be lazy and add only one new mob per year despite being backed by the one of the richest company on the planet and being much more than a small indie studio now.

The weird thing is that they're aware of how disliked community votes are. They literally dedicated a whole april fools update to it and the uncanny part is that they put more effort into that than any of the content people voted on

More context: The winner-takes-all system splits the votes so that the losers almost always outnumber the winners, this could be fixed if they only offered two options. Another issue is the lack of detailed information leads to uninformed decisions. A lot of people voted for the Phantom hoping for an intimidating monster instead got the biggest nuisance in the game. A lot of people voted for the glow squid hoping for a movable light source or status effect only to get sparkly particle effects. The Sniffer only unearths two seeds for functionless flowers, it's especially frustrating given that the torch flower does not emit light despite high demand for new light sources, and it was deceptive because normally seeds are for crops not flowers. So even the vote winners regret their decision since the mob is never the best implementation of the proposed concept. Everyone sees it for what it is, a greedy publicity stunt. Minecraft won't stop doing it, because even the negative feedback is more social media mentions, and it's not controversial enough to get most people to quit the game. So by all accounts it's working as intended. The only way to stop the mob vote is to stop talking about it.

The mob vote only made sense when the mobs being voted were potentially disruptive to gameplay, neutral mobs that interacted with the environment or aggressive new enemies. It stopped making sense the second they started introducing friendly, purely environmental and mechanically helpful mobs and putting them in the firing line. There's never a reason not to want the game feel more lively.

It's kind of impressive how Mojang consistently manages to make the worst possible business decisions, multiple times a year

Can't believe this situation became a meme lol. But for real, I agree. Why bother making models and abilities for the new mobs if those who lose the vote don't eventually get in? It's kind of like a waste.

Here's a good fix for the mob vote: ALL mobs get added in eventually, BUT whichever mob wins the vote gets added in FIRST. Then the runner-up gets added in the next update, and so on with the third. That way, no mob is wasted, the community can still have a good way of interacting with the devs, and all controversy is lifted (maybe). As for the previous mobs that lost, just add them anyway lol. The hostile mobs might be touchy due to the phantom situation, but Mojang is known for being very aware of what they've done in regard to that, and I doubt they'll make that mistake again.

Honestly the first mob vote was pretty cool as it was a unique concept with early designs. But they kept doing it with much more laid out ideas to the point it’s not just beta stuff anymore and there is legitimate sadness in so much cool ideas going to waste. And especially how they promised to put the losers in sometime but haven’t seen to done that.

I was a minecraft player from when 1.0 released, and so my youngest brother has been enthusiastically giving me his take on this vote for a few days now. We both agree there isn't any reason why all three couldn't be in an update. What they each bring to the table is a simple mechanic or feature, not something complex like a whole new biome or something like the pillager raid. With these being such simple ideas, yet being given this much attention, it leads one to think that the devs have run out of ideas or aren't putting any real effort in. So it's no surprise that a growing number of people are getting critical of the devs.

Some other commenter said it the best. The Mob votes feel less like "Vote for the next big addition" and more like "Choose which 2 you will never see again" I think in the future, Mojang should skip the vote all together, and make an update dedicated to ALL the vote losers, Mob and biome alike.

The only problem is that they are never adding the mobs that lost after the vote. The mob vote would be great and fun it we know they will add them eventualy

So in summary: - Mojang gives us three mobs to vote for. - You can only have one in the game; the other two are sent to the shadow realm forever, which is unnecessary. - The exclusivity means that everyone who didn’t get their mob, which is likely more than half the voters, will be unhappy. - When big influencers sway the vote using their bigger voices and loyal fanbases, other voters will have even less power. - Mojang has a habit of implementing these mobs in unpopular ways (like how the Phantom went from a cool enemy to an annoying nuisance, or how the Glow Squid went from unique light source and hypnotizer to just a squid reskin, or how the Sniffer went from a finder of ancient plants to a finder of uninteresting flowers). - Many argue that’s the point of the vote, to offer the limited and exclusive, and that voters are ungrateful. - Others counterclaim that it needlessly divides the community, frustrates the losers, has a habit of disappointing the losers, and doesn’t do anything to improve the game or get the community involved in a healthy way. - Mojang likely keeps this up because bad press is good press, and it’s never bad enough to seriously hurt their reputation. - After 4 years of doing this, people are very unhappy.

