I know the pain your going through, but multiple that by 4. Yes, hubby and I have taken 4 kids camping/4wding in a 80 series land cruiser and did so successfully for numerous of years. Nearly 14 years on and still have same cruiser now down to 2 kids. So enjoy and good luck
I bought a camper trailer for this very reason. My set up for single camping is portable and not fixed to the car and the camper trailer takes up the duties for 5 of us and the dog.
OMG😂😂🤣🤣 baby in the draw. LMAO. Reminds me of "A Quiet Place II" movie. You're hilarious mate, and you're wife went along with it, good on her. Something for Bill to watch later.
Love the Bill in the draw ideas. You can stuff a few odds and sods down the sides. Turn the radio up and you don't hear Bill for an hour or two.... Joking 😂😂😂😂 Great job Harry... Cheers Mark....
Congratulations Harry and Sam! Bill looks great and is a wonderful addition to your family. I’m sure Fred will also love and protect him as much as you both do.
Congratuations. Must admit - when I got to ~20mins and you had spare room in that drawer I thought, "he hasn't thought of all the crap you need when you camp with a bub" - hope you've got more space!
Love the content mate and all the best with the little one!! This is the problem with overdoing your rig when kids come along. It's not just a baby seat but all the stuff that goes with them. Usually another baby at some point, prams, portable cots, scooters, bikes, toys, carriers, nappy bags...the list goes on. That's why we went to a light weight camper trailer. The kitchen is so much better than anything you can put in the back of a car, water storage, sleeping area, batteries, fridge, storage. Everything rolled into one small camper. Then the car stays free for the pram, clothing, bikes, scooters or whatever else you want to bring. Also not lugging all that stuff around when you don't need it. Would never go back to camping out of the car and having to play tetris all day.
Drawers are simply incompatible with a dual purpose family 4by and a large dog. On the plus side, you save a bunch of weight and fuel not carrying them and all the stuff in them day in day out.
Totally understand your pain Harry, I have two kids. I ended up making a false removable false floor to put over the seats when folded down. False floor with everything on topwhen no kids and nothing with kids but have a trailer instead.
I don't understand why so many people use the hand controllers that winches come with, just hard wire that sucker and have in cab switches, no batteries to go flat, no controller to have within reach, etc.
Things are always changing and evolving. Hope the changes suit you well. We’ve done two adults a toddler and a lurcher almost as tall as Fred in my old short wheelbase series Landrover soft top.
Be very careful with what kind of gear you keep permanently loose in the back seat area with Bill in the car. I thought I saw your tool bag under the car seat. In case of an accident (god forbid), loose items can/will get tossed around and you don’t want any of that landing on the little guy. Other than that great job reorganising.
Figured out what those metal spanner key things are. They are the adjuster keys for your shocks. Might be an idea to keep them if you intend on adjusting them and want to use the right tool.
Option 1 - put the baby in a kennel for the weekend. Option 2 - harness Fred in the back seat. He will be the best big brother and protector a kid could have.
We did it for 18 months, now we have another one coming and the poor dog is going to struggle with no place to sit. @fire to fork you will be amazed how good Fred will be with a baby, from experience, big dogs tend to be a lot better with them than little dogs.
Hi after watching the video on u installing the drawers and I’m think about going from Ute to a wagon. I was thinking of have the same set up but make the draws removable. So u could have 3 2 or just one. As I have the same problem with having a dog.
Have you considered splitting the rear seats as in Fred's side and the baby's side with some sort of divider in between them? Like a kennel of some sort for fred
Great video very insightful thanks Harry! A potential place for the first aid kits is attached (around the fridge strap or velcro) to the front of your fridge. Where your bottle opener is.
Harry, get a Doona+ (car seat, capsule, stroller thing) had the same space predicament 8 months ago with the new arrival and it is Amazing... congrats on the birth of your Son 🍺👍
I love your optimism on what you think you are able to still do with the bub. in saying that, can't wait for the vid 6 months after the birth, fun times ahead brother.
Right you are massively over thinking this , how often are you planning to family camp ? If only 3/4 times a year you will manage you just do , your Prado is your work vehicle which is what it will be the majority of the time and just tie fred up in the back he will learn new rules quick enough . We have 2 kids and a third on the way and for camping trips have a LWB Paj and we manage , no we cope and it’s great fun , don’t get hung up on having it all packed away because when you have kids you will realise nothing goes to plan . Just enjoy being a dad and having fun
We plan to do 12-20 trips a year, we also need to be able to fit a pram, dog and a kid (impossible, even with a travel pram in the old setup). I’d also far prefer to do this early and fine tune it before we have a 2nd kid (2 kids and Fred can never fit on the back seat). Family camping is a huge part of my job, so I want to do it as best I can.
