Dig the collection update videos. Picked up a lot of these myself (Tar, Fabelmans, Banshees, Marcel). Never seen Prince of Egypt either so may get and also the Cinderella 4K when goes on sale wide later this year.
Thanks, AJ. Glad you enjoy the collection update videos. I'm gonna try to make one of these at least once a month. Yeah I recommend picking up Cinderella 4k when it releases wide. I watched it last night, and it looks wonderful
Hi, DJ! I'm a huge Disney fan, especially of their older work. The first film my parents took me to see in a theater was Disney's "The Jungle Book" when it came out in 1967 (I was 5). I was singing "The Bare Necessities" for days after that. They also took me to see the rerelease of "Sword in the Stone" among others. I recently bought the 2018 crime thriller "Destroyer" starring Nicole Kidman after hearing some great things about it. It's very clever, and I loved it! And yesterday I picked up Criterion's "The Bad Sleep Well," directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiru Mifune. I've never seen it, but it's supposed to be pretty good.
That's awesome. I'ld love a change to see some of Disney's Golden Age classics in the theater. I'm a big fan of that stuff too. Always great to hear from another Disney fan. What would you say are your favorites besides Jungle Book?
@@FilmsByColor I believe "Mary Poppins" was Disney's crowning achievement, and it also happens to be my second favorite film of all time (just behind "Meet Me in St. Louis"). However, my favorite totally animated Disney feature is "101 Dalmatians," which my parents also took me to see on its rerelease. I particularly love the look of the film. Beyond that, I enjoy many of the Disney features and short subjects from the '30s through the '60s (and later ones, too, of course). Have a great weekend.
Oh Prince of Egypt is great. Surprised you haven't seen it before, but to be fair, dreamworks didn't release a blu-ray of it until 2016-2017, something like that. But yeah, great film, in my top 5. Just rewatched it last Passover. Hope you enjoy it.
I do like the movie haul videos because it reminds us of films we might have forgotten to pick up. I've been wanting to upgrade to the 4k of Prince of Egypt because I only have the signature series DVD with the gold case (still probably going to keep it). Got Elvis last November and found The Magnificent Seven 4 movie Blu-ray collection for $10 at a local store. Lilo & Stitch is one of Disney's best (my opinion).
Cool, glad these videos are helpful. I'm gonna try to make one of these at least once a month. Which movies are included in the Magnificent Seven 4 movie collection? I might have to look into that.
@@FilmsByColor the set includes the original film along with The Return of the Magnificent Seven, Guns of the Magnificent Seven and The Magnificent Seven Ride. The second film still has Yul Brynner in it and the picture/sound quality is actually really good for the sequels.
WOW, DJ, I've stopped collecting other distributors physical media and decided several years ago to concentrate solely on completing the Criterion collection, which I've now done. The only exception, I've made is maybe once in a blue moon pick up some releases from KINO during their sales, especially film noir releases. I've stopped buying DVD/BR of Hollywood classics and new movies, etc. simply because I've got so much already and no space to store anything anymore. But I must say, that RAN release from Lionsgate looks so impressive that I might make an exception although, I initially refused to get the Studio Canal/Lionsgate version of RAN BR when it came out because they forced Criterion to cancelled their RAN Blu-Ray release in May 2009 which was a shame, so many great releases went OOP because of Studio Canal/Lionsgate deal. A lot of interesting choices in animation films.
Yeah I totally understand that. You've got your hands full with all the Criterion releases coming out every month. Can't believe you have a complete Criterion Collection. That's so awesome. Congrats, man! I'm with you on the Studio Canal titles. Such a bummer that Criterion lost the rights. I would love Criterion blu-rays for all of those.
Most of the Disney/Pixar/Dreamworks output I have seen but owning them is a different scenario. My main line Walt Disney Animation collection is nearly complete also. I had an advantage because I got a box set 5 years ago that collected every WDA film released at the time, starting with Snow White and finishing with Moana. Except Winnie The Pooh 2011 for some reason. I had to get that separately. But now I'm slightly behind, needing all the new releases from Frozen II to Strange World. There's also at least 8 Pixar films I'm missing. And I have practically nothing from Disney Toons. (Goofy Movie, DTV stuff, etc) For the longest time I hardly owned any Dreamworks Animation films but I started to try playing catch up a few years back. I'm still not close to completion on those.
