I've been on the wrong side of the "wasting time" argument. First time we went into the studio, we spent 8 hours there. We struggled like crazy, and we ended up not being happy with anything we made. The Engineer suggested we scrap the day, go home and hit it hard, and come back. We did that. We went home. Every practice for the next month was with a click coming through the PA that we could all hear. (We were relying on the drummer to keep us on time, he had the click going into a set of headphones. Turns out, after the rest of us started up, he couldn't hear the click anymore.) We even went so far that the drummer and I (yeah, I'm the bass player) could completely play every song by ourselves without any accompaniment and do it well. Long story short: it worked. We tracked all of our bass and drum tracks in a matter of about 6 hours total. A few more sessions and we had 7 songs ready to go. Don't be afraid to tell your customers that they suck and should come back. It helped us immensely.

I would love to see you try to mix on FL Studio. After making a wide assortment of electronic music on it for 15 years, I finally started recording metal on it this past year after getting some good recording equipment. After trying out a few different programs like Reaper and Protools I found I did could not get used to the rigid workflow of either programs. FL Studio's workflow just seems way more dynamic to me in the various ways you can any given thing and just seems overall more customizable with a wide variety of fantastic plugins. Not to mention the Edison plugin is the single most useful built-in plugin for me when it comes to take-by-take personal recording. I'd love to hear your thoughts or anyone else's using this highly underestimated DAW for metal.

The thing with every band sounding the same in metal. Back in the day, you only had the equipment which was available in your local area and had to make do with compromise, renting or borrowing amps etc. Now you can get or model which ever sound you want so everyone's going to use the best sounds and start to sound similar.

Glenn- Loved what you said about “everybody has their own voice” SPOT ON! Alot of bands totally disregard the whole harmony vocals thing, and I, for one, think it’s a huge mistake. Bands that can harmonize vocally, put themselves way farther up the food chain. It’s a lot of work to get tight, but the results are worth it! SPOT. FUCKING. ON! Thanks for doing what you do!

Glenn. Give MixCraft, the full Professional Studio version. I spent over two years trying multiple DAW systems (Studio One, Reaper, Cubase, Pro Tools, Ableton), either through downloading trial versions, temporary licenses that came with other products, or software that friends or family were using. When I'd laid out all the pro and con considerations for all the software I'd tried, MixCraft 8 Professional (now on 9) gave me the best bang for the buck. It's made by, supported by, and marketed by, a team of musicians, many of them gigging musicians. The customer support, and the people working there supporting that product, made the ultimate difference. It's easy to use, customizable, looks great, compatible with everything I've tried with it, and it sounds incredible. It also is made to work with video production (though I have yet to try that functionality). I haven't tried it on a mac, but that may be coming soon. My PC has yet another virus welcomed in by my otherwise awesome wife.

About you question of what daw to use: I’ve been using Studio one on my MacBook Pro for a few years now and I’m very happy with it. (Switched from Logic about 3 years ago because I was working together with a PC user and we wanted to be able to share project files and collaborate easier) It’s is intuitive, snappy, fast and very versatile. You can achieve any task in numerous ways, which can be confusing for some, but it also makes it super for you transfer from another daw, since it can accommodate whatever workflow you prefer. (You can also transfer the key commands from other daws so you don’t have to learn or reprogram your hot keys) I don’t do a lot of tracking however, accept for vocals. So I can’t tell you how Studio One measures up when it comes to tracking multiple channels at ones. Also, depending on the size of your session or how fast your computer is, the “auto save” function can get annoying, since whenever it auto saves, playback continues, but all functions locks up until auto save is completed. But if it bothers you, you can turn it off or just change how often you want it to occur.

Hey Glenn, one topic I'd love for you to cover is the importance of mastering and what it brings to the table in terms of defining a track. One important thing to mention with the ground loop: Its very important that the ground is the same common ground on all the outlets. If say your guitar and the mic was on separate grounds, like going to different fuse boxes. Then if there was a fault and the if resistance to the ground is different. You will become the fuse to ground. Electricity will follow ground thru your string and into the mic when you touch it. More than a few people have been killed like this.

