I rarely leave comments under videos, you may not even read this, but i wanted to say that your content is always something that is worth watching, learning from, and overall something a person can always look forward to. You and M539 inspire me to take care of my own 30 year old bmw. Take care friend, and thank you for your effort. I wish the best for you in everything.
Hey Aspen, I just want to say thank you for such a lovely comment. I always try to read and reply to all of the comments that arrive not long after the episode goes live. And with comments like yours, its an absolute joy. So thank you again for going outside of your norm to leave one. It really means a lot. Take care and all the best.
@@RestoreItjust like a BMW to break down even when not being used. Most cars you can drive through the mud and they come out without a problem. A BMW however; you drop even the smallest grain of sand into it and it starts crumbling to pieces.
Because of the heat I would go with the taupe color back. It would make the interior brighter as well as cooler. The headliner failed not because of bad glue but rather the intermediate foam layer degraded and the glue no longer had anything to stick to. Be sure to scrutinize your sunroof drain hoses as this would be the best time for replacing them due to drying out and cracking in the future. Seen too many people make this mistake over the years with restorations. You remind me of me at your age. At 62 still have my day job working on cars even though I don't have to anymore.
Brilliant comment, thanks, Dons! Great points on the headliner and drain holes, I'll make sure I don't forget. I love that you're still working on cars even though you don't have to. I'll be the same I'm sure. Thanks again.
I still remember that I started watching your videos a few years ago. I really learned so much from these videos. videos like this made me start overhauling and selling mopeds, because they are nice and small and you don't need a large workshop for them. but now I'm tired of mopeds and I bought my first e30!! I'm really looking forward to working on it :)
Station wagons are awesome. With the rise in popularity of small compact SUV, its easy to see why these are more sought after. I'm happy to see yours back. And i would stick with the original headliner color, as it fits better with the rest of the plastic
I'm all good thanks Graham, there have been many things to sort out behind the scenes, but I think I'll be back for good from now on. Glad to see you're still here after 5 years! Thanks a bunch, mate.
Glad you're back Steve! For color, I would definitely stay original. Black would make for a very dark look to the interior as well as likely trap more heat. Seems like the original gray was a shade or two lighter underneath the grab handle mounts. Suppose that could be due to dirt, time and sun.
Cheers, Jeff! Glad to to be back at it with the E30s. I think you're spot on about black and about the true colour being behind the grab handles ect... It's a great point and I'll bear that in mind when looking for the new stuff. Thanks again mate!
Hey, Michael! Don't worry, from this video on I will be more consistent than ever! I've been working towards this moment for about the entire time I've had the channel. With the new workshop done, It's now time to make some content!
The best channel for car restoration is back! Hello Roman, I’m very glad to see you, good luck with your new project, I’m looking forward to the next video. With respect and best wishes Alexey 👍
Hi! I was so happy when I saw that you’d uploaded a new video! I absolutely love watching your amazing restorations. Your meticulous approach and your attention to detail is wonderful to see. This may sound strange but watching your videos are like therapy for me, they reduce my stress levels considerably. I suffer a bit from OCD so watching you work really helps with that. I especially love the videos of you restoring cars. Have you ever seen a RU-vid channel called ‘Cortina City’? If you enjoy car restorations then I highly recommend it. Anyway thanks for all you do in making these videos, they make me (and I’m sure many others) very happy! All the best Howard.
Hey Howard, I often joke about having OCD, and I shouldn't really. I'm 99% sure I don't actually have it, but I'm really pleased to hear it help you with yours. I'm also glad you enjoy the car stuff especially, because there's going to be a lot of it coming your way. I haven't heard of that channel, but I'll be sure to check them out. Thanks for the recommendation and the lovely comment!
Well, it wont stop until this car is done, and as soon as it is, I'm going to continue working on the 325i sport until its finished. There is so much to come! :D
@@freedomwriter1995 pro tip, best not to come to a BMW enthusiast literally "restore" channel and attempt to rag on BMW's. Many things are great, some are great beyond their time.
@@J5L5M6 Sorry. It is just, my dad was real into cars. He knew more about them then most people. From his own knowledge and experiences, BMW's tended to break down and require a lot more maintenance then most other vehicle brands.
Stay with the OEM colour unless you are changing the seats, trim, door cards and carpet. Awesome content btw I wish you were making these videos when I owned my E30, E28 and Volvo 240 every job you are showing us how to do was a job that at least one of my cars needed doing. I just had too much going on and the Haynes manuals were only getting me so far. I had to get rid of all of them in the end 😢. Keep making these videos you are an invaluable asset to the E30 community.
Bit late, but I would prefer the original gray. It would match the rest of the car interior trim, and would make the interior have an overall lighter look. Welcome back!
Black headlning is nice (the headlining on my Mercedes W204 is black) but I think it would be best to keep it the original colour. It is obvious that the foam has just disintegrated.
I'd have to redo the whole interior in black leather, and black carpet, but thats me. What I did with the A4 I'm restoring. I HATE headliner work. Removed it and reinstalled myself, and that was not easy. Yours went pretty smooth.