I feel like the biggest issue with the idea that “they’re already trying their hardest” is that mod creators add every feature they talk about in under a month. Like it cannot be that hard.

Personally, my biggest issue with these latest mobs aside from the obvious "they could just add all of them eventually" is the fact that their functionality could be easily given to other existing mobs / items that desperately need it. There's been so many lackluster additions lately and it truly does feel like most of the stuff Mojang adds to the game nowadays has a single gimmick with little to no substance to it whatsoever (except maybe the deep dark)... Really, the crab pincer's functionality could've been given to a new item that uses Echo Shards in its recipe, the wolf armor could be crafted with turtle scute (the fact that they want to add a new mob whose only purpose is to drop the exact same thing as an already existing mob just with a different icon is incredibly lame and nobody's really talking about it) and they could just add the penguin's boat speedup effect to Dolphins or Conduits (though I suppose it wouldn't work in the Nether, where I'm guessing most people would want to use penguins in the first place). I'm not saying I wouldn't love to see these mobs in the game, god knows I adore the crab, but the reasons to put them in aren't really justifiable when they only do one (1) thing that makes more sense for / could vastly improve other items and mobs.

You know what would be nice? Instead of 1 mob vote a year, have 2. One that includes new mobs, and a mob re-vote, where they add all the mobs that lost at random so people could vote for one they'd like to see.

My biggest problem with the mob vote is that once a new mob is chosen, the other ideas are just scrapped and forgotten about. We have biomes that STILL stand completely empty or are useless. It's clear Mojang has great ideas for new mobs and also new features, but they are being locked behind a stupid vote. If you've done the work to make the mobs for the vote in the first place, just add them all.

I honestly hated the mob vote from the start, I wouldn’t mind them at all if the other mobs that didn’t win got added at a later time. The first mob vote had a lot of interesting mobs with cool designs, but what we ended up with was the freaking Phantom and the other mobs just faded away into being forgotten.

the biggest issue is the fact that the loosing mobs are genuinly never seen again. imagine never getting a longer block reach because someone else wanted Armor for wolfs and ect.

I think a point that is never talked about is how most mob vote winners are distributed with them being a relative (40/40/20) split with the winner winning by a small margin. But the problem with that is that the majority of people lose while only a minority win.

Another problem with recent updates is that new features often don't have much depth to them and they just aren't made to integrate very well with existing features. Copper is a good example, it's an entirely new ore and material and yet it will only has a handful of things you can make with it and those things also tend to be limited in the scope of their uses. Echo shards, amethyst, the sniffer and even archeology as a whole also feel a bit shallow in their implementation at least to me. I feel like they should be focusing a bit more on adding functionality to existing features and systems rather than adding more new but shallow ones.

You put it very succinctly. The mob vote shatters the illusion of infinite possibilities by highlighting two mobs that will NEVER be added to the game for every one that is

When you add up the total votes of the other 2 mobs that didn't get chosen, you often get the majority of players left unsatisfied with the chosen mob at the end.

My favorite thing about the mob vote is how they put time, effort, and resources into three concepts, making designs for them, making gameplay elements for them, maybe even programming them too, just to delete 2/3rds of it. No wonder they’re adding so little to the game.

the issue is that no matter what the mob they somehow manage to underdeliver and poorly execute it, the sniffer being an example of a great concept but terribly underwhelming

I’ve been wanting Penguins to be added for YEARS now. It’s always been my favourite animal. And seeing it could be added… by a mob vote is something I wanted the least to happen, and I know it’s not gonna be the winner and it does hurt for waiting all these years for it to be announced that it may never happen Edit: as the days went and some of the developers said that the mons that lost, would be in the game in time, I actually had a change a feelings and now don’t mind who wins anymore

