If you are going to pay that much money , just buy GFX100 II and enjoy medium format power. Gives you much better dynamic range , resolution , ibis evf and lcd design. Aand medium format video ;)
Sending good vibes your way Matt. My wife also recently had surgery, so I am working and taking care of her and my kids. I think I discovered a new level of tiredness. I hope Molly’s recovery continues to go well.
Nice review, Matt. Thank you. No doubt Leica cameras & lenses offer exceptional quality. I am glad to see that Leica is improving autofocus capabilities in each generation of the SL lineup. Best wishes to you & your family.😊
Beautiful introduction of the new SL Matt. I will stay with the SL2-S. Design is a good portion of the Leica charm for me at least and I find the SL2 and SL2-S the perfect blend of ergonomics and classic Bauhaus ästhetics. With the new SL being less wider but also thicker it looks to bulky for me and now is to much of a resemblance of the big fat Panasonic cameras which are basically from the same camera family. The better specs will not outbalance an uglier camera since we are talking Leica here. But the similar price point to the SL2 will be fair game for newcomers to choose between the beauty and the (spec)beast ....and maybe Im pretty alone with this opinion :).
Still not sure if this is right for me. Really happy with the sl2. The screen definitely benefits my shooting style, however it’s quite a premium for that alone. I’m trying to justify it but don’t think I can. The af performance on my ZF is insane which I was hoping to consolidate by selling the sl2 and ZF. But still think it’s lagging comparatively. Seems a bit slow. Love the aesthetic, screen, new buttons, and higher res, but no multi shot, limited video specs (prores) and just okay af is making me think I’ll stick with sl2 for a while.
I have the SL2s and I'm definitely not upgrading to this model. Perhaps the next one in the line. I shoot it with M lenses so the autofocus features play no role for me. Now if the SL2 drops in price significantly in due time, may pick up the silver SL2 instead.
Can the SL3 be set up so that the shutter closes when the camera turns off, protecting the sensor? My M10-R does this, but my SL2 does not, so I have had problems with dust on the sensor when changing lenses in the field.
Matt, first speedy complete recovery to Molly. I think it was about 10 years ago that I bought a Mamiya 150mm medium format lens from you that I still have. This Leica SL3 is making me want to sell some old Mamiya and Leica film gear to purchase a new digital camera. 🙂
Why didn't they give u the cam for a month? Why didn't they say go into the wilderness: Use the cam in rainstorms, out on the ocean, if arctic conditions like seventy below? Let's see if this should have the red dot on it!
This was the 2nd time I was invited and couldn't make it. The first time, I was ready to go, but my mom went into hospice care and I had to cancel. This time around, the surgery came up. One of these days! 🤞🏻
The new added dial is so essential. THis would allow me to change ISO much quickly than before. Also the APO SL lenses are amazing, cause I have the 50 APO SL. I adore that lens so so much. Definitely thinking of switching to the new SL3 now for the better AF
Love the APO 90mm SL, only down side is you have to stop down an extra stop to get the same depth of field you would expect in any other 85mm-90mm. I find in natural light for some group shots I sometimes have to just switch to the 50mm and get closer to get depth of field when needed instead of going to 5.6 or 8 just to get three faces in focus because the APO lenses are so much thinner DOF and contrast drop-off at every stop.
@@mattdayphotomine has been listed for a while in that group- but think I’m gonna take it down and keep running it for a while. I think sl2 prices will come up again now that the curtain has been pulled back on the sl3. My ZF pairs so well with the m mount glass and eye tracking with manual glass. Honestly it’s pretty hard to beat at the moment- especially for only $2000
@@D.TriderAgreed. I don't think the upgrades are significant for most to jump at this immediately. If I had to guess, many are probably waiting to see if the prices on the SL2 drop at Leica retailers and at B&H so they can either get into the SL system or pick up a back up.
Hey Matt, I have been following you for years but inconsistently based upon my photography trends. First, I am glad to hear that Molly is doing well. Next, I bought an elephant of a lens from you about 10 years ago - Mamiya 180 medium format lens if I remember correctly. I haven't been using it. If you regret selling it, I will be happy to pay return shipping (assuming I can find the lens - yikes) I am in a place now where I would be happy to return it to you and consider it was a lease if you want it back. Also, I am planning to buy a Leica SL3 and I greatly appreciate your advice because of my history of following you for 10+ years. Thanks and take care Matt.
Is it just me or is the logo on top kinda SCREAMING? Lol kinda big and clashing with the mnml overall aesthetic, no? Could have gone with just 🔴 🤷♂️ It's recognisable enough imho
I have been shooting with a SL2-S for the past 2 years and I love it. The only issue I have with this camera is really how easily it scratches. Do you know if the sl3 body is a bit better on that end ?
to clarify: sorry, the price point isn't there. The lenses aren't sharper and the quality isn't better. Get a fujifilm medium format or an xpro 3. Not getting the Leica hype for the price.
