Thanks for this Max, I already run a fair bit and agree with a lot you say, respect to you I’ve only done a couple of half marathons. The best line was ‘these aren’t my running clothes, these are my talking about running clothes’. There was a 60’s American sit com where all the men wore smart suits, ‘this is my oil change suit’., gave me a chuckle, I’ll get my coat.
I've been running for 6-7 years now, but still watched your whole video. I think you've done a great job here for new runners. There's a surprising amount of stuff that's good to know instead of learning the hard way.
Your collection of running shoes puts mine to shame! I kinda wish that I'd watched a video like this when I started running because I ended up making it up as I went along, and now almost certainly have some very bad habits. .. and very sore knees!
Utterly brilliant! Thanks, Max. You answered all of my questions and then some. Your knowledge, experience and enthusiasm came across so well. For what it's worth, the video seemed to finish quickly too . I hope that it gets the number of viewers it deserves. Great stuff!
When I started I was sold correction trainers too and hated them. Switched to very minimal ultra low drop Inov8 Road X 233 shoes which I love (something like a 4 mm drop I think and very light and thin). Slowed me down but I *had* to think about my gait more. I'm still slow and rubbish 7 years later (and I'm 97KG these days), but I still love those shoes. Sadly they don't make them any more.
Oddly enough I have just started running so this is a timely video. I have decided to follow a couch to 5k regime which is getting me moving but not killing me yet, the technique information you have shared will be put into practice whilst I build up to 5k so hopefully I will get there with a bit of form and can push on to bigger distances. On deliberate practice, Bounce by Mathew Syed is a brilliant book and a real eye opener on the impact of deliberate practice vs the perception of talent. A great read if you get the chance.
Windchill on your legs isn't a thing because your legs are heating like mad while you run. Active muscles put out so much heat, its insane. By the very same logic do people kayaking wear warmer legwear, but just the same tops in winter. Do a lot of work with your core and arms, they'll feel warm right through a snowstorm. The stiller you are, the colder you get (ridiculous temperatures excluded, obviously).
I have zero interest in running........but thoroughly enjoyed this video, I think that says something about how engaging you are in front of the camera! I keep eyeing the weights in the workshop so am looking forward to a resistance training video.
Thank you very much, I'm delighted anyone found this one interesting. I'm working on the strength video now, but having seen a couple of your videos I'm pretty sure I have nothing to teach you about strength training!
Cheers Max, brilliant as usual! Looks like you visited all the same rabbit holes I did when I started out. Nice to see a video that dips into a bit of everything you might need to know without having to go 15 different places 👍
Ha! Your story of misery in bad weather when poorly prepared and equipped reminded me so much of my attempts at long distance cycling. Superb info. The video flew by. I remember paying £30 for a decent pair of Nike running shoes many moons ago, and I have just sort of accepted that shoes were more expensive these days. I should hunt around a bit more and save some money. I spent many years running wearing a pair of snug-but-not-tight speedos under a pair of £5 swimming shorts from ASDA, and a thin cotton T-shirt. But only in good weather. I need a bit of protection from cold, so for chilly, windy days I do apreciate a good pair of running tights. But good comfy running tights can be tricky to find, and have seams in the wrong places which prevent the material from stretching. Sub are particularly bad for this (though they are often cheap). I'd move the gloves to the essential list, but then again, I live further North! Depending on where I go running and who I am with, I would take a phone, but turned off and inside a plastic sandwich bag, for emergencies. I'm one of those that hates the gels. I buy those cheap glucose/Dextrose tablets. I used to have problems with cramping, but not so much now I take those with me. Yes, self-control and avoiding injury is paramount! And so difficult.
Max I owe you a big debt, I tried lacing a pair of my everyday walk around shoes by skipping the crossover of the laces and what a difference, this and the set of orthopedic insoles I had and I can make it through the day so much better now. My legs are not too happy yet cause my gait is so different but one more week and this will have turned back the clock about five years. Thank you. Soon I go to my orthopedist and I will let him know how we solved my bodies problems as far as my feet to the middle of my shoulder blades, but after 72 years of wear not much left to work with but I still keepin on truckin
Great Job Max, because its about a different subject I managed to get my wife watch the video with interest (I did also get her to watch the Gardening stuff) although I love the metalworking and property maintenance content, that sort of leaves her cold. Ive never run before but you have made me consider it, We all need to burn off those COVID Bellies and I cant face a over pack Gym. Thanks again keep up the good work.
