Basically, when someone dies, their body undergoes rigor mortis which is the stiffening of the body caused after death. The reason why the eyelids are easier to close on fresh corpses and harder on ones that have passed hours is because of pressure changes in the eyes which makes it collapse on itself and lose its round shape, plus the eyelids losing its natural lubrication from blinking and tears. These eyes may re-open, and may need something like an eye lubricant or eye caps to keep it closed (which is apparently what morticians commonly use).

One and half a month ago our beloved doggo passed away and I tried to close her eyelids. With about 4/5th success. It is definitely not as easy as they make it look in movies especially if you are struck with grief and your fingers are shaking. We had many Dogs over the years but this one was the last familydog we had in a lo~ng time and no one ever managed to catch our hearts & souls this well with her highly expressive eyes. She was a British Bulldog. Not all Angels have Wings. Some have Fur, a wet nose and a heart bigger than the world. Rest in Peace. 🙏🕯

I had that experience when one of my dogs passed away. My sister and I were with him, and I tried to play it off nonchalantly the first time I tried closing his eyes, but then I tried a couple more times and they wouldn't close at all. Despite how sad we were, we couldn't help laughing about it once I finally acknowledged it.
