Everything About Raiding Ancient Cities & Wardens in Minecraft 

My son (11) and I just started playing a few weeks ago and we ran into an ancient city the other day. We were terrified from videos we have seen about the Warden. We dont have fancy gear but we have fun trying to survive it. This is going to help immensely! I cant wait to show him. Glad I found your channel we definitely will be using them. Thank you for this. Had to learn about how us dying and we picked up our beds is a bad thing. Oh we also saved our first village from a raid! That was rough. Found a video on an automatic farm and we built that as well. It’s also important to note that if you have subtitles on and you activate a shrieker, there’ll be an exact statement of how close the Warden is to spawning starting with “The Warden approaches” to “The Warden draws near” before The Warden actually spawns.

my theory is that the pillagers weren't the ones who built it, they were just the first to find it. the dark oak structures and camp sight are just the remnants of an ill fated expedition into the ancient city, the only thing left from the teams that went down there.

As Mojang devs said, the Warden isn't supposed to be fought like a Wither, it's supposed to be sent into a pit like a piglin

I just found it so funny how you described the Warden as "excited" about the trapdoor devices. I suddenly thought of it going "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" in its voice, but in an amazed tone. 😂

Digging the Warden into a hole is HILARIOUS

For a building material to use in the deep dark, I'd personally recommend yellow wool. It stands out HARD against the other blacks, greys and blues of the ancient city, letting you know where you've been and where the exit is even on the other side of the ancient city, so you won't lose the exit. Plus you can walk on yellow wool and carpet without triggering sensors, so it stands out and keeps you safe. Yellow wool is also cheap, a large pen of sheep dyed yellow and a pair of shears and you're done.

i found a really useful tactic which was to pack 2 stacks of ender pearls. every time i summoned the warden i would throw a pearl across the city while the warden was spawning. and waiting it out.. worked 100% of the time

I got to my first ancient city the other day without looking into it, and BOY was I terrified. It’s good to go into something blind like this cause my heart was racing the whole time. I’d say mojang did a great job on this! Best experience I’ve had in it in such a long time

I have so much fun building devices to annoy the Warden. My favourite is using red stone to make a bell ring over and over. Never thought of using its own Sculk sensors against it with a trapdoor before. Next time I'm in an Ancient City I'll be trying that one.

I made a butt load of stone hoes and placed a bed nearby as a respawn point and just run in and break every shrieker i can find. Takes a while but after all of the nearby shriekers are gone you can loot in peace

TNT placed in a wool 'box' works very well for situations where sensors and shriekers are too close to disarm, TNT also works great for harvesting XP in the deep dark.

I just went into my first ancient city today, completely blind on what I should do to disarm anything, or what to do if a warden shows up. I kinda just stumbled upon it too, by following a cave. I accidentally spawned one warden, and I couldn’t find him because I didn’t have any night vision positions on me. I tried sneaking up a staircase of wool I made because I knew wool helped with sound, he followed behind me and sniffed right on top of me. I had a full on panic attack I used my water bucket to slow him down, I put on my elytra and started flying blind in a cave without echo location. I was chased out of the ancient city by Idk how many wardens. There was so many sounds roars and screeching my heart was pounding so fucking bad because I had a lot of loot on me. I survived, though I might’ve crawled into the corner of my room into the fetal position once the heartbeats ingame stopped jumping my brain.

I’m sure it’s been said before but the music as you first get to Deep Dark is haunting! Totally sets the mood of ‘be careful or you’re screwed’

It's great how the Warden is easily the most scary mob in Minecraft atm and how dangerous it is, but at the same time while watching your video's and seeing it being dug in or being distracted, it quickly turns cute and/or funny🤣

I love how we’re all just in agreement with the fact that the centre structure is a “portal”. I really hope it becomes one tho ngl. Edit: I get not all people think it’ll be a portal, but my good god it sure looks like it’ll be one!

What me and my brother always do is bridge along the roof of the ancient city all the way up to the portal, then we dig up and make a room with chests, beds, and sometimes a nether portal. Then we stuff everything we have into a chest besides some building blocks and turn up our gamma and run around destroying shriekers and collecting loot. Whenever we find something valuable we go back up to our safe room via stairs and store it away

"What do you do if a Warden summons in?" Clearly you summon another one and control it with your magic staff then get them to fight each other

I was raiding one of these at night with earphones. The fear, the silence, the groans, it was a real adrenaline experience. Peak game.

I didn’t realize this video came out so recently! Fantastic work on this! Random side note, I find ancient cities and all structures in general are more rewarding when I play with a self-imposed "no enchanting table" rule. When you find a really good item, it’s freaking nutso cause you can’t make it yourself easily!

