Another great video Martin,very informative. I never realised you had so much gear simply in bags alone. It certainly shows you put a lot of thought into what you need in the outdoors. I know some people say they don't like the gear reviews but i do think it is necessary to do a video like this to explain the mindset and methodology behind each item in your kit. Thank you and keep up the good work. Cheers.

Glad you like the video. I have put a lot of thought into the gear since I started this project on RU-vid. My plan has been to make a video about each of the main categories of gear. When I have managed to do that I will focus on a lot of other things in my videos. It has been a great learning experience for me and I hope some of my viewers also find it useful and interesting. Thanks lot for watching - Martin

I'm from Los Angeles, and I enjoy your videos. I've been watching a lot of videos about the outdoors, and have wanted to go out into the wilds to connect with nature (being in this concrete jungle). A lot of the videos I've watched have been presented by really knowledgeable people, but its quite intimidating in a way. I've been thinking "do I need to know all this to even start a journey?" but I like your rustic "one man in nature" approach to it. So I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your experiences in your part of the world and look forward to more videos. I've been inspired to do the same in this local area (yes, we have mountains and forests here haha). I just need to find the time to do it.

Just a thought and perhaps a bit of a critique. Your early videos were all about bushcraft and I enjoyed it as it was a very different setting than anybody else on RU-vid. Lately the content of your videos is simply gear reviews. Interesting but what separated you from the masses was your exotic location. I would suggest to keep the adventure high and add the reviews as part of your craft. I’ll keep watching cause I like your way, but some suggestion as your channel evolves.

Thanks for sharing you thoughts my friend. I do think I have made a lot of different kind of videos in the past. I intend to continue doing that. I do think a few gear videos might be helpful for some of my viewers. For me this is not about doing reviews, but sharing some of my experiences. Regarding free gear: I do not consider any gear to come for free. The payment is a fair presentation of gear that I actually like. I have bought all the gear I talk about in this video myself. I do have a long term plan for the channel. In the future I will make a lot more videos about other thing than equipment. This video will probably be my only video on backpacks on this channel. My passion is spending time in the woods, not testing new gear :) - Martin

Thank you for the response Martin. Two things for the record. Having made a few videos myself I know the time and energy that goes into producing anything so, you are right, nothing is free. Second my critique is for the betterment of the channel. I think it has real potential to showcase international bushcraft so we can all learn. Keep on bro!

I am really enjoying all your content, and am very glad you are taking the time to do something different. Rather than a critique, I would simply say that the thing that really stands you out on youtube is your clear love of nature and your ability/skill with video/audio in communicating that love. Your thoughtful approach and slow tv style really connects viewers with the landscape. My favourite bits? The times you focus on the experience not the kit. I am guessing you will keep the channel about both. Thanks for sharing all the experiences - your videos genuinely get me outside more.

Can't go wrong with Sea-to-Summit compression drybags ( the orange panel lets water out when it faces the ground ), and with Maxpedition ( not cheap though, but more then worth it ). The Rolipoly ( dump pouch ) is one of my favs, got several small ones and several Mega ones, always good to have on your person/ pack. Good vid as usuall ;-) looking forward for the next one.

Hi Martin! I'm a new subscriber and I enjoyed your video. Like many others I watch mostly for location content and Norway has epic coastlines (fjords). Rather than watch a review about your gear which is interesting to see what you take out, many of us want to see your incredibly beautiful country especially the views on your coastlines. Speaking of gear, I just bought a Norwegian Army Rucksack for my summer bushcraft excursions. I absolutely love it. It was made famous in Kirk Douglas' movie, "The Heroes of Telemark," and consequently has been nicknamed the Telemark Pack. I regret not backpacking in Norway while stationed in Germany. I made it to Denmark and got just a taste of Scandinavia...clearly not enough.

