Thanks for the video, it was great hearing the differences between the Beardbrand product linea. I'm glad you mentioned coconut oil as I have been seeing it mentioned a lot more often recently as an alternative to custom beard oils, and it has a natural "tropical" scent. I was actually going to try it for the first time today, so I'm interested to see how much the dryness is a factor.

I've made a good amount of beard oils. Stay away from Hemp seed oil, it's difficult to get a scent in that oil afterwards with the essential oils.
@Peteru69
@Peteru69 7 лет назад
Jojoba oil is arguably the best base oil for your face. Argan oil works too, but jojoba oil is amazing. Jojoba oil as a base, cedar wood oil and cinnamon essential oils for some scent. If you have good cheapish Sandalwood oil that would also be amazing. Ylang-Ylang oil if you want some flowery scent. If peppermint oil is your thing, it can help blood flow which is great for your beard. Lavender oil might help ease your skin if you're having more irritation and the scent is calming. Lemongrass is my favorite top note. But normally I just go with jojoba oil for base; ceder wood oil, pine oil and a drop or two of cinnamon oil essential oils for smell.

I've tried a lot of beard oils and have learned a lot from the process. There are two brands which I will always vouch for - Beardbrand and The Beard Baron. Both awesome beard oils. Beardfellows - ehh, very mediocre stuff, not worth the price. It's very thick and oily, and they basically throw in one drop of essential oil in there. When I read their descriptions I thought wow, that must smell awesome, but when I got the oils I discovered that they smell like nothing. And leaving an honest review on their website got deleted immediately. The Mad Viking stuff is cheap and well.. while it doesn't feel or smell cheap, I found that it didn't do too great of a job. I believe it's the oil that started my beard-druff problem. I had another friend try the same oil and the dandruff started with him, too. Whenever we switched back to our good oils (Beardbrand, Baron) our beards were fine. But like Eric said in the video, if you're low on cash, I think straight up jojoba oil or sweet almond oil works best. Great video!
@SportyRydr
@SportyRydr 8 лет назад
+DaemoniumCC That's unfortunate about Beardfellows, as I would have expected more from them, but very good to know. Beard Baron and Beardbrand are tops for me as well, and both guys do more than just make great products. :)

Mark Neil I was disappointed as well. Stuff is not cheap, especially when I have to have it shipped all the way to Istanbul.
@DeadGlassEyes
@DeadGlassEyes 8 лет назад
***** Do you live in a very dry environment? You may not be using enough. I would just go for straight up jojoba oil until you get some high end beard oil. You just gotta experiment with it a bit, and thankfully it doesn't take long (2-3 days) to know if an oil is right for your beard or not. It's all about the skin underneath, the beard is secondary. Try to get it on your finger tips and really dig deep to get to your skin. My beard is really long so I use quite a bit, but even still I try to go for the skin as much as possible, and just use the left overs for my actual beard.

Great explanation of the different levels of your products, Eric. I do make my own beard oils (but not to exclude buying good ones!), and my research into what carrier oils are best and why revealed that there's a difference in various oils' ability to penetrate the hair shaft. Beyond that, I'm still unclear on what determines how much or little hair penetration is necessary. I try to strike a balance between high, medium, and low/no penetration. My skin is very oily, and I've found that blends containing jojoba (actually a wax) and/or argan (very similar to skin oil) tend to make me break out. So, it's down to skin health and beard feel that determine what I use in my own products, but I have no problem buying yours and BeardBaron's products containing those oils! Can't wait to try the Temple Smoke, when my budget (or a gifting occasion) allows. I just gotta know, though: What's with the glycerin? :) Take care.
@Beardbrand
@Beardbrand 8 лет назад
Glycerin is really great for the skin, which is why we've got it in our formulation. Healthy beard starts with healthy skin.

best video you have. I have recently started to use beard oils, it's been a tickbover a month now. recently I have started to learn the ingredients and really started to concentrate on what goes into them. There are many companies out there making these products. I recently inquired to a manufacture why can I purchase a 3 oz bottle of their product for the same as most sell at 1oz. They use less expensive base oils or less expensive essential oils. Although they may be all natural products.