Watched and enjoyed every second of this vid & learned so much. Thank you for taking the time to film this & especially for sharing your hard earned experience of becoming a marathon runner ❤️✖️
As I have asthma I do not think that I will ever get up to the levels you have, do you think it would be sensible for me to scale back and say start very small with running half mile then working up to a mile etc.
Totally, when I decided to do it properly I started with walking, it was always my heart and lungs that were holding me back but with plenty of caution I worked up to running and took it from there. Just a case of gently does it!
Interesting to hear the difference real footwear makes. I tried running in converse pumps and as you state, quickly got injured so went back to walking, Inspiring video.
I found this a superb guidance video on running. Thank you for taking the time. The shoes are especially interesting as I roll my feet and already have weak ligaments, which explains the injuries in the past when I tried running a few years back. I'm going to use the couch to 5K app to begin with, as I'm way off tempo runs and distance etc. Thanks again.
Genuinely a fantastic video, I watched it all. I don't plan on running but this video gives you all the information you could possibly need. I can't wait for the strength training video to come next.
Max your a star..... I thoroughly enjoyed that and hadn't expected it from you! I stick to speed walking as I always end up with shin-splints when I start to run again, speed walking works for me, although now at 60 plus I've noticed I've been slowing over the past few years; still manage 10 miles once a week and 3 or 4 at 4 miles.. L@@King G@@D; keep it up mate 👍🏻
1:06 - thought about keto / fasted training & getting your body fat adapted?? No need for gels, every gramme of fat you carry has 9 calories, and much healthier to boot!
I did do both keto and fasted training for a while and it helped me lose weight quickly, but once I made the decision to go for the marathon I had to stop losing weight and start consuming carbs again just to keep up the intensity of training!
Any advice from people here in the comments section (Or Max if you have time) on how to find the hugely discounted shoes on eBay? Is there a time when shoes are released ? The main thing in me not buying decent shoes is their prohibitive cost so I have compromising footwear. Thanks for the vid Max, you're inspiring !
Interim comment 5:00 Max I thought you were going to say 'I was running along a road with my fleece joggers and coat sodden so I said "bugger it!" ', took all the clothes off, except your walking boots and threw them in the ditch. But you just said you were feeling miserable. lol (I am actually taking your vid seriously as I run every day and I bet I am going to learn a thing or two here. Cheers Now I have watched the lot:great advice and I have learned a few things i will put into practice. One thing was I now have an explanation for past deep-in-hip muscle "stretch-tear'y" shocks - it must be top of IT Band pulled. Well Worth the watch!
Respect man gives me inspiration.I have been jogging for a hobby and health and I am close to your shape haha but just got to 5.5 miles a day 5 days a week if I can(As long as not suffering injuries or hangovers).
It’s not landrovers it’s not smithing it’s not steam engines it’s not motorbikes or driving tips. Excellent video max refreshingly different and wise words from someone I like ,who’s recently been there and done it. Jeff invited me out on a run( he was a fanatic) in 1981, I wore my army boots! Bout time I got a bit of real exercise going again. Landrover Pilates doesn’t really cut it. Nice one
I watched it all, even though I can't run. My knees couldn't handle it. I do walk, tho and do some weight training. I think some of your underlying concepts are helpful for other disciplines. So I enjoyed and appreciated this video.
I can see why you put on your 'talking about running' clothes. You can't rock normal streetwear when you're setting out on a 90 minute monologue. You have a very listenable manner, I always find your videos easy to stick with.
For some reason it won't let me logon to your patron...the reason is I am an IT dinosaur. Glad you finally got things sorted with Planning what a relief, I hope you celebrated. Would love to watch video on your new water system if possible.
This is great... I'm working on improving my fitness... chose cycling as the first approach.... now doing a minimum of 18 miles a week on my commute.... the heart rate watch has been a great tool.... on day one it took 18 minutes to get to work, and my peak heart rate was 210.... 8 weeks in, and I'm doing it in 14 minutes, and peak heart rate is 180.... it's great to have metrics!