The glue on headliners does not fail, the foam breaks down from age and heat. Then the foam glued to the headliner separates from the rest of the foam attached to the backing material.
Glad you are back on a single project and hoping to see this taken to the finished state. I loved the workshop series too, lot to learn from it, but admittedly already mostly outside of a hobbyist budget, but quite the dream stuff ;) This car does look a decent foundation. Eventhough the engine and trans was swapped (still reversible) staying with the original headliner material will likely bring you more cash. Initially I though you’ll use this the move stuff around and that’s why the priority was upped, but if you are not keeping it, original is the way to go.
Thanks, Devision. This one is getting finished ASAP. It certainly won't be as in-depth as the Sport, but as soon as it's good enough for sale, it can go and the main project will continue until completion. Which has been the main priority for way too long now. I may put its original engine back in, this is an interesting idea. It has undergone a complete nut and bolt restoration and overhaul. So would go well with the engine bay. I did use this car for exactly that before I moved to Spain and not long after moving there, I bought a Spanish car due to being pulled over so many times(being in a UK-plated car). Thanks again!
Hi Steve, you probably know already, but just in case, I have replaced 3 headlinings now and have used Martrim for the fabrics and glue. They are really helpful and nice people to deal with. Always nice to see a new video.
Regarding headliner color, from experience, change it and the sun visors to black and preferably the A-pillar. Create a 'black perifephery" in front of you. When the sun glares and you put the visor down the positive effect is maximized as opposed to light color interior. Cheers🤙🏻
Just made the decision to go black on my headliner for my SAAB 900 resto. My headliner material is paperboard and unfortunately it cracked due to stress at the skinny bits when removing. I went with black specifically to better hide the fixes I made as, although the fixes are pretty decent, they may be seen with a lighter material. I have biege trim (handles, sun shades, and sunroof trim) similar to you have and I will admit, I'm anxious to see the final result. I'm just finishing up final body work and paint, and haven't re-installed anything just yet. I have a feeling that the black will make the cabin of my SAAB feel smaller, but hopefully more cozy. We'll see...
Chose the color you like or think others will like in case you decide to sell it. Just make sure and remove all the old foam before you try to adhere a new cloth in or it will fail in no time. Tips a soft wire brush with light pressure makes fast work of it.
Yay ,good to see you back working on the Touring. I’d say stick to the original colour, yes i like the idea of black, but having followed you for what seems like years now, and knowing your attention to detail, i think you wouldn’t be able to leave it at that, and sun visors and other bits of trim would have to be changed as well. Given that you’re going to sell, i would do the minimum amount of required jobs, but with your usual best work. Just my thoughts. Steve
When it comes to the color .... definitely sticking to the original. That silver already wasn't so often sold compared to the red and black ones back in the days (at least here in Bavaria), so it's beginning to become somewhat exotic, and I like that decent, elegant color on the otherwise a bit .... uhm, "rural" E30s ... Thanks for sharing. Edit: I'm looking forward to what You'll turn towards next in terms of restoration (after the 325 will be done).
Go black for a sporty look! Do you plan on reusing the original fabric or use new one? Could be interesting to see either the dyeing process or if it’s a new one, how to sew it nice for the sunroof !
personally i would say to keep the headliner the original color black headliners kill the sensation of space in cars for me and especially in a wagon doesnt make sense
Since you're that far in, be sure that you take the time to clean your sunroof drain channels - there's a few ways to do it but typically the "nicest" way is to use thin plastic tubing attached to a vacuum to suck as you feed it down the drain, as you don't want to push the junk all to one place only to find a blockage you can't remove.
Original colour for headliner. - if you can source it. I hope the sunroof panel is ok? Great content thanks and will benchmark for jobs on my 318i Touring.
Thanks, Simon. Yes, choosing the colour is one thing, finding it is another. The sunroof panel is a surprisingly great condition, as is the rest of the roof.
Was going to post exactly that. It is the foam that fails, and is the curse of a vast number of 1990s vehicles. The problem is similar to the failure of the foam rings that were used on stereo speakers, generally woofers, in years past. As for the repairs, I have never seen one where the new fabric fits as smoothly as the original.
I like to keep things OEM or OEM+, but from the first time I sat in a car with black headliner, I could never go back. White or light headliners look cheap and tacky to me, and I suspect some period correct black headliner will look the part in this e30
I just replied to a comment saying the exact opposite thing, which has me convinced. Now I'm unsure again, haha. Thanks for the comment, TrippyShrimp, much appreciated!
Personally, i'd go for a black headliner. I know it's not original, but i always hate how lighter colours show up the marks and i think they end up looking worse, quicker.
That desiccated foam is really toxic stuff. It is recommended to use a respirator when dealing with it as it gets airborne and easily into the lungs where it can wreak havoc. As for the headliner, a black one would darken the interior quite a bit versus the light and airy factory color, which to me looks great.
I had two, now I only have the one. The one I should have stuck with all along, but things don't always go to plan. Don't worry, as soon as this is done, the main project will be getting finished.