Harmonized screams are definitely a thing, Ian Dsa from billy Talent is an absolute madlad when it comes to this. have a listen to "lies" or "worker bees". Unfortunately when it comes to composition in the western scale, everything has long been done I look at the music i have 2 work on not as a rehash, but more as that artists version of music. We live in a world where the medium is the message, the perception of reality has more consequence than truth. I enjoy that things so similar can still be so different.

I haven't heard anyone "harmonise" growling or distorted vocals before but I have heard vocal harmonies sung over another vocal part which was growled. Often, I find that when this is mixed well, some pretty awesome sonic landscapes and atmospheres are created. Examples: Intro to Duality, Electric eye cover by As I lay Dying (not such a fan of this cover but I do still really like how they layered the growl over a clean vocal line), Holy Mountains by SOAD. Real cool stuff

I use Ableton Live. More sample, synth and EDM based, but it handles live recording just fine. Live Intro/Lite does fine for a beginner who only needs a few channels for audio, but you'd have to upgrade to Standard or Suite for a "proper" Drum mic setup, and they're not cheap. If you bought a midi keyboard new in the last few years, there's probably a download code for Live Lite in the box.

I know the technology has changed with regard to dimmer switches for the newer energy-saving bulbs, but it might be something to look out for, especially if the problem is intermittent - they only seemed to cause a problem when switched on and the noise issues got worse the *more* dimming was applied to a bulb.

I assume I’m going to get hate for this, but if you like having a Mac, you might like Logic. That’s what I use and I love it. It’s made by Apple and runs great on a Mac.

I really love the workflow of Logic Pro x! I’ve been using it for a few Years now, and the selection of stock plug-ins and instruments is pretty amazing. I also really enjoy the workflow and I have never had any complaints about it

The guy asking about the subkick - I bought the cheapest, shittiest 8" subwoofer I could find on eBay, soldered a short jack cable onto it, plugged it into a D.I, and BAM! Cheap and cheerful solution! Mind the positioning and levels though, they can get pretty sensitive and peaky!! (also great on a bass cab to get some REAL low end capture ;) )

We know you hate screaming vocals Glenn, but yes. You can make a harmony for anything that makes a sound. I'm surprised you didn't know that with your audio engineering background.

Rob King I wish I had the same luck with Apple, had a desktop and two laptops all fry up on me at the same time out of nowhere, all still “under warranty” Apple basically told me since I plugged them in the warranty was void and they refuse to do anything at all for me and I’m stuck with thousands of dollars worth of paper weight.

I know its a DAW aimed more at electronic producers but Ableton is such a quick and fun DAW. Its wonderful when me and my band are recording jamming (for context Im in a Drum&Bass/Dubstep band). Its just so quick to do everything and the inbuilt effects are wonderfull and are super low impact on the CPU. Mega recomend!

Hey Glenn, Consider Ardour as a DAW. People will scoff at the idea of it being open source, but that doesn't mean it isn't supported or world class. You like Harrison Mixbus a lot, as you've said over and over again, and it's built on top of Ardour. Ardour + Harrison would be a killer combo, and the UI is exactly the same. I've been following Ardour since before ProTools was with Avid, back when Ardour was Linux only. Now it's for all the big 3 and it is an amazing product. If nothing else, give it a shot and let us know what you think of it from your perspective.

Harmonizing screams and growls can look like different screamed pitches layered on each other, or "harmonizing" screams WITH growls. I use a ton of layering with my screamed vocals to get different sounds by using those techniques. Ihsahn does a lot of similar stuff too

I honestly think that when you buy the CD of a group and it actually sounds the same live... that will spark some serious interest in music no matter who the group sounds like, their supposed to sound like the groups that influenced them. But, it will take a large amount of dedication to actually learning their instruments on the musicians part.

I have seen the most simple subkicks used live for massive systems, I'm talking like 20 2x18 subs minimum. They had a short mic stand with a shitty gooseneck on it with a 6" or 8" random speaker literally ziptied to the speaker frame with an xlr male cable soldered to the terminals pin 2 to + and pins 1&3 to - That was the heaviest bass drum I have ever heard live.

