Same here; That's one big reason why I pretend the story ends at Episode 3 (complete with 'everybody dances' ending). IMHO; Episodes 4-6 never happened. Everyone's okay, they saved the station, Rosalie will eventually recover, Campbell & Eddie will deejay with Fergus as the station engineer and "The Man" gets it's "just deserts".
I watched the show for the first time almost a week ago, Angus Macfadyen did a good job but he will always be Komodo from Warriors of Virtue in my eyes.
They gave him worse hair than Javier Bardem in No Country for Old Men and dressed him like a frumpy grandpa, but that slow smile he gives Eddie gets me every time. Feckin gaargeous
He's such a lovable frump. I don't mind his mullet either (though the clothing definitely could use work). Fergie's such a teddy bear and Cami's a ray of sunshine.
@@SpukiTheLoveKitten75 I just got into this show and have 2 more episodes to go. Love the show and Fergus was my favorite! I would tagged along with him all day.
YAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSS!!!! I love that brief bit with him dancing in the studio while, "Out of My Head" plays. Also; Fergie with a teddy bear! Fergie holding a teddy bear with that glum expression. CUTEST THING EVER. I can't help but feel bittersweet with the later clips....I wish his story ended with that last clip and Campbell's pronouncements that they can do anything! I mean; The Hospital is called St. Jude's....the Patron Saint of Impossible Causes (and making them possible). But no; The hospital name was some "1990s Cynical Irony" stuff. The "Impossible Cause" part of St. Jude is acknowledged but not the "making it possible part". I understand that the point of the whole miniseries is to show how corrupt and/or incompetent the mental health system is and how the mentally ill are often screwed over (thus our heroes HAD to mostly fail and Fergus HAD to die). In showing the fail to society, society can work to change things for the better so there won't be any more instances of real-life "suicidal Ferguses" or "Stuart-like staff" and better funding and reforms. In that sense; It is admirable and I respect Donna Franceschild's vision. This series is important muckraking done in the form of televised fiction. I'd imagine that everything that happens in the story is based on things that happened in real-life accounts from various mental hospitals. ********* That said; I look at these characters, the "St. Jude" theme, the radio station, etc. and just naturally have a completely different vision in mind. A more happy story of a gang of colorful loons "sticking it to the man". The characters themselves are sort of cliches....The put-upon frumpy "Born Loser Everyman" beholden to a dead-end job....the fun-loving manic-pixie-dream-person who steals the show, takes center-stage and opens up a world of possibilities....The quiet loner who turns out to be The Ace who can fix anything and do crazy stunts....The troubled fragile flower who becomes the Born Loser's love interest....the homemaker "Mom" figure who can organize stuff yet has issues of her own. In a more idealistic work where the good guys win 100%; Campbell would give Eddie a new lease on life and help him to "think big" and Eddie's life turns for the better. Fergus would "save the day" by the sheer power of his awesomeness and "Mr. Fixit" skills. The gang would find a way to raise money, save the station forever and outsmart Evelyn and Stuart! In fact; If you watch JUST Episodes 1-3 you get EXACTLY THAT! That's what makes this show so "BRILLIANT!"....Whenever Donna Franceschild or David Blair knew it or not....they created two shows in one! TOTA can be either a fun, funny, idealistic 3-Part story of a bunch of misfits putting "The Man" in his place or it can be a 6-Part bittersweet expose of the crappy mental health system where the "Little Guy" seldom wins (and how society needs to change this).
I love Fergus. In fact, here's my idea for the sequel to Takin' Over The Asylum. Imagine, if you will, that when Fergus was escaping, he was seeing a girlfriend/lover...Campbell meets her when visiting Fergus's grave, they connect, and he finally gets a girl. Eddie becomes a music therapist at St. Jude's, finding his life's work is working with the loonies. Francine is released and she and Eddie move in together and adopt several cats. Rosalie continues to thrive outside St. Jude's. Campbell becomes a successful DJ and advocate for the mentally ill. He, Eddie, Francine, and Rosalie establish an organization to help people with mental illnesses become independent with job skills and help getting housing and other assistance. They name it after Fergus. As a bonus, they publicize what the psychiatrist did to Fergus and she's forced to resign in disgrace.
Anna Wasserman also do you mind if I make this into a fanfic? I write because I can't handle and cope with sad endings and endings in general. I'll give you credit for the ideas. I'm just connecting them all together for you.
@@trinityadams5417 I'm with you. I HATE sad endings. That's why I pretend that TotA ended at Ep. 3. : They save the station and everybody dances to the Beatles! Perfect ending!