Older biomes need a revamp, having exclusive ores or different cave designs would be cool, seeing a frozen cave or an underground sand ruin/temple would be interesting

We've seen in the Alley Dev Video (uploaded to their RU-vid Channel after it won the vote) that these aren't mob concepts they're proposing... these are mobs that passed the stages of development: a base idea (for the alley it was holding items), concept art, even programming the mob into the game. This means that Mojang has every mob that's failed the mob vote on hand, the Iceologer, Moobloom, Copper Golem.. they already exist! They just won't ever be added to the game. And that, for me, is incredibly frustrating. It also doesn't help that with every year that passes, more mobs fail the vote, and more people become upset that their favourite will never be added to the game. Every year this problem will escalate

Crazy how mod developers make mods with tons and tons of mobs in them but the official developers of Minecraft struggle with one every so often

I feel like this mob vote specifically doesn't offer much of a difference in playstyle, so I would prefer if they added all 3 of them. More content, more fun.

If Mojang was adding a ton of content consistently to the game, and only had room left in the pipeline for one mob, then I could understand. But they make content like.. once every year or so, and add a single mob to the game. So doing this makes it feel worse and worse over time since when you're backed by one of the biggest companies in the world, and one of the biggest games in the world.. you'd expect them to put in a little more than this.

Imagine that, for exemple, we had to choose between Creeper, Enderman or wolves to be put in the game instead of them all being added.... Mojang legit is the new Game Freak, putting zero effort in the game while taking stuff out

the reason no one is ever happy, is because there is literally a divide in the community, you can’t only cater to a fraction of your audience and expect your WHOLE audience to be happy

The first time it was fun, but fans began to realize some of the ideas were too good and unique to waste and the vote itself created needless infighting in the community. This year's event isn't when fans got angry, this year is when they're past boiling point First round also didn't cause much drama because they were all hostile mobs and served the same purpose of being an inconvenience so while fans pitied the loss of the other 2, it didn't cause too much anger. Then they introduced unique mobs, then dream happened

I know that Jeb said in the first mob vote that they wouldn’t revisit mobs, but honestly I think people would be much less mad at the state of mob votes if they knew those mobs would get in at some point in the future, being either buffed or nerfed depending on their place in the game.

Don’t worry guys, we’ll get some new blocks that serve no purpose whatsoever and the new stuff that actually serves a mechanic in the game will slowly trickle out by the end of 2025.

Its less "vote what mob you DO want" and more "vote what two mobs are never going to be added"

I feel like the other thing is that these are very basic animals too, so they could add them super easily and should exist in the world. It feels like if one of them doesn’t get in it’s like mojang is saying something like “penguins aren’t real” and they won’t be added later.

I wish they would not only add all 3, but also work on adding more of past mob and biome votes - just make the world more alive!

Issue: we are given a choice between 3 already coded and modeled mobs and have to choose one of them. Extra info: in previous mob votes it was said that the looser mobs will be added later, that never happened. Solutions: 1: add all 3 basic mobs in, as well as previous mob votes losses. 2: Make small updates with manageable time frames that include said mobs, allowing for more updates to the game in smaller and quicker packages. 3: make a vote for 3 update ideas prior to working on them, have the community vote what they believe would be more important to the game. After which have the second and third place votes be added later with improvements and added to later votes, if not just added down the road altogether. Results: 1: immediately make fans happy. 2: more room for error, happy fans, still not the best option but more affordable. 3: allows for the most love to go into the game and allows ideas to still become a reality.

Mojang really seems to be hell-bent on making us believe that they've learned absolutely nothing in the last 5-6 years

The current state of Corporate Minecraft with it's controversial mob votes proves that either Minecraft Inspired Indie Games (such as Terraria) have done things way better by listening to it's community and being passionate about it or Minecraft Modding bringing those mobs that lost to the votes, come back to life!

