The thing is people expected it to be an out and out action movie. The interviews had made it seem as if it was the massiest Mohanlal movie with action stuffed in to from the brim to top. Plus the slow pacing at parts made it clear that Family audience is not going to spread a positive WOM. I personally loved it. A cakewalk for A10. A lot of metaphors and Symbolism here and there. One of the better movies Mohanlal has delivered in recent time. P.s. - now imma watch your video😂

I'd throw in my 2 cents- this film reminded me of Nirbak, a Bengali film about 3 love stories of adog, a tree & a corpse...weirdly experimental, highly meta-philosophical & technically brilliant. I'll forever appreciate when a film maker like LJP who doesn’t spoon feed the audience and makes them seek the truth, question & see in depth the strengths & faults of the movie. This was nothing short of it, I need to watch it couple of more times to get all the message. So far I felt like I'm not educated enough to judge it

LJP movie theories go wild everytime, for me Malaikottai Vaaliban felt like a satirical take on all the Indian movie making antics from the crazy lens of LJP, from excessive slow motions, action & fights which are borderline comics, use of crazy guns and how stupid it looks going bigger and bigger with every movie, unhinged and crazy villains, and downright hollow story and lots of such expression pack in an elaborate Sanjay Leela Bansali like colorued frame.

I very much loved this movie , i used to watch promotion interviews about this movie before the release , there they specifically mentioned that this one LJP approached as comic book style when . i heard it my expectation was it would be fantasy action movie or something. But when I step on to the theatres I really got what they meant . LJP literally treated this one as a actual comic book , i mean 70% of the movie was narrated as episodes about the adventures of this valibhan character , just like reading a comic book , episode by episode and he even bothered to put a title for each episode too.except for the last part , last part it became a drama narrating the the actual story of Malaikottai valibhan .I haven't seen any body used such a narrating style in a movie before ..the problem with such a style in a movie is , in movie we would ask for a connection or continuation or logic with the story to the character , but in a comic book about a comic character you wouldnt ask for it , or seek for logic , you just want to read and enjoy this characters adventures , this movie was taken exactly like that , if people take it in that sense , they would like it ,or not.For me it was a very much unique and fresh experince .

Beyond the main plot of the film I felt "Malaikottai Valiban" was also a journey of the growth of our popular form of entertainment... If the first scene is reminiscent of ancient plays where the clown first appears and narrates the story (the very first frame of the film was reminiscent of a stage)... then the horse is lost. The part that tells the story of the warrior has the appearance of a satire... From there, the film travels to the shadowy pavkoot (Yarat? Nan Devi) and the North Indian Nautanki (the song scene in "Ezhimala Kota") and when it reaches Mangad Kalari, the film shifts to the vibrancy of the Great Indian Circus. The fight choreography and the structure of the show is like that of a circus... Then the film takes on the look of late 70s Bollywood movies (including a direct tribute to the "Mehbooba" song from Sholay) when it goes to Ampathur Kota... Then when it reaches Thirchenthur Pooram, it's a heady mix of 80s Tamil film narratives and Shakespearean tragedies' character creations... in the post climax. The film ends with a hint of a superhuman character in the VFX/AI era... (credits : Mukesh Kumar)

@@RrrLover-hv7jpIt's heartening to hear your connection to the stories from your childhood mirrored in the film. I wholeheartedly agree - anyone who grew up immersed in such narratives would likely find 'Vaaliban' to be a nostalgic and delightful experience. However, I also acknowledge that preferences can vary, and not every film suits every taste. While constructive criticism is valuable for growth, it's disheartening to witness some turning to personal attacks and insults directed at the actor & director. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but using a movie as a means for personal assassination doesn't contribute to a healthy discourse about the art of cinema.

Unfortunately, Mohanlal is both the blessing and the curse of this movie. This is a character that can only be pulled off by him and in my opinion the movie was good only because he played the title character. Unfortunately, Mohanlal comes with his fanbase who are absolutely awful. They expected something and when this movie didn't turn out to be that, they just tore it down instead of trying to enjoy the movie for what it is. Add to this the hoard of haters that Mohanlal has who are waiting for him to slip up in the slightest way possible to Troll him to death.

