Why we love Dorper sheep:
1) Great tasting meat
2) They have a high birth rate
3) They can breed year round
4) They’re cute
5) They are famously good mothers
6) They can be easily integrated into another flock
7) They will eat roughage
8) They are heat and insect/parasite resilient
And then the downsides of keeping Dorper sheep:
1) They’re not wool sheep
2) They are not a dairy sheep
3) They are LOUD
4) Our ram was aggressive

ABOUT THE HIGH MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD
Hi! I’m PJ, and my family loves the homesteading life! It’s something my wife and I have always wanted to do, but we grew up with ZERO HOMESTEADING EXPERIENCE!!!!!
We grew up in beautiful southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of four living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants.
In 2019 we dipped out feet into homesteading on 1 ¼ acre lot in Utah. In 18 months we were ready to do this for real. So in 2021 we packed everything up (including our sheep) and moved to North Carolina to 12 acres and we love every inch of our homestead!
We raise Dorper sheep and have big plans for:
• grass-fed lamb
• fullblood Dorper breeding stock
• meat chickens
• laying chickens and ducks
• heritage breed pork
• honey
• row crops
• perennial food forest
• and more
I hope you join us on our journey, subscribe and ring the bell if you haven’t yet.

I am a huge dorper lover and breeder of dorpers. You are doing great with them. You can increase % of babies by keeping back twins. Also keeping up the nutrition levels 30 days prior to breeding. Also if they are to heavy that can negatively the lamb %. I was so happy with 185% this year. We had 12 ewe lambs that brought the avg down. Keep up the good work. We are a grass fed grass finished operation. No grain no shots and we dont deworm. Now it has taken years to build a resistance in the flock. And heavy rotation grazing. We dont graze the same spot for at least 40 plus days. We started small and now run avg 75-100 ewes a year.

Wow that's all so incredible! You're doing some amazing things at such a large scale. Congrats! Good to hear about increasing nutrition 30 days out from breeding. I've never heard that but was planning doing something similar. Do you have any suggestions for what to feed during this time? And do you keep feeding them 30 days out until they breed?
@Missequinefreak
@Missequinefreak 3 года назад
@@homesteadingwithPJ During that 30 day period we feed more mineral choices and almost full feed alfalfa/grass. Conventional individuals call this flushing. We also grow our own alfalfa/ grass mix. With that in mind we have been spraying the hay ground with foliar feeding during the growing season. We want the brix levels up on the hay. This helps the hay to have the highest digestible hay. Also keeping the soil microbes happy doing there job. This also does not happen over night. But the health of the soil and animals is our first concern. We benefit as a side affect. Yes they continue on this high mineral till we pull the rams after 45 days. We do keep minerals if front of the always we just up it a bit more to help support the fertility and then growing lambs inside moms. We are in Iowa. @@Missequinefreak That's amazing. We have been wanting to start a small Dorper flock of around 5 sheep and the no deworming route is something that I have been very interested in. Do you have any tips on how to grow a parasite resilient flock? Here in Sweden it is pretty rare for farmers not to deworm wich is keeping me worried. With good grass, rotational grazing and not coming back to the same spot for 60 days do you reckon we will have any casuelties the first year. Would love to hear about your experience with all of this too!

@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 2 года назад
Well, you might not like my answer. But I don't really need a great relationship with my sheep. I don't need them to come when I call or anything like that. I need them to move when I want them to, and they usually want to move when I want them too. However you are right that you want them at least familiar with you as the care taker. So my best suggestion is to care for them daily. They know you bring the water, or you give the, or you open the gate to the next paddock, etc. The best trade secret is to feed your lambs some handfuls of oats to get them used to you and to trust you.

No problems with parasites so far. Haven't ever had to deworm them! They make the most noise when they are consistently being fed by human or uncomfortable (winter when there's no forage, and summer when they are hot and uncomfortable). I’m going to be showing a dorper this year! The breeder I’m buying from is doing some type of genetics breeding where she’s trying to make all of her lambs less short, and stocky she wants to make them be longer bodied, taller, skinnier, and better structured so they can compete better with the standard show lambs!
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 года назад
I've heard of this trend. Makes sense I suppose. Although we're just concerned about meat over here, but I don't know which frame is better for carcase yield. I have two ewes (sisters) that are clearly stockier than another. They both have me ewes, but my taller girl gave 2 rams, and they were both recent processed at over 50 pounds hanging weight, each under 6 months.