I love the lore that can be guessed with the structure of the city, like for example the citizen trying to figure out how redstone works with simple contraptions as if the "redstone age" was at its debuts

they should make a new room in the stronghold that spawns a map to a ancient city

When it comes to loot, i'd say you completely neglect the sculk itself. You can mine it rapidly with enchanted hoes you find in local loot chests, gives enormous amount of XP and also uncovers ores beneath it, which is significant since diamonds generate with reduced air exposure. Edit: just found out you explain that in another video. Still, worth mentioning here as well.

@8:20 just a side note, I found an Ancient City with a Zombie Spawner directly above it. The bottom of the spawner was open to the city, so Zombies were able to spawn in the location just under the spawner. Just something people should be aware of. though the Biome "Ancient City" won't spawn anything other than the Warden, the area outside of the city, and is NOT Deep Dark, can spawn monsters, so sometimes monsters will wander in. Mining outside of the city can increase the chance of getting monsters in the city.

Other than refrigerator lore, snowballs are there as a basic contingency for distracting the warden

Have you not found the Catacombs yet? Zombie and Skeleton heads all over along with other loot. and candle galore. Lots of Smooth stone and polished andesite, Bloody cobble stone.

Essentially the primary name of the game is what is effectively disabling the alarm systems of the city. Ypu have to be REALLY careful to check everywhere inside *and* outside the structure you're trying to loot, because if not sensors could trigger shriekers outside of the structure you're in. I kinda learned this the hard way as I had looted the majority of the city without much of a hitch, only for me to place a torch and accidentally trigger a shrieker that I hadn't seen and spawning the warden. I died shortly after. I managed to get all my stuff back, but yeah, you can't take *any* chances with this place.

Ancient Cities are my new early game target. As soon as I have iron tools, in fact. The Swift Sneak and mending items are too useful to ignore, so Elytra's and Night Vision is out of the question for me. So it's torches all the way, lol. For me, pockets of lava are still the most dangerous thing in Ancient Cities. Wardens spawning there are pretty easy to avoid as shown in the video. Where Wardens are a big problem is in the Deep Dark caves. I have mistakenly run into small dead end caves with the Warden chasing me many times due to the Darkness effect and have been killed because even an Efficiency V diamond pickaxe will not allow for blind panic digging 20 blocks away through Deepslate in time to avoid two Sonic attacks. It's less of a problem once you get Swift Sneak III since you can sneak away faster than the Warden walks, but because you usually have to search those caves to find an Ancient City to get Swift Sneak it's a bit of a catch 22 (short of waiting until late game to do it). There's currently a bug in Java Edition (MC-255639) where camp sites are currently generating incorrectly. It's unfortunate because worlds with these incorrect versions cannot be fixed short of the player fixing them themselves or restarting the world when the bug finally does get fixed.

That’s funny “the deep dark can’t spawn any mobs” I trusted your advice on that and it bit me in the ass. My first deep dark had a ton of mobs in it, there were even mob spawners out in the open

Interesting side note... You can use the snowballs to distract the warden... changing its direction When it is coming at you...

I can't tell you how many times I've had a shrieker that was hidden in a wall about 2 blocks in and I could not do anything around it without destroying it. So I used tnt

nothing scarier than forgetting to enable mob audio after disabling it for a gold farm, then raiding an ancient city and having half my health instantly taken away from the warden's ranged attack

Warden loves his noise making toys

I have finally amassed enough end crystals (in fact, i have gotten over 4 double chest worth of end crystals) to take on the warden. Using downgrading technique I have around 4 shulker boxes worth of enchanted golden apple. Raid farm gave me endless supply of totem of undying. Now it is time to raid the ancienty city.

I'd like to note that when you said the only danger in the shriekers, that is not technically correct. Mobs from outside the biome can make there way in near the edges or from above you. I have had Skeletons, Zombies and Creepers suddenly appear before, from an overhang or water column. Another danger is Lava from either above dropping down or pools below, so watching where you step is also important.

When I found the blocks in the ancient city while mining for diamond, then finding the warden was defiantly a scare for me lolol. I never knew about it.

This is actualy a great way of looting. I always flew around with an elytra break the chest and flew to the next. Spawned like 8 wardons per city but it worked (most of the time)

Its it just as efficient to use carpet instead of wool blocks? Im gonna try an find an ancient city in my server here soon but unsure which one to bring. Carpet or wool? Or both?

I like to bring ender pearls so if i mess up and a warden spawns, you can just pearl out. Simple, silent and very effective.