I watched all the way through. Thanks. 1) I have tried many packs over the years. There is only 2 choices for me - ALICE Large and ALICE Medium. Same frame, different pack. My ALICE medium goes with me everywhere from Nerskogen to Finnskogen and from Alice Springs to Colorado Springs. 2) Dry Bags : I use Sea Line - 9 litre to 65 litre 3) Sleeping bags : I use the US 5 piece sleep system 4) I don't think 6 cans of Aass Fat will fit in that cooler bag. (maybe 33cl from Duty Free) 5) Nalgene bottles are over-rated and really for Eco-Hippy vegetarians. In the sun they make the water taste funny. It's over-rated. A regular canteen is enough. 6) I also have a couple of Camel-Bak's. I hardly use them. I prefer 1 and 2 litre water bottles. It's best to split up your water anyway for safety and hygiene. One crack in your camel bak and all the water is lost / contaminated. 7) Paracord is for parachutes. It's useless and horrible for camping. You're better off with regular nylon string. Every one copies everyone else and that's why people use paracord. Everyone is too afraid to admit that it's a pain in the arse and not good for anything. Ditch the paracord and purchase something more practical. 8) It's best to not to line the pockets of the chinese trinket makers. Hope you understand. Cheers :-)
@NorwegianWoods
@NorwegianWoods 6 лет назад
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Ade. I have not had any big problems with the paracord so far. It is not great but it does the job. I got two 100m rolls dirt cheap so I don't feel that I need to spend money on something else at the moment. I guess I will look for something with less stretch when I have used it all. This is the first time I have been accused of being a eco-hippy vegetarian. I don't feel ilke one though :) I always appreciate your entertaining and insightful comments - Martin

Sorry, Martin, I watched your video in spurts. Regarding dry bags many of us out here use heavy mil contractor bags to line our backpacks which keeps the entire contents totally dry. Pack covers are good to an extent but the flaw is it covers the front and sides, not the back that is against your body. In a recent torrential downpour all of my gear within the pack was totally dry. Dry sacks add weight and have no function once in camp whereas a contractor bag has many: ground insulation, fire wood collection, stuff leaves in it for use as a mattress, a poncho, rain shelter, and as tarp camper I have inserted my sleep system in one to keep my system dry and clean (mud splatters especially). Uses are limited only by one's imagination. I love that they are rather inexpensive...a box of 25 has lasted me over a year so far. My packs contain at least one on every trip. Even when I travel one is in my pack or luggage.

After having had a lot of issues with zippers getting ruined, im probably gonna try to stay away from backpacks that use zippers for the main compartment. I realize the zippers on backpacks are usually better quality than the zipper on my pants, but i just dont trust zippers to last forever - and i have also noticed how much it sucks when the shoulder strap got ruined on my old cheap backpack. Luckily i was just a few kilometers away from home - but it was enough for me to realize how essential it is with a good quality backpack... I have an old military backpack with a removable external frame. Even though it is probably 20-30 years old, it looks like almost new condition, and it came with extra leather straps, for attatching stuff to either the backpack or the frame itself. I have had it for maybe 10 years, but it doesnt look very nice, and it was too small for my 3 person 3 season tent setup to fit inside, together with a sleeping bag and the other stuff i needed to bring... So i just figured it was an old backpack that was not very good compared to todays backpacks... But i think i was wrong about that..! It is actually the perfect size for my current hammock setup, with a kinda big winter sleeping bag, and it still have room for a BIG bottle of water in one pocket, and a good amount of food in the other pocket. And thats without attatching anything to the outside. I cant believe i had this the entire time, thinking it was too small and "stinky", LOL! It is way bigger than i need for a short camping trip - and if i ever need anything bigger, i can just attatch one of the military dry bags (or 3!!!) to it. I was looking to buy another backpack, but now i think im just gonna spend that money on hookers and cocaine instead XD
@Haerleif
@Haerleif 6 лет назад
I''ve had the opposite experience with backpacks with and without compartments and pockets, people who pack lightly like me might find that stuff move around down in the big main compartment instead, making it more difficult to retrieve when you need it. I don't mind strapping things to the outside (easy access) and the pockets and compartments makes it easier to find smaller stuff, if you know where you put it...

Well, I’m sorry but you do remind me about this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DjSst3LcUHk.html It’s good, though, and all in good fun I hope. I enjoy both kind of videos, it’s just easier to respond to a video like this. I think I’ll go for a molle bag for my next day pack, a Finnish Savotta Jääkäri M. It’s a military style bag, and while not the lightest it’s really sturdy. I use this size of bags for everything from shopping to day trips and I’m rather tired of wearing them out. And thanks for the warning on large, heavy pouches but I rather like pouches and haven’t had much trouble with them yet. I guess they need to be somewhat small to not flop too much around. And the NATO principle of strapping everything on at least twice, so it still hangs on if one strap fails is useful when hanging things loosely like this. I have ideas to try, to put it that way. As for camera bags, I still keep to the padded nylon. Lowepro style. It’s fairly inexpensive and light, if bulky. And I have lots of gear to save up to. But combining camera bags with molle straps could be a way to go, I’ll see.