I just cant it right... if I put too much essential oils in it makes my hands rough but if I put in too less essential oils you cant properly smell the recipe? Eric you mentioned you prefer to use Beardbrand's oil, which is great you support your product, but I was wondering if you've ever used Golddachs' classic premium beard oil (either the vanilla or the citrus scent). It's sold at The Art of Shaving retail store and it's the only oil I've ever used. Once I finish the bottle I plan on trying one of Beardbrand's oils (deciding between the lumber yard or the tree ranger scent), but if you've tried it I wanted to hear how it compares. From what I've read online on what beard oil is supposed to do, this product does it all, it's just a little pricey and I only get 20ml of oil rather than 30ml.

Have never used beard oil before and am now doing online research. Are beard oils in general (not just Beardbrand) non-greasy? I certainly see the need to condition and maintain a healthy beard, but having never used the oil before, I don't want anything greasing up my phone or clothes during the day. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks

+Tenor Chazz So Beardbrand beard oils have been designed to be lightweight and non-greasy, that being said there are some out there that are greasy/thicker. They will give you more shine and weigh down the beard; but may leave residue around. If you aren't happy with any of our products will give you 100% of your money back (including shipping).

I live in India and we dont have a lot of choices with beard oils, i was using almond oil and just bought this oil from the company Ustraa the ingredients are: Silicone Fluid, IPM, Easttosil, Cyclomethicone, Coconut Oil, Wheat Germ Oil, Jojoba Oil & Essential Oils. While the beard wash from the same brand has:Aloe Vera, Rosemary Oil, Almond Oil & Lactic Acid Aqua, Decyl Glucoside, Glycerin, Coco Glucoside, Amidopropyl Betain, Ethoxylated Lanolin, Ceteareth-60 Myristyle Glycol & Essential Oils. Are these safe to use? Would be grateful for your reply.

Coconut oil and Argan oil are are major dht blockers, grapeseed oil also blocks dht, and so does almond oil, so if you are trying to get a fuller thicker beard those oils would be working against you. YOU should use CASTOR Oil, or JOJOBA Oil

I'm still not entirely able to grasp what exactly DHT is, but from what I've gathered it seems like DHT blockers would be a good thing?

Keep it simple, no essential oils or fragrance and try 50/50 pure cold pressed organic Jojoba/Argan oils as a start and vary mix to find your preferred viscosity.

hey Eric do you think extra virgin olive oil is a good oil to experiment with in making some beard oil? And as far as essential oils could you get the same effects without the use of them?
@Beardbrand
@Beardbrand 8 лет назад
+Tony Canttell We don't use olive oil in our formulations and for me I think it's a bit too heavy. It really comes down to what your goals are and how you want it to turn out. You can definitely formulate without essential oils. Our Blank Slate is free from essential oils.

Hey there, Yousef speaking from Kuwait. I've been wanting to grow a beard for quite a while now. Only issue is picking the right product that won't irritate my skin or anything like that. It gets extremely hot here so I'm pretty sure I should avoid the citrusy oils. What would you recommend? Oh and by the way I have a patchy beard which I find annoying... any help on filling in the gap would be perfect, and thank you in advance 😊

Hey Yousef, thanks for writing! We might be a little biased but our beard products are some of the best around - visit beardbrand.com to check us out! If you don't like citrus-based scents, we offer a variety of other fragrances that you might enjoy including Tea Tree, Urban Garden, and my personal favorite Tree Ranger. Our oils are lightweight and non-greasy, so while they keep your beard healthy, soft, and conditioned, they also won't leave it feeling messy or heavy. Have a look around our site and let me know if you have any questions! -Zach

Hey guys, I really like your videos and love your story. I've also been reading very positive reviews about your products. I'm about 6 weeks into my beard and I've been using coconut oil and grape seed oil for beard oil. That's been fine but I think I'm ready to step it up a little. I live in Japan. Do you guys ship to Japan and, if so, is that going to cost as much as the beard oil? What would you recommend?

Hey Kevin, We do ship to Japan. However, I imagine the shipping will be pretty pricy. -Parker

Thanks, Parker. I found Beardbrand products on Amazon.jp. I know Eric has said that ebay is NOT an online retailer of Beardbrand products. Is that true of Amazon as well? I read the list of Beardbrand's online retailers on your website and Amazon was not among them. The problem is that Japanese men for whatever reason do not grow beards (I don't know if they can't or if it is just not desirable) so there are no beard oils or beard balms in the men's section of stores. So, just six weeks into a full beard I'm already getting some double takes. That's not the reason I'm growing my beard but it is interesting to see Japanese people's reaction to facial hair. Thanks in advance for your help from a fellow Texan living in Japan.
