the Red Rising sequel series is incredible. It's not for everyone since it's quite different from the trilogy. It's even darker, slower paced, adds multiple POVs and some other things. But it's undoubtedly better written. Pierce Brown definitely leveled up after Morning Star.
Being Mortal is one of the books that has had the biggest impact on me in my life. As a physician, I regularly think about his viewpoint when working with patients.
genuinely was so good! it's a hard book to describe i think in a way that sounds compelling just because of its subject matter but it is soooo impactful

I love that because she reads so many different genres (and is so articulate about explaining what specifically she liked and disliked about each book) that her recommendations aren't just "I loved this one so you will too!" I feel like she understands so well that even incredible books aren't meant for everyone.

I really recommend Girl, woman, other by Bernadine evaristo it’s so so good!! It doesn’t really have punctuation which is not great but after a few pages you get used to it and it’s sooo worth it!!
i’ve been listening to the hunger games series audiobooks in prep for the new movie this fall. they gutted me when they came out, and as a 22 year old i’m still sobbing at them. that’s all i really have to note unless you’ve read the throne of glass novellas

I don't know if you've read the memoir What My Bones Know but it is beautiful and gave me insight into with people with C-PTSD deal with and just had me rooting for the author and crying. Which we love a good cry.

I’m ace and was also very disappointed in loveless! I was so excited for it and the characters just fell flat for me. I dnf’d it like part way in as I just couldn’t get into it

i read this a couple of years ago actually - the twist was gas and it was set up well for sure by the narrative, buuut i found that the whole book seemed to only exist to do The Twist, if that makes sense, and so it kinda dragged sometimes for me... i think i gave it 3.5? def was a good read

I highly recommend Jason Pargin (John dies at the end) its neat bc the series doesn't need to be read in order so I recommend This Book is Full of Spiders, one of my all time favorite books. Its horror comedy. And If This Book Exists, You're in the Wrong Universe. If you want a neat YA scifi written in a way I haven't seen before I suggest the illuminae trilogy. I had a LOT of fun with that one.
i read me being me is exactly as insane as you being you. its a sort of coming of age story, but what really made me buy it was the fact that it was made entirely out of lists. & oddly enough, it didnt take away from the plot at all, i binged the last four hundred pages in one night. its a big book but i highly recommend it.
some other info on the red rising series that I have been enlightened to upon reading tom holland's rubicon: pierce made a very deliberate decision to base the society off ideas of antiquity and the roman republic which is done very effectively and goes past what i initially assumed was the whims of a history/mythology nerd. he captures the attitude of the roman citizens especially within the golds. an interesting detail is that golds choose to give birth naturally and without much medical assistance for the sake of natural selection, which is a bit of a call back to the way that children were raised in rome, which was harsh conditions without much care, cold baths and very little time to play, as they were hell-bent on creating good roman citizens. it is said that if a child died in the cot it was hardly worth grieving over another really crucial detail is the glorification of the past. again seeming mythology nerdy, you see comparisons to characters with great historical figures, like roque in book 3 with grand admiral nelson. this again is very rome-like, as in rome, they liked to define themselves by their myths and their past, always holding great reverence to the myths, legends and figures of old.
also to add on to my own comment books 4-6 are time skip but still focus on darrow, it kinda goes into the ideas that are presented in the first series about the older generation and their hypocrisy and warmongering. darrow is explored more as a character, but he feels less invincible which i think is why some people dont like it as much. the entire series also have a very fall of the republic feel where it focused on new generations who rise to the occasion in a very pompey x caesar x cicero way
idk if you’ve heard of the traitor baru cormorant triology it’s an incredible geopolitical fantasy about empire and colonialism and a woman named baru cormorant who would use any means necessary to climb the ladder of this empire to tear it all down for what they did to her home. it is very dark and political and i think you would enjoy it (it’s not fun the ending made me sob)
I read Can't Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne this month and really enjoyed it. Sapphic, fantasy, cozy vibes, running away together. It is only available digitally but you might enjoy it!
You should read How Far the Light Reaches, super good essay collection that compares the author’s experiences as queer nonbinary poc to deep sea creatures. You’d be surprised by how similar they are…
Because you liked Being Mortal, you might want to check out When Breath Becomes Air. Neurosurgeon grapples with what life is worth living after he is diagnosed with stage iv lung cancer. I sobbed like a baby at this book and had some really difficult convos with family as a result.
Currently reading Silver Nitrate by Silva Moreno-Garcia and I cannot put it down. So good 😊 also recommend Will They or Won’t They by Ava Wilder it’s enemies to lovers between 2 actors doing a type of CW show