Another great video. I can vouch for the neoprene IT band straps. They were a game changer for me when I was nearly going to give up on ever running again...
I loved this. I must admit that I haven't watched your videos for a while, possibly since I took up running myself in April 2020 and have been watching mostly running videos. So many points in this video resonated with me and what I've learned myself about running. Great stuff. Thanks for the tips!
Great video thanks, I'd not considered the differences that much before especially the midsole drop. Where did you manage to find 'last season' running shoes? Oh, the format for the video was good....hopefully the next one will be the same.
On ebay mostly, also the run repeat shoe comparison website (link in video description) gives details on different iterations of shoe and their availability in some stores.
@@maximusironthumper thanks very much, I'm inspired to get back into running...I'm in Yorkshire and used to run on Ilkley Moor, it's beautiful but no matter what time of year you always end up getting wet feet, it's just whether you get wet knees and have to hope you don't loose your shoes in the 'mud.' Re the monitor, have you tried the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band?
This is the video I wish I had around 12 years ago. I was 17 and training passionately for the RAF and was a already a quite accomplished runner doing cross country and other long distance running. I had a crappy pair of trainers that I bought because they said 'running trainers' in the listing. After a while I was getting pains in my shins that I assumed was the 'no pain no gain' type deal. Anyway , long story short I never did get in the RAF as I developed awful Shin Splints, even now I can't run for significant periods as my shins feel like they are splitting apart. Never did get in the RAF as a result.
I feel for you, that sucks. Hopefully the video will catch a few people at the beginning of their running journey and stop something similar happening.
Good to see you with a new hobby I find your videos really interesting. I remember you saying in your coppicing video I think it was that you have an issue after a motorbike accident. Lots of people would use something like that as a reason to avoid exercise so fair play to you
Really interesting - I didn't buy my first grown up pair of running shoes until I hit 38. (Now 46). I struggled with joint pain until I did some reading and discovered zero drop shoes - they were brilliant for me. Turns out your ankles/knees/hips are spectacularly good shock absorbers if your gait is ok and you're landing fairly flat. I never used to carry a phone until I fractured my foot out running in the woods. Now I make sure I always have it 😂. I made it back to the car without the phone but did not look supercool getting there. I do also rate the 1000 mile socks. I had a bit of a gap from running with a bit of a cancer adventure and recovery, so I signed up to do a 20 mile race. With 30 days training - you know, to get me out of the house. It was on a 3 lap circuit in the woods in Suffolk ... and after circuit 1 in my single layer socks I realised the inside of my shoes were coming apart and giving me a blister. I was not worried about my time so stopped and changed into some of those 1000 mile jobs and by the end my feet were fine. I did also experiment with different bargain running shoes, but went to Merrell in the end as they made my good walking boots. Funny how brand loyalty can get you. If you made it to the end of that lot well done 🤭. Thanks for keeping up the good work. If you have any good tips for where to read up on heart rate stuff that would be good - I did buy a heart rate monitor, but never really worked out what to do with it 🙄
Good work on the 20 miler! I found the main use of the monitor was to keep me running at the right intensity. Once I was recording my runs I found it interesting to track my heartrate as I ran up hills (and note my recovery), plus I could track my resting heartrate - both the latter I consider good indicators of improving fitness.
@@maximusironthumper I think with the heart monitor I was always a bit concerned about how much time I'd spend hovering around heart attack territory. I will dig it back out - it is clearly sensible to know this stuff. I should probably point out I ran/walked the 20 miler. I think it took about 4.25, but I was well happy with that. You're on the money about running being different to walking. And I wish companies would make shoes for longer - I've struggled to find things I like to replace my old boots and running shoes.
Had a very similar experience with the treadmill screen when i took a gym formula... The solution... I filmed a 10k route from the handlebars of my bike, slowed it down and loaded onto a USB stick which i stuck into the screen... The young man at the front desk (I felt I should ask before) was most impressed and within a quite a few people had done the same 👍
Max .. great video many thanks , as a life long exerciser I couldn’t imagine not doing it , balance of weights , resistance and cardio training ... all helps with my passion for beer and red wine ! Keep it up
Love this, I just just ran my first marathon on Saturday just gone and loved it and I have signed up for my next one already. I love the freedom from thoughts running gives me. Happy Running!