Very effective way to possibly come up with a new sound: get a bunch of people who all want to play different types of music in the same band. It’ll be volatile, there will be a lot of fighting, and the band will probably break up relatively quickly. But, maybe some musical innovation and a classic album or two will come out of that? It’s a gamble, but it might be one worth doing.

The reason that it seems that "it's all been done" anymore is that we as listeners bring preconceived notions to what we're hearing; and as musicians we tend towards playing to those notions as well. People who don't play accept what they're told is good, in the main; and anything outside that narrow band is greeted with indifference or confusion, or sometimes even mockery. The amount of self-belief it takes to fight through this environment for years or decades on end without any form of validation at all is immense; and 95% of us don't have it. Only 5% of the remaining 5% may ever become "significant" in any commercial or artistic way, owing to other factors. So the rest of us begin to accept what we're given as the relevant styles and paradigms in the industry, and we start to play to what we think the crowd wants. It's hard to write down, but them's the breaks.

I've been using Logic Pro for about a decade now. $200 is a steal for all of the stock plugins you get (not to mention you don't have to pay every time they put out an update), and it's extremely stable---it has NEVER crashed on me while recording or in live performances. The interface is easy to learn, and there are a ton of free tutorials out on the web if you get stuck on something. The downside is that Apple is changing the way that 3rd party products are able to work with the OS, and there have been some delays as those 3rd party developers catch up. All in all though, it's rock solid and extremely responsive.

Glen!!!!! So I have nothing to do with Reaper other than being a user myself, but I noticed that on 6.09 that released April 27, they specifically fix MacOS graphic glitches! "fix Retina/Metal drawing glitch when scrolling master track out of view " "add possible Metal fix for drawing glitches after waking up from sleep " "improve stretch marker/transient guide appearance on Retina displays " "allow attaching debugger to Catalina notarized version" So certainly I still encourage the 2020 DAW search that you are embarking on, but they may have just fixed the problems you were encountering. As for DAW's I would like to see you review, I would love to see a run through/review of UAD Luna. I hear good things about it but wondering if it's worth buying a UAD interface to get on board with it. oh, and FU from St. Catharines!

@alexeypolevoybass
@alexeypolevoybass 4 года назад
@RDE Lutherie, I did the same for about 7 years, but a couple of years ago I switched to Mixbus. Using it is a good way to support Ardour financially, and these saturation and EQ stages are really good. Some plugins by Harrison are also a great investment, especially the Drum Character dynamic EQ (the whole Character bundle, to be clear), and that magical tom gate they have. You won't believe amounts of time the latter saved to me. It already literally counts up to whole days.
@alexeypolevoybass
@alexeypolevoybass 4 года назад
@RDE Lutherie, as an engineer who's able to hear the difference between different algorithms of, say, compression or saturation, I kid you not that's not the only difference. Also, you can get some of these plugins for free or for really cheap if you just subscribe to their mailing list. Of course, you can just install Ardour for $1 from site or for free from KXStudio repository, and then buy $89 worth of plugins from Venomode, Audio Assault and others who sell their stuff for Linux (I think the whole Overtone DSP bundle is sold for something like $110), but the thing with those plugins is that you actually get them fully functional, it's the GUI which gets blocked every n seconds. You can do your adjustments in non-GUI mode for however long you want. And these algorithms are a thing worth attention. Note-based character EQs are a fucking gem, the Drum Character is still one of the best DSPs I ever used. Combined with lots of LV2 goodness there is in KXStudio repos, this is even more awesome.

I remember Mick Gordon started to do the whole thing "OST is full LP album with its own details not present in game" with Doom OST. Man, that would be interesting to see, since there are a lot of cool songs in games... Like Hollow Knight, for example...
@egtegs
@egtegs 4 года назад
That's not new. Video game OST-s have been of that nature even as far back as the '90s; structured like albums that don't always necessarily try to be just a collection of ingame tracks. Some tracks can be left out, some can differ from their ingame equivalent, some can have different names, etc.
