This is the most useful video on bougainvillea that I've seen so far, so thank you for making it 🤩 I saw another video where the guy said that you shouldn't prune because that creates thorns. Could you please shed some light on that? Do your plants have thorns?
Yes . Exactly. I have what appears to be a thornless bougainvillea. Just bought it today. It's called Purple Queen. I think it has been over watered at the nursery.
I want to make a bougainvillea bonsai tree its such an unnatural plant but it turns into what I think is one of the most beutiful bonsai plants that exists.
Thank you, so much for sharing this video. Both men were so respectful of each other it was contagious. You can tell that neither was trying to outshine the other but wanted to teach us the beauty of another one of Gods glorious creations, the bougainvillea plant. I just purchased my first trellis Bgv plant 🤗🤗 (2 of them) and I was scared half to death not knowing what to do and hurting my plants. I have a gorgeous butterfly garden the frost killed over half plants this year. I started over with new plants, new colors which gave me the invite to see "new" opportunities. I live in Orlando Florida and glad to be a new mama to my two Bgv plants. I can't wait to update this post...you guys rock and thank you for taking the time to enjoy life and gods creation and sharing with us. I am humbled by your knowledge and expertise.🌺🌺🌺
Wow, incredibly informative! This video answered every question I've had about my bougainvillea, it was fantastic to watch. Thank you so much for making it.
Thoroughly excellent video. I always wondered about shrub vs tree vs trellis and you gave me the answer along with ALL the information I need to care for mine. Many, many thanks!
Wow! This video is very informative. Thanks! Pretty much all of the questions and problems I have been having with my bougainvilleas have been covered. I am so happy to have found your channel.
Great Video just what I was looking for and now I know let the plant suffer a little watering to much Love these plants have the same fertilizer so I was doing good on that part. And to know you can easily train it to climb how you want is nice think I'll purchase a couple to grow along a steel fence thats full sun. These are Beautiful
I was so disappointed by my Bgv as it never bloomed this year, when you said they don’t ever bloom on old wood - I got my answer for why i had no blooms. . Also, the right way to repot mine. It’s on a small trellis, and is perhaps three 1/2 feet tall. ?? Great info on bugs, and fertilizer.
great video. i have 4 or 5 bougainvillea abot 3 months old. they get lots of sun all day but i guess from too much water none of them have ant colored leaves .just green ,they continue to grow slowly but im wondering will the colored leaves (bruxes ?} return and if so how long will that take?
Great job gentlemen. Huge question here. What is the effect of these organic insecticides, if any, on butterflies and hummingbirds? Really need to know this before commuting to this FOR of action. Thanks again!
Okay in South Florida we get rain every single day for that last month! So, can't help the watering issue. ugh... So now I have a fast growing green & thorny plant. No flowers yet.
So once you put the fertilizer, how often should you water it? Now I sprayed mine with water cooking oil & a few drops of dish soap because little worms were eating up the leaves & I kept seeing a lot of little black dots on the ground. I assume it’s the insects dropping. Did I harm the Bougainville? what should I do???? I’ve only have had it for about two years. Your video was awesome! So informative. I learned a lot! Thank you!
Thanks for the highly informative video! I have a 55 year old bougainvillea plant that seems to do well no matter what. When I do go to water it, I would like to know how far out the roots extend so I know where to place the hose. I do a slow water for 2-3 hours about once a month during the dry season (I’m in the SF Bay Area), or more often during a heat wave. 1. Is this a good watering schedule? 2. Where are the root ends? Thanks so much!
I have one that isn’t blooming. It’s the first time I’ve ever had this issue with one. It sits on top of my mailbox and is usually gorgeous. This one is very healthy looking and very green. No blooms. I unhooked the water to see if I can get it to bloom. It’s in a very sunny & hot climate - midlands of South Carolina. I will try to water it once a week for a bit and see if that works.
Our well water is yellow with sulfur and other things , typical south Florida well water. I soon discovered after watering well water that all of the flowers begin to fall off and within 2 days they are gone and the plant is dying. The same results happens to my banana trees, the rest seem ok with it. So for the bougainvillea and bananas I use bottled water. Do you find the same results with well water?
I have a bougainvillea that takes over my hillside every couple of years. I cut it to the ground and it comes back. Is there info anywhere that shows the specifics of pruning giant bougainvilleas?
I bought a bougainvillea plant and was approx 7F tall in a pot with lovely red flowers. Planted it in the ground and the next day most leave and flowers were turning brown within a week all leaves and flowers were brown and dried up. I was watering as I thought it was down to heat and sun as in Spain I have now dug back up and put back in the plastic pot I bought it in but looks dead no flowers and what leaves it has are brown and dry What can I do Thanks
I didn't know the pot needs to have enough holes for drainage. My 20" barrel only has one. Can you drill a hole on the bottom of the barrel without removing the bougainvillea or should I just put gravel under the barrel 🤔
an excellent video - THANK YOU. How do you manage the bougainvillea if its planted in the ground and you're in a climate that has tendency for heavy rain at times?
If it's in the ground it doesn't matter but I've pruned the lower twigs like branches near the ground surrounding the main stem it gave me more flowers a couple of times
I live in central Pennsylvania. I acquired a potted bougainvillea this spring. It had lots of hot sun & daily watering. Is it possible to winter it in an enclosed breezeway protected from the elements? Our winter temperatures can get very cold.
If you're growing for foliage on some of them high nitrogen does wonders as its the new flush of variegated leaves thats so interesting. Also pruning in the "bush way" you end up with dense rats nest, some like that others don't. Personally I prefer a "natural" layered approach. Those plant stabilisers are fantastic, they should be sold separately for different size pots, different heights