Hi max Absolutely brilliant video mate! I've just got in to running and living in Wales everywhere is up hill.....so it's not fun at the moment but I'm sure it will get easier. As you say brooks offer a more simple range of products unlike other manufacturers and their minefields of stuff. Do you have any favourite sports outlets/ places to pick stuff up from? Many thanks👍
I'm glad it's been of use to you! I got all of my trainers from various sellers via ebay, I used this website for reviews and it also has a bit where it says the best price for a shoe, sometimes it's much cheaper to get the previous year's version! runrepeat.com/
I'm curious to find out how you got over your problems with adhesions, and have now actually done a marathon! Congratulations! As always, a thumpingly refreshing video.
How do you feel running has had an effect on your health, mentality, weight/fat and anything else? Thanks for the video, all your vids are very entertaining and informative!
Well I lost 3 1/2 stone without trying very hard so I'd say it was effective for that! That was just by eating better (not really less) and running 3 - 4 times a week. I find now just running once or twice a week does wonders for both my mental and physical health, I find running itself quite meditative.
When I was younger, running cross country at school was my favourite part of physical education, after I left school and into my naughty teenage years I found a police siren spurred me on quite promptly, of course this all ended when I got a girlfriend and had kids etc, now that I'm into my 50's, walking 1/2 mile to shops is generally a painful experience on my hips and lower back and sometimes the wallet.. very informative video and do feel you have improved your own physical well being and health..
Awesome and very informative video Maximus!! I watched it all the way through, without taking a break :) Do you have any tips on breathing when running? I heard that is very important. Thank you so much.
Thank you for sharing! Very nice info and tips! Because of the "pandamic" I started running like 14 weeks ago using an app for Android. This helps me going slow and steady. Having a regular plan and preventing injuries is very important indeed.
This is the first RU-vid video I’ve watched with full credits at the end! Excellent video though. I already run and agree with all you’ve said. I’m also a weakling who knows he should do some strength training. I am looking forward to your next video!
After doing occasional runs every few weeks I decided 6 months ago to set myself a target of doing a sub 30 minute 5K. Spent the last couple of monnths building up to 5K and doing weekly speed sessions. I can do a 5K pretty easily now though in about 35 minutes but my last speed session I did a 5:15 1K so not that far away. I've noticed the benefit in my other activities - cycling was always fairly easy for me but now it truly feels effortless.
I think that the technique Maximus used to sort out his form and running posture, is known as the Alexander Technique, which is supposed to be very good for avoiding skeletal injury.
The only time I recall having sore shins was early on with the duff trainers, I got decent footwear and improved my running form at the same time so I can't really say which helped (probably both!).
Great topic, I live up in the lake district & the best thing I ever done was to pack in the road running & start fell running - easier on the joints than the constant rhythmic pounding on the roads.
You managed to get out of your own way (with all your misconceptions) and run well in the end. I tried to run and the best information I saw on technique was a video on race winners that showcased how they move. They land flat on their feet and their legs go out behind them with all the power coming from the glutes. Their legs don't go out in front of them at all. All the movement is in the hips and they barely bob up and down. It is a thing of beauty to watch. I never managed to work out how not to get planter fascitis until years later when I bought a pair of zero drop Altra's to do the Appalachian trail (never happened) and inadvertently discovered that I had a pair of shoes I could run in without getting injured. They are flat inside with zero arch support to destroy my ligaments. Made all the difference.
Don't run in steel toecaps I did and cocked up my knee just to get a square and compus fell runners vest I didn't qualify even though I had met all demands that's an ongoing joke
Thank you for this Max, super informative, thinking now I need to invest in some proper running shoes and not just standard trainers :o Can you remember what impact your running had on your resting heart beat?
@@maximusironthumper there's always something :p that's cool 👍I wear a fitbit so keep an eye on mine and like to hear how others RHB alter with their fitness style.
