22:07 - 28:55 the best part of this video! Emma, you are THE reason why I’ve delved into Classics, why after a full day at work as an attorney, I come home and read The Iliad and why I bought Montaigne’s essays last year, and why I have The Odyssey on my shelves. PLEASE give us your lecture/random literary rambles on everything you read but especially why you read Classics! ❤️ seriously my favourite video of yours is your “Why I study literature”. YES. 👌

Did the math and 23% of my bookshelf was written by cis straight white men (better than I expected). It was fun googling "Joseph Conrad gay?" etc. and getting very unstraightforward results!

emma, you're a wizard. you somehow always manage to upload whenever I am having a very low energy day and considering going to bed super early. now, I'm going to bed at 21:00 instead of 19:30! (and yes, I needed that extra time to watch the vid because adhd)

not to harp on about TSH but my favourite section in that was when they were in class with julian. those, both intimate & intense, discussions that just set the whole class's heart of fire were my favourite - & then of course how these ideas that were put into their heads prompted their later devious actions. that's what i love about dark academia. also of course the libraries - on a more aesthetic side. for example, in h*rry p*tter i was less engaged by the plot & more so just wanted to sit in the library & wander the halls. so in conclusion, character & ambience. i hope this is somewhat helpful! & apologies for my long-winded answer

I'm currently enjoying How to Kill your Family by Bella Mackie and am simply enjoying the blunt and comedic way it is written yet still dark. The character says dark things so matter of factly that you have to check yourself when you actually like them despite them being a murderer. Would recommend as it's engaging and sarcastic 💚💚💗💗

what I would love to see in a dark academia movie, is good, more obscure literary references, classics written by non-cis-het-white-males and not just your standard jane austen or smth like that. people that love old languages but are also aware that pedophilia was quite common in ancient greece! characters who love dark academia stuff and also know what was problematic about certain times and people..
@sarcastic_fish
@sarcastic_fish Год назад
yea I totally agree with you. There’s also this like blind love and unquestioning submissive and tbh deferential take people have on classics. Like it’s so ancient you must just revere it….like….let’s question this stuff like it’s fun and everyone’s dead anyways so it all fair game. and te he yes we love an obscure reference you know I’ll sort you guys out 😎😎

I haven't read anything by a man in 3-4 years and I don't regret it. I like Jonathan Safran Foer and I don't mind having Karl Marx on my shelf lol but I honestly just don't care to use my time reading men when I can read women. I'll die and what.. I spent my life reading men? No

How you feel about Dostoyevsky is very much how I feel about Steinbeck. The humanity and visceral stuff. Plus the anti capitalism is very strong. The American way of life and why it's such a sham. I also do adore Dostoyevsky though.

I’m heading to London this summer and plan to get my hands on a first edition of Moby-Dick (just to look at… I won’t be paying $55K for it). Anything I absolutely need to see in London about books? Since you’re a Booktuber…