This is why I recommend _Vintage Story_ to friends who are interested in Minecraft. Once you get past the "it's just like Minecraft" phase, you realize just how well-made and cared for Vintage Story is while Minecraft devs are struggling to add single blocks and mobs to a game that got them millions. Do I even need to mention that Microsoft is rich?

I feel the issue is they seem to finished and polished to not be added at this point, if we were given a simple text description of the type of mob they might add, we might vote and not miss the possibility of the unvoted mob as much. Like "we want to add an armadillo mob that can give u wolf armour" instead of a whole ass model and video showing how it behaves. What do you think?

As some others have said, the vote would be way less dividing and rage inducing if all the mobs were added eventually, but in a prioritized order based on vote count instead of one only.

When a single modder can swoop in, and in *less than 12 hours* create a fully-functional version of one of the mobs from the vote on the SAME DAY it was announced, I find it laughable that Mojang is really all that stretched for resources. The custom animated trailers to announce the mobs very likely take more time, effort, and money than actually making the mobs, so they are literally spending extra effort... To have less.

I know developing these mobs are genuinely hard. But they already have prototypes and a massive team. If you already have half the code you need, and 500 people do do it, three things should really be manageable.

If I recall correctly there use to be a rumour about how misery in playerbase can actually increase revenue in games. I heard rumours that destiny 2 devs hired psychologists just to see if they should tease the players or not.

After the backlash to the phantom and glow squid, I'm kind of amazed Mojang haven't completely scrapped the idea of the mob vote yet. All it does is guarantee that a lot of people will be disappointed. Whereas if a single mob were presented instead, everybody could get hyped around it.

It's not really toxic if you've been lied to and gaslit for years on end and finally decide to stand up in solidarity, and this is a hill I'm willing to die on. Mojang promised they'd eventually add the losing mobs "at a later date" but we've yet to see this bar one exception, the frog, but can we even count that when it was only added thanks to the biome vote? Each passing mob vote more and more mobs go on to the "to be added later" backlog, and if Mojang really ever intended to deliver on that then they must _love_ backlogged projects. Considering most modders with little free time can achieve more in a few weeks working on a passion project than Mojang can in an entire 2 years as part of their job really speaks volumes if you ask me. People have been sick of the mob votes for years now especially since the glow squid fiasco, however this year is especially heinous when all 3 offer features many have been requesting for years, essentially pitting everyone against each other in an almost intentional way while giving the two that will inevitably loose the middle finger. As many have pointed out, it's not even about the mobs anymore but rather the "gimmicks" they offer. I'll take the biome vote any day over this.

I remember when in 1.7 they added all the different flowers, coloured glass, colored terracotta and many other stuff. Now we get a single mob and probably a new type of tree.

If Mojang wants to create some community interaction, then there are tons of other solutions to the problem. For instance, they could organize some kind of Minecraft ARG or some kind of puzzle that reveals what the next new mobs are going to be, instead of forcing the community to eliminate two mobs, therefore building community interaction, minus the crippling dissapointment. And there _should_ be multiple mobs too, so that chances are at least one of them will be interesting to the individual player, and so crippling dissapointment is avoided further, and therefore mass outrage will cease. And if THAT also sounds like a bad idea, there are still tons and tons of better things Minecraft could do other than that.

this mob vote is way more balanced than previous years, but they are really gatekeeping dog armor in a mob vote? If dog armor loses I'm willing to uninstall permanently, hell I might do it anyway for the principle of the matter.

My problem with Mob Vote is that all of the option are good in their own niche way. Questions then rise, "What will happen to the mobs that lose the vote?", "Why not all of them?", "Why we need to vote?"

As a few people have pointed out, the mob votes and small updates each have one purpose. For the mob votes: generating publicity: any publicity is good publicity. The more outrage and toxic the community is, the more people are thinking about Minecraft. For the tiny updates: they are content starving bedrock edition so the players of that version will buy more minecoins to get random junk from the shop. They only really update the game to appease the Java content creators who are the main source of publicity for the game.

The funny thing is that the few hours after being revealed, modders already have a mod of it in the game, with even better features sometimes

Everybody boycott mojang to make a "Mobvote Revival Update" where all of the old mobs get added in.