I’ve been reluctant on getting the Ran 4k because I heard though the resolution is amazing the color grading is drab and muted compared to the studio canal Blu-ray which is closer to the original
You forgot to link the slipcover seller! I just picked up Ran in the last few weeks as well. Great looking steelbook. Looking forward to watching soon, I have to get through a few more Kurosawa first.
@@FilmsByColor so far I’ve watched Seven Samurai, Rashoman and High and Low this year. I don’t known if you necessarily need to watch them before Ran. I just wanted to watch some of his early stuff before I got into 80’s film. Next up for me is Ikiru, Throne of Blood, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. Hopefully I will watch them all before the end of May!
RAN is arguably neck and neck with The Seven Samurai as Kurosawa’s masterpiece. Glorious film and surprised you hadn’t heard about the first run of this beautiful steelbook. The aspects of King Lear were only added close to filming. This story is mainly based on the feudal lord Mōri Motonari, from 15th century Japan.
Oh interesting. Thanks for that background info. I'm really looking forward to checking it out and will probably do so very soon. How does the 4k Transfer look?
I would like to see more all encompassing collection update videos. The Criterion videos are fine but there’s a limited appeal for me because I don’t collect that label as frequently as DJ and Conner do. Something like this I prefer due to the variety.
Thanks for the feedback, Stephen. I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed this! I definitely want to make more of these kinds of collection update vids. At least one a month would be good I think.
Not bad at all! That Ran Steel book is beautiful. Exceptions to the rule are always good....wait, no, that's not accurate at all. hahaha Prince of Egypt was one of my favorite musicals so I hope you like it (Through Heaven's Eyes is one of the most uplifting songs)! Would really like to hear you cover it, but glad you watched the 1959 Ben Hur. I shared Conner's enthusiasm for it. I thought it was a 10/10. And I completely forgot about Magnificent Seven! I think that's my favorite western! It's not a great movie imo but it's a wholesome brotherhood type movie. Have you heard Brothers by Iced Earth? It's a kinda cheesy song but it's gotta uplifting friendship appeal that might give you an idea of what you're in store for. Unless I'm misremembering. I really liked that movie! I didn't see any of the Oscars but I enjoyed hearing Grace and your predictions and recap. Take care, DJ. Of your hair! Admire your excellent hairline. I'm looking at my fallen hair right now. haha Also, I watched Bob Ross! And Bugs Life was my second favorite Pixar movie after Wall-E! I didn't think many liked that movie. Sweet!
Thanks, John! Yeah I need to finally watch Prince of Egypt. Hopefully I can get to that one soon. Would you rank that as your favorite DreamWorks movie?
@@FilmsByColor Yes, at least of the ones I've seen. I looked up a list of DreamWorks movies to answer, and then started looking up lists of animated movies in general to see where it ranked. haha Don't want to say anymore until you've seen it, so I hope you enjoy. Hope you and your family are having a Happy Friday!
Disney’s experimental era (The 2000’s) isn’t perfect but I do find it to be a very interesting time for the company’s animation side. In certain circles this era is starting to get a lot more love and support now that the films are old enough to qualify as nostalgic, so the generation that grew up on them can voice their enthusiasm and put a spotlight on the merits of these films. Current Disney/Pixar isn’t awful but there is a bland sameness to it. Even when they do something good and I like, I’m never in any rush to see it again. The 2000’s films are interesting to talk about, even when they miss. And regarding the subject of Lilo & Stitch there are three DTV sequels; Stitch Has a Glitch, Stitch: The Movie and Leroy & Stitch. Stitch Has a Glitch is not related to the TV show. The other two films are and serve as the shows pilot and finale respectively.
I agree with your thoughts about the current Disney era. Solid movies, but nothing really stands out from the pack. I love how completely different every movie in the Experimental Era feels. So much diversity. Some movies from that era like Chicken Little and Emperor's New Groove don't even feel like Disney movies which is really cool. Thanks for the correction on the Stitch sequels. I had a feeling while I was saying it that I was mixing up Stitch Has a Glitch with another movie. I always forget about Stitch: The Movie. Such a weird title.
That's great to here! Do you have some you recommend? I've seen (and loved) a few like Ernest & Celestine and Kirikou and the Sorceress, and I bought A Cat in Paris but haven't watched it yet. I also noticed April and the Extraordinary World is on the Criterion Channel which looks amazing. I gotta watch that one before it leaves.
