I loved this scene because as an autistic girl myself, I totally would’ve reacted the same way as Matilda did. And I very much appreciate them showing that an autistic person having a sensory overload does not always have to mean that we’re screaming bloody murder while banging our head against the wall or something like that, for me it usually just means that I cry a lot or are on the verge of it like Matilda was.

This scene is one of my favorites (the other is the comfort dancing) it's so realistic and perfectly captures her increasing struggle during the journey. And it shows how even with a repeatable routine things could always end up working out differently like the weather

I’m not on the spectrum but I have ADHD and sometimes get horribly overwhelmed, so headphones with cancelling sound are a must have for me. Also I have my own thing to focus, a slime or zippers (only a small zipper) and I play with those to ignore everything else. I know it’s not the same but this is something I thought about recently and helps a lot. If it’s completely different for you then I do apologise, it’s not my intention to be disrespectful or anything.

There is actually a huge overlap in sensory processing for ASD and ADHD. There is also a high rate of comorbidity. Something like 60%.

Ngl, even i started getting the urge to plug my ears at the parts on the train. And i grew up in the city, I’m USED to that stuff!

This is so relatable and is so close to something that actually happened to me in 2014. I didn't go to college/dropped out because on enrollment day I had to go on one scary commute alone on a bus, into a big city, and it was enough for me. Being so far from home and feeling so vulnerable and conspicuous in public places, being super sensitive to everything, and being afraid of people, so many unpredictable things ... When I first saw this clip a few months ago I was so shocked because I thought I was the only person who had this experience. I figured out I was autistic in 2018 and now I know what I am it's so liberating and such a relief. I'll never be a commuter or a normal adult but now I can explain why. Anyways this made me feel so seen 😭 I wish it was available to stream on Netflix/in the UK

Okay, I'm screaming a little and I went to show my mom but she's busy and didn't get excited with me: I am also an autistic person named Mathilda!! In my life, I've only ever met 2 others, one who spells it without the 'h' as, Matilda, and one who spells it FULL German style, "Mathilde." Now to see representation of my name that's not a girl with telekinetic powers, or living with a hit-man, AND she's autistic on top of that?? I'm so happy!!! I haven't really watched this show but now I want to so bad!! *edit* but now I'm also crying because the subway noises were really overwhelming and kind of painful, I had to walk away from my phone and then Matilda started crying and when she said, "I'll never be able to do it by myself," that hit me so hard because.... I'm never gonna be able to live on my own, I'm currently still living at home with parents, eventually I'll move in with my girlfriend and... who knows what else. But I'm never gonna be able to do it on my own, and it seems to come so easily to other people I know. It makes me feel even more like I don't fit.

I'm an Autistic girl living by myself in NYC. I've been here for over a year, and there are things I love and things I struggle with. I don't recommend NYC being the first city you live alone in as an autistic person, though. I went to college about 40 min from my home first. Something great for autistics about NYC is that people are direct and mind their own business. I can see how it would be very challenging for someone with sensory sensitivities though, especially sound. It's also hard to make friends.

I have high functioning autism and I put on headphones everywhere I go like car trips,shopping centers and noisy restaurants because I have sensitive ears
@KellyJoule

It's not safe to do that, but I also have high functioning autism and wear them but always try to keep one ear out for safety. I LIVE in NY, so I'm not as panicked by the area. She made the right call not to wear headphones, and like other commenters said it doesn't always work that easily, especially in new environments.

I've only seen clips from the show here on RU-vid, so does she have headphones or ear defenders? I grew up in a city, so wear my ear defenders in busy places and on the train, but I wouldn't wear headphones because they produce noise and therefore are potentially dangerous. Ear defenders just filter out the noises that my brain won't and dull the louder noises, so are actually super helpful. I also gave my old ones to my friend and she's found they've really helped her too.

I couldn’t go to my dream university either I just couldn’t do it I couldn’t do the huge classes and the long commute and the huge buildings and it crushed me for a while. An autism diagnosis later and I go to a small catholic college near my house and I’m thriving. We learn to adapt❤