@cooleyedbabe 3 года назад
JennaMarie: The Dorper breeder you are getting your lambs from who wants to make them less short is the type of breeder who will ruin the U.S. Dorper. There is ONE standard: the South African Standard. The Dorper MUST have 40% leg to 60% body. Why do you want more leg? Nothing below the torso is valuable. These types of breeders will ruin the U.S. Dorper, and that's not just my opinion, that's the opinion of the South African and Australian breeders, who are the sheep experts! The South Africans took 50 years to develop this breed and constantly maintain the standard that they developed. I breed Dorpers to the South African standard. They are the "Angus" of the sheep world and also the "air ferns" of the sheep world, i.e. they thrive on practically nothing. That does not mean that they survive on over-grazed pasture. What it means is that they thrive on low-quality forage, as in S. Africa where they graze on arid desert ranges. There is plenty of forage but it is low quality and but Dorpers convert 75% of cellulose to digestible energy. There is a popular saying about Dorpers: Feed them sand and they s**t topsoil. Explain to me why someone wants to make this meat sheep "leggier"? Only because it is a popular trend in so-called U.S. "market sheep". Well, look at the Fort Worth Stock Show 2019 carcass competition. If legs are so great, how come short-legged Dorpers won 9 out of the top 10 carcasses in competition?!

30 acres?!?! You can do a lot with that! Step 1 when dealing with predetors is ask your nieghbors if they have problems. And how they address it. But a good rule of thumb is good fencing, 4" x 2" woven or welded wire fence is best to keep coyotes out, and then throw a hot wire just off the grass line at the fence and you should be good. I love my Dorpers talking to me. They can be 1,000 ft. from where I am, I shake a bucket of grain and wave. When they see or hear me, they start calling and run to me as fast as they can. My other hair sheep? About 50% would run the other way cause they didn't want to come to the barn, regardless of whether it meant feed. Don't need sheep with that mentality. Also, the hair sheep were wooosses when it came to labor. Not good mothers compared to Dorpers. Have never had a Dorper reject a lamb no matter how many she had. Had Katahdins who had trips and quads and would only nurse one or 2. My hair sheep also loved to jump over me if I blocked their escape route. Problem was that they didn't always judge the height to clear me and would hit my shoulder or side of my head! UGH! I'm on FB, Brandwein Dorper and/or Jeri Gebelin.

@@cooleyedbabe ouch! Getting clipped by a jumping sheep is no fun! Glad to have your experience here, I know your reputation on Dorpers and frankly I think it's very cool you stopped by my channel. I'm a newbie, but from my vantage point Dorpers are superior is every way that matters. I bet you have a bigger lot and farther neighbors than me, which is why the noise bothers me. A paddock without grass. You throw out hay or feed grains in a dry lot, instead of letting the animals graze. Dry lots are also pretty densely populated. Way more animals in a smaller space, than you would see in a typical pasture.

Really? You learn something new every day! I don't think it would be a problem. In fact many commercial growers don't dock hair sheep like Dorpers, but most wool sheep get docked. My sheep will sell better at shows with a docked tail so we don't. Also we do it more humane than commerical breeders.

I really like icelandic kelp for a vitamin boost, and some salt/minerals (make sure it doest have copper in it, most goat minerals have copper). I like alfalfa hay (mixed with grass is better if you can find, which is a bit hard this time if year) to give her enough to grow a developing lamb or couple of lambs. You say wool is a dying business but some people use natural colored wool that does not need to be dyed. LOL I'm in Southern Idaho and would like to know where to go to get a ewe or a lamb for not too much dough. I am surprised they are loud as most sheep are quiet. Do you know of any breed of hair sheep that is not loud? The Katahdin is a hair sheep that was developed by crossing the St. Croix with the Dorper with some Suffolk. Are they loud do you know? My neighbors have peacocks and roosters and motorcycles. I hear a lot of cows and calves that are loud at weaning time but you know the noise you know is not so noticeable as a new noise you don't know. How much would a bred ewe or a weanling go for? In Spanish for something considered expensive you might say "mucha lana" which means a lot of money although literally it means "a lot of wool."
@homesteadingwithPJ
@homesteadingwithPJ 3 года назад
Love the pun! There's KSL is southern Idaho right? Check there maybe? I buy registered stock, so I run with groups that pay more. I haven't heard about Katahdins having Dorper in them, if they do it must be little (I know there's a lot more St. Croix and Suffolk). Folks have said they are quieter. But everything is quieter than the Dorper. If I were starting over and had more land, and more sheep I would look at the Painted Desert or the American Blackbelly. Two beautiful sheep breed (although the lambs are not as cute as the Dorper), smaller than Dorper, but significantly quieter. Best of luck! I have a video coming out in the next few weeks about choosing a meats sheep and another one on choosing homesteading sheep. Stay tuned!

@@homesteadingwithPJ awesome awesome.. i totally understand. I guess when it comes to just feeding the family or purely homesteading, one doesn't need too many. 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾. I suppose I took it from a farmers perspective because I live in Central Alberta, and we only get good grass 4-5 months a year the rest months are just cold and snowy most time, so one needs 250-300% percent just to pay for the hay, grow your flock and deal with harsh climatic conditions predators diseases.
