GSM keeps trying to charge people a ton of money for 4116 knives. Same issue with the Cold Steel Razor Tek line. Meanwhile, I can get a Mora Kansbol in Sandvik 12C27 with a modular sheath system - superior steel, superior handle, superior ergonomics, superior grind and cutting performance, versatile carry system, all for under $50. I can get a Garberg with 14C28N steel, full tang, modular sheath - again, superior steel, grind, ergos, and cutting - $85 on Amazon. GSM can kick rocks with no shoes on.

Facepalm! It's been $39.99 at a place with a name containing sounds of 'MID and 'WAY for some time now. The low price is only the bright Yellow and Blue one, not the latest colors on the Aegis FX. Sog TAC folder is $42.99 (black or green). Aegis AT folder is $39.99 (moss or blue), also D2 cryo with Tanto blade $39.99. Sometimes they have some nice sales. Get two, and practice sharpening. Lastly, he may be right on the blade geometry lacking in the performance department. I grabbed a few for stocking stuffers and gifts in the case that I don't enjoy them. It is what it is, and that's under $80 bucks for TWO and shipped for free!

Midway USA has this Aegis knife on sale right now for 39.99--I just got a SOG Trident from them for 49.99--After getting it I can see why it was half price. I have avoided SOG for quite awhile because it just seems that their quality has really dropped--buying that Trident has confirmed my thoughts. I think I'll pass on this Aegis but that price at Midway is pretty good for those inclined to buy one------Good review too--thanks

This SOG appears to be weekend warrior's bait... design, features, and grind while over the counter may look kind of cool = translation concerns the very shortcomings. Does SOG still have lifetime warranty? Could be a part of the 'over-pricing' cost factoring.

Update. So today I accidentally dropped it while crossing the road (that's quite different in India than US so I'll spare the details 🤣). 3 buses and 6-7 cars went on the knife on asphalt before I could pick it up. Thanks for this vid. I've been looking at this blade as an option for light hiking & general utility but poor blade grind (ie. fake Scandi) & ergos have scrubbed it. I'll stick with my well loved Moras. As for pricing - GSM need to give themselves an upper cut. Their overpricing on 4116 (ie. budget) steel and FRN/GRN (ie. plastic) handles is a crime. Coming from Germany & having cryo treatment etc. does not make 4116 anything more than basic, bottom-end, entry level stainless. (See also Cold Steel Razor Tek by GSM.) Shame.
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 Год назад
I've seen a few customs made in 4116 with custom heat treatment that did very very good. Its a good steel with the correct custom heat treatment. Mass production not so much. they just want your money and want to hit a price point.
@realbroggo
@realbroggo Год назад
@@tacticalcenter8658 100%. There are some great makers out there who can get the best out of almost any steel. Just to add, with customs you know that you're paying for the time and effort of the maker and expect to pay the extra $$$. As you say this doesn't apply to mass production. Enjoy your day!
@tacticalcenter8658
@tacticalcenter8658 Год назад
@@realbroggo there's very easy way, pay custom heat treat guy to provide a heat treat protocol for the factory. It may not be the best but the best a factory can do as long as they have some sort of QC and intelligence. The way it Stands now is factories just use heat treatment protocols that arnt particularly for Knives or knives for people who just need something cheap to cut something with. If they just want to sell as much as possible and don't care about the knife or the user's, then its just mass produced junk. They can test different protocols too if they dont want to pay for a protocol from an expert. This is called r&d.

I've had a Buck Vanguard for 20+ years with wood scales and 420HC steel. It's a very functional knife. At the time I brought it was my do everything knife. Butchered deer and rabbits, cleaned fish, cut rope, carved feathersticks, batoned to split wood, whittled with it, cut up boxes, and did some carving, plus cut meat, chopped veggies. The hollow ground blade make it very slicing. Easy to sharpen, holds an edge. I love mine. Pretty hard to go wrong with it. Cabela's is supposed to have an upgraded version out of S30V.

What is driving the "Thin Handle" designs these days? Similar problems with the Benchmade Anonimus. Is it to appeal to the "concealed carry" blade people? I can understand why a smallish hunting knife may have that kind of design to primarily be used in a pinch grip. You need some width at the back where the web of your hand presses and the outer fingers cancel the torque.

G'day Bob, it does get a bad rap from the previous versions and of course the branding. I've had one for years and beat the hell out of it, more out of curiosity than anything and it's held up fine. They use a 9Cr19MoV steel on this model, which I've found to be pretty decent stuff. Great sheath IMO, the fire steel works well, the hammer pommel works well the whistle works and the sharpener works ok-ish, (well enough to get out of strife). For those that cant stand the large orange "BG" on the handle, Wilson wrap it, or color it in with a black sharpie, lol. I do have plenty of more premo knives that I'd take out on the trail first, but as a bang for buck package, not sure there has ever been better value out there. I'd suggest pair it with a BK-9, machete or some other big fella and you'd be in excellent shape. Perhaps an unpopular view, don't care, I can only call it as I see it. Certainly would be interesting to see what Aaron has to say. Cheers Duke.

G'day Aaron, yeah, no value here. Plenty better options. CS and SOG together may end up .................. Cold & Soggy, lets hope not. Cheers Duke.

Absolutely garbage. Especially for the price. $20-25 maybe. That's the value I see in it. Wouldn't spend a dime more on it.

I just received two new examples of this knife today, even the same handle color. I am not happy. Agree on the grind, but come on, these are so dull they won't even cut paper out of the box. I'm going to have to actually put edges on them out of the box -- UNACCEPTABLE.