All 3 are cool, but I think the armadillo is kinda better than all of them because it’s a unique and useful creature in the middle of a Savanah biome that has no mobs spawn in it.

minecraft quite literally spent a year adding the most BASIC ASS mobs and only letting us choose one. I am so tired of this game😭

my main gripe is that mojang is focusing on the wrong things here, instead of adding content they should be making things that didnt really work as well in the game now function even better by reworking it.

There's literally no way that "Mojang is working hard" on these features. Mod creators consistently produce more and higher quality content than Mojang does. Seems to me that it's like how Twitter was. Bunch of people hired to do absolutely nothing most of the time.

The devs have mentioned in the past that adding all three would divert too many resources from the main update, but if that's the case why not do something like Buzzy Bees again? 1.15 was an absolutely tiny update, basically only adding one mob and a handful of related items, but fans didn't care because it came out half a year between updates instead of a full year. Having a little mini-update around December to tide people over and chip away at the backlog would make the "random shit" updates we've been getting lately feel like less of a wait for disappointment.

Supposedly, Mojang announced they would add the losing mob votes to the game if there was enough demand, similar to how the losing biome votes will be added. But I agree, please just add all of the mobs.

You know this really does illustrate how they go about thinking about community engagement. This is the only way they have put forward for the community to influence the direction of the game. Honestly this is like hunger games. It's like they put up these mobs like presidents to be voted for obviously you were going to get division when there was only one thing to decide on.

The whole mob vote system seems like it wasn’t really thought through enough, they can’t keep getting away with showing content that many people want badly and Then it ends up never being added. It just ends up with more disappointment rather than just adding the cool features people want.

My problem was the biome/ mob votes always promised the mobs and biomes to come someday but it’s been like five years and some of the biomes haven’t even been touched since then.

One problem is that before they were all vague ideas on what they could be so they couldn't add all 3 because it was just a vague idea however these are fully fleshed out mobs with all there ideas there is no point in trying to vote for an idea when the project is already there

What's really embarrassing is modders can literally reverse engineer the "mob vote" behaviors 48 hours after they show them, remodel them and recreate them from scratch, and put them in the game anyway. VS a billion dollar enterprise and entire dev team pretending they can't just add everything they already have done and are showing off. INB4 "b-b-b-ut mods...b-b--but quality control" if the mods weren't quality how do people stack 300 of them without crashing or conflicting then?

The issue that I have is the result of the mob vote No matter who wins, there will be people that aren’t happy, thus creating anger and discourse. The mob votes are advertised to be a fun way for the community to get together and decide on a mob to be added in the future, but it ends up just having the opposite effect, causing people to fight and create a divide. If Mojang actually listened to the community, they’d realize that these were a horrible idea from the start.

The worst thing is that the 3 mobs are usually practically finished and included in the Snapshot, they would only need to give them a few adjustments and they could put them in without difficulty, but Mojang is a lazy company that does nothing and is too lazy to put more than 1 useful mob.

The funniest and worst part of the mob votes is the mobs that win the votes are either boring and uninteresting or annoying. Glow squid is forgettable and the Phantom is the most hated mob in the game behind the skeleton.

I always had the impression that they do the mob vote and leave the other mods out because they expect modders to add them to the game through mods, basically doing the work for them

One man made this entire game in time shorter than it takes a whole group of devs to add 3 mobs and 2 new blocks. Meanwhile modders already made those two mobs in less than a day.

I think that all of em deserve a spot in Minecraft. I'll do my part to achieve that.

I hate the fact that they mostly go for normal features, like why don’t go for a giant crab, that live close to beaches and fight zombies, hunt turtles and more, why don’t go for a idk ore hedgehogs, make them dog size, feed them with iron, gold or diamond to tame them and they can fight and track ores, idk I just made this up but I wish more creativity from the developers

Quite frankly the only way we could end the mob vote is to get a group so incredibly large and important to protest and completely ignore the mob vote and not vote period that the mob vote would no longer generate attention and views.