Alright.... here's the real questions the people want to know. Colonial Cans. 360 degree top. Yea or Nay? Initially I thought it was a little weird, but then I came to really like it...when they took it away, I really missed it.
I feel you mate!! When we had our boy i had to fully remove my draws, in a GQ, for access to the child restraint point. Lost so much useful storage. I have had a few thoughts on redesign but am yet to pull the trigger on a rebuild. Also we have a 46kg bull arab/dane cross and a Bandog cross puppy that will probably hit 35kgs.. so im gonna have to get budget friendly creative, will probably end up with a small trailer to be honest... oh well thats future Sams problem for now 😅
We have been going through the same conundrum with our family of big dog and baby. Still working out things but it is an interesting puzzle to figure out for sure.
Congrats on the bub once again, it gets a whole lot trickier with kids even more with dogs as well . gotta take a stroller and all that too. thats why dual cab utes are so popular.
I basicly keep the bare basics in my Patrol so can fit 2 adults, child and two staffies in the rear behind cargo barrier. The rest goes in the camper fridge food etc. Even though i would like a 35L or so fridge for the patrol for the day trips or weekends away with the boys. Defo works for us! The camper mainly opened up so much can just leave it packed hook up and go. No needing to load tents and swags and tables and everything into the nesrly already overloaded tow vehicle.
We also use an extension strap for the baby seat. Alot to think about. Let us know ya first trip camping with a baby haha ours wss 5months old. Was an eye opener hahaha
i have the Drifta 3 in 1 drawer system (fridge slide/two drawers) for camping , then can pull all out in 5 minutes when i need space for work and being a prado, going to soccer and coles...ha ha
Can we just take a note of the comment “when l go away without the baby, which will happen a lot” and come back to it in a couple of years and see how that panned out … 🤣🤣
That was a lot of effort for what should have been a very simple solution… here’s how I would have done it; Sam and Bill in the back seat, Fred in the front seat, Harry drives. Problem solved 😉
When I see what you have to cull and what you can carry I think you would have been better off with a Hilux, canopy, trundle draw and under tray toolboxes + water tank.
I won’t have the family on gnarly trips, so it’s not an issue. And I have my little army trailer which is phenomenal for remote solo touring- puts the weight on a 3rd axle, weighs nothing, is removable, carries more, handles better and is modular. I have tried both and far prefer the Prado setup. It’s not for everyone, but it is for me
haha Classic harry. Love the vid and congratulations on the growing family. I just did a week in the Simpson with 2 kids in a Fortuner. It can be done and we ate like kings. I did almost the exact change you did with my Drawers. love it now though so much better and heaps of day to day room.
Reminds me I'm ready for a reorganisation 😅 you should check out the oztrail stool/side table. On sale at anafonda for $25 down from $80. I've had one for a few years and very handy so I got a 2nd one. Has a solid side so would be a bit better as a table for your box holder
Congratulations guys. By the way love your new baby capsule design. I’m sure it’ll prove to be a hit in the camping fraternity. Make sure you patent it quickly. 😂😂 By the way where did you buy the Frontrunner boxes from.
If your car has a split rear seat, why don’t you take one out & put storage in it’s place... then you can still have all you need, Fred in the back & room for the child.
just a thought, but I was thinking it might be handy to keep either the sat phone or PLB within arms reach while driving, just in case the worst happens and you’re trapped, that’s where I keep mine
I reckon you will be buying a 79 before this car hits 10 years. There is a reason for them, exactly what you need atm. Lots of storage in two separate sections.
@@SirLuisBarrera Because I want something comfortable, quiet, good on fuel with modern electronics, safety equipment and nice to drive on long journeys. Not a tin shed on leaf springs with mismatched diffs
Hey Harry, With the PLB - mine came with an arm band pouch for hiking. I have this looped around the passenger side sun visor so it is within arms reach of the driver's seat. Up out of the way and gives me peace of mind in case I bin it while out on my own... Congrats both on Bill!
I don't have kids but I've seen plenty of them and I'm certain the baby would fit in that space you were trying to lift Fred up to. That'd buy you at least a couple of years. Make that box up as a crib and slid it up there out of the way. Probably leave the lid off though.
Firstly congratulations to you both on your first child. Welcome to parenthood 😵💫🥴😵💫🥴😁. Secondly great video on been adaptable and cleaning out junk of essentials. Thirdly great setup at the back of the rig. Well done 👍🏼🍺🍺🍺😎