@@sheethal8sasthriUsually, and especially lately, Mohanlal (whom I love and am a huge fan of) has this habit of blaming the audience if his movies don't work. I get it, he's being a team player and supporting the work of his colleagues and crew but USUALLY it's not the audience's fault if a movie is bad. Lately he has been making a lot of bad movies and defending them. This one however, is NOT one of those instances. Mohanlal, Shibu Baby and LJP are absolutely correct when they say that the audience is the reason this movie failed to perform as it deserved. The cinematography was on another level. Understand its not everyone's cup of tea, but for the ones it worked it was a great experience. If people were expecting a pazhassiraja, bahubali etc then u r in a wrong movie..Is the movie slow, yes. Is there issues in screenplay, yes. But is it so bad and be torn apart and trolled..hell no. Its a good experimental movie and executed pretty well.. (Absolutely hated watching the movie with a terrible crowd, hooting and bad mouthing at every scene and destroyed my theatre experience. Even when his brother got killed, i was like, okay because mohanlal's performance didn't create emotion for me. However you look at it, this movie is a failed experiment, especially because the heroic acts done by mohanlal were done to make us care about the character, and it didn't. The ending announcing the second part became comical the moment they showed someone like Hulk with mohanlal's face. Also, announcing that this movie is only half a movie and there's a part 2 is the biggest middle finger audience can get. They should've announced this as part 1 atleast, since they were planning to make a part 2.

I loved the movie and lucky for me got connected very early. Turn each scene of the movie like chapters of a comic. The background cries and laughter as how a comic would draw them in a small box. Hope it does well so we get a sequel. But I sort of expected that this would get the same polarizing views as Double Barrel.

I felt like the messaging or the marketing of this movie during the promotions went slightly off-script and they (perhaps) unintentionally built up this hype of it being a mass, action entertainer showcasing Mohanlal in a larger-than-life avatar that his fans have been craving for some time. But in the end it was yet another LJP movie rather than a Mohanlal movie - experimental, wacky and not-everyone's-cup-of-tea. Perhaps there was also the weight of expectations when someone like an LJP comes together with Mohanlal, something that Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam managed to avoid rather well as it was rightly promoted as an off-beat drama from the very beginning.

Not everyone. This is first time in malayalam that a movie of this dimesion comes in the Malayalam cinema. This film standing in between fantasy and reality--it was put in between. Most of the scene had a tendency to shift to fantasy especially the pillar breaking scene, the circular barrel tank scene(mostly reminded me of childhood favourite storyboardings seen in comics)and for the proof that its tending towards fantasy is the scene after the climax in the prelude to the second part , the intro of his fathers giant foot . This story can only be built up in a dramatic sense which made me sleepy in just one area in the first half which i attribute to the story which can only be presented this way. Yeah I had this same issue seeing ponniyin Selvam in certain parts. See the film just like that. Why do people just destroy a film like this? When will they realize this as the master art that malayalam cinema has lacked these years. Why do you think that only hyperrealism works in malayalam cinema. Surely you are going to miss such art becoz they are destroying it

I believe that directors who approach Mohanlal gets intimidated by his huge stardom and create a movie that place him as a supreme centre and all others are just satellites that revolve around him. This will ruin the story line of the movie. Director should have a strong storyline and whoever the actor is, should adapt to the role. I’m 100% sure that a legend like Mohanlal can do that but director shouldn’t be intimidated by his mass fan base and stardom. This is the reason, his movies are failing recently in box office

To achieve the creative freedom and pipe-dreamy storytelling of Amarchithra Katha or panchathanthram fables, Lijo made the film without seamlessly connecting episodes and events in it. It's almost as if they lost a couple of pages of the script from each chapter and went ahead without them. And of course the genre mishmash is painfully visible. It's ironic how the film struggled with the same existential crisis that the protagonist had to go through in it!

Rant ahead🚨 Went to watch it with my husband yesterday, he fell asleep at the beginning (may be he was tired), i watched it first half. We left at the intervel. Experience: The theatre was packed with fans, so i expected some commentary here and there but was silent with occasional laughs (due to the romance track 😁). Opinion: I agree that people are having polarized opinions about this film. The visuals are just stunning like those Wes Anderson style meets Indian comics & folklore. Some were saying the film was very Shaolin martial arts cinema themed, which i mildly agree. From the title card, i got major QT vibes with the soudtrack very western movies inspired, but was quite repetitive (The title card track reminded me of the famous Django opening theme with the scenery too). Verdict: This is a very artsy film & i give LJP points for experimenting with such style of film making. All in all, i might give it a go again when it comes on OTT (so that i can speedrun often)! Visuals & cinematography, lal sir acting was best part of it. Hindsight: There was another film which experimented with similar style which also got polarizing opinion, film is "Mahaveeryar" which i loved more than MV!
